10/13 — One of the first things Eric Mangini talked about at today's news conference was his run defense. And as one of his mentors, Bill Parcells, always used to say, what's not to like?
"It's positive," Mangini said about his rush D, ranked third in the NFL this morning. "You always want to be able to stop the run. I think that's going to be so much more important in those games where weather becomes an issue — wind and rain affecting the passing game, but also when you get into the cold months, you have to be able to run the football and you have to stop the run. I think that's a very positive early part of what we've been able to do defensively."
To be sure, Kris Jenkins has been throwing his weight around very effectively from his nose tackle position — such as Sunday, when the Jets held the Bengals to 43 yards and had three tackles for loss after having none the previous two weeks combined.
But as Mangini said, Jenkins can't do it alone.
"I think it's the group," he said. "If one guy's not holding up outside, Jenk's still in the middle but the opponent can run more to the C-gap, outside of the outside linebacker. But BT [Bryan Thomas] has been a good edge-setter, and internally we have David Harris and Eric Barton, and Kenyon [Coleman] is stout against the run and so is Shaun [Ellis]. Playing our techniques and adding players like Calvin [Pace] and Jenk to the front seven I think has all helped."
There are many challenges to come — beginning with rookie Darren McFadden, Michael Bush and Justin Fargas and the Raiders' fourth-ranked rushing attack in Oakland on Sunday. But the Jets' No. 3 ranking in rushing yards allowed both per game and per rush, is pretty amazing considering many of this group were in last year's rushing defense that checked in at 32nd and last after Week 10 and the 2006 group that ranked as low as 30th.
In fact, the best a Jets rush defense has ranked going back to 1995 is fourth, and that was only after the opening week of the 2000 season.
Here are the Jets' best rushing defense finishes since the 1970 merger (*after six weeks);
| Season | Ranking | Yards/Game | Yards/Att |
| 1970 | 2nd | 91.6 | 3.1 |
| 1979 | 3rd | 106.6 | 3.4 |
| 1985 | 3rd | 94.8 | 3.5 |
| 1991 | 4th | 90.1 | 3.8 |
| 1993 | 5th | 92.1 | 3.5 |
| 2004 | 5th | 97.9 | 3.6 |
| 2008* | 3rd | 69.0 | 2.9 |
Mangini fielded a few personnel questions. The one issue to be resolved is S Eric Smith's status after his one-game suspension for Cincinnati.
"We have a roster exemption until tomorrow," the coach said. "Then we'll have to make a decision on what transaction we'll make. But we don't have to do that until tomorrow by 4 o'clock."
Mangini was then asked about Abram Elam's first start of the season in Smith's place.
"I thought he did a nice job," he said, "but I thought he did a nice job in training camp. It was not a function of him playing poorly, it was a function of Eric playing well. But I have complete confidence in him. I'm not opposed to both those guys playing during the course of a game. You could keep both guys fresh. And both play on special teams, which can get a little tiring late in games."
Mangini said Justin Miller was close to being activated for the Bengals but it came down to who could contribute more plays both at his scrimmage position and on special teams. Jesse Chatman got the nod on Sunday.
As for a possible return of Mike Nugent as the Jets' kicker, Mangini said, "I'm not sure. I wouldn't even touch on that until Friday just because guys during the week are up and down."

Mon, October 13, 2008 - 4:43pm EDT"randy, Like you showed with your stat chart this front seven vs the run is the best i have seen in a long time. Pace and Thomas are really playing very well and Jenkins is the anchor in the middle. This raider game will be a good test. Both their backs are good but the Jets should be able to play 8 man fronts all day because Russell has played very bad so far. GO JETS!!!!"
Frank Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 5:12pm EDT"We need to work on the short yardage defense specifically stopping teams on 3rd & 4th down and the goal line defense. It's great we can stop the run between the 20's because teams have been able to pass on us. The real key is to make the stops to end drives and to make stops at the goal line. The Raider offense plays into the Jets defensive strength and should be an easy game for the defense. "
Drew Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 7:13pm EDT"The run D has been a huge upgrade. The pass D has and will get better. Alot of what happened with Cardinals was a result of the score. The real issue is getting off the field on 3rd and long more than 3 and short. They gave up a ton of these plays against the Pats and Chargers...A Carroll should get cut when Smith comes back. Has anyone noticed the "great" job Belichick has done? 2 blowout losses!"

