10/01 — Today is getaway day for the Jets. It's their last practice of the bye week before four days away from the Atlantic Health Training Center, so you'd want to stand far enough to the side that you don't get any windburn from the players as they leave the facility.
But head coach Eric Mangini has a way of keeping his players around a little longer after today's practice ends in about a half-hour. A special guest is scheduled to arrive at the complex in a short while: Oscar de la Hoya, the six-division world boxing champion who is in the area to kick off the promotion of his Dec. 6 non-title fight with Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.
"I know he's going to be busy this afternoon with a press conference," said head coach Eric Mangini, a big boxing and mixed-martial arts fan. "But he's supposed to come out and I appreciate that. I know the guys are excited to talk to him and I've always admired him so hopefully that'll be able to happen."
Mangini, of course, continues to list Teddy Atlas, the legendary boxing trainer and TV analyst, as "special assistant—boxing" on his coaching staff. He values the input that top boxers, or football players or Olympians, can provide to his players.
"It's not going to be Oscar specifically addressing the team," Mangini said. "But anytime you have a chance to talk to a great champion, a great athlete, someone who's been as successful as he's been for as long as he's been, in terms of his discipline and training habits, regardless of what sport you're in, there are common themes, common threads.
"Just those conversations I hope have value. I don't know what each guy will ask him or how those conversations will go, but anytime you get a chance to bring in someone like him, it's a good opportunity."
Update: As it turned out, de la Hoya was not able to make it to the Jets' training facility today. No word on if his visit will be rescheduled for after his fight with Pacquiao.
Brett Gets First Awards as Jet
Not surprisingly, Brett Favre has garnered his first NFL honors as the Jets' quarterback following his performance against Arizona on Sunday. Favre was named the AFC's Offensive Player of the Week for his personal-best, team-record-tying six touchdown passes. (Later in the day, he was also named AP's NFL Player of the Week.)
This was also his first award as an AFC player. Favre won the league's O-POW award 12 times as the Packers' QB, most recently after Week 4 last season. He's also the first Jet to take Offensive Player of the Week since Chad Pennington was selected after the opening weekend of the 2006 season.
The Offensive Player of the Week award is part of the league's weekly award system and is not related to the three sponsored, league-sanctioned awards I passed on to you Tuesday, in which fans can vote online for Favre as FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week, CB Darrelle Revis for GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Week and TE Dustin Keller for Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week.
Favre Also Guests on Jets Radio
No. 4 also took time out from his always busy week to make his first appearance with Eric Allen and me on our weekly "Jets Two-Minute Drive" show that will be on newyorkjets.com a day earlier than usual, Thursday at 3 p.m.
We sat along the sideline in the team's new fieldhouse to tape our show. Favre came along shortly after his morning meeting was done, bearing a few smoothies from the team cafeteria, and sat down with us for more than 10 minutes.
I tried to make Brett feel a little more at home with a prop I brought in just for the taping. What that prop is will be apparent if you watch the video of our session produced by multimedia director Rich Gentile that will be on the site soon after the radio show goes live. But if you listen to the show, you may be confused by what the prop is.
It's a white baseball cap with MISSISSIPPI on the front. I swear I didn't buy it this past Aug. 7 when Favre, one of the most famous Mississippians of all time, was traded to the Jets. As Brett correctly assessed: "It looks pre-Katrina." I bought the hat when the Jets played two preseason games, one in 1995 and the other the next season. I've worn the hat only rarely since, as the sweat stains on the bill of the hat will attest.
Favre talked about some of the usual stuff and some less than usual matters with us — about his growing comfort level with the team, tying Joe Namath's franchise record for TD passes in a game, what he's going to do for the upcoming bye weekend, and the story on those shoulder pads with the yellow lining he wears that some fans have asked about.
Thanks to Favre and all who helped get this special bye-week "Drive" show up and running. We hope you will enjoy the show.

