04/07 — The Jets hosted eight college prospects today and the visitors included a pair of talented receivers: Missouri's Jeremy Maclin and North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks.
There is a chance Maclin could be the first receiver taken in this month's draft. While Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree has been slowed by a foot injury, Maclin continues to gain momentum. He's a do-it-all type of player who totaled 2,833 all-purpose yards last year, catching 102 passes along the way. Jets WRs coach Henry Ellard actually led Maclin through some drills at his pro day last month.
Nicks is an interesting player. At 6'1" and 212 pounds, he's a little bigger than Jerricho Cotchery but they share many of the same characteristics — great hands, courage to go over the middle and the ability to pile up yards after the catch. (You'll be able to read more about the wide receivers in our draft positional preview on Thursday).
Mississippi's Peria Jerry headlined the list of defensive visitors. Jerry (6'2", 299) has a tremendous first step and can get in the opposition backfield in a hurry. Last season he collected 18 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and seven sacks.
Rutgers DE Jamal Westerman, St. Paul CB Greg Toler, Wisconsin LB Jonathan Casillas, Clemson DT Darrell Scott and North Carolina TE Richard Quinn also spent some time at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center today.

Just don't see how drafting another young QB would get this team to the next level. Guys think that Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco happen all the time. I believe that going D-line at 17 is the only way to go. Both Pats and Steelers would, the two most successful teams in last 10 years. 3-4 DL need size and durability."

Tue, April 7, 2009 - 11:07pm ET"Even though it's only been one season but I would put Golstein up for trade. After all for him being the sixth overall pick in the draft and the little bit that they didn't even get out of him plus the fact that he is rarely even mentioned in this year plans. I f he had been a lower pick IM sure that the team wouldn't even think twice about getting rid of him. "
Paul Milliken Said:
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 11:14pm ET"The team needs to stay away from drafting anymore Ohio State players after all besides hitting it pretty good with Mangold all their other OSU players have been a bust. But most of the players that they get from every Florida school always seems to be a hit even if they trade them. And after one good season Thomas Jones doesn't deserve any type of pay raise. "

Like Ray said on 'Jets Nation', we should all be hearing the beep-beep-beep sound of the truck backing up to drop off his bonus/pay/resigning. If not, he'll get it in anyone of the other 31 teams out there. I hope you've got some good news for us...any update on TJ would be good too."
Eric Allen Said:
"Vincent, No update on Leon. He's working under his current deal and has been here with his teammates during the voluntary workouts."

He's just like Vick in that he'll require baby-sitting 24/7, especially in NY. One step out of line & he'll be either in the big house or suspended by the NFL Commish. Not worth the time, money, hassles or effort. Good player, but not worth the risk of being left holding the bag."

Eric Allen Said:
"Chris, I agree with you — I don't think Maclin drops to No. 17. "

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 2:49am ET"Update on Austin: Anybody know what this guy runs the 40 in? His acceleration on his NFL highlight reel is really impressive! Makes Coles and Cotchery, hate to say it, look downright slow. And if this is the start of the Jets actually giving a shot to guys who were amazing in college but have been rotting on the bench in the pros, i.e. Ainge in a few years if they don't watch it, I like it!"

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:54am ET"Jets looking at Cowboys WR Miles Austin. He's a restricted free agent that if we sign & Cowboys don't match, would cost us a second round pick. He's Cowboys fastest receiver and he is 6'3" 215lbs,in the league 3 years.I love the move if it happens, but I think Cowboys would match, although they need draft picks they have no 1st rounder."

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:03am ET"Nicks is a possession receiver and we already have 2 in cotch and keller. Maclin shouldnt be there at 17 (if he is snag him) and last thing we want to do is trade up w/ few draftpicks. Let tampa think we want freeman, let them trade up w/ us, get a few more picks and snag hey-bey! harvin if hey-beys gone, but hey-bey his a size(6-3), speed(4.3 40time) and durablity advantage over harvin."
bigpete Said:
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:05am ET"Back to the Miles Austin info. hes a restricted free agent and the jets would give up a 2nd round pic if dallas doesnt match. i think its a longshot because this guy is part of the reason they released TO."
bigpete Said:
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:05pm ET"these are all good prospects to bring in. i love both DTS Jerry and Scott. Scott is a projected 3-4 rounder thats a steal for this guy in our system. LB Casillas and TE Quinn both fit our needs perfectly and are late round guys. Casillas can cover 3rd down scat-backs and Quinn is considered a great blocking TE (had a great combides video too). We finally are makin moves that makes sense!!! GO JETS"

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:10pm ET"Crabtree looks great despite the injury. If possible, he would be a great draft choice. Dallas is not going to trade Austin. I would be surprised if that deal came off. Amani Toomer is still hanging out there ready to get picked. He's got 10 years left in him. He's proven great, and catches everything .He could also teach the young guys some tricks."

