File Under: Marvin Lewis, Carson Palmer, Cincinnati Bengals, Ryan Fitzpatrick

10/10 — This just in, a story written by Geoff Hobson that went up on Bengals.com at 1:25 p.m.:

Head coach Marvin Lewis said after practice Friday that backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Sunday in New Jersey against the Jets in place of Carson Palmer as he continues to battle a throwing elbow injury.

Lewis indicated Palmer's injury is not a season-ending condition, but the club wants to try getting him some rest so it doesn't become a week-to-week situation. Lewis didn't rule out Palmer as a backup for Sunday and wouldn't say if he will be the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback.

"We're trying to get it not a week-to-week thing," Lewis said. "We want to get the thing calmed down so it doesn't give him any irritation or problems at all."

The first clue that this Friday might be different than last Friday came when Palmer didn't emerge from the training room until almost all of his teammates were on the field for the beginning of practice.

Then instead of heading that way, he veered to what looked to be the weight room with rehab director Nick Cosgray, and he didn't appear on the field until after stretching and during the specialists set.

Palmer was dressed, but without his helmet and wasn't throwing. He had what looked to be ice wrapped around his bothersome throwing elbow while Fitzpatrick threw routes to the tight ends and wide receivers.

Because of the timing of the announcement, coach Eric Mangini wasn't asked about the Bengals' QB switch at his afternoon news conference. But cornerback Darrelle Revis, asked about the change, said today, "It's surprising. We didn't expeect  that. We've seen him on film. He throws a good ball."

"I'm not that ready to jump on the wagon and say we already won before the game is even played. If the Jets think that way we will lose. We need good D and mistake free in the secondary. Were going up against the 2 best WR in the league don't sleep on the Bengals Jets. The Bengals want a win bad we need to play good football all 4 quarters if we want to win. Bengals nearly upset the Giants,Cowboys."

"Ok, as seen in the AZ game, the offensive chemistry is finally there. Jets just had a bye week to improve it even more and to improve the defensive passing coverage as well. Jets are reunited with Chatman, so I imagine the running game should be improved. Now the winless Bengals are on the road, with their backup QB starting. The Jets WILL win. Afterall, they'll be in their Titans uniforms. Ha ha."

"I think the Bengals re-signed Kenny Watson just because of how he destroyed us last year. I don't want to see this again. Noticed Coles and Jenkins are questionable, why am I learning this now? What will be interesting is next week when we either see Clowney go the the IR, bump someone off the roster, or get released. "
