File Under: Chad Pennington, Brian Schottenheimer, Brian Billick, Brett Favre, Bill Callahan, Darren Sproles, Steve Spagnuolo, Ron Rivera, Jeff Jagodzinski
01/05 — Chad Pennington's going, Brett Favre's thinking, Bill Cowher's staying, the Jets are interviewing, and the Falcons, Chargers, Ravens and Eagles are advancing.
Pennington's return to the playoffs was a short trip. After throwing only seven interceptions during a remarkable regular season with the Dolphins, the former Jets passer threw four picks against the Ravens in a 27-9 loss Sunday.
"It has been a special year. That's why it hurts so much," said Penny, just a week after Miami clinched its AFC East title at the Meadowlands with a win over the Green & White. "You want to keep it going and see how far you can take it."
With the score tied, 3-3, late in the second quarter, Pennington went up top to Ted Ginn but instead found the ridiculous Ed Reed. Not only did Fast Eddie pick up the first of his two thefts on the afternoon, but he ran back his takeaway for a 64-yard score.
Sports Ilustrated's Peter King spoke with Favre only a few days after the Jets finished up their season. According to King, Favre appears to be learning towards retirement.
"I'll take some time, but it may be time to look in a different direction,'' Favre reportedly told GM Mike Tannenbaum.
King also said Favre declined to undergo an arthroscopic surgery to repair his damaged right biceps, which was recommended by team doctors if he intends to play again. It doesn't appear any final decision from Favre is on the front burner.
Last week the Jets reached out to Cowher, the former Steelers head coach, about their head coaching vacancy. But he quickly removed his name from consideration and the CBS studio analyst clarified his status Sunday afternoon.
"It's a privilege and an honor to be a head coach in the National Football League, and I have been flattered about the attention," he said. "But the timing right now is not right. I don't plan on coaching next year."
To this point, the Jets have conducted three interviews for their vacancy. Offensive coordinator Brian Schotteneheimer and assistant head coach/offensive line Bill Callahan received interviews Friday while Giants defensive coordinator Steven Spagnuolo visited the Jets' Florham Park offices on Saturday.
The Green & White have also received permission to speak with Rex Ryan, the Baltimore Ravens' defensive coordinator/assistant head coach.
But there have been conflicting reports about whether Boston College football coach Jeff Jagodzinski has been contacted by the team. The Boston Globe indicated that Jagodzinski had been contacted, but the Eagles boss refuted that report.
"Well, there's nothing to it," he said. "I haven't talked to them and no one has contacted me."
Then late Sunday evening, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that BC has threatened to fire Jagodzinski, who was Favre's offensive coordinator in Green Bay in 2006, if he interviewed for the Jets' job.
According to NFL Network reporter Adam Schefter, the Jets will also speak with former Ravens head coach Brian Billick this coming week . "Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is the favorite for the job, but Billick can't be dismissed," Schefter wrote on his blog.
As far as the other weekend playoff results, the Cards held off the Falcons, 30-24, and the Chargers topped the Colts, 23-17, in a late Saturday OT thriller. Then the weekend ended with the Eagles' 26-14 triumph at Minnesota.
We'll talk about the divisional matchups later in the week, but these two No. 6 seeds are live dogs. The Ravens are going to be a handful for the Titans in Nashville and the Eagles will be a tough out for the Giants.
Can 'Bolts RB Darren Sproles give the Steelers fits? He was sensational against Indy and defensive coordinator Ron Rivera called a great game. But it's a lot easier playing in SoCal than in the 'Burgh and the Steelers have one of the best homefield advantages in football.
Congratulations to the Cardinals, but their playoff stay will be short. The Panthers are waiting in their den for a team that just doesn't play well on the road.

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 7:54am ET"So the JETS may interview Boston College HC Jeff Jagodzinski? BC says if he does interview w/JETS they'll fire him? The mans thinking of his future & they do that? Dosent sound like BC has a good core of values - I dont know much about Jeff so i have NO personal negatives, but he's NOT the man 4 the job- JETS need a HC w/NFL experience. But GOOD LUCK JEFF w/BC, thats a poor unreasonable situation."
Rick Roucoulet Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 8:12am ET"Maaaan! the more I read, it seems like the favorite for the JETS HC job is Brian Schotteneimer. I surepray thats NOT the outcome. I thought the whole point was to move away from what we just had? W/B. Schotty @ the healm their not changing much. The JETS really need a stern roughneck coach. He needs to shake that locker room up a bit. Billick or Spags may be the man to do it."

