09/04 — As you would expect, head coach Eric Mangini has forewarned the Jets of the challenge ahead of them at Miami on Sunday, and in particular of one reemphasized element of the Dolphins' attack.
"One thing that's tough with Miami is to simulate how physical they are," Mangini said at this morning's news conference at the Atlantic Health Training Center. "I think both sides of the line are big, they're physical and you simulate it the best way you can.
"It's one of those things that is different in the game with the speed picking up. Especially defensively, they're able to rotate through a lot of different defensive linemen and even outside linebackers, all having the same general characteristics."
This is a case of the new personnel not falling far from the coaching tree of Bill Parcells, who is of course the 'Fins' new football godfather (officially executive vice president–football operations).
Typically, Mangini said, Tuna teams "are going to be in good shape, they're going to be physical, they're going to be tough and they're going to be disciplined. Those are all really good traits to have as a football team. It's something we're all striving for, whether it's head coaches or general managers."
And if you want a voice as unbiased for the Dolphins as mine is for the Jets, you can check out my counterpart at miamidolphins.com, Andy Cohen, who writes that "This Is No Longer Last Year's Dolphins":
No, we're not predicting some amazing story here. These Dolphins are still young and have many miles to travel. But the bottom line here is this: It is abundantly clear ... that the Dolphins will be significantly improved this season, that the right people are now calling the shots and that this re-shaped, re-focused and re-built group will in no way resemble the team we were forced to endure a season ago. Anybody care to dispute this?
So do you remember last year's Game 3, when the Chad Pennington Jets opened a 31-13 lead (then held on against Ronnie Brown's onslaught for the 31-28 win), or Game 12 when the Kellen Clemens offense and the David Harris defense rolled up a 41-13 triumph? Forget about it.
"They're a good team, much improved from last year," said DE Mike DeVito, who moved solidly into the D-line rotation while playing much for Shaun Ellis this preseason. "They bring a lot to the table."
And the Dolphins are doing it physically.
Dan and Brett
Dan Marino, now of course with CBS, spent this morning at the Jets' new training center. The occasion: a one-on-one, great-QB-to-great-QB interview with Brett Favre for Sunday airing on the network's pregame show.
Health of the Rivalry
Today's injury report just came out and remains the same as Wednesday's report. The Jets list seven players — six who were limited at practice and WR David Clowney, who is out. The Dolphins list no injured players.
Friday reports, you'll remember, include each injured player's participation in practice and his status for the upcoming game.

Randy Lange Said:
"We're working on more photos of the new facility. But some upcoming games might intervene."
Ira Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 3:30pm ET"I couldn't agree more with the message Eric gave the team.On paper the names are not stars but this will be a very physical team. randy, Wait till you talk to Simms. He says this team has Parcells' stamp all over it. Even my man Sid Rosenberg down in Miami says the Dolphins will win 5-6 games this year. This will be a very close game something like Jets 20 - Dolphins 17. GO JETS!!!!"
MikeMc Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 3:46pm ET"Harborrat, I think thats the key for a Jet victory, pressure on Pennington, stuff the run, keep them inside, contain, contain, contain. If we get a lead & force Penny into throwing situations the Fins are in real trouble."
Drew Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 3:46pm ET"People can say what they want but Parcells is not coaching this team. If he was I would buy the Dolphins have turned things around. They will be better but I hear people talking 8-8 or 9-7?? Are they insane?? Fact is if Chad wasnt starting this game for Miami this would be a absolute blowout. Chad will keep the game close and it might be a battle into the 3rd quarter. Jet win 27-13!!!!!"
scjoe Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 4:12pm ET"I thought this upcoming game with Miami was a little scary even before Chad got there, now it becomes a little bit more scary because Chad is a much better QB then what they had before."
