08/23 — The first quarter of this 40th annual Jets-Giants preseason game was memorable not because of any throws by Brett Favre or Eli Manning but by the Jets' first sacks of the year by their starting defense.
Calvin Pace made his nicest move yet as a Jet on the Giants' opening drive to the Jets 33. Pace, who had a career-high 6.5 sacks for the Cardinals last year, showed his fluidity by hand-fighting with and then spinning off of Giants starting LT David Diehl and then closing the distance to QB Eli Manning, trying to escape to his right.
It was only a 2-yard sack, but it was the Jets' first QB takedown of the first half in their third preseason game, and it helped stall the Giants and force a punt.
On Big Blue's next series, the Green & White kept coming. This time LB David Harris, after a one-beat delay, took off from his inside perch — something he did expertly in the second half of last season in accumulating five sacks. The Giants' center and left guard went different directions, and RB Brandon Jacobs blew the blitz pickup as Harris roared down Paterson Plank Road for the 10-yard sack, which helped set up another Giants punt in a defensive-flavored first half.
Finally, in the last minute of the first half, Pace fought past Diehl again for a huge sack of Manning on third-and-goal from the Jets 8, forcing the Giants to try to break the tie not on a TD or a 26-yard field goal by Josh Huston (in for the injured Lawrence Tynes) but rather a 42-yard FG by Huston. His kick faded wide right.
And so, after Favre's kneeldown with seven seconds left to end the half, the Jets and Giants took a 0-0 tie into their locker rooms.
Here are the Jets' sacks by quarters so far this preseason, through halftime of tonight's game:
| Game | 1st Q | 2nd Q | 3rd Q | 4th Q |
| at Cleveland | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
| vs. Washington | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
| vs. Giants | 2 | 1 | ... | ... |
As far as Favre goes, even though his four first-half possessions produced no points, it was almost a superb half, had his 49-yard TD strike to Jerricho Cotchery with 3:52 to play in the half had stood.
TE Bubba Franks stepped away from the line and went in half-motion as Favre took the snap and looked left, looked left ... then unleashed a laser strike for Cotchery, who had beaten CB Kevin Dockery down the right sideline.
But the call by referee Jerome Boger's crew was an illegal formation. This is one of those calls in which the player flagged is not the guilty party. When Franks stepped back to go in motion, the WR on the far left, who I believe was Brad Smith, needed to step up to cover the LT and make the formation legal again.
But no matter whom the penalty was on, the Jets lost a great opportunity to break the scoreless tie in this defensive struggle.
Even without the 49-yard TD pass, Favre's first-half passing line was good: 9-for-12 for 96 yards, good for a 97.9 passer rating. The big beneficiary of No. 4's passing was, in fact, B.Smith, who had two receptions for 37 yards and would've had a third, off of an amazing one-handed grab for 29 yards, wiped out by an illegal shift.

Defense looks much better than I expected, Jenkins looks really good. Lowery should start on opening day (picks from Penny) and I still want Elam for run support. Not impressed with Smith so far."

Sat, August 23, 2008 - 8:32pm ET"What about rush defense? Is this year going to be the same as last few years? The rush defense wakes up when season is almost over. Why is Bob Sutton escaping scrutiny/accountabilty?"

Sat, August 23, 2008 - 8:44pm ET"Randy, the defense was awesome in the first half & Favre did a great job as usual but where is the run game. TJ is invisible as is LW. I'm not sure why the run game is struggling so badly. I know the G men have a great D too but we should be able to manage more than 2 yds per carry. I'm watching CP & he's lighting it up in Miami. Looks like a different guy. He even had a nice run for a 1st down"

Pace...the TRUTH Elam & Lowery needs to start, if not lowery then Poteat. If you look at the 2nd & 3rd string offense plays, be ready to see them used by Favre."

Sat, August 23, 2008 - 10:19pm ET"Pace looks really good. Lots of penalties on the o-line. TJ just like last year can't gain any yardage. It is the runblocking or the runner? Hope Clowney comes back soon. He is our only burner. Did Miller get hurt?"
JP Said:
Sat, August 23, 2008 - 10:50pm ET"Good game - liked Brett playing hard even after the sacks - looked sharp. We should have been up at the half except for the stupid penalties. However, I hope that TJ can get the running going. I might have to agree with Buttle who said when Leon Wash is on the field, the defenses back off thinking there might be a pass or reverse, but when TJ is on the field, it is run all the way."

Sat, August 23, 2008 - 10:52pm ET"Pace, Jenkins were awesome - liked some of the stops they had on Jacobs. Overall in the first half, against the SB champs and a super D-fense, Jets easily could have been up 14-0 with no penalities. We just have to get the running game going. Kudos to Lowery as well."

Sun, August 24, 2008 - 8:29am ET"Great Win!!! Calvin Pace will be to the Jets what Reggie White was to the Pack. Always liked Bubba Franks as a Packer-glad he is again playing with Brett. Good Job to the Jets managers, too bad we can't say the same for the Packers managers--they all need to get fired. I can feel the playoffs coming for the Jets, things are coming together in a great way!!!! Go JETS!!!!!!"
CD Said:
Sun, August 24, 2008 - 10:39am ET"Some people may ask how a hard core packer fan could suddenly switch loyalties to another team. Well, it's not easy to watch the Packers without Farve, in fact it's down right sickening. Just cannot do it. Very excited about how the Jets are progressing with Farve. Looking forward to learning all about the players. I can feel their enthusiasm for the upcoming season. Let's Go JETS!"

Sun, August 24, 2008 - 11:50am ET"I like the fire on the D line, it was fun to watch. I do want to say that I'm once again worried about the O. Our Offense, even with Brett Favre couldn't score a TD. I am not impressed with the way Schottenheimer has run the O. We need holes to run the ball. I sure don't want to let Brett throw 40 times a game, so let's get it together. Is Coles still on the team? "

If you see something as wrong, then it is up to you to do what you think is right. For me, right is sticking with BF. You can do whatever you like, and by the way, I'm not anonymous like you, I'm marilyn."

Mon, August 25, 2008 - 3:53pm ET"Well Marilyn, you don't change your loyalties to your team if you are a real fan. The Packers are bigger then Favre, Thompson, etc, etc. I have respect for fans of opposing teams who have stuck with their team through thick and thin.....even if they are fans of teams I don't like. As a diehard Packer fan, I say good riddance."

As far the running game if Brett keeps firing the bombs then the lanes should open up for the surprise long run!"

Mon, August 25, 2008 - 5:38pm ET"Man those penalties killed big time. It would have been 14-0 or 10-0 at halftime if it wasn't for the penalties. The touchdown was taken away and the 1st and 10 inside the NYG 25 was taken away too from the same penalty! The defense was great though...we did very good in the first half when we were playing against the NYG starters"