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 8:18am ET"withdrraw interveim w/ the boston coach, unless your serious or he will be fired, ruin everyones life will ya, throw the brinks truck at Donovin, theres you hall of fame Qb who can still trow the ball and wants out at philly, maybe land Reed too. speaking of Reed, thats how a good saftey plays Kerry. Eric take notes and that position you can dooo it. Where are the Chad groupies today, "

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 8:25am ET"i see chad had a chad playoff game that is as far as chad will ever go hes a playoff qb not a championship qb"

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 8:42am ET"I still feel schotty will be the new HC but if Billick gets the job i would expect him to bring in Mike Nolan to be the DC. He is a 3-4 DC and was the DC for Groh in 2000 and Billick for a few years in Baltimore."

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:02am ET"Doesn't anyone get it? The "comeback kid" and NFL MVP are riding off into the sunset for the season. That's what happens when the whole team doesn't play up to snuff. My gosh..look at Kurt Warner two weeks ago. But let it happen to Favre and he is run out of town on a rail by his teammates, "fans" and many sportswriters. Makes me sick!!!"
Frank Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:07am ET"Hey Ira thats pretty funny. After the last few weeks McNabb is going nowhere and I definitly want nothing to do with him. Might as well say lets get P. Manning too since there will be an overhaul in Indy as well. I love Pennington he is a great guy but yesterday showed why we got rid of him he is a paper tiger during the regular season put him in front of a playoff defense and he can't cut it. "
Frank Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:15am ET"I am hearing there were a lot of conflicts between Mangini and his staff if that is the case I am certain that was a major factor in his departure. Tanwoody in considering B Shott must be thinking a one year run with him with the idea of going after Cowher next year otherwise this makes no sense. We need a defensive guru with a track record not an inexperienced O guy. If B Shott then Rivera as DC"
Tom Spicer Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:25am ET"Ira, I could not agree more Mcnabb is only 31 he already has 10 years in the game at least 7 of those 10 years they have made at least the 2nd round of the playoffs 2 of the 3 years they did not make it he had a season ending injury they made the NFC title game 4 times & the super bowl 1 time he has done all this & he had a # 1 WR only once the year he had TO & they went to the super bowl he has"
Tom Spicer Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:31am ET"gone far with no threat at the WR spot he has at least another good 5 years & he wants out of Philly the Jets have 9 draft picks this year we could give a pick to the Eagles & we still would have 8 draft picks we wouldnt even feel it Mcnabb has had Westbrook & that is it the Jets have way more weapons than the Eagles on O "
Tom Spicer Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:37am ET"Also Ratliff I know he did well last year in the preseason but that was vs 3rd & 4th stringers & Kellen could not beat out Chad last year in the preseason so I do not think he is the answer unless we are going to draft someone & start from scratch Mcnabb could be the way to go"
MikeMc Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:50am ET"Brian Shottenheimer will have you begging for Eric Mangini. That will light up Randy's Radar message boards. Well Boomer just said "the jets QB was terrible" there it is debate over cause Boomer is the All Being Master of Time Space & Dimension."
sal Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:53am ET"yes ira your right, that was definitly a farve like perfromance, when farve does it thats what we will hear all off season.now lets see if he does another full season. may be he can start another streak, dont think he'll do 18 seasons though"
Robert Said Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 10:01am ET"I can't believe the Jets would name Brian Shottenheimer head coach. His play calling was especially against Denver (the ill advised trick play in the pouring rain) spotty at best. We need a "big time" defensive specialist who will bring innovative schemes and instant credibility."
Alan Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 10:01am ET"I swear..if the New York Jets hire Brian Schotteneheimer as the new head coach I will...NEVER..EVER.... watch another Jet game.......................EVER!!..."
Drew Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 10:04am ET"Chad's showing vs the Ravens is why the Favre trade was worth the risk. Chad cannot beat the aggressive physical teams like that. Lets show the man some respect though. He was in the playoffs with a less talented team and were looking for a new QB and coach..... Ira?? Who really like Mcnabb? I know we have ties to Philly with our Asst GM but Mcnabb? I guess he's better than we have now though."
Drew Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 10:10am ET"I believe the B-Schott story has to be leaked by the Jets to the media to cover their tails. We have been taking a beating in the papers with the impression that coaches dont want this job. Saying B-Schott is the favorite shows the Jets have an in-house favorite in case this blows up in their face. I do find it strange that so many "leaks" find their way to the Star-Ledger though??"
Frank Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 10:49am ET"The only other theory I can come up with for B Shott is that Mangini over ruled him on things that are only privy to the staff and Tanwoody that clearly backfired thus giving B Shott credibility. I base this on the rumblings that none of the staff liked working with Mangini. I don't mind keeping B Shott for one more year with the idea of getting Cowher next year but we need a top defensive guy."

