HS Coach of the Week: Joe Piccininni, Newfield

Posted Oct 29, 2010

The New York Jets announced today that Joe Piccininni of Newfield High School in Selden, N.Y., has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Piccininni will receive $1,000 to benefit the school’s football program and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.

The award, in its 15th year, is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to the community, the school and the student-athletes.

Piccininni is in his sixth season as head coach of the Wolverines. A 1978 alumnus of Bellport High School, he was a Newsday and Daily News first-team selection as a defensive lineman in 1977. He matriculated to Carson-Newman College and transferred to Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where he graduated with a degree in health and physical education. Piccininni is currently in his 11th year as a physical education teacher at Newfield.

On Saturday the Wolverines defeated the Smithtown East Bulls, 31–0. They are currently 7-0 and in first place of the Suffolk League Division II. Newfield will go on the road to face the Bellport Clippers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
