File Under: Brad Smith, Leon Washington, Cody Spencer, Rashad Washington, Andre Dyson
07/29 — This morning's training camp practice was a Washington monument of sorts.
Leon Washington returned to uniform and to action after missing the previous two practices due to personal reasons. And the second-year scatback didn't look like he missed a step, especially on a dumpoff from Chad Pennington that No. 29 took darting and speeding deep into the secondary. The crowd of about 1,400 applauded.
Meanwhile fourth-year safety Rashad Washington came up with some strong defensive plays. FB Stacy Tutt couldn't find the handle on a short pass and the ball popped into the air, to be plucked by Rashad and taken back the other way. Later in the session, Washington came up and put a hard hit behind the line of scrimmage on RB Danny Ware.
LB Cody Spencer, who had a bit hit on Alvin Banks the previous practice, also laid a lick on Ware on a screen pass.
Brad Smith continued to work at QB and while two of his passes didn't look pretty, they found their marks.
The receiver both times was rookie Chansi Stuckey. The first was a wobbler off a rollout that Stuckey brought in over CB Alphonso Hodge. The second was in front of CB Rayshaun Kizer.
But Kizer got Ware back with an interception, at the end of which he was taken down hard by Ware.
Andre Dyson had excellent coverage on a Pennington-to-Justin McCareins end zone pass and swatted the ball away.
Kellen Clemens came up big on a "touchdown" pass to Alvin Banks, getting behind LB Eric Barton.
But neither Clemens nor Pennington could solve the defense during the practice-ending two-minute drill. This time both of the first two QBs needed a touchdown to overcome the 21-16 deficit. Pennington's last pass was intended for Laveranues Coles in the end zone that CB David Barrett swatted down. Clemens' drive ended on an interception by Hodge.
