01/08 — Two big-name Jets, one the former Green & White head coach and the other the possibly former starting quarterback, made some comments during the day today that will be of interest to Jets fans.
Eric Mangini was introduced this morning as the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, 10 days after it was announced he would not return as coach of the Jets.
Without breaking any new ground, Mangini acknowledged mistakes were made with the Jets. But he said he enjoyed his first head-coaching job in his three-year tenure as the Jets boss.
"I really appreciate the opportunity I was given by Terry [Bradway], Mr. [Woody] Johnson, and Mike [Tannenbaum]," he said. "I’ve been on the other side of that table. I’ve told people that we feel like it’s time to go in a different direction. ... I’ve done that, I’ve made those calls. I respect the fact that they made the decision they made. The one thing I can tell you is that I appreciate the opportunity — it has been invaluable to me. I’m really excited to be a Cleveland Brown.”
He said he'd like to have Jets QBs coach Brian Daboll and Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan as his coordinators, "but nothing — I've only been the head coach for 12 hours — is set in stone."
Mangini also expressed good feelings about acquiring and coaching Brett Favre this season.
"Any of those decisions I was intricately involved in," he said. "I really enjoyed my time with Brett. He's obviously a Hall of Fame quarterback. He came into a really challenging situation, and I respected how important it was for him to be one of the guys and fit in with the team. I really like the time I spent with him."
Meanwhile, Favre from his Mississippi home has told ESPN's Ed Werder in a story that's out today that he's still several weeks away from deciding whether to play his 19th NFL season. But he said he doesn't feel the urge to complete any "unfinished business" from the final five games of the Jets' season, when they went 1-4 to fall from hot AFC team to out in the cold and out of the playoffs.
"I don't feel I have anything else to prove," Favre told Werder. "Do I have to redeem myself for the last five games? No. I could be trying to do that until I'm 60 years old. There is nothing left out there for me from that standpoint. I'm disappointed with the last five games, sure, but I know I did everything I could have.
"I didn't play as well down the stretch. It was probably a little bit of everything. It's hard for me, but I have to say I gave out down the stretch."
Favre didn't say definitively that his Jets days are done, but his statements made it sound as if he's moving in that direction.
"I think it would just be better for me to just thank the Jets, and I sincerely mean that," he said. "It was well worth what I invested. But I'm going to just quietly step away, if that's what happens."
Whatever's going to happen won't be announced for a month. Favre said GM Mike Tannenbaum told him he'd call him in a month. "Maybe," No. 4 said, "I will tell him my answer that day."

Very few people are good enough to quarterback in the NFL, if you still can, you should. If they get open, he'll connect."

Clemens keeps saying he's 'ready', but given his performance in '07 when he was also 'ready', I'd trade him ASAP. Ratliffe doesn't have the experience yet but looks promising. Maybe try for Cassel? The Pats will say NO, but if the price is right then everything and everyone can be bought."

We saw what a sorry mistake he was playing for Pennington. This was at a time where I felt even Pennington needed to go in NY, and I'm sure most of us felt that way at the time whether we would admit it or not. I like Chad in Miami now, he fits in well w/ their offense."

With Thomas Jones and Leon Washington the new coach needs to know how to use those two and get a powerful and versitle Fullback to help out. But I do not think that Ainge is going to be any good just from what I saw when he was in TN. Maybe Ratliff, y'all would know better me on that."

Overall Brett played better than more than 1/2 the QBs & being pressured way more that other QBs were in the league. And he came into a new system AFTER the season had started. I say 1 more year Brett!"

Sure it was against 4th stringers, but that is not his fault, all he can do is play when given the opprotunity. He is a big guy with a strong arm, put him in the right system and you have yourself an NFL QB. Cont..."

Fri, January 9, 2009 - 7:26pm ET"...You think anyone would know who Tom Brady if he wound up on the Lions, or the 49ers, or on the Jets for that matter. I doubt it seriously. He was an average QB with a strong arm but never had his opprotunity until the Jets, of course, gave him that chance. I wouldn't hand him the starting job, he would have to earn it, but given who we have on the roster now, who else would you want?"
Christopher Said:
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 7:35pm ET"Westhoff or Ryan should be the Coach...Give Ratliff his chance...draft a true pass rushing DE #1. Then get a WR and CB (either draft or FA). Get Boldin, SIGN LEON, trade Coles, try to trade Gholston why he still has some value and to get rid of that ridiculous contract, Fire Sutton, and get a veteran backup QB. Oh yeah we still need a kicker and punter. Then maybe we can have some hope."
Ira Said:

Stay retired please, you've done enough damage."

