File Under: Eric Barton, Kerry Rhodes, David Bowens, Cody Spencer, Tony Gonzalez, Tyler Thigpen

10/26 — The Jets' physical woes continue after the Chiefs take second half kickoff and march toward the home team's goal line again. With David Harris riding the stationary bike behind the Jets bench, ILB is being manned by Eric Barton and David Bowens, with Bowens switching up with Cody Spencer.

And after a Tyler Thigpen completion to TE Tony Gonzalez to the Jets 22, S Kerry Rhodes is down and walks off slowly.

But Rhodes returns and the defense stiffens, forcing the visitors to settle for Barth's 30-yard field goal to give KC a 17-14 lead.

It is the Chiefs' first lead in three games, or since their only win of the season, by 33-19 over Denver in Week 4.

But Favre and the Jets have an answer that puts the Jets back in the lead, 21-17, with 48 seconds left in the third quarter. It's a 72-yard drive that started with a pair of second-down conversions from Favre to Laveranues Coles, added a third-and-6 chain-mover to Jerrrich Cotchery, then a 17-yard Thomas Jones burst through a massive left-side gash, and finally TJ following Tony Richardson over RG Brandon Moore and into the end zone on third-and-an-inch.

It was Jones' second crack on first-and-goal from the 2, and on both plays the Jets, hurting for TEs with both Chris Baker and Bubba Franks out, used two O-linemen as TEs in the heavy package: Robert Turner on the left side of the line, Wayne Hunter on the right side.

Fourth Quarter

The defense forces another punt and the Jets starting eating up real estate again, not in big chunks but in nice digestible bites. Jesse Chatman comes in the game and gets some leather time, and after he's tackled, Chiefs S Bernard Pollard adds 15 yards to the Green & White cause by getting flagged for taunting.

But the march from the Jets 22 to the Chiefs 8 comes horribly undone when Favre, trying to feather a third-and-2 pass to Chansi Stuckey, instead throws it right to rookie CB Brandon Flowers. Only Favre can stop Flowers, but Favre falls short of a tackle at the Jets 40 and Flowers completes a 91-yard interception-return TD that puts the Chiefs back in command, 24-21.

The play is the longest interception-return TD by a Jets opponent since Chris McAlister took a Vinny Testaverde pick 98 yards at Baltimore on Christmas Eve in 2000 and is the sixth-longest against the Jets in franchise history. Here are the longest IR-return TDs by opponents against the Jets  and Titans (DTX–Dallas Texans):

 Season Player Opp Yds
1968 Tom Janik at BUF 100
1961 Dave Grayson at DTX 99
2000 Chris McAlister at BAL 98
1995 Eugene Daniel at IND 97
1993 Eric Allen vs. PHI 94
2008 Brandon Flowers vs. KC 91

But the Jets climb off the deck again. First comes a three-and-out stop of the Chiefs (after Cody Spencer turns a first-and-10 at the KC-2 into first-and-10 at the 20 by trying to keep a Reggie Hodges punt out of the end zone). Then another Neon Leon beauty, as Leon Washington spins out of a tackle and takes a punt 37 yards to the Chiefs 46.

Favre, after being sacked on first down, hits his next five, with the payoff a 15-yarder to Coles, who snags the pass at the pylon off his right hip against the coverage of CB Dimitri Patterson to make it Jets, 28-24.

Following the kickoff, the Chiefs have 53 seconds to go 64 yards for the game-winning TD or go home with a 1-6 record.

Thigpen moves the visitors to the Jets 40 as time slips away, but on first down he's sacked by David Bowens at the 46. And that sets up the next three plays, and the final play for the Chiefs: fourth-and-1 at the 31, Thigpen looking for rookie WR Will Franklin over the middle, but throwing behind him — and Franklin trying to come back for the ball but running into CB Drew Coleman, also trying for the ball. Incomplete. Jets ball.

And with one Favre kneeldown, the Jets finish off their 28-24 victory. A shaky victory perhaps, but a W that improves the Jets to 4-3 and in a much better frame of mind to go up to Buffalo to play the Bills, who have lost to the Dolphins, 25-16.

"Damn, Randy! You are a class act. If the Jets GM slot opens up, I'm putting your name forward. However, I have one small niggle. Carmena Burana is not only darkly dramatic, but it is also heroic (think 300 Greeks against 1 Million Persians). The next time you call for it to be played, make sure it's on a Jets' drive, not the opponent's."

"What's wrong with a dramatic three-and-out, Rogue?"

"Randy, I figured that Favre's ability would give Schottenheimer's offensive playbook and make Mangini's sometimes strange decisions more meaning and legitimacy. Instead we have a truly fantastic team, questionable coaching decisions, and more offensive penalties than I can remember. Question: What year did the Jets have the most offensive penalties, and how did the team, QB, and RB do?"

"John, that's an interesting point. If you don't mind, I'll develop that into a Radar segment for a little later this week. Early research: the last time the Jets produced as many offensive penalties for a season was 1999."

"We Play the raiders with one of the worst secondaries in the nfl and we run the ball. Then comes the cheifs the worst run defense in the nfl and we go pass happy. Leon up the gut for a touchdown should have given them a clue on how to finish the game off. At the end of the day it is a win and I'll take and I am shure the Jets will to."
