C.J. Sure Chad Wants Opener 'Very, Very Bad'

08/29 — C.J. Mosley had another decent preseason showing in Philadelphia. The D-lineman was credited with a late pass defense at the line, played an early screen pass perfectly for another incompletion, and chased A.J. Feeley out of the pocket and forcing the Eagles' third QB to unload a pass that was picked off by Abram Elam.
"You just want to get in the game and make a play any chance you get," said Mosley, who a year earlier had those three sacks of Feeley. "I was a little nervous early, but you just kind of get used to things. Your blood flows, your heart starts pumping, and you play like you know how to play."
If that's how he feels for the fourth preseason game of summer, how will he feel for the opener at Miami? In a lot of ways, he said he'll feel like his friend of the previous several seasons will feel at the Dolphins' offensive controls.
"I would be a bad friend if I said yeah," he said when asked if he would try to put a hurtin' on Chad Pennington. "But my job is my job and his job is his job. His job is to make us look as bad as possible. My job is to say hello to my old friend ... as much as I can."
Pennington left the Jets the day after Brett Favre arrived in trade from the Packers, and one of the messages he imparted was that he wasn't looking for an AFC East landing spot so he could face the Jets twice.
"I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I have no feelings like that whatsoever," Chad said then. "If something happens with the Miami Dolphins, it would be because I feel good about the situation and good about the opportunity. It won't have anything to do with the New York Jets or me trying to prove a point."
As it turned out, something did happen with the Dolphins, and Mosley thinks Pennington will feel just the way he did back in 2006.
"This'll be his first game at home, and he would love to beat us more than anything," Mosley said. "I know how that feels from when I got traded from Minnesota and we played them later that year.
"I'm pretty sure Chad is going to bring his 'A' game. ... He wants to beat us very, very bad. But we can't let that happen."
Strong Summer Showings
The Jets' preseason numbers, teamwise and individually, have tended not to be exciting, regardless of whether a playoff season was ahead or not. But this summer there were a number of performances that were noteworthy if for no other reason than that they gave an indication of what's ahead for the players who gave them.
Passing: It was all Brett ... Ratliff, that is. The first-year signalcaller from Utah blossomed like a sego lily (that's Utah's state flower ... sorry, Brett), starting with the opener at Cleveland. Ratty had the most attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns both in a game and for the preseason. His four TD passes (two to David Clowney, two to Paul Raymond) equaled the total thrown by Kellen Clemens in 2007, Ray Lucas in 2000, and Glenn Foley and Neil O'Donnell in 1998 for the most TD passes by a Jets QB in the last 15 preseasons.
Receiving: Clowney's 163 receiving yards at Cleveland were the most in a Jets preseason since at least 1992 and his 222 yards in 1½ games due to his shoulder injury were the most since Terance Mathis had 254 in '92. But the catch title went to RB Jesse Chatman, who had six receptions at Philadelphia and a team-leading nine for the summer.
Rushing: It was all Chatman, with Thursday's 29 carries the most in a preseason game since at least '92. Jesse had the most attempts and yards in a game and for the summer, and his TD at Philly was the Jets' only rushing score in four games.
Sacks: Cody Spencer finished up his good summer with a forceful PD of a Feeley-to-Bam Childress pass inside the 5 in the third quarter at Philly. Spencer's three sacks were a half-sack off the league leadership and were the most in the preseason by a Jets LB since at least 2001.
Fan-tastic Feature
ESPN.com has come out with its NFL extravaganza. A big part of the package is its fan features. ESPN profiled one fan from each of the 32 teams and the Jets rep is Ira Lieberfarb — yes, Ira from Staten Island and from the Radar. Congratulations, Ira. You look great in your dress whites (with green No. 12, of course).
The Website also ranks the 32 fan bases. I won't spoil it for you (too much) but I'll give you a hint about the Green & White fandom: You're not in top 10 ... but you're also not in the bottom 10.
One final note on the ESPN production. In their SportsNation PollCenter, they offer five questions for each team, and the top question for the Jets is: Will Brett Favre play at a Pro Bowl level? At the moment, the 5,347 voters say Favre will play at that level by a 68 percent to 32 percent margin.
In fact, if you go to their electorate map, you'll find that a majority in only four of the 50 states feel Favre will not play at a PB level. The largest margin against? Massachusetts at 67-33. Hmmm...

I really like his motor and overall presence on the field, If Ellis isnt ready we know that CJ should be able to step in nicely. As for next Sunday, CP will do everything in his power to show his old team up, thats human nature so lets do what all other teams did to us previously... 7-8 men in the box. JETS"

Fri, August 29, 2008 - 5:27pm ET"Chad plays hard anytime he steps on the gridiron. He[Chad] wants to win this game aswell as everygame he plays in. The only difference this time is he's playing a team he thought he was gonna be the leader of this season. My prediction Dolphins 24 - Jets 17 but on the contrary the Jets should win the final game of the season. The freezing cold Meadowlands will ail the Miami-bound Dolphins."
Ira Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 5:31pm ET"Trading Bollinger to the Vikings and getting CJ was a great move by Mr. T. I expect CJ to contribute a lot this year. I still consider Favre one of the top 5 QB's in the league and would expect him to play at a Pro Bowl level this year and hope next year too. I think the 1st month wil be an adjustment period but i think Schotty is smart enough to keep things simple for him. "

