File Under: Baltimore Ravens, Rex Ryan, defensive coordinator, Tennessee Titans
01/10 — Baltimore's 13-10 victory at Tennessee in the AFC Divisional Round did more than send the Ravens on to the AFC Championship Game. It will send Jets executives to Baltimore on Sunday to talk with Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.
The Jets had received permission from the Ravens to interview Ryan for their coaching vacancy. The only question was when that initial interview would take place. Had Baltimore lost at Tennessee, the sitdown would have occurred in the business week ahead.
But with the Ravens moving on to play either at Pittsburgh or home against San Diego a week from Sunday for the right to advance to Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Fla., the window of opportunity allowed by the NFL and the Ravens is limited to Sunday.
So much as a Jets contingent led by owner Woody Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum traveled to Phoenix to meet with Russ Grimm, the Cardinals' assistant head coach/OL coach, Thursday in advance of the Cardinals' NFC Divisional Round Game at Carolina tonight, Johnson and Tannenbaum will travel to Crab City on Sunday to meet with Ryan.
Ryan's defense, ranked in the top three in the NFL in yardage and point categories in the regular season, held the Dolphins to nine points and 276 yards and forced five takeaways last week at Miami.
Earlier today, the Ravens bent but didn't break in the first half against Tennessee, yielding 256 yards but only one touchdown. Then in the second half, Ryan's unit put the squeeze on the Titans, holding them to 135 yards and a field goal. For the game, Baltimore forced three more takeaways.

When you have players like he has you can play an attacking D like he does. And when he blitzes his players get there. So how he interviews will determine if he will be the next HC. Why didn't he get the Ravens job last year?"

Plus he runs the 3-4 D which the JETS are already set up for - It would be insane to have a HC & DC that runs a 4-3... We traded away alot of dominant players that thrived in the 4-3... Even though id love them to go back to it - But then again, who the heck am i??? REX for HC '09'"

The Jets 3-4 defensive personnel are perfectly suited to excecute the aggressive attack scheme that makes Baltimore one of the top defenses in the NFL. No more waiting half a season to get aggressive then going back to our passive ways........This guy is the one, reel him in Tanny."

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 9:36am ET"A few observations from yesterday. Drew you bashed me about Whisenhunt and look at the great job he is doing while your boy Mangini is sitting home. Ira I told you we should have draft Rogers-Cromartie you and a few others gave me grief when I suggested picking him at 6. He is playing extremely well and a rising star. Mikey Mc continuing on the Favre bashing give it up already its time to move on."

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 9:42am ET"Don't be fooled by what is happening in Baltimore. The Ravens defense has been great for years before Ryan showed up. I am not saying he is not responsible for some of what is happening but don't expect the same results here. Our defense is extremely slow and old and thanks to Tangini is a disaster. Ryan is not my first choice but would be OK with him we absolutely need to hire a defensive guy."

And he’s one of the best. He makes you want to come to work and makes you want to work hard.” Sounds like the kind of head coach the Jets need!"

He showed a lot of promise this year early on and did make some nice plays late in the season. Don't rule out Schotty adding Marty as the DC if he gets the job. The Ravens/Titans game remined me of the Broncos/Jets 1998 game. GO JETS!!!!"

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 7:54pm ET"The intriguing thing about getting Ryan would be that Suggs, Lewis and Scott are all free agents this year. With only one franchise tag this could present an interesting scenerio. I would take any of the three over what we currently have on our roster. This certainly makes for an interesting benefit with hiring Ryan. Watching the Giants today I felt like it was the Jets...questionable play calling"

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 8:10pm ET"Yeah I agrre with Frank. Their D was awesome when he was just a ball boy. The question is how much of what we're seeing is Rex and not just the talent he's had. We better have a face to face with Shanahan boys. He's the best one out there if Ryans not for real."

Vincent Said:
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 9:25pm ET"If it is Ryan that will be the next Jets HC, then Woody better get his check book out because a scary D like the Ravens have will need some new key position players that are likely to cost big bucks. Fred Said:
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 11:27pm ET"The Jets should seriously consider Ryan for the head coach position for the following reasons: This year the Ravens had the 3rd best defense in the NFL. Look at what that defense did to Miami and the Titans. I like the fact that at halftime he made adjustments against the Titans which definitely helped them win. He will make the Jets defense better. And we all know what a good defense can do."

This is a no brainer..>Rex should be our coach if Woody wants to win then he will do the right thing here...."
Frank Said:
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 9:13am ET"Andrew please do your homework. Our LB core is slower than a Clydesdale running in a Thoroughbred race horse led by Barton, Thomas and Pace. Do you watch the Ravens defense? Their success is in their speed which we are severly lacking. Jenkins and Ellis are on the decline and Lowery & Elam are you kidding me? They are extremely slow for the positions they played and killed us this year."

If Randy archives the comments you will see I definitely wanted to trade up for either Long or Ryan or trade down or draft Rogers Cromartie I am sure Ira remembers that. Hearing talk about making him head coach brings tears to my eyes. We need a Head Coach that will lead the team and cater to its strengths. Also, running would have preserved Farve's arm. There are great chioces out there, lets get one!!!!"

Rex Ryan will be just another coordinator with great players to find out he's not the good of a coach. Stop wasting time...get Shanahan. MIKE SHANAHAN should be the only option."

So the next best bet is Rex Ryan and i'd be "shocked" if we actually made the right decision and hired him! Management doesn't do much that makes sense from coaches to draft picks. Ghoulston?, Robertson?"
