03/23 — NFL.com just unleashed a fourpack of mock drafts in the last day, and the league website's draft gurus have several options for the Jets, assuming that the Green & White stay put at No. 17.
I always turn to Pat Kirwan first. One of the most insightful voices on NFL.com and Sirius NFL Radio has shifted his choice of wideouts for the Jets, from Hakeem Nicks to Jeremy Maclin.
"The Jets may fall in love with Freeman by April, or believe Mark Sanchez will fall to them," Kirwan writes, "but after Laveranues Coles left via free agency the receiver group may need help. Maclin is a very exciting player who led the nation with more than 200 yards of offense a game at Missouri."
Draft analyst Charles Davis thinks the Jets will fall in love with Freeman, the Kansas State QB, as do many of the team's fans expressing their opinions on newyorkjets.com.
"Many thought this would be Mark Sanchez," Davis says in a terse observation, "but the K-Stater is gaining momentum by the day."
Steve Wyche also is on board with Freeman.
"Several teams want Freeman and could have to trade ahead of this pick or with the Jets to get him. Freeman's stock is soaring," Wyche confirms. "The Jets need a quarterback, but they could trade for a veteran, deal this pick and move back in the draft for additional second- and/or mid-round selections.
And finally, the loquacious Jamie Dukes provides a defensive alternative in Wake Forest CB Alphonso Smith for the Jets, who have spent most of this off-season pursuing and signing D-talent for the D-minded Rex Ryan.
Ryan's "organized chaos" scheme, Dukes observes, "puts tremendous pressure on the cornerbacks, who will be called upon to play man-to-man. Smith reminds me of Samari Rolle, whom Ryan coached in Baltimore.

If we don't trade out,it's gonna be TE Petigrew or RB Wells."

But in order to get Cutler are you willing to part with your 1st & 3rd Rounders this year and as high as a Possible 2nd Round pick in next year's draft.. If the jets stay put and go after Freeman; do the Jets go after Tory Holt? Where things stand; its a roll of the dice"

Mon, March 23, 2009 - 4:41pm ET"It would be awful nice of Mangini to help out the Jets with a Cutler trade. But I'm sure he would want the first round pick. I think this draft is even more exciting than the one when they had 4 first round picks. The draft could swing so many ways when they're waiting down at 17. I read you like Kirwin's choices but he has Curry dropping to 8? KC will not pass up on him to lead their defense."

Detroit has the first pick in Rd2. There will still be plenty of receivers available with that pick. It really depends on what the Jets plan to do at QB, I really hope we stay put at QB and see where we are at. Cutler sounds good, but will cost too much"

Anyone who says that they would have to give up a third and first rounder is wrong because Cassel went for only a second rounder and denver was talking trades Cassel for Cutler. Why waste a pick on a QB who in reality is just as big a question mark as K. Clemens or B. Ratlif.....what's the point of having these QB's if we will never see what we got in them....why not build around them like we seemingly have built up our defense....let the D carry them, see what you have at QB"

russ Said:
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 11:05am ET"We have three qb's all labeled losers by managment before ever given an opportunity to succeed. This is indicative of an organization that now values form over substance. Cutler has proven one thing in the NFL..he's not much of a man and not the kind that I would share a foxhole with. The Suits should allow Clemons and Radcliffe the opportunity to succed instead of playing fantasy football"