Fri, August 29, 2008 - 7:19pm ET"Ira if last weeks game was an indication of Mangini's intentions on offense we might be in trouble. All the false starts and the nullification of the Favre TD pass to JC was a result of the ridiculous shifting nonsense that they try to employ. Mangini and Co are guilty of over managing the players and out thinking themselves. With Favre and the talent we have they need to line up and play football"
Frank Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 7:25pm ET"The team under performed last year because of poor coaching and personel decisions this week with the cuts and with the Miami game will tell a lot about what they have learned if anything. They need to turn Favre lose and play aggressive defense if they do neither we are in for a long season. Interesting the 2 players I said they needed to trade Coles and Ellis did nothing and aren't ready."
Howard Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 7:38pm ET"im certain cp would love to play the jets but remember when mangini came here he gave chad the pats books against him,im sure coach still knows ways to beat chad from his pats days, but if we dont put 8 or 9 in the box and dare chad to beat us long it couls be a long day.......GO JETS"
Don Jemo Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 7:39pm ET"For some reason, I fear the Dolphins more now with Chad at the helm. I think we can win this one, but I don't see it being easy. Chad will be playing hard - but hey, no Jet-hating Jason Taylor for Brick to lose sleep over."
Wayne r. Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 7:57pm ET"Chad can't carry a team and he certainly can't carry a 1-15 team. It will be close for a little while 24-10 Jets. Remember the Defense know a little about Chad too. By the Ira, you're only 6 years older than me. Man you look old. Serve you right for being a Jet fan."
Daniel Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 8:57pm ET"I have been impressed with our QB play. Will we keep Ainge? Practice Squad? If we had a chance to get a first round pick, would you trade Ratliff? Wow, not used to having that problem!!! Alot of weapons on O. Run game concerns me though. D has great potential...I hope we attack more though..its only preseason but we seemed to be in a prevent defense all too often. Why is Sutton still here? "
Ira Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 9:55pm ET"Frank, Elllis is a pros pro. He has been around long enough and will be ready to go week #1. LC why risk him tweaking his hamstring in a meaningless preseason game. Once again LC will be ready for the Fish and he has owned them his entire career. LC gets at least 4 catches next week and 1 TD. GO JETS!!!!"
Wayne Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 9:59pm ET"I'm a lifelong Jets fan that now lives in S Florida. Ricky William's is running like the Ricky of old & Pennington has looked very sharp. We need to play smash mouth football, 8 men in the box & blitz CP early to rattle him. Open it up on offense & throw it deep to open up the running game. We have so many legitimate threats. LC, JC, Kellen, Henry, Clowney (if avail), Bubba. Pass to open the run."
Jimmer Said:
Fri, August 29, 2008 - 11:45pm ET"I thought Chad was a better QB than KC, but, if anyone knows his shortfalls, it's us. Screens, outs and hooks count for 75% of what chad throws. The only thing that scares me is the poor run-D from preseason. If Ricky Williams brings his "A" game and we play run as poorly as we have, Chad just might get us. If we can shut down the run without playing 8-9 in the box, we should have Miami easily. "

The Jets organization made the best moves of any team in the off season and I believe they are ready to put a tremendous team out on the field come Sunday. It's the preseason, there's going to be mistakes and penalties, this is the time to try things out and see how they work. We still managed to win 3 out of 4 gamss. J-E-T-S, JETS!!!"

Huh...Way to go Tangini not only did Chatman play well behind an atrocious O-Line he looked faster running the ball and certainly better catching the ball than "TJ" Barlow. He also did well on blitz pickups. I wasn't suggesting a starting role but certainly #3 in the backfield. We have no depth at RB gonna bring someone else in who doesn't know the system???"

Sat, August 30, 2008 - 3:35pm ET"Ira you are missing the point we have plenty of young talented guys on the roster to replace both without any dropoff. Parcells and little Bill have a knack of trading guys right before they're finished and get good draft picks for them. Tangini has not shown the ability to make these calls correctly instead they wait until there is no value and get nothing. I hope the Chatman rumor is false."

Thanks for doing all of us Jet fans proud."

Sat, August 30, 2008 - 5:11pm ET"I dont care all that much about Chatman. I know he ran well against a bunch of 3rd stringers but if we can get some O-line depth in a trade than great. If he stays he will be a nice 3rd RB. ....KC traded?? It would make sense though. He is in the last year of his contract. I cannot believe the craziness going on today. Get us some O-line and secondary help Mr T."
MikeMc Said:
Sat, August 30, 2008 - 5:45pm ET"Jet80 you may be right, keep in mind Chad played in this Henning system so he is further along than Brett. If we don't put substantial pressure on him he will find the open guy. We need to stop their run , limit penalties& get a lead that forces Chad into uncomfortable situations, thats when the INT's happen. Lets not rile up the dolphin faithful. The fins are an enigma right now,as are we."
MikeMc Said:
Sun, August 31, 2008 - 12:50pm ET"FRANK- you really need to cool it on your criticism of mgmt. your constant disrespect makes me think its personal. Did Tangini write you a bad check , or cut a family member from the roster? Yes there have been bad moves and some questionable ones also, but there have been good ones too!! I'm begging you pls give them 3/4's of the season & if the results are poor I'll join your criticism club."
