12/19 — The major snowstorm has begun. I got here to my ringside seat at the Atlantic Health Training Center early this morning before the flakes had begun to fall. But shortly after 9 a.m. EST they arrived. They fell slowly at first, then faster and less vertically, more horizontally.
Now it's about 11 a.m. and the turf field outside my window is mostly white, with the yardlines still visible but the streaks of light green of five minutes ago now gone. But they'll be covered soon. We're still expecting 6-8 inches today into tonight.
The snow has me thinking about takeaways. The Jets' defense has done a good job of taking the ball away from the opponents this slow turnover season NFL-wide. Their 27 TAs are tied for fifth-most in the league.
True, the takes have come in bunches — seven vs. Arizona, five vs. St. Louis and seven combined in the two wins over Buffalo — but there's an aptitude there for this defense, and Darrelle Revis (5 INTs, 1 FR), Calvin Pace (4 FRs), Kerry Rhodes (2 INTs, 2 FRs) and Abram Elam (1 INT, 3 FFs) need to keep it up for the final two weeks of the regular season.
Problem is, the opponents may not be willing. In fact, by one measure, Seattle QB Seneca Wallace and now Miamian Chad Pennington are running the two stingiest offenses in the league when it comes to turning the ball over to the foes. Heading into Week 16, here are the five best QBs by turnover drive percentage this season (plus Brett Favre for the Jets);
| QB, Team | Drives | TOs | Pct. |
| 1. Chad Pennington, Miami | 149 | 9 | 6.0 |
| 2. Seneca Wallace, Seattle | 65 | 4 | 6.2 |
| 3. Eli Manning, N.Y. Giants | 152 | 13 | 8.6 |
| 4. Kerry Collins, Tennessee | 160 | 15 | 9.4 |
| 5. Matt Ryan, Atlanta | 150 | 15 | 10.0 |
| 28. Brett Favre, JETS | 152 | 23 | 15.1 |
So one of the many key matchups for both Sunday's game vs. the Seahawks and the following week's regular-season finale vs. the Dolphins will be which prevails: the Jets' takeaway tendencies or the enemy QBs' tightfistedness.
One thought for Sunday: Snow doesn't help ball protection. And now the forecast for Qwest Field is an 80 percent chance of snow on the West Coast.
One more thought for today: The yardlines are now visibe. That's because the plow is out and half the field has been cleared.
Head coach Eric Mangini will be speaking in 10 minutes and we hear the players will be practicing outside for the first time this week shortly after the coach concludes his remarks.
Update, 11:35 a.m.: Mangini opened his news conference by announcing with a smile: "We will be outside today."
Responding to a question about the Seattle weather report, he replied: "Yeah, it's supposed to snow out there, so I thought we'd enjoy it. I think Brett wants to make some snowballs."
Send Jetman to Tampa
Good luck to Rob Fulmer, a.k.a. JETMAN, the rabid rooter for the Green & White from the Granite State of New Hampshire who is one of the nine finalists in "The NFL: That's how I see it." contest. Check out the contest here and vote for Fulmer, even though in his thumbnail photo he looks like Napoleon in New Orleans. The winner will go to Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa and into the Super Bowl commercial hall of fame. The contest began Thursday and runs through Jan. 4.

Fri, December 19, 2008 - 12:45pm ET"I can't believe there's a 90% chance of snow in the forecast for sunday in Seattle. I think it works to our advantage since we're better at running the ball than most of our opponents. I think Miami's gonna have a problem this weekend. It's supposed to be 9 degrees with winds gusting to 33 in KC."

Randy Lange Said:
"JetFanInMaine, I don't know the answer to that, although I tend to doubt it because that would be a huge expense to simulate conditions that a warm-weather team might play in once a year, if that."

Fri, December 19, 2008 - 4:17pm ET"Well here it is Jets fans and Mangini Kool Aide drinkers. With an embarrassing west coast record and the season on the line it is imperative the team win on Sunday. If the team lays an egg vs one of the worst teams in the NFL & their 3rd string QB we should not even wait for the end of the season Mangini & Co. should be fired. So I expect nothing less than a blow out win vs. this west coast patsie"

Fri, December 19, 2008 - 4:27pm ET"Cont. Anyone in the know I'm sure would rather have Vilma back there then VG . The Db's we have now with 8 in coverage give up more yardage then any1 in the league ..Again I'm sure we wouldn't be any lower if miller was back there roaming the field .. They are horrible plain & simple tell me something that makes sense I will listen"
scjoe Said:
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 5:11pm ET"Mike Jet Vet... A little more pressure on the QB would make those DBs look a lot better back there. I believe the OLBs would be a whole lot more fearful rushing the QB, then dropping into coverage. Also, has anyone else thought of the real possibility of hosting NE in the first round of the playoffs? Think about it, two Jet wins, two NE wins, and a Balt loss and we have it."