Ira Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 11:25am ET"You have to give Schotty some slack. He is a smart coach who got caught up in a triangle mess with himself,Favre and Eric. I want a former HC but if they can't get one then i have no problem with Schotty. If he gets the job his most important hire will be a DC. Lets see what happens."
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 11:32am ET"We will not hire B Shotty HC .. The right move is go through the motions wait the 2 weeks for shanahan & make him an offer he can't refuse.. He's the right fit to make our running game 1 of the best in the league, Billick next choice he'll get the Defence in shape to compete .. Both no nonsense guys & BTW NO NO NO Please NO College guys or Crennel .. Third Spags Ryan or Le Beau "
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 11:50am ET"Cont. Please lets stop with D Mcnab & all the 10 years guys lets develop the 2 good 1s we have in the fold Phatty & Ainge they know the system already.. Why would we want another situation like Farve learning the Offence need to Gel all that crap again.. Thats why this team is doomed to fail every year Start Phatty or Ainge see who wins out in camp & preseason & get Shanahan HC & if not Bellick"
wayne Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 11:50am ET"I'm beginning to wonder if this owner is the reason both Parcells then Belichick bailed out. He's a no show for a meeting with a SB winning HC?The HC is propably more important than the QB in pro football.I really can't see any reason if I were Spagnuolo or Ryan why I would want this job. They're on good teams where they could just sit and wait. That Schottenheimer is a candidate is beyond reason."
wayne Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 12:03pm ET"Chad reached as far as his talent can take him on sunday. At some point the competition always rises way above is talent and "game mgt level".The Chad lovers' are blind if they couldn't see that.If the choice was to continue with him vs going after Favre, it's a no brainer, 100 out of 100 times you go after Favre. He didn't even beat out Vinnie for the job and Moss padded his college career."
Ken Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 12:14pm ET"I would rather have MARTY Schotteneheimer as head coach instead of Brian Schotteneheimer. The JETS may want Brian Schotteneheimer because Brian Schotteneheimer worked with **(RATLIFF)**!"
uncle joe Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 12:24pm ET"Hey,maybe Shotty was so bad because he had to change his whole plan for Farve after making all these plays for a QB who couldn't throw deep.It was Mangini's job to say lets pass against the worst run team in football & Mangini's job to say lets just send 3 rushers to give the QB all day to chew us apart.Mangini was SCARED and that's why he's GONE!"

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 12:40pm ET"Hey Randy, I just noticed Uncle Joe asking ONE of the most important questions surrounding this team that I have stated already numerous times - Ive stated that I hope WESTOFF stays & UNCLE JOE is looking 4 an answer . This is my official question: ANY WORD ON WESTOFF REMAINING??? Besides the HC, This is 2nd MOST IMPORTANT 2 THE TEAM. I know its up 2 the next HC but any word if he wants 2 stay? "
Randy Lange Said:
"Rick, I have no official answer to your official question, but I know the stature that Mike Westhoff has with the Jets and the fans, so as soon as I hear anything, I'll pass it on."
Ray Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 12:44pm ET"Favre declined arthroscopic surgery so we need to decline another year. If he isn't willing to show he'll do what it takes to be 100% from the get go, it isn't worth another season. Looks like a full on qb competition next year. Hmmm Schott.......can't run an offense, so let's let him run the WHOLE team! This isn't sounding good."
Rick Roucoulet Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 1:04pm ET"I can honestly say id take ROMEO CRENNEL back - But ONLY as a DC - NO NEVER NONE as a HC - Im gonna gamble & call it here 1st - The HC job is going 2 either Spags or Rex Ryan. they will get rid of every assistant & hire their own (So damn UNFORTUNATE that WESTOFF goes) Favre retires (HIPHIP HORAY) & JETS sign McNABB - NOT MY DREAM BY ANY MEANS (Just sounds reasonable) & NOT THE WORST CASE SCENARIO"
Howie D Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 1:28pm ET"The 2009 schedule has been released, and once again we're going out to the lovely city of Oakland. Jets might as well rent apartments in Oakland. Are the Raiders now part of the AFC east? Is Al Davis slipping something under the table? Is there a glitch in NFL'S scheduling system? I'm curious to know the home and away history of the Jets vs. Raiders?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Howie D, next year's game will be the 22nd all-time in the rivalry played on the West Coast, while the Raiders have come east 19 times. More recently, next year's game will be the ninth at Oakland since 1999, while the Jets have hosted the Raiders twice in that span. Two of those road games were playoffs. The other seven were/are luck of the scheduling draw."
MikeMc Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 2:04pm ET"Mike the Ex an offer Shanahan can't refuse? He's owed 20million, you would have to give him a 5yr 10mil per, ridiculous for that over rated dirty coach, he belongs in Dallas. Frank I agree Shotty may be 1 & done barring a playoof run with eyes on Cowher in 2010.As a boss myself I would rather be feared than liked, so the fact that the staff didn't like Mangini tells me he was Strong & Stubborn."
"OFF THE RECORD" Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 2:09pm ET"word is that Brian Bellick will not Coach the New York Jets this season and wants off the list. source said reason to be that Brian wanted Miller lite and Woody and Tanny just could'nt satisfy him with COORS so with Shanny taken the couch next to Cowher what next for the New York Jets, wood/tanny could not be reached for comment. source feels that Favre will be considered if he wants the job."
MikeMc Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 2:10pm ET"If Favre decides to come back , having B Shott might not be a bad idea for a year trial. If Favre(or the new HC) decide its over I think a young Defensive coach (like Ryan) should start over with a young ,big, strong armed & bright QB should be given the team to learn on the job. I'm with Frank on this one, I want nothing to do with Mcnabb. Clemmens, Ratty or a draft pick should lead this team."
uncle joe Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 2:15pm ET"Why is Tannenbaum taking so much heat lately?I think he is great! He got all the players that we and Mangini wanted, and his only flaw was Gholston. He got Farve because his Boss wanted Farve and he somehow gets the player he wants in FA or trades. His trades have been awesome with us giving up minimal or recieveing alot."
uncle joe's WHY COME Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 3:15pm ET"ThankYou Rick, and Randy Why Come you didn't answer when I asked, are you mad at me,why come Randy ,WHY COME?"
Randy Lange Said:
"No, uncle joe, I'm not mad. I just have no answer to your question."
JoJoJett Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 3:19pm ET"Come on Farve, Suck it up! Do the surgery, get your tail back in shape and come do a full season. Mini camps and everything. We will get some speed on D and we will go deep next year maybe even a Super Bowl. Go out a winner!! Then retire and play on your tractors!! You got us to 9-7. Get us to the next level. You can do it!!! "
John F. DeBiase Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 3:57pm ET"I agree that Tannenbaum did a splendid job with the trades he made, however, the Jets now need a head coach who can lead them DEEP into the [layoffs, and a young QB with the talent to lead the team on the field. It's been 40 years since the "biggest day in Jets history"... Many of us have grown gray and bald waiting for history to repeat! It's been too, too long!"