Tue, March 24, 2009 - 11:17am ET"Drafting a QB is always a gamble. There are no Matt Ryan's in this draft, and definitely no one "ready to play right away" will be available in the middle of the first round. I say we trade a 1st round and maybe a 3rd for Cutler. Cutler is a sure thing. He might be known as a jerk, but he has the skills that can get us deeper in the playoffs. "
Charlie Said:
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 11:38am ET"Please, everyone, remain calm! Cutler is on his way and we'll be looking at hopefully shoring up our currently decimated offense with both a free agent and a quality draft pick! I have confidence that neither Mr. Tannenbaum nor Mr. Johnson would let the fans down by doing anything to the contrary. After all, that brand new stadium and their positive cash flow are predicated on that."
Xavion Said:
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 12:02pm ET"I am not the Biggest fan of Clemens But Jay Cutler is no better than KC I'd rather have KC Than Jay since J is a Jerk and crybaby. He has a losing record as a starter and TD-int ratio is almost 50% So what he has a good record when team gives up less than 24. Ill bet he gave the opp a lot of points with turnovers besides Kellen is a perfect 3 for 3 when the Jets gave up less than 20 pnts "
Xavion Said:
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 12:06pm ET"Cutler had a monster line around him and good recievers.. Javon walker, Brandon Marshall, Royal... His receivers did good jobs with Travis henry was having a good time in Denver... He is worth too much and shown too little Kellen has a strong arm too and ratliff both are mobile and need the chance to show so Keep cutler where he is. We dont need the QB version of T.O. "
Howie Said:
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 12:19pm ET"Clemens does deserve a shot. The last time he started not only was he inexperienced but he had a terrible O-Line, no pass protection, no WR (Coles was hurt) and as a result, no run game. T Jones struggled to get a 1000 yards. With a good line, good run game he will do a lot better. What the Jets need now is a real #1 WR. If they trade for Cutler on draft day, I can't blame them. But don't draft QB"

Tue, March 24, 2009 - 12:56pm ET"How are we not talking about Brian Cushing? He is by far the SMARTEST defensive player in the draft and he would be a perfect fit fopr Ryan and the Jets. Look at the likes of Matt Cassel and Tom Brady, were they first round picks....NO! You can always find a diamond in the rough in the later rounds but a player like Cushing is the perfect first rounder if he falls into our laos. "

Tue, March 24, 2009 - 1:40pm ET"Now that we've spent all this time and energy on bolstering up our defense doesn't anybody think its time to do something about the two offense positons we need most. Quarterback and wide reciever seem to be our most important issues at hand . Unless these DB's or LB's can throw the ball down the field i think we're back to the same old jets"
Thing Said:
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 1:51pm ET"Niner the reason he didnt lead that comeback was because Coles and McCarenins dropped sure TD's late in that game. The Jets won't get Cutler since the Broncos want a proven QB in return. And the Jets should draft Heyward-Bey or Harvin and not a QB. It would be a wast of a pick with 3 on the roster to get an unproven rookie QB cuz Flacco or Ryan duplicate is unlikely in any draft"
Jay Said:
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 2:18pm ET"We need a receiver more than we need a QB. I don't know much about Ratliff but I think Clemens has potential. With a totally revamped offensive line, I say give Clemens a shot, I think he can put up some solid numbers. Keep the 17 pick and get Hicks. Off all the receivers I like him because he has great hands and is more physical than the others."

Tue, March 24, 2009 - 3:22pm ET"Okay so the Jet's would draft Freeman, who's been shakey in accuracy as best. When they also report they love Ratliffe and have whispered he could be a diamond in the rough. So what, you'll bring in an unproven QB who doesn't know Shotts very complex offense? *Shakes head* I don't see it happening. What I'd do is Bring in Boldin. Why draft an unproven reciever when Boldin is on the market? "
cliff Said:
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 3:26pm ET"If you get Boldin, it opens up the first pick and all others. It gives you flexability in what you can do. You can get the best available DE, a desperate need. Or another lock down CB. For that matter you could get the best available RB and trade away T.J. I'd rather replace T.J and start building a young backfield so you're young and strong for many years to come, not just 1 or 2. "

Get that CB to learn under Lito, get some experience. If you want to get Jay Cutler in a trade, that works fine, but not for the 1st rounder. No man is bigger than the team. Package him and BT w/ the #17 to Mangini(his guys) and move up to #5. We get a true #1 WR in the draft and draft a RB 2nd rd.