Fri, January 9, 2009 - 9:30pm ET"All I know is that the Jets would be doing Jeff Jagodzinski wrong if they didnt give him any kind of a job after getting him fired like they did, I guess he is offensive which the Jets need an offensive coach as there coach but Jeff Jagodzinski should be there new Offensive Coordinator and someone with experiance as head coach. Drew Said:
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 12:01am ET"Frank...I know you love Spags as he is doing well for your other team but lets not make it like Spags has little talent. Last year (when he really made his money) he had Osi, Strahan, Tuck (All dominant DL) and A Pierce. I know Ryan has Lewis and Reed but the Giants have alot of talent on thier roster as well. I would rather have Ryan than Spags but either would be okay at this point"
Vincent Said:
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 1:48am ET"I agree with 'Ray'. There's too much praise for Ratliffe without knowing what he can do. He looks good, but gambling 2009 on him is not needed given Woody has enough $$$ to buy someone a bit more proven and tested. Lienhart may be available, and is young enough and has enough talent to be made a longterm, successful Jets QB. Whether Favre comes back or not doesn't stop this discussion...(cont)"
Vincent Said:
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 1:53am ET"(cont)..because at best Favre has one year left. So the search has to start now so the new QB can take a year to learn the playbook and systems. Ratliffe should start to get some play, but not the starter's role after 1 year as a back-up. We shouldn't copy the Ravens with a fresh QB, coz we don't have the defence they have. We need a young QB with some experience and a long future in the NFL."
Kevin Said:
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 2:55am ET"Unrelated comment. After seeing that Jeremy Macklin has declared for the NFL draft, I think he is someone the Jets should consider. In fact, if he is there at 17 they have to take him. Granted he may not be as good as Crabtree overall, but his big play potential is about equal. We all know we need a #1, Coles and Cotch are solid but neither is a #1."
Tom Spicer Said:

Sat, January 10, 2009 - 10:43am ET"MikeMc. So youll know where this is coming from I am not a Favreiac. I think he should hang it up before fans admiration and respect turn to contempt and pity. My comment is on you saying if he wasnt 100% he shouldnt have played. I agree totally. But the majority of that decision falls on the HC, not the player. Just another indecision from a guy who could do no wrong by you all year."

I do agree though that for himself, his family, and the NFL he should step down gracefully. No one should fault him for wanting to find out if he had anything left to give. He did very well all things considered. Now we know he can not last a full season."
Kenny M Said:
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 12:26pm ET"Really, Brett? No unfinished business? You swoop in like some cheese-head super hero, give us all false hope, then give us an abysmal 1-4 run that has us miss the playoffs? To Chad Pennington of all people? Maybe you should have realized your arm was tired BEFORE the season. Favre just tarnished any respect he had left in my mind. "

But if the Jets return him for next year. They need a QB of the future to groom in Farves shadow just like GB did with Aaron Rodgers, consider the draft. "

Sat, January 10, 2009 - 8:19pm ET"To MikeMc: Mike it does make a big difference coming in late and learning the receivers tendencies. Yes Brett was playing hurt at the end and that affected his throwing. But I also saw jets players not picking up blitzes and chasing the guy into Bretts face. I saw receivers not catching balls within 3 feet of their chest. Plus the coaching got worse at the end instead of better. Team spirit lacked"
Bruce Said:
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 8:28pm ET"Further more, because of Brett and who he is, defensive guys on the opposing team are studying Brett like no other because they all want an interception from the future HOF. I've seen them numerous times ask for autographs. He has to play with what is given him and he has always wanted a star receiver that played with the same energy level that he does DD was the closest to that and he's not here"

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 1:49am ET"2 Reasons Jets Choked: 1. Didn't stop the run - Seattle had 5 subs on the O-Line. Remember? Awful! 2. Didn't run enough. Brett is not a 40/50-pass guy anymore. Anyone who throws that many times, will eventually get picked. If Jets mixed the run with play-action fake, throwing 20-25 times, results would have been there. Receivers might have actually had some separation, too. Poor coaching!"

After making numerous mistakes his first couple seasons he began to show improvement. Before he left the Packers he was having trouble with his playing ability during cold weather. That hasn't changed. I don't feel the choice should be his to play or not play. On his own, I doubt he would ever retire!"

Favre could still be a great asset as a starting quarterback to any team in the league. If the Jets let him get away they may be like the Packers, 6-10. Get Favre back."

When he says he "has nothing to proove" He is probably just answering a reporters question. If he comes back, it will not be to "proove something", it will be to play the game he loves and he wants to play. That is good enough for me."

Mon, January 12, 2009 - 2:42pm ET"it's time we brought in an experienced head coach; look at the rest of our coaching staff and you see only Callahan with notable experience outside the Jets. Billick is a great option, Super Bowl credentials AND Defense oriented, and should be hotly pursued. Favre should come back with an experienced coach that wil fit play calling to his strengths. We need speed on both sides tho, or a 4-3 def"

Mon, January 12, 2009 - 3:32pm ET"That is the problem, If Brett was the kind of player that would sit, or be sat, if he was not playing well, or just to let other QB's play, I would want him back. But ,weather its him or coaches, if he came back he would play weather he was the best choise or not. Just to not break his streak, however impressive it is, he played when he should have sat. I do lay blame on coaches as much as Favre"

Tue, January 13, 2009 - 4:28am ET"#1-It's not Brett's fault, we need him here to open up the offense and coach Brett Ratliff. Int's come when you try to make something happen, and with Shottenheimer and Mangini's conservative run it up the middle predictable offense teams are going to jam the middle and blitz the corners. Brett took alot of unnecessary hits, and he gave it everything he had with only a short preseason to prepare."

