08/16 — WR David Clowney is on his way to another impactful game when his night comes to a painful end.
Midway through the third quarter, Clowney, crossing from left to right, grabs Kellen Clemens' high but catchable ball for a 14-yard gain and a first down at the Redskins 25. But as he goes down, Redskins rookie cornerback Justin Tryon rolls over Clowney and DC doesn't bounce right up.
Clowney has a right shoulder injury and he's helped from the field and then goes to the locker room. He finishes with four receptions for 59 yards, both of which lead the Jets receivers through three quarters
Added to his eye-popping four-for-163-and-two-TDs Jets debut at Cleveland and Clowney has eight catches for 222 yards.
The yardage especially is significant: Clowney already has more receiving yards in two games than any Jets preseason leader had in the previous seven summers. Here are the most receiving yards by the Jets' preseason leaders since 1992 (*two games remaining in 2008 preseason):
| Year | Receiver | Recs | Yds | Avg |
| 1992 | Terance Mathis | 14 | 254 | 18.1 |
| 2000 | Wayne Chrebet | 9 | 248 | 27.6 |
| 1997 | Jeff Graham | 12 | 241 | 20.1 |
| 2008 | David Clowney* | 8 | 222 | 27.8 |
| 1998 | Dedric Ward | 12 | 221 | 18.4 |
We don't have any word on Clowney's condition. We'll let you know after head coach Eric Mangini's postgame news conference.
One other point worth making is regards the Jets' run defense. At times it looked good, especially with DE Kareem Brown in the second and third quarters and LB Kenwin Cummings in the second half. And if you take away Rock Cartwright's second-quarter burst off left guard for 73 yards, the 'Skins were held to 108 rushing yards.
But of course you can't remove Cartwright's run from the equation, and the Jets, who gave up 296 rushing yards to Washington with Clinton Portis in Game 9 last season, gave up 181 to the Redskins without Portis tonight.
Here are the preseason games in which the Jets have given up the most rushing yardage in the last 10 seasons. Interestingly, the top two figures both were yielded to Brett Favre's Packers at Lambeau Field (home team in CAPS):
| Year | Final Score | Atts | Yds | TDs |
| 1999 | GREEN BAY 27, Jets 16 | 26 | 200 | 0 |
| 2000 | GREEN BAY 37, Jets 24 | 36 | 196 | 1 |
| 2008 | Washington 13, JETS 10 | 22 | 181 | 0 |
| 2006 | TAMPA BAY 16, Jets 3 | 44 | 167 | 0 |
| 2007 | Minnesota 37, JETS 20 | 31 | 167 | 1 |

Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:08pm EDT"What is wrong w/ Mangini? Kick a FG after Ratliff drives you down the field only to have a perfect pass dropped for the winning score. I don't understand? Can my fellow Jet fans explain Mangenius' call to go for a FG. And Nugent needs to be let go. I know it's only preseason but this guy has been aweful since we wasted a #2 pick on him. Missed 2 easy ones tonight. All he has to do is kick FG. "

What good is a tie, it''s playing not to lose. Please don't do that during regular season. Go for it and believe in the team like I do."

Wayne Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:17pm EDT"To continue. If I don't do my job, I get fired and Nugent hasn't done his job. The worst kicker in the league and keeping him on the team is major liabiltiy. We need a good kicker to make kicks, especially when the game is on the line. Someone out there let me know what your think. Also, move over KC, Ratliff has to be #2. Great poise, strong arm, smart & doesn't get rattled. KC looks terrible."
Wayne Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:21pm EDT"We should only carry QB's with the same Brett. Ratliff looks liked a seasoned pro. KC tripped 3 times but doesn;t have command of the offense like Ratliff. KC should be #3 and Ratliff #2."

Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:43pm EDT"favre was as expected, clemmens cant catch a break, dropped passes kept him from sustaining drives and finding a rhythm, tripping over the centers feet didnt help. Ratliff cathes every break, great touch, timing and accuracy, looking very impressive, to bad dropped pass didnt put game away."

Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:51pm EDT"Nugent has been known for these gaffs(43,23 tonight), shame we have no other kickers in camp. Ratty on the other hand should have been given the chance. This guy is really making me have hopes for the future. The last time I thought this way about a nobody player, he wore #80. I never seen anything special in Clemmons to begin with. Ratty seems to have the right touch/brains/arm combination."

Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:53pm EDT"def played well, except one long run(73yds) but they held them to 3 pts. Nugent has got to make those kicks no excuses ! he does well down the middle but struggles off to one side or the other, a dropped pass and a missed field goal equals one loss, doesnt hurt now, but will later."

Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:57pm EDT"Randy, Can't believe Clowney got hurt. Just have to hope for the best. Postives Gholston, Lowery, Spencer, Brown, Henry, Ratliff. Negatives Nugent, Ihedigbo should have not gone for the ball on the TD he gave up, Raymond's drop, and Kellen looked uncomfoftable even though they dropped 4 passes on him. Chatman was good. Miller played into the late part of the 3rd QT. Is he being showcased for a trade?"
Ira Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 11:03pm EDT"Favre looked good and nice to see Keller get his 1st TD. Bend but don't break D was good but giving up 181 yds rushing? If Clowney is going to miss time it now looks like Henry good replace him. He looked very good and reminded me of Keyshawn going over the middle. I thought Eric should have gone for the win instead of OT. It was a preseason game. No need to take a chance for another injury."

Sat, August 16, 2008 - 11:27pm EDT"I am so impressed with Ratliff. He will be our starter after Farve retires. He looks poised and has a much better pocket presence than Clemens. Like I said before keep Ratliff and Ainge and trade Clemens."

Sun, August 17, 2008 - 1:27am EDT"Ira I agree with you on Henry, he looked really good on that last drive. But I wasn't totally happy with VG out there. I realize he is still learning, but a couple times I would like to see a little more of a motor going. He was giving up a little easy on his pass rush at times and that is where he should be most dangerous. I think Mangini wanted to try one in the end zone and still get a kick"

Sun, August 17, 2008 - 9:01am EDT"How long are the Jets going to continue with WR's that simply cannot catch a PASS!! I counted 5 Drpped passes,,,,,last Game ,,,,,,,,,might want to look down the depth Chart for some one who can catch a pass!!!"

Sun, August 17, 2008 - 11:15am EDT"Radliff should be the #2 QB, I liked the pick of Clemens but have seen enough of him as a player, nugent has to get his head together or he may get released this season, FINALLY (THE JETS NEED CLOWNEY, HE IS AN IMPORTANT WEAPON FOR BOTH BRETT'S )"
Viveca Said:
Sun, August 17, 2008 - 1:01pm EDT"Our running game looks like a weakness. Thomas Jones is pedestrian at best. Chatman looks like a better choice. O-line is much improved, especially in pass blocking, but not so much in runblocking. Nugent is a liability!"

Sun, August 17, 2008 - 1:44pm EDT"Well the Jets scared a lot of NFL teams yesterday, looks like farve still has it, if he can be protected. good posts by many, I'll add that i called out nugent last year, he's inconsistant, feeley was released by miami, we need to bring in competition.Chatham is a beast and will start by the end of the year. Gholston better but still not up to the mark. Stop the drops, Clowney/Henry/Stuckey=exciti"

Mon, August 18, 2008 - 12:18am EDT"2008 JETS ROAD TO THE SUPERBOWL....jets has to do something with the safeties. I like Rhodes but he isnt an aggressive player. I like that Girault guy #43 from Rutgers he has a good chance of starting over the rest of the safeties. Gholston was a waste of money. Ratliff should get the second spot behind farve. LB #47 Rankhart Is playing really good so far and getting alot of PT,"

Mon, August 18, 2008 - 4:48am EDT"I don't know if it's preseason or what, but where's the offense? Last time I checked we were in the bottom 5 of the league and one of the last in points last year. If we have so many weapons, why not DOMINATE! I haven't seen any Jets FIRE yet from anyone but Clowney, and Elam. I miss the Jets! I just don't like preseason. In Nuge's defense, I think he had a streak of 29 regular season field goals."

Mon, August 18, 2008 - 9:11pm EDT"Jim, as a long time Rutgers/JETS fan, I'd have to agree with you on Rankart. And Girault really is a talented ball hawk; and a Gem from what insiders tell me, but I don't think he'll start this year. He may need a year of learning from Rhodes and Smith. I also would like to see more from the D-Line. I know they're better than what we've seen thus far. Overall I think we'll be fine. J-E-T-S!"

And hes a red zone threat! did you see that catch he had in the endzone? is was a bad thrown ball and he still came down with it........too bad he couldn't get his feet in..........all im sayin is if we get him the ball more good things will happen"