Wed, October 1, 2008 - 4:28pm ET"Haven't heard much about Teddy Atlas helping the JETS this year-Is that part of the reason the JETS have given up 10 sacks already this year? Or can we continue to blame D'Bust for those? After all he gives up double digit sacks every year--NOT much of a 1st rounder!! Maybe we can get some MMA and Wrestlers in there to help with foot work and balance. Hopefully Callahan can straighten him up? "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, October 1, 2008 - 4:59pm ET"The 3-4 D guys normally do not put up big sack & tackle numbers that is just the way it is I would rather have us play the 4-3 but it is what it is. Anyway Sutton needs to blitz more no more rushing 3 3-4 lineman we need to bring at least 1 LB on every play AT LEAST we need a pash rush like the Steelers, Chargers & Pats BRING THE HEAT SUTTON !"
Jimmer Said:
Wed, October 1, 2008 - 5:35pm ET"Who cares if you like De La Hoya or not. Mangini is still trying to surround the players with champions. If you can see the desire remaining after already being there, you will work even harder for your first. And omg, the defense needs to see what desire is after the 2nd half Sunday. "
Ira Said:
Wed, October 1, 2008 - 6:04pm ET"Randy, Didn't Eric have De la Hoya speak to the team or another boxer before the beat the Pats up in Foxboro in 06? Kudo to Favre and well deserved."
Randy Lange Said:
"What I wrote at the time, Ira, was that Coach Mangini showed the Jets the 1964 heavyweight title bout between Cassius Clay and Sonny Liston the night before the Jets beat the Patriots at New England, 17-14. In that fight, the future Muhammad Ali upset the champ Liston, who didn't come out for Round 7. The theme of the replay for the Jets: You can't beat them if you don't fight them."
Drew Said:
Wed, October 1, 2008 - 8:05pm ET"This is another story why like what Mangini has done with the team. He came in after a bad departure from Herm and changed the attitude of the team and went to the playoffs. He had to rock the boat a little and hurt some feelings in the process (media included) I question hisroster and the kicking debacle but he has started to relate the players alot more in year 3. Nice touch with De La Hoya."
Ira Said:
Wed, October 1, 2008 - 8:07pm ET"Randy, Thanks i most have had a memory lapse. Sorry to hear that Boldin is hurt with that sinus problem. I was hoping the Cards could beat the Bills this week. Without Boldin it will be hard. The Bills are due for a let down. I still think the Cards will knock off the Bills. Cards 30 - Bills 24 GO CARDS!!!! And GO 49er's too."

That kinda of thing gives players a lil extra umph something else to fight for."

Thu, October 2, 2008 - 3:10am ET"I'm all for any type of creative coaching. One thing I've noticed is the D doesn't make as many situational calls as necessary. I would like to see blitz packages that overload a key group of players, or where a RB would normally block. The Miami game proves we have not done this well. We were a pick or a pass interference call from losing. Just a note, we punted 6 times in that game. Rest up guys"
Ira Said:
Thu, October 2, 2008 - 8:31am ET"Since the Jets just wore their Titans uniforms last week and are wearing them again for the Bengals game i came up with this Titans' stat. In 1960 their 1st year they had two 1,000 yd WR's. Maynard 1265 and Powell 1167. Amazing #'s for only a 14 game schedule."

Thu, October 2, 2008 - 1:53pm ET"Do the Jets allow Favre the ability to audible? There were many occasions in the Arizona game that Cotchery was being covered by a linebacker and the safety was deep. On those occasions they ran the ball to the other side It seems this an obvious mismatch in speed and it seemed they could have audibled to a better play than a run. "

Randy Lange Said:
"Damone, no news other than Coach Mangini saying before the Arizona game that Justin Miller's recovery is "good, he's moving along" and that the Jets would "evaluate on gameday." Miller was deactivated before the Cards game."

Thu, October 2, 2008 - 9:11pm ET"Hi all you Jets fans. I admit I don't know alot about the team but I am sure you have a better chance than GB. With egomaniacal Ted T running them helm they have a fragile qb with rookie backups. Enjoy the year and I hope the Jets make the Superbowl. I watch as much as possible in N.E. Wisconsin where we call him Jet Brett. From what I've seen, the Jets have a good shot, despite the problems."
Ira Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 7:48am ET"After 4 games LC is on pace to have a 1028 yd season,J-Co 972 yds and TJ 1016 yds. I think TJ's #'s will go up as the weather gets colder and the running game gets better. Still think TJ could finish with 1300 or more yds."
Drew Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 10:32am ET"I want to address the we can build wins against weaker teams after the bye. We beat a Miami team that slaughtered NE, we then got hammered by a SD team that was 0-2 and almost lost the Raiders last week. We threw a beating on the Cardinals that beat a good SF team and destroyed Miami. My point is every win in the NFL is a good win. The league is so even there are no "easy" wins. Look at KC&Denver"
Drew Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 10:41am ET"There's a thoery that Mangini cannot win games against "good" teams. The theory has a ton of holes in it. If the Cardinals finish 8-8 it shows that we didnt beat a team with a winning record. But when we played then they were 2-1 and dangerous. Same thing for wins GB, Minn and Buff in 06. I also know that Mangini went into NE in 06 and outcoached Belicheck and beat a great Steeler team in 07. "
Row Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 1:04pm ET"Ira, I agree with you on the 1300 by TJ, but you have to remember our OC. I actually believe we barely hung in there with Arizona, having to go for it on 4th and short b/c of a pitiful running game. You can't blame TJ when he has a guy tugging on his jersey as he's handed the ball. I will bet if you ask Curtis, he could fix our running game in 20 minutes. B schott, no glory for showboating our QB."
Ira Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 2:28pm ET"Drew, Very good point. You don't have to convince me. He has come up with some big wins against good teams. maybe not enough but lets hope that changes this year. Row, I am telling you Callahan's and Schotty's schemes with the running game are still not on the same page. It will be cleared up this week and i have a feeling they will have a big day running the ball vs the Bengals."
Alan Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 4:45pm ET"I agree Ira this running game needs to pick up, we have a great 1,2 punch with Leon and TJ, but schotty needs to learn how to use them effectlively, then our offense would be deadly on 2 sides of the offensive game, We need work on the rushing offense this bye week, and take that into a as of no 0-4 cincinatti team whos still trying to get in rhythm, as well as the Pass defence we cant allow 400"
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 6:02pm ET"T Jones is not a good RB I have been saying this for months he is old & slow RB'S do 3 things 1 shake guys 2 out run guys or 3 run them over he does none of the above. He runs out of bounds or as soon as he is about to get hit he falls forward HE DOES NOT WANT TO GET HIT. He is not good at all we may be better off splitting the runs with Leon & Chatman. Leon can out run & shake guys & Chatman runs"
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 6:04pm ET"harder than T Jones & on a side note Drew captain of the blog if I may speak the 49ers have not played Miami this year but I get your point there are no easy wins in the NFL "
Drew Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 8:23pm ET"Spicer...My wording was probably confusing but I meant that the Cardinals beat Miami and the 49ers..... But thanks for looking out. "
Ira Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 9:41pm ET"Alan, They will swt the tone and run the ball next week. Believe me Eric remembers when he got into a shootout with the Bengals last year and lost 38-31 after leading at halftime 20-10. I am not saying to not let Favre attack but they will try to keep the Bengals offense off the field. After the Boys blow them out this week the Bengals will be mad and season on the brink come the Jets game. "