Frank Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 4:26pm ET"This is simple if this team is going to be successful on the field this year they need to come out and destroy a clearly inferior opponet. If Mangini turns the team loose both on offense and defense they will clobber the Phins. Jets first offensive play from scrimmage, 2 TE set with TJ and TR lined up in the backfield play action fake to TJ Favre rolls right and hits JK 50 yards downfield TD Jets!"
Xavion Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 4:44pm ET"To be honest before Chad went there I was not in the least afraid of the Team Now with Chad there It is a lil bit of that Peak of the roller coaster feeling... But I believe Miami D is in no postion to beat us... I guess NE got all the info they wanted from Posiak... Not to overlook the Phins but I think we have a Great shot at beating the Pats...."
Moshe Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 4:45pm ET"Can anybody give me a reason why the Jets won't beat the Dolphins? There's no way they're losing!"
Xavion Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 4:48pm ET"also I am so excited that the game will be broadcast nationally by CBS Living here in Charlotte I usually have to go to a bar every sunday. which i dont mind but It feels great to record the game on my Dvr and watch them over and with Week 2 vs NE being a high profile match up and monday night vs SD I could have 3 Games On my DVR Unprecedented... Damn Directv and that Contract!!!"

Zippy Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 6:17pm ET"Shut Up Moshe - R U crazy?? If you've been a Jet fan as long as I have, you KNOW that Jets can always figure out a way to lose. We must stay humble and avoid over-optimism - only then might we enjoy a victory over those stinkin Dolphins."
Queens Jet Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 6:40pm ET"I can give you one good reason why the jets CAN lose this game, or the next game with MIAMI... CHAD! Although we typically own the fish, Chad is a winner and leader, he can find a way to beat us, so yes, im scared of him & I totally expect him to beat us at least once..."
Scooter Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 6:52pm ET"How can we lose? 30% chance of rain and Fins leave field uncovered (they claim to have no tarp) and Favre can't get his footing and throws 2 INTs. Do he do that (Get it? "Do he") :^) Are you nuts? As we say when Miami comes to town..."Kill Flipper!" Jets win easily, but Chad will make it close late just to torment us. (If Physical is #2, I don't want to know #1 #1dolphinsfan!)"
jets4life Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 8:08pm ET"Ok Im a jet fan 100% no doubt, but put it this way... Farve is gonna need time to adapt to the new offence and its plays and Farve is 0-2 against chad...PLUS Ricky Williams should be playing so i say its not no walk in the park for the jets"

Thu, September 4, 2008 - 8:33pm ET"Everybody enjoy the game and GO JETS!!!!"
Pete Said:
Thu, September 4, 2008 - 10:46pm ET"If we can score first and establish the run it's over. I'd like nothing more than to see Chad put up 30 passes. My nightmare is Ricky Williams embarrassaing us for 175. I hope this years defense has some attitude. We can put a safety in the box on every down next week and force Chad to throw. I want Revis to kick off the season with 2 picks! Gholston gets his first NFL sack and strips Chad!"
Stephen Gregory Said:

Thu, September 4, 2008 - 11:05pm ET"This season will ride on weather D'BRICK or Woody can hold the line in check Favre will need all the time in the world to do what he does best.if Harris and Pace can take care of business then Revis and Rhodes will take care of the rest.we need a play maker though and Keller should be the man.Chad will do better with a new o coordinator if not we and every other team knows what hes gonna do."

The Jets should control this game from start to finish anything less would be uncivilized! The defense is going to put flipper where she belongs! IN A CAN OF TUNA! J!-E!-T!-S! JETS JETS JETS"
uncle joe Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 6:35am ET"Ricky Williams, just put 8 Men in the box.We are playing Chad remember.Cover anything under 20 yards. If he throws a bomb the DBs have plenty of time to draw straws to see whos turn it is to go intercept it."