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 4:45pm ET"just heard that tj was badmouthing favre.. but favre did not play as well as he could of down the stretch.and maybe should of sat out a game or 2....and yet many of favres ints. came from desperation because on previous drives .tj couldnt pick up a 3rd and 1 . tj got stopped many times on crucial short yardage runs .whereas leon or tony r. surely woulda converted most of those downs."
Brett Favre Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 5:10pm ET"Thanks for you confidence JoJojet, but I have never been cut on & I won't start now. Quite Frankly this is the shape I want to be in, I'm Brett Favre & no way will I work out with the team, mini camps are a waste of my talent, I'll just go out there on Sunday & have some fun, whatever happens, happens. If we don't win, it was not meant to be. I want to run my plays though, int's or more int's ."
Pack Fan Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 5:50pm ET"The Pack knew what they were doing when they sent Brett to go off to the Big Apple. He fades down the stretch, he's 39 years old and hates cold weather. Look at any really cold weather games in the past few years and Brett does not want to be there. I loved watching him play for all those years in GB but even Ted Thompson knoew it was time to go in a diiferent direction."
jimlo2229 Said:
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 6:05pm ET"I agree with ya jak,,Jones should not be bad mouthing Favre at all. In fact jones did not get the job done either. He even dropped a few passes that favre threw right too him. favre also now holds a jet record for most completed passes in a season"

Tue, January 6, 2009 - 2:30am ET"please someone answer me why does almost everyone including the so called NFL experts blame Brett Favre for everything? Not making the Playoffs and the Interceptions he so called threw?I mean why not get on the Defensive Line for Crappy Defensive?I mean it's not Brett Favre Fault that The NYJ Defensive is Horrible! And not all of Brett Favre Interceptions was his fault!"

JET4LIFE Said:
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 11:20am ET"was it all favre no it was not but like i said his play affects the lines if we are 3 and out D gets no rest or opportunity to study film sheets on the side to adjust to errors made earlier and the offense gets out of rhythm ex:Jones not getting enough carries so i believe it start with him if he is not 100% well then the team is not 100% he could have sat out 2-3 possessions per game to rest up "
Favreisgod Said:
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 12:16pm ET"Everyone saying this is all favre's fault is unbelievable. Favre is one of if not the greatest QB to ever play this game and i would love to see him return for another year. i watched him in Green Bay since i was 11 in 1994 i have always loved to watch him play and was hoping to get to go to the Jets Texans game next year to see him in action.