Even taking the points from the defense out of the equation, we have alot more than Miami. To win, we need the plus factor....everything we have now plus the deep ball to Clowney. "

Fri, December 19, 2008 - 9:07pm ET"You guys are saying Chad has done so much better than Favre well guess what I dont see it. Ed said Favre had 39 more throws than Chad but he forgot to add that Favre had 32 more completions. Chad 66.3% Favre 67.6% I thought completion % was Chads strength guess not. You guys keep saying Chad has 200 more yards he does not he has 166 & SO WHAT over the course of a season that is nothing divide 166"
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 9:25pm ET"166 by 14 the # of games played THAT IS 11 YARDS PER GAME BIG DEAL YOU ARE SPLITTING HAIRS WITH THAT. Favre has 11 more int's but he has 7 more TD'S Chad already knew the Miami O when he got there Favre had to learn from scratch if Favre comes back next year his numbers compared to Chads wont even be close Favre would blow him away. "
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 9:35pm ET"Other teams have figured out the wildcat the Phins have been just getting by in defensive struggles in the last 5 games they have scored 14, 16, 16, 28 & 17 vs SF, STL, BUF, NE & OAK 3 of those 4 teams are garbage go to yahoo click on sports click on nfl click on schedule click on Phins the 1st sentence in the team report says Miami has not played in a bad weather all year I go to all Jet games "
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 9:41pm ET"Favre has to throw in the strongest wind in the league. Also all of the INT'S are not Favres fault I could name 3 that hit Coles in both hands that he dropped for INTS vs Chargers ball hits both of his hands he drops it Cromatie grabs it returns it for a pick 6, vs Bills ball hits both of Coles hands he drops it Polslowski picks it IS THAT FAVRES FAULT ? Coles gets paid millions catch the ball "
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 9:45pm ET"& at least 3 plays he threw deep & nobody was there the WR ran the wrong pattern at least 7 of his INTS were not his fault also in the Bills game the deep INT Faneca bumped into him as he was throwing & the guy Faneca was blocking hand hit Favre in the head watch the play again. Favre would never say anything like that but it is true. Finally he does force throws into tight spots but that is cause"
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 9:49pm ET"he can make the throws that alot of guys cant all the guys that are bad mouthing him now were lovin him when we beat the Pats & the Titans well when we beat Miami get ready to get called out. & next year Miami takes a big step back write that down SPICE OUT"
Carlito7 Said:
Sat, December 20, 2008 - 1:15am ET"joegatorva, I could not agree with you more. Last year around this time you couldn’t buy support for TJ on this blog, what a difference a new offensive line makes. I only wish Chad had a real chance to play behind them in a regular season game. As for JETFOREAL, you totally missed joe’s point, read it again this time slowly and put the beer down."
Ray Said:
Sat, December 20, 2008 - 3:10am ET"mike ex, your talking about players that play two different positions. Vilma played inside, VG is outside. David Harris is the reason Vilma became expendable. He fits the 4-3 better and preferred to go to a team that plays in a 4-3 so we accomodated him."
CFU Said:
Sat, December 20, 2008 - 8:50am ET"I agree T.Jones is a beast but Wash should get something as well. He was the spark we needed in a few games to get this team a W. Elam should get something for causing that fumble he saved the Jets season. I have a bad feeling about this game it will not be easy. Some how we always play to the opponents level. We will win but it will be another stressful Sunday for fans. Miami losses against KC. "
Drew Said:
Sat, December 20, 2008 - 1:10pm ET"Vet?? Once again I will school you in your ex Jet player fantasy....Miller is horrible CB he is not even playing CB for the Raiders and Leon is a better returner.. Vilma is a 4-3 MLB that was a little overrated. He is a 100+ tackles but Harris made plays as a rook behind the line of scrimmage than Vilma made in 2 yrs in the 3-4. Chad has played well but I'm riding Favre to the AFC East title!!!!"
BIG"L" Said:
Sun, December 21, 2008 - 8:49am ET"Snow,Cold,Wind-Just sum-up da elements of which #4 can play in. He has one of the best "WIN PCTS" as a QB in these kind of conditions if not da best! But u can't only depend on one playmaker.Today you'll see a team bring -down their house, special teams Def.,dat off.line OH! let's not forget our "Probowlers"Seagulls don't fly in da snow,But Jet's do -how did you think the arrived there.GO-JETS-GO!"
