File Under: Thomas Jones, Laveranues Coles, Kerry Collins, Albert Haynesworth, Brett Favre, Tennessee Titans

11/23 — It's a great day for a game in western Tennessee. The temperature is 52 degrees, the sun is bright and the breeze is minimal. And the Jets have opened the game well.

Ty Law starts at right cornerback, as he suggested he might Wednesday. And on the Jets' first three defensive snaps, they hold RB Chris Johnson to 3 yards on two carries and Darrelle Revis defenses Kerry Collins' first pass of the game, a deep out for WR Justin Gage.

Then the offense takes over and the Jets move beautifully down the field as Brett Favre opens throwing. He goes 6-for-6 for 72 yards, hitting four different receivers. The touchdown comes on a short flip to Thomas Jones, who weaves his way 10 yards for the touchdown. Barely six minutes into the game, it's Jets, 7-0.

It's the sixth consecutive game the Jets have scored on their opening drive, after going the previous nine games without a score on their opening drive.

The Titans get their first first down but then are stopped on third-and-1 when Kris Jenkins and Mike DeVito swarm over LenDale White for a yard loss.

Favre hits two more passes, making him 8-for-8. But then his next two dropbacks don't work out as well. He overthrows Laveranues Coles on a go down the right sideline, then is sacked by Vanden Bosch and Haynesworth.

After a nifty Reggie Hodges punt that flies and then bounces 50 yards to be downed at the 13, the Titans can't move again as both White and Johnson drop screen passes, sandwiched around a catch by Gage that is ruled an incompletion because his heel appears to hit the sideline. The ruling is greeted rudely by the LP Field crowd.

Then Craig Hentrich, a long time ago a Jets draft choice, can only punt 33 yards to the Titans 46 and the Jets have won a nice field position exchange.

But the field position isn't cashed in when Favre shovels a pass to Leon Washington, who gets 2 yards before he's stripped of the ball by Jevon Kearse, with DT Kevin Vickerson recovering at the 21 to end the scoring threat on the last play of the first quarter.

The Jets' 7-0 lead still equals the largest deficit the Titans have faced after the opening quarter this season. But it doesn't hurt to remind that the Jaguars led by 11 at home in the second quarter last week before getting wind burn as the Titans passed the Jags by in the second half.

Second Quarter

The game looked like it would be all Jets but it has now turned into a between-the-20s affair. The Titans helped out the Jets' cause on their first drive of the quarter with two more drops, by WR Justin McCareins and TE Bo Scaife, open down the middle.

But the Jets return the favor as Favre doesn't get enough air under a sideline throw for Laveranues Coles, who, despite seeming simultaneous possession with CB Cortland Finnegan, doesn't get the call. It is Favre's first interception in three games.

However, the Green & White defense pitches its third three-and-out of the half and Hentrich hits his second straight touchback punt.

But suddenly the Jets are moving again. Dustin Keller comes up with another tough third-down conversion catch, Thomas Jones is finding some cracks in the Tennessee run front, and then Favre hits Laveranues Coles, working new LCB Chris Carr, on a 25-yard slant.

Then comes a handoff to fullback Tony Richardson, who rambles 14 yards — his longest run in six years! — and an interference call on LB David Thornton covering Keller, and now it's first-and-10 at the Tennessee 11. After DT Tony Brown jumps offsides, it's third-and-1 at the 2. The Jets call a timeout with 4:10 left in the half to talk it over.

So on comes Jay Feely to drill the ball through those same posts from 20 yards out. It's not seven but it's three, at the end of another of the typical long drives the Favre offense puts together these days — 12 offensive plays, 78 yards, 7:20 off the clock — for a 10-0 Jets lead with four minutes left in the half.

After the kickoff the Titans seem to finally get into some rhythm that you knew they would. This rhythm is helped along by some yellow flags. The first flag is for David Barrett interference on TE Scaife, which was justified. Then there is a flag on Tennessee C Kevin Mawae for holding Kris Jenkins, which he certainly appeared to do. But after an officials' conference, referee Carl Cheffers waves off the hold.

The Titans pick up the first down at the Jets 41 as we hit the two-minute warning.

After the timeout, the home team gets one more big completion, a 17-yarder on third-and-10 from Collins to Scaife, before the Jets hold. Rob Bironas comes on to hit a 43-yard field goal. The Jets' shutout bid is over with 51 seconds left in the half as the Titans make it 10-3.

Haynesworth has been off the field or down on it a few times today, and he stays face down for a while after a Favre scramble. Big Albert finally gets up and walks off slowly, Favre kneels and the Jets take their 10-3 edge into the LP Field locker room.