Mon, October 13, 2008 - 7:19pm EDT"our Run D is making me proud. Jenkins is panning out to be the best FA acquisition in a long time. Pace also is a beast. On the O side, we had another potential disaster when Favre thought he had a free play and threw across the field, almost for a pick 6. turns out it was a false start and we would have gotten nailed had the D picked it. Favre is great but this kind of stuff needs to be corrected"
Jeremy Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 7:32pm EDT"Oak will definetly be a test, but Revis and Lowery can play Man very well which means we can stack the box and force Russell to beat us through the air. I like our chances that way! Would like to see Rhodes and Elam up on the line to help out as well! My concern is with the screen passes out of the backfield and the short crossing routes--those plays always seem to kill the D! "
Ira Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 8:14pm EDT"The defense did good on 3rd conversions yesterday. They held the Bengals to 5-15 for 33% which is great and they should have the same success this week in Oakland. I felt this defense would carry the team early on and except for the 2nd half vs the Cards is really starting to come together. Elam must get the start this week."

Mon, October 13, 2008 - 8:25pm EDT"People keep refering to Jenkins as a free agent move.....it was a trade. Pace and Faneca might pan out as TWO of our best free agent moves. If not for a so-so draft Tanenbaum would get an "A" for his offseason. Call it a solid B+"

I look to either see more Gholston, this 1st round thing is disgusting me. Drew, it's game 6 and Desean Jackson looks like a pro bowl receiver. 433 yards, 29 catches and a punt return for a TD."

They can run the ball and avg 141 yds on the ground per game. BTW Vilma is #2 in the league in tackles with 56[he is in the right system] which is good news for the Jets. "

No need to force him out there when he isn't ready. Tue, October 14, 2008 - 1:34pm EDT"We all remember what happened to Vilma. Stud All-Pro LB got traded b/c he didn't fit the scheme. Now he's back to that form with the Saints. Why do the JETS think they can switch Gholston to an OLB? I can see the same thing happening a year or two down the road! This was a complete bust! 5 games and 5 tackles from a 6th pick! If he becomes a Mario WIlliams in year 2 I'll eat my words, but come on!"
Jeremy Said:
Tue, October 14, 2008 - 1:45pm EDT"Uncle Joe, lets keep the Vilma Train rolling: 7 tackles brings him to 56(Gholston's number, jersey that is, not tackles-just drop the 6 that would be his tackles) and 2nd in the league. D.Harris is solid with 37 (34th in the league). Guess who also has 37 tackles an OLB (Gholston's intended position) and a rookie--Keith Rivers. Oh, and he also has a FF and INT. Gholston or Rivers---that's easy!"

Their secondary on paper Wilson, Huff, Hall and Asomugha are all very good players. Hall and Asomugha are top CB's. The Jets must have a good mix of run/pass and protect the ball. The defense if they come to play can make big plays. can't take this game for granted. Jets 23 - Raiders 17. GO JETS!!!!"

Gholston is big, quick, and would be perfect for the lolb spot down the road on the QB's blindspot. Mangini is trying to develop this man like Parcell's developed Demarcus Ware who is a complete LB. Besides it's only been 5 games and BT and CP are having a pro bowl yr. 9 sacks and 3 FF combined!"

Hope it continues this week in Oakland.Maybe they should bring Schotty down from the box and let him coach from the field like he did his 1st 2 season with the Jets."

Chad is doing what he did in 2006 under Mangini. How about guys like D-Rob, Hobson, Dyson??? These players you speak of were replaced by better players....Jenkins, Harris, Lowery, Pace and BRETT FAVRE!! You're reaching to prove no point..... Do some homework and try again"

Cause he hasn't shown me anything ..Watch him play & know he can do much better then he's showing ...The coaches need to get him fired up or grow up either or .. explain 2 him why he's got paid & why he's here.. Or get rid of him ..Tired of these guy's getting rich on us then go else where & play like the pro's we thought they were On draft Da"

Phins beat the Chargers we beat the Phins, but the Chargers beat us? My point is, no game is an easy game or a walk thru, so whether we win sloppy or not it best to rack up wins while we get better as a team so we can really start rolling, stop complaining."

