File Under: Jesse Chatman, violation, policy on steroids
08/30 — The NFL just released this statement on RB Jesse Chatman through a league spokesperson:
"Jesse Chatman of the New York Jets has been suspended without pay for the team’s first four regular-season games of 2008 for violating the NFL Policy on Steroids and Related Substances.
"Chatman's suspension begins on Saturday, August 30. He is eligible to return to the Jets’ active roster on Monday, September 29 following the team’s September 28 game against the Arizona Cardinals."
We'll have all the Jets' 22 final cuts/player moves and more on Chatman's situation during and following head coach Eric Mangini's conference call with beat reporters, which is set to begin shortly.

Nick Said:
Sat, August 30, 2008 - 7:07pm ET"Now we maybe know why Chatman has been so good in preseason? I am stunned, and very disappointed, gobsmacked is also a good word!"

Sat, August 30, 2008 - 9:32pm ET"i think on top of the suspension they should suspend him without pay as well. i think the league is responding better to situations such as this and they should do it again without making the organization pay an "employee" that cannot follow simple rules like umm........ no steroids!!!!!!!!"

Sat, August 30, 2008 - 9:34pm ET"Can't believe this crap about J.Chatman. I'm surprised they didn't cut him for that. Give another guy a chance like J.Caulcrick or M.Smith. Jets should look into R.Johnson. You guys here about C.Johnson? Mr. Ocho Cinco. LOL that guy is something else. "

Sun, August 31, 2008 - 6:38am ET"Details on Chatman are that he tested postitive for a diuretic in his system which can be used to mask steroids and not for steroids themselves. This could also have been used to reduce weight. This also happened at the end of last year. I think if he tested positive for steroids Mangini would have cut him. "

Sun, August 31, 2008 - 9:33am ET"Hey Randy, I just wanted to thank you for all of your hard work, great articles, and prompt reply's to all of our questions. Hearing this about Chatman is a little disappointing considering how well he's been doing in Pre Season. Do you think that we'll release him and possibly go after Rudi Johnson? I heard Rudi was cut by the Bengals. Go Jets!!!!"
Randy Lange Said:
"Thanks, Nic. As Coach Mangini said when asked if Jesse Chatman has a roster spot once his suspension is lifted, "Yes, he does.""

Sun, August 31, 2008 - 3:10pm ET"Hey Randy I want to echo Nic and say thank you for all your efforts. If you dont mind can you please explain how the practice squad vs. regular roster works? for example when Chatman comes back and (hopefully) is on the 53 man roster can the Jets place Ainge on the p. squad or will they have to release someone? thank"
Randy Lange Said:
"Thanx, ROBOX. Only players who have cleared waivers or are free agents can be signed to practice squads, even in-season. If and when Chatman returns to the 53-man roster, if the Jets are at 53 at that time, someone will have to be released or placed on IR."
Row Said:
Sun, August 31, 2008 - 5:43pm ET"I liked Chatman, and thought it was a good signing, although Rhodes would have been a better fit, but is once again on the Colts. I wish Chatman the best of luck! I don't see him wearing Jet green though. "

Maybe I'm just alot older than you, but if you think the guys of Namath's era or before did anything on the same level as steroids or the like, you got your head up your behind! But anything from the 80's on, I wouldn't be surprised by anyone being linked to them. I would hope not, but I wouldn't be shocked."
Hogan Said:
Mon, September 1, 2008 - 10:22am ET"Ray, that is exactly waht I meant. No not as far back as Namath and them."

Steve Said:
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 4:07pm ET"Anybody caught using steriods or HGH needs to be permanently banned for life from playing professional anything. If this guy is this stupid, then he can get himself hurt playing so the NFL has an obligation to ban him. If the NFL doesn't put there foot down then open it up for all the players to use whatever they want. What fun it would be to see a game then, huh? Man could you imagine.... "
