10/21 — Jets 26, Bengals 14
The second quarter of the Jets' season started with a bang, or should I say with defense. Yes, defense wins games in the NFL.
And the Jets defense was outstanding, allowing just seven points, getting five sacks and holding Cincinnati's offense five times out of 10 possessions to 3 plays and out. Calvin Pace was everywhere, making big plays one after another.
Offensively, it was all Thomas Jones, scoring three times. What a great job by the offensive line. Alan Faneca was outstanding. His presence on the line is starting to rub off onto the other four lineman.
Facing an 0-5 team isn't that easy — you always have to beware of the winless. But the Jets came away with a victory and we're heading west to face Oakland the following week.
Great job, Jets fans, way to keep the energy level up.
Raiders 16, Jets 13, OT
Oakland ... One mistake after another. Besides the three turnover the Jets committed, they didn't play physical enough to beat the Raiders.
With that being said, they still had a chance to win, showing a lot of character and resilience in the fourth quarter. The biggest problem was pass protection. Brett Favre got hit more this game than he has all season.
Starting the game with four wide receivers helped move the ball, but in the end they had to settle for a field goal. NOT GOOD.
Since football is a team sport, the defense should take part of the blame also. Only two sacks on the afternoon, NO turnovers to offset the three by the offense, and allowing the Raiders to run the ball for well over 100 yards, unacceptable. Yes, special teams played their part also, allowing a fake punt late in the game, and a fumble by Leon Washington on a punt return really hurt.
Good news: another big game by Thomas Jones running the ball.
Point the finger at yourself, Jets, This was a game you could have won, should have won, but didn't. YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Winning in the NFL is hard. You're now 1-1 in the second quarter, you still have a chance to go 3-1, but you have to believe.
Guess what, Jets fans, Herm and the Chiefs are coming to town. This should be interesting.
Remember in the second quarter of the NFL season I said the Jets could make a run at 3-1 or maybe even 4-0? They're now 1-1 with two to play. Margin of error left: NONE.

I'm not impresed with the playcalling on offense and the D seems too inconsistent at times. I'm interested in hearing your comments"

Ball would be at least on the 30 and a relatively easy field goal from there, if not closer. After that, it was a lot of running and not trying to push the ball a little more."

Honestly, I like Mangini but I think he is way tooo Conservative. Take a chance, bet the farm. Tell your players hit them and make them feel it. Because we will not be pushed around. I just don;t want to see another 4-12 season and I hope this weekend we can romp the Chiefs...J-E-T-S"

Tue, October 21, 2008 - 1:13pm ET"Was this the most frustrating game to watch this year?? Maybe it is better that I couldnt watch it. Just hearing the agony in the posts by my normal Mangini and Jets supporters is discouraging. Just reading Marty's story got me more fired up. I am really hoping for a dominate bounce back this week so when I return to the states we are primed for a big game against the Bills. I need to get home"

Tue, October 21, 2008 - 1:16pm ET"Marty, i agree for the most part besides the part on the defense. Yes we need to create big plays but in the end if you take away the turnover on special teams the defense till plays solid and only allows 10 points in a four quarters. Our offense hurt our defense by never converting on 3rd downs. Right now if our offense needs to wake up and help out the defense who are playing very well."

Tue, October 21, 2008 - 1:51pm ET"This is what WE fans that have been JETS fans for 35 or MORE yrs. You hear the same THING everytime they lose to a team they SHOULD have beaten. We will LEARN from our mistakes! We will look at the tape and CORRECT our mistakes. Samething OVER and OVER again, no matter WHO the coach is or who the Jet players are; WE will LEARN from OUR MISTAKES! Same old Jets! MANGINI, learn to make ADJUSTMENTS!"

Tue, October 21, 2008 - 1:54pm ET"Drew, Lost in the loss was TJ's preformance which was outstanding. There are so many things to this game that you can look at. Not putting them away early was one and that fake punt was mind blowing."
Alan Said:
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 2:13pm ET"Has the offensive game plan left the building? I understand that Thomas Jones needed to get more involved - and he did. But ever since Favre threw for 6 TD passes against Arizona they refuse to throw long on a consistant basis. I understand Cotchery (?) fell down on a big play where he would have been open but they do not seem to throw long on a consistant basis any more. Why get Favre?"
Dunnie Said:
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 2:40pm ET"I don;t claim to be an expert. By from where I sit, mangini believes in targeting the other teams weakness. The problem is that the other teams know this a plan to beat that plan. There is no accountability on this team ... it seems way to powder puff for my taste. Some butts should sit this week based on last weeks performance. Where is Keller ? He had one catch for like 5 yards !!"

OK got me bye week That changes the whole sinaryo what was I thinking.. That's why I couldn't ever take your blogs serious even if I wanted to .. Can't believe I'm saying this but your logic is the same as mangini's & so far all it has been is excuses& failure .. Success is not an option"

Tue, October 21, 2008 - 4:30pm ET"Great Post! Maybe the Jets were a little over confident of a win on this one. The Raiders were taking no captives and I'm not sure the Jets really even came to play. They are better than this. What happened to all that talk about chemistry. Let's get tough Jets and show the Chiefs what you're made of!!!"

Tue, October 21, 2008 - 5:35pm ET"I'm just glad you TJ haters have nothing to say. Goes down after first contact my rear, tell me he didn't want it on Sunday. He should feel like Larry Johnson after what the supporting cast did on Offense, Brad Smith outplayed Favre. I'd have rather seen him come out starting the second half. ttyl guys"
Clint Said:
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 5:44pm ET"There 3-3. It's not like the end of the world. They will turn it around against KC and then we will see the following week if they can beat Buffalo. They do need to let Favre air it out. Is there something wrong with his shoulder or something. I don't remember him throwing the ball more than 25 yards except for the pick. Let him throw the ball. NUFF SAID"
CD Said:
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 8:27pm ET"Don't see it that way Row. I'm going to watch the replay tonight to try and figure out what you are referring to regarding Farve and Smith. TJ did great, but you gotta make it in the end zone to make it count. Almost is'nt good enough in today's NFL. Jets have the potential to do great, but will they be able to get it together quick enough to get it done this year. #4 is still a newbie!!!"

Wed, October 22, 2008 - 4:00am ET"sound familiar at all? My response was to list our two wins in a row. And then to tell you you would welch on your promise not to bash mangini anymore, which you immediately did. My entire post responded directly to yours. Don't make comments asking for proof and then get mad when you get it. Don't make promises you know you won't keep. And don't use words unless you know what they mean."

Wed, October 22, 2008 - 5:12am ET"Glad to see no one really blamed Favre for the loss.He put you in position to tie game at end with no time outs. If you don't score more than 13 points you are not gonna beat many NFL teams. The play calling in overtime, terrible. Ran on every first down. No trick plays or "no huddle" offense to keep Raider defense in check. "

And yes i agree with you the Raiders played more physical and seemed to want the game more. The Raiders' D was tired starting the OT and the Jets didn't take advantage of that. Still waiting for them to play a complete game. It must start this week. GO JETS!!!!"