Tue, January 13, 2009 - 10:07am ET"Sit Favre? Really? Okay, put a rookie QB in and take a chance. Most rookie QB's are not going to be as successful as Flacco or Cassel. Why not put all the rookies in? Of course, I am being sarcastic. Check out the stats of both Mannings, and other top QB's and see what their final Pass Rates were. QB's will benefit by having Favre around, ex: Rodgers, Brunell, Hasselback. The Jets need #4."

Tue, January 13, 2009 - 11:27am ET"I would like to see Brett return if fully healthy, they should be able to win two more games with him next year. I believe his receivers with the Jets haven't laid it on the line as they did for him in Green Bay...that has to change. They also need a power running back other than Jones who doesn't hit the line at full speed...too much finess. They also need more pressure on the opposing QB."

Wed, January 14, 2009 - 1:04pm ET"To me and a lot of other footbal fans Brett Favre is the current face of the NFL. He is the most down to earth guy you could ever meet. Sitting on the floor at his own crowded restraunt when patrons offered him a seat. Giving autographs to kids when others would pass them by. Always encouraging players when they messed up. He is a great role model and I hope he stays until he can't play any more!"
Bruce Said:
Wed, January 14, 2009 - 1:13pm ET"And in a league where there are players that send the wrong message to kids, Brett is there showing them how to work hard and try hard. He shows them that losing is also a part of life and that you should move on and try again and never give up. While other players glorify themselves, punch other players, do illegal drugs, gambling illegally or even shoot themselves....Brett gives our kids hope!"

Thu, January 15, 2009 - 6:07pm ET"I have seen a few post about Shottenheimer. My thoughts here are simple. He is NOT head coach material. He also is not NFL offensive play calling level! One more year with this guy and I don't care who's in there. We don't have a chance. You seen it with Favre and Chad. Look what Miami done with Chad, now that was offensive play calling. "

Thu, January 15, 2009 - 8:41pm ET" Just want Mr Favre to know how much i've enjoyed watching him play football. You and Mr Ripkin are a rare few that truly enjoy the game. If you feel you can still play and want to i hope you'll come back if only for another season. Maybe you can be of some help to the Jets and i know the fans would like you back. Whatever you decide i wish you and your family good health & happiness. "
Bruce Said:
Thu, January 15, 2009 - 10:58pm ET"This whole thread about either keeping Favre or not and either benching him because of injury or not is getting ridiculous. Only one team in the NFL goes all the way. The Jets were not coached well enough and the players did not play well enough to have continue on. Just appreciate how far they did go and quit blaming 1 player out of 53 players. Brett did more to win games than to lose games!"
Trevor Bills Said:

Fri, January 16, 2009 - 3:18pm ET"Watching the Packers since Favre left is not the same. Favre brings that "it" factor every game. Now I am a Jet fan because of him. I enjoyed discovering the Jet team. Favre is what every team needs... a humble, committed, hard working leader who plays the game for all the right reasons. I never recall him pointing fingers in GB. I would love to see the Jets win a super bowl with him at QB. "
CD Said:
Fri, January 16, 2009 - 3:40pm ET"Honestly, who ever heard of Thomas Jones until this year? Now all of a sudden he's the man and showing up on the NFL channel as a guest commentator. I was saddened by the comments made by Falk and Woodson this week on NFL. They blamed all the Jets problems including Magini's firing on Brett. The Jets came after Favre not the other way around. Favre made no promises. Get Real guys!"
MIKE SALEMI Said:
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 8:39am ET"I was and will always be a Pennington fan. Sure u can look back and say things now, it's easier but at that very moment when Brett was an option. U had to pull the trigger to get him. He was worth it. When we were 8-3, our D was tough, he's throwing TD's and we were blowing people out. Brett was the right pick and people hailed him. The failures at SF, Oakland, Seattle and Miami were huge.13-3!!!"
Brenda Shaver Said:
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 9:12am ET"I think Brett Favre is the best to have ever played the game. Since GB decided to move forward, I think the GM and Coach should have suited up for the QB position, maybe then they could have had a chance at least a Wild Card Spot. That being said, maybe Thomas Jones is ready to try for the QB spot for the Jets. He seems to have enjoyed a rise to popularity this year."
BK Said:
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 12:44pm ET"Let be for real Farve is or was "Great" but we need to focus on getting a QB for the future and that wasn't Pennington or Clemens. You had to at least try Farve and I was the first to be pumped about signing him but he gave out down the stretch and looked aweful! As far as Thomas Jones comments he's no Adrian Peterson, Brian Westbrook, or even Brandon Jacobs so maybe he should keep his mouth shut"
The Rick Said:
Mon, January 19, 2009 - 3:37pm ET"At this point we have to pull for Ratcliff. Clemens is not a good NFL Qb. It looks like Ratcliff has that certain moxy about him you need in a QB, so let's hope he can be our answer. "