Drew Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 8:01am ET"Let Ricky run the ball. Everyone's forgetting this is not the same R Williams from 5 years ago. The guy has played like 2 games in the last 3 years. I would be more worried if they had a healthy R Brown.....which they dont. Chad will keep it close enough for them to feel good about themselves. We pour it on late and pull out a pretty easy win down in Miami........Go Jets!!!!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 8:03am ET"This game week 1 is a must win game if the Jets lose we than play the Pats than at San Diego we could be 0 & 3 & the season will be over before it started if we are to be a contender we have to crush teams like Miami we should beat them by 2 TD'S "
jayndsun Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 8:09am ET"I'll be at the game section 133! Wearing my throwback #88 Al Toon jersey! it will be close then we will CRUSH THEM! I love Chad BUT I want us to CRUSH him on Sunday"
Charles F Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 8:25am ET"I'm not going to play the arrogant fan who is going to tell you were gonna destroy Miami. I'm not going to jinx team and say were going to win. I'm expecting big thing this year. I just hope the Jets got rid of the fine away to lose syndrome. WIn Win Win this year guys please don't let your fans down. D Fense needs to own this year and play like crazed jackals trying to eat up the QB.Gangreen4life"
Dunnie Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 8:42am ET"Hey Frank !! I totally agree with you. We should stomp the Fins ... else we are really pretenders. We cannot afford to lose this game ... Pats and Bolts next. Also ... I love your ranch dude ... amazing !!!! I really want to see Mangini/Sutton lets the dogs loose on D. I want Gholston to show his talent for once!! Look for Harriss to dominate."
poobah Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 9:39am ET"uncle joe that was hysterical. not a big chad fan i guess. i hope we're all still happy after sunday. we're looking good and i'm full of hope but i've been a fan for 40 years and i hope the 'find a way to lose team' is off on sunday."
Frank Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 10:15am ET"Thanks Dunnie I appreciate it. I think if Gholston gives us anything this week it will be a bonus. I really think Mangini needs to take a step back with the kid and use him as a situational pass rusher and that's it for now. He is clearly overwhelmed and needs to focus on the strength of his game and slowly add other OLB responsibilities each game going forward. Keep him practicing and study hard."
Dan Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 10:23am ET"What's the word on Thomas Jones this year? I picked him up thinking he's going to have a great season now that defenses will have to focus on Brett but am afraid he won't get in the end zone much. Hes proven that he can record plenty of yards."
russ Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 10:26am ET"1 game at a time...win or lose...champions play it 1 game at a time...."
Larry Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 10:31am ET"Some of you guys kill me. The thing that will keep it close is CHAD? The only people that know his limitations better than every other team is our own coordinators. Play him like every team played us. Like bringing in the outfield in a baseball game. J-E-T-S put the Dolphins in aTuna net!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
steve Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 11:05am ET"Wisconsin is rooting for the Jets everyweek!!! were selling Jets shirts like crazy here in the cheesestate!!! Go Jets!!"
Ken Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 11:10am ET"People! I hope you realize this Miami game is NOT going to be easy. The JETS will have to deal with the Miami HEAT & humidity, Ricky Williams running & Chad's play faking. But most importantly CHAD knows the Jets offensive and defensive plays & weakness. And please give Gholston a brake. Gholston just got here! This is the kids 1st season. Of course he is going to struggle. Everybody does. "
sonny Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 11:24am ET"I was never a Pennington fan and feel he's the most overrated quarterback in the NFL. Thank goodness we no longer have to look at those dying quail passes that are pickoff and run back for TD's (I can recall this trend starting in preseason last season and continued throughout the 1/2 season he played). With that said let's (not literally) knock his block off and start the season with a laugher."
uncle joe Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 11:47am ET"Thanks Poobah,I used to be a fan of Chads until I realized the only time he plays good is right before he gets an injury. The man is done.Ricky will be welcomed back to the NFL by a 350 pound monster,Hitman Harris and GQ at safety.Ted Ginn is like S.Moss when we had him,USELESS thats why we traded him Chad couldnt reach him.Miami will get 3 fieldgoals at best. You know him in the REDZONE."
Moshe Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 1:25pm ET"That's true Zippy. My optemism should a bit more cautious."
