File Under: Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, offensive line, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Tennessee Titans, Bill Callahan, Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Denver Broncos, Rich Gannon

11/26 — The Jets' offensive line received major props this week for its strong game at Tennessee. If you haven't rewatched the video yet, take some time to appreciate:

■ The left-side blocking, especially by D'Brickashaw Ferguson but also by Alan Faneca, on Thomas Jones' 10-yard screen-pass TD in the first quarter.

■ The sealing blocks just as they were drawn up by Damien Woody and Brandon Moore on Leon Washington's 61-yard fourth-quarter scoring strike.

■ Any of Nick Mangold's work, standing up Albert Haynesworth on one occasion and getting out to the Titans' talented LBs and keeping them away from the point of attack.

And who haven't we mentioned in this cavalcade of stars? How about some kudos for the OL coach, Bill Callahan?

"Bill's understanding of offensive line play is outstanding and his ability teach from a technical standpoint is outstanding," head coach Eric Mangini said at today's news conference that got the media week started toward Sunday's home game against Denver. "What I like more than that is he understands the big picture. He's been a head coach and coordinator on the pro level and the college level.

"He can explain 'This is a five-step drop, we're trying to get the ball here,' all the stuff you look for in an offensive line coach. Then it goes deeper than that, the sights, the hots, run/pass checks, everything. He's got a great understanding of that."

Another who understands what Callahan brings to a team is Rich Gannon. The former QB, who will be calling the Broncos game for CBS along with Kevin Harlan, played for Oakland when Callahan guided the Raiders all the way to Super Bowl XXXVII. Eric Allen and I talked with Gannon today for our "Jets Two-Minute Drive" radio show that will be up on newyorkjets.com later today, and I asked Rich about Coach Cally.

"Bill is a phenomenally gifted coach," Gannon said. "He was great for me out in Oakland. I really got to know him first as our offensive line coach under Jon Gruden. The running game, protection schemes — he knew it all. Brian Schottenheimer has benefited from him being with the Jets, Brett [Favre] has benefitted. You've got one of the premier offensive line coaches in the league."

Other Mangini Talking Points

The head coach was asked about Denver's Jay Cutler, whom the Jets wined and dined and quizzed down in Tennessee as they did their due QB diligence before the 2006 draft. Mangini said Cutler struck him that day and since as "very smart" and "conscientious." One other thing is his big arm.

"Yeah, he can get the ball deep," Mangini said, "and he can get the ball deep on the run. He doesn't have to have his feet set."

And when Cutler airs it out, the ball is often headed for the hands of Brandon Marshall. The coach was asked which pro receiver Marshall reminds him of and he didn't hesitate.

"I'd say Randy Moss," he said. "He's big, 6-4½, 230, he has excellent hands, really good run-after-catch, he's strong, he can run the full complement of routes, has good speed. He's really good."

Thus the Jets coach captured one of the dangers of Denver, which will come into this game with the third-ranked total offense and passing offense in terms of yardage,

As for the injury front, the coach offered just a little on LB David Harris and S Eric Smith.

"Eric will practice and David will practice some," Mangini said. "Both those guys will be out there."

Both Harris and Smith have not participated in practices the past four weeks. Their official statuses will be revealed shortly after 4 p.m. ET on the first of the week's injury reports on newyorkjets.com.

Finally for now, Mangini announced his post-victory players of the week for Tennessee: Offense — RB Leon Washington. Defense — S Abram Elam. Special Teams — Marques Murrell. Practice — QB Brett Ratliff.

"NJ Jets Fan, I agree Callahan deserves credit, but you need talent first & scheme second so I wouldn't say genius. Tannenbaum brought these guys together & Cally coached them up."

"Just to add to the discussion, currently the Jets are 8th in the league in rushing, averaging 131 yds/game. Big props to the O-line and Coaches. I still cant get over the fact that we put 192 rush yds on the titans. I remember during the pregame all the so called experts were saying the Jets aren't running anywhere, *cough, cris carter, *cough. Enjoy the grub and games fellow Jets fans. "

"Ira’s reference to the ’68 team reminded me of a thought I had last week. This team is looking like the same old, old Jets; 68 vintage. The only thing missing is a Johnny Sample clone to make the pass D complete. Maybe Ty Law can fill that role now that he’s here. The 68 team could afford to be a quick strike offensive team due to their shutdown D. This team must keep opposing O off field. Go Jets"