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:15pm ET"i have been hoping the Jets would look at Austin. He is a great receiver about to enter his 3rd season. He could be a great pickup and definite deep threat. I'm a big fan of hey-bey and I like him over hicks and maclin. We need a WR threat to help our young QB situation!!!!"
Anonymous Said:
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:34pm ET"Forget Miles Austin. He has potential but the Jets need a guy that make an instant impact. Nicks is going to be there for the Jets. If they want a guy who plays bigger than he appears and someone who's agressive to the point that he will push for every inch of the field, then Nicks is the guy. Also Heyward form Maryland will most likely be available, but Nicks should perfectly fit the puzzle"

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:36pm ET"They are not going to draft Freeman thats just trickery. We can dish Clemens to Mangini for Derek Anderson and we're all set. Or if they cut Brady Quinn we can pick him up. Dont forget we got Eric Ainge back there, I would not rule him out of the QB competition. He just needs to be developed a little. I would keep Ratty ,and Ainge and dish Clemens. They need a big reciever ,and a big running back"

WE HAVE MONEY TO BUY.......LET'S SEARCH FOR A QB, the fanatics want playoffs......now we have a team... only one piece"

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 4:14pm ET"I say they take Pettigrew w/ #17 or trade down for additional picks. J. Gilbert is his name and he's flying up draft boards besides jumping out of pools. Big, fast, strong and athletic DE will fit in nicely w/ this aggressive scheme. I would also go after WR Barden mostly for the red zone and somewhere along the way we need that big, physical smash back for short yardage and to wear the opp. down"
Brian Sommer Said:
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 4:53pm ET"I agree jetfan74. Jarron Gilbert is a beast. Would love to get him in rd.2. I think he could be the steal of the draft. I also like Pettigrew. The best blocking tight in the draft he can also make the downfield catch.I wouldn't be dissapointed if the jets surprised everyone and took a RB like Wells,Moreno or traded down and picked up Donald Brown. I know we need a WR.I am all for best player avail."

J-Rod Said:
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 5:58pm ET"How about getting a Moreno, a Ringer or Mccoy? TJ is a good RB, but he's a Curtis Martin Hybrid. CM was a great back, but it's time to get a strong, fast and qucker feet back like Moreno or a tall, fast, quickfeet back like Mccoy--something new and different for a change. We do have a O line that could protect about anyone. That's the best system to fit a rookie back. Do something different!"
Row Said:
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 6:48pm ET"To Jet vet, you need to take a look at TJ's carries the last 5 games, and how he was used. Favre sent a few pick 6's on screen passes to leon, and we had a lot of singleback sets. TJ had 14 TD's. NO ONE ON THIS TEAM COMES CLOSE. Cut the personal bashing, and realize we don't need a "replacement" for TJ. McCoy will be drafted too high J-rod. WE MUST PICK A 1ST RND WR OR TRADE UP FOR TWO! GO JETS"
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 9:02pm ET" Row About T-J What happened last season 20 million & all he could muster was 1 TD give me a break .. I KNOW YOU WILL GIVE ME THE SAME SORRY EXCUSES .. The line was bad Brett Favre stinks ==he had 1 good season in a row & wants to blackmail us sorry I don't think he's worth the pain he's going to cause over his selfishness "

But I was hoping the Jets know something we don't -- they're not that high on this year's WRs in the draft? They're willing to give up a lot to get Austin? He wants to play in New Jersey again?"

We also RELEASED our only FB that year if you didn't remember. (Darian Barnes) Mangini made him apologize for leveling a DT I believe. As long as we can establish some type of run offense I think with our new defense we are stronger than 2008 and a solid offensive weapon like Nicks can only help Clemens..."

Mon, April 13, 2009 - 10:10pm ET"Plan A - move up to get 2010 future #1 pick according to Kiper if he had stayed; Mark Sanchez. Then trade Clemens for a 4th round pick. Make Rat #2 QB. Plan B - Draft Jackson DE from LSU. Plan C - Trade down, add a pic and take one of the top recievers listed 3-6 who seem pretty equal in talent . If plan B or C, also sign Byron Leftwich and trade QB Ainge for a future pick."

They were looking for a replacement and or pusher for Pennington, Now with pennington gone to mia, and the awfully overratted brett farve is now gone. Wed, April 22, 2009 - 9:00pm ET"Ok, the jets need a tall fast receiver like Darrius Heyward-Bey out of Maryland. Since Santana Moss we have not had a deep threat and Heyward-Bey ran the fastest 40 time. We also do not know what Clemens can do with a better O-line so I say we give him year instead of getting Sanchez."