Frank Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 10:39pm ET"Drew your rants are borderline hysteria at this point. Herm's last year was marked by devastating injuries to several key players the year before we should have won it all. Mangini inherited a talented team and won 10 games with it and went straight downhill from there. He had a completely healthy team last year with the best players on the team playing out of position a horrible coaching job..."
Frank Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 10:43pm ET"...Furthermore he has won exactly 2 games vs. good teams the Pats in 06 like you said and the Steelers last year that is it and that is a lousy job. Now before you go nuclear he still has 12 games to show he has learned something and made the proper adjustments. I am being extremely critical because the excuses are over and he must show results the first 4 games have been sloopy."
Row Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 10:53pm ET"Spice, there is nothing supporting your argument. Obviously you haven't been to practice, or watched any games. If I remember correctly the TD in Miami was from about 7 yards out. TJ gets hit, just in the backfield. There was no reason for TJ to run vs 2nd and 3rd string D's, that's for Chatman, who will fight to dress. Tony Richardson needs to lead block out of the I, DUH! GO JETS ENJOY THE WKND!"
Alan Said:
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 11:09pm ET"Drew i know the cardinals beat Miami and 49ers but the Dolphins destroyed a team that we lost to called the patriots, and also How can TJ play when he only gets like 10 or so carries a game now adays, and he breaks tackles constantly and runs over people, its people who are scared of him, not him scared of people, if i saw someone with his sized muscles runnin at me full speed id run away "

Alan T Jones does not break tackles & he does not run guys over he goes down on 1st contact I am telling you watch the game again. You guys need to stop drinking the green kool aid it the same thing when we had Chad O he is great so on & so on WAKE UP you say that "
Drew Said:
Sat, October 4, 2008 - 9:47am ET"That was my point Alan.. the league is so even there are no easy wins.....I was just about to have a melt down with your post Frank about Herm and injuries. Herm had an out of shape team (his fault) and was campaigning for the Chief job. Mangini gets credit for 06 BUT then I noticed your an ORielly fan. Big fan of the Factor!!!! If you ever put my name and Biden's in the same post we're done!!!! LOL"

Ira Said:
Sat, October 4, 2008 - 9:53am ET"Zartan, Give Randy a break the guy works 24/7. Its the bye week. Row, Don't be surprised if Chatman so how get worked into the game plan. I know its hard to to get everybody touches but Chatman actually might be a better short yardage back than TJ is. It would be nice to see them get all 3 involved somehow. Problem is TJ is at his best when he carries the ball 20 plus. GO JETS!!!"
Frank Said:
Sat, October 4, 2008 - 9:53am ET"Drew I mentioned similarities before but are you related to Joe Biden? Do you ever care what the facts are or do you have your own version of history? In 2006 Green Bay finished 8-8 that is not a winning record the Vikings finished 6-10 and Buffalo finished 7-9 and all had a losing record when they played the Jets. Again you prove you can't have an unbiased football discussion because of Jet smog."

The Jets need to be able to run the ball to the outside like the Cowboys did today. The Bengals had no outside containment at all. Leon and Chatman will get the ball. TJ will pound it inside.GO JETS!!!!"
Frank Said:
Sun, October 5, 2008 - 8:48pm ET"Drew don't tell me you didn't watch the game? I know you did you closet Giants fan...Mangini should do a case study on the Giants this week they do look good and I would prefer that the Jets were doing better than they but I enjoyed the game no less. I don't judge this team by how other teams do when they aren't playing the Jets. Sorry mike ex, can't agree with your assessment once again."

I will thank A Wilson for knocking out Edwards though!!"