Moshe Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 1:30pm ET"I said I'm going to be cautious -but Zippy- look how many people agree with me: Larry, Dunnie, EYEH8DADOLPHINSTOO, etc."
Drew Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 1:35pm ET"Larry?? Have you watched a Jet game since Chad has been the QB?? He knows how to manage a game. Even with his limitations he was able to keep us in games. Even last year when he was awful. Any Jet or Jet fan would be foolish to discount what he can bring to a game. If they were playing either of their young QB's this game would be an aboslute blowout. Chad gives them a "chance" to compete."
Drew Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 1:40pm ET"Plus Larry, He knows every defensive call we have run in 3 years. You dont think that gives him a small advantage?? Not to mention he is without question a smart QB. Here's the deal the Jets will win but Chad will have the respect of the Miami locker room when the game's over. They will have no business staying with us and if they do Chad will have somehting to do with it."
Ira Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 1:42pm ET"So driving down here and listening to 790 the ticket they give the Jets no respect and think thr Dolphins have the edge in this game. Boy for a 1-15 team from last year they sure are talking some smack. The jets will take care of business and come home with the win. GO JETS!!!!"
Drew Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 1:44pm ET"Excellent point Uncle Joe.....I made the same exact point to a Dolphin fan this morning. He was ranting how great Ginn was going to be this year. He does not get that we had a few guys with speed that Chad could not utilize...especially S Moss. It's also funny how much respect the Phins fans have given Chad since they picked him up. They used to kill this guy about his arm."
wayner Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 1:52pm ET"What is this about managing the game....The object is to win and to win you must score more points than your opponent....Chad can throw a ton of 5 yard passes, pile up the first down go on a 8 minute drive, score 3 points. Next thing you know, we're down 7-3. Forget about managing the game....THERE'S A REASON WHY THEY KEEP SCORE...."
wayner Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 2:03pm ET"If Chad can read defenses so well, why was he baited so often into dumb throws. Rookie CBs were taking advantage of him last year. Stop the propaganda about his brilliance...When he came out , I thought he was the 2nd coming of Peyton. He never showed superior football intelligence He can make the 5yd pass consistently, but who can't ...Above average man. very average QB"
Ken Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 2:26pm ET"IRA, what do you do for a living? Are you retired? How do you have enough money to travel and attend all of these games? Are you rich? And how do you always seem to be the first CALLER on the sports radio talk shows? How do you do all this guy????"
Alan Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 3:34pm ET"Tell me about it Ira, i live down here and everyone thinks the Phins are going to win come on, Ive said it so many times, they lost Chambers and Booker, they lost Thomas and Taylor, while we gained Calvin Pace, Faneca, Woody, Jenkins, Keller, Gholston, Richardson, i mean come on they lost players while we gained think about its Common Scense 2 more days!!!!"
Larry Said:
Fri, September 5, 2008 - 5:40pm ET"Drew??? Ive watched EVERY Jets game for the last 38 years. You dont think our D knows every move HES going to make? Keeping us in games did what? Squat thats what. 1 yr deep in the playoffs, Vinnie brought us farther. This kind of loyalty to a QB we no longer have is disturbing. JETS 27-10 2 INT 3 QB sacks. "
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 7:43am ET"Ken, Ira works he takes all his vacation time traveling to see the Jets & he gets thru to all of the talk shows because if you or I called we would be on hold for 15 to 30 mins. most guys cant wait and hang up when Ira calls they put him right thru "
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 9:35am ET"Drew, you could not be more wrong Chad is the reason we did not win alot of games Curtis Martin put us in games with his running & our D kept it close teams would stack the run & still would not be able to stop Martin. Curtis made Chad look good but he never was he will not keep Miami in this game if Miami is in the game it we be because of running & D Chads job is to manage the game & not turn "
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 9:40am ET"the ball over which he can no longer do for Chad to be okay & I stress OKAY you need a dominate running game & D if the Jets do not beat Miami by at least 10 points it is because they are running on us & we can not stop them & there D is stopping our O it will have NOTHING TO DO WITH CHAD AT ALL WHAT IS HE GOING TO GO OUT & THROW FOR 300 YARDS FOR THE 1ST TIME IN HIS CAREER PLEASE !"
