File Under: Wayne Chrebet, Kellen Clemens, David Clowney, Terance Mathis

08/16 — WR David Clowney is on his way to another impactful game when his night comes to a painful end.

Midway through the third quarter, Clowney, crossing from left to right, grabs Kellen Clemens' high but catchable ball for a 14-yard gain and a first down at the Redskins 25. But as he goes down, Redskins rookie cornerback Justin Tryon rolls over Clowney and DC doesn't bounce right up.

Clowney has a right shoulder injury and he's helped from the field and then goes to the locker room. He finishes with four receptions for 59 yards, both of which lead the Jets receivers through three quarters

Added to his eye-popping four-for-163-and-two-TDs Jets debut at Cleveland and Clowney has eight catches for 222 yards.

The yardage especially is significant: Clowney already has more receiving yards in two games than any Jets preseason leader had in the previous seven summers. Here are the most receiving yards by the Jets' preseason leaders since 1992 (*two games remaining in 2008 preseason):

 Year Receiver Recs Yds Avg
 1992 Terance Mathis 14 254 18.1
 2000 Wayne Chrebet 9 248 27.6
 1997 Jeff Graham 12 241 20.1
 2008 David Clowney* 8 222 27.8
 1998 Dedric Ward 12 221 18.4

We don't have any word on Clowney's condition. We'll let you know after head coach Eric Mangini's postgame news conference.

One other point worth making is regards the Jets' run defense. At times it looked good, especially with DE Kareem Brown in the second and third quarters and LB Kenwin Cummings in the second half. And if you take away Rock Cartwright's second-quarter burst off left guard for 73 yards, the 'Skins were held to 108 rushing yards.

But of course you can't remove Cartwright's run from the equation, and the Jets, who gave up 296 rushing yards to Washington with Clinton Portis in Game 9 last season, gave up 181 to the Redskins without Portis tonight.

Here are the preseason games in which the Jets have given up the most rushing yardage in the last 10 seasons. Interestingly, the top two figures both were yielded to Brett Favre's Packers at Lambeau Field (home team in CAPS):

Year Final Score Atts Yds TDs
 1999 GREEN BAY 27, Jets 16 26 200 0
 2000 GREEN BAY 37, Jets 24 36 196 1
 2008 Washington 13, JETS 10 22 181 0
 2006 TAMPA BAY 16, Jets 3 44 167 0
 2007 Minnesota 37, JETS 20 31 167 1

"I don't know if it's preseason or what, but where's the offense? Last time I checked we were in the bottom 5 of the league and one of the last in points last year. If we have so many weapons, why not DOMINATE! I haven't seen any Jets FIRE yet from anyone but Clowney, and Elam. I miss the Jets! I just don't like preseason. In Nuge's defense, I think he had a streak of 29 regular season field goals."

"Jim, as a long time Rutgers/JETS fan, I'd have to agree with you on Rankart. And Girault really is a talented ball hawk; and a Gem from what insiders tell me, but I don't think he'll start this year. He may need a year of learning from Rhodes and Smith. I also would like to see more from the D-Line. I know they're better than what we've seen thus far. Overall I think we'll be fine. J-E-T-S!"

And hes a red zone threat! did you see that catch he had in the endzone? is was a bad thrown ball and he still came down with it........too bad he couldn't get his feet in..........all im sayin is if we get him the ball more good things will happen"