Gholston is getting pressure in spot Duty... But who else would we have taken in the first rnd that would have been giving us a better season right now?"

Looks like he's asleep at the wheel whever he plays..I dont think it should have taken this long to make an impact....does he have a learning disorder or something?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Jetzman, you asked me a direct question, so my answer is why not give the guy a year before saying really bad things about him? If for no other reason, be patient because Gholston is playing behind two OLBs in Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace who are on pace to combine for 25-plus sacks. Vernon will be fine."

Thu, October 16, 2008 - 7:56pm EDT"Say Ray, nfl.com has a video analysis of the play I referred to here: http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80bb0921 That's quite a dink! 53 yards, the last 20 of which were yac. I would love it if our current OC were more daring & creative. It's only lack of imagination that keeps you from seeing the kind if mayhem that the Jets' offense could create with Brad Smith out there to throw/run."
Ray Said:
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 1:09am EDT"Ed I don't need to go to nfl.com, I saw the play on sunday. Yeah if someone is wide open down the field with no one within 30 yards Chad can loft a floater up there and they can wait on it. We don't need to run a wild cat offense with direct snaps to TJ and a bunch of motion anymore. That's not daring that's desperation because they can't run anything else."

Fri, October 17, 2008 - 4:37am EDT"Uncle joe why would you want to get rid of Vernon Gholston, you really sound retarded! This man has to learn the new system give him time and let him come into his own! When Brick got started he gave up a bunch of unprotected blocks causing Chad to get massacred on the field BUT AFTER TWO SEASONS "BRICK" IS OUT THERE DOING HIS THING, stop trying to sound like an expert and look and see how VWgrows"
Ed in Tucson Said:
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 6:28pm EDT"You Devil Ray, It's clear from reading your writing that your shtick is to be a contrarian. Your first criticism was to put the 'phins' offense as dink/dunk. When I offered proof that your argument was bogus you come back with the nonsequitur that it was "desperation." It seems that you don't remember the play from Sunday because there was NOT a lot of motion, just an elegantly designed play."
Ray Said:
Sat, October 18, 2008 - 3:06pm EDT"Ed I don't need an english lesson. I watched the play and it all runs off the wildcat formation. In other words it is trickery. They couldn't score on anyone before that play. Call it elegant if you with I call it running an offense using trickery because nothing else works."
Ed in Tucson Said:
Sat, October 18, 2008 - 10:38pm EDT"English lesson? Whasamada Ray, to many sillybulls for ya? The lesson you need is in logic & argumentation. I'm talking about plays & you counter by criticizing the formation. Bottom line, smart coaches use what works & ignore the critics who clearly don't know what they're talking about. A variation of that play can be run from ANY formation.Minds, like parachutes, work best when open. Go Jets!"

Sun, October 19, 2008 - 12:22am EDT"Guys, I'm a die-hard jet fan too, but I'm a realist. The Jets rush defense looks especially good on paper because we have a mediocre secondary. It's a bunch of young guys who are inconsistent I hate to say; refer to cardinal game. Fact is Oakland is a must win, and the Jets do a good job of makin you sweat. The Raiders rush offense sorry to say is better than our rush defense. We'll win a close 1"
Ray Said:
Sun, October 19, 2008 - 1:09am EDT"Yeah Ed, your too smart for me!! All those big words confuse me so. So far your "logic" consists of falling in love with a cute little play the fins are running 15 times a game because their dink and dunk offense can't sustain a drive otherwise. If the Jets want to use something like that once or twice I am all for it. To be wishing we had the fins OC isn't logic, so I don't need an argument."
Ray Said:
Sun, October 19, 2008 - 1:20am EDT"Then again Ed, I prefer smash mouth offense and a verticle passing game to elegant trickery. Luckily, our coaches have, like you so eloquently pointed out, smartly ignored being drawn into an offense we don't need to use anymore and are going with a gameplan more suited to our current qb not our former one. Bottom line Ed, I'm not a fan of that offense and won't be upset if they don't use it."

What's going on with Vernon Gholston though? The guy was the #6 overall and is being paid a boatload of $, but he hardly gets any PT. There were questions about this giys work ethic b4 the draft, maybe they should've traded down."