Roddy Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 11:51am ET"The Dolphins are going to win this one. Favre is going to force things and self-destruct trying to do too much. "
Drew Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 12:52pm ET"Spicer/Larry...Let me make myself perfectly clear so you two can understand. I am glad Chad is off the team. I was calling for KC early last year. Chad was not the same QB that "took" us to the playoffs in 2006.No Curtis in 06 genius!! We had no talent on offense in 06 and his game management and knowledge got us to 10-6 and the playoffs. Is that great?? No, but he has a winning record as a starter"
Drew Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 12:59pm ET"Plus....I want the the Jets to blow Miami out by 40 more than anyone but my point was Chad gives Miami a better chance than the 2 young QB's that are behind him. If neither of you undertsand that than I dont care if you have been watching games for 100 years you should call it quits today....Tom if 300 yrd games are important why did Parcells sign Chad to 2 yr deal 1 hour after we released him?"
Row Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 4:50pm ET"I don't want to be a downer guys, but we are not going to blow out the Dolphins. Schottenheimer will not attempt to run the ball, it's not in his game plan. We will drop back 40 times, and get Favre killed while winning an ugly game. Our defense will look worse then it is because the game will last longer when we don't run the ball. TJ rushed for 1100 last year, cut him some slack! "
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 5:37pm ET"Drew 4 things took us to the playoffs in 06 1 good D after the bye we had 1 of the top D's in the game 2 easy schedule cause we stunk the year before 3 special teams we were one of the best teams in the game Justin Miller made the pro bowl 4 suprise schotty was a 1st time OC & no one knew what we were going to do so his trick plays worked. Parcells signed Chad cause he is a Parcells guy & who can"
Larry Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 5:48pm ET"Drew. Youre not talking to imbeciles or children. I under stood what you were saying the first time. In my opinion youre wrong. Pennington was, is and always will be a slightly better than mediocre QB at best. As for the fish being better off with him than their youngsters, that remains to be seen. We werent. As for Parcells, ask him why he wanted him. A great coach but hes been wrong before. ."
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 5:51pm ET"teach Henne how a pro player is supposed to act he will be holding a clip board as soon as Miami is out of the playoff hunt Henne is there guy. No talent on O in 06 okay coles, cotch, baker, brick, kendell, mangold, moore & leon 8 out of our 11 starters with TALENT ! 6 of which still start for us now leon will play such a big roll for us you can pretty much say 7. So again Drew you are wrong ! "
DOLFAN1 Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 5:59pm ET"WE WILL WELCOME THE JETS AND JET FANS TO MIAMI SUNDAY. JETS FANS ARE AWARE OF THEIR PREVIOUS RECORD AGAINST MIAMI BUT WHAT YOU DONT KNOW IS BRETT HASN'T BEEN SO BLESSED AGAINST MIAMI. HEY BRETT! YOU KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING BOUT :) THATS ENOUGH ABOUT THE PAST. THE FUTURE OF MIAMI IS NOW. WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE SUNDAY AFTER 4PM, DONT FEEL BAD BECAUSE WE ARE GONG TO TO THE SAME TO EVERY TEAM"
Drew Said:
Sat, September 6, 2008 - 10:52pm ET"Spicer your reasoning why the Jets made the playoffs in in 06 is ridiculous. For offensive talent you named 4 OL?? Just give Chad a little credit and move on here. He mastered Schotty's awful offensive plan and made the playoffs with "zero" running game, 3 young OL (2 rookies) an unproven WR in Cotch (thanks to Herm not playing him. the only playmaker was Coles. Enough of your nonsense...Go Jets!"
