08/13 — Brett Ratliff showed some late arm in today's late training camp practice.
On a cool August evening on Long Island, in front of a strong crowd of more than 5,000, the first-year QB from Utah got ready for the two-minute drills to end practice by launching a deep ball during situation drills to rookie WR Marcus Henry, who made perhaps his biggest reception of camp for a 40-yard gain against DB Rudy Burgess.
Then came the two-minute conditions: offense trailing, 31-23, 1:44 left, no timeouts, deep in their own territory (minus-12). Brett Favre could get only to his 43 before throwing a fourth-and-2 pass over the middle for Chansi Stuckey that Drew Coleman swatted down with a diving PD.
Enter the Rat.
Ratliff completed six of nine for 49 yards and mixed in a 16-yard scramble to set up the do-or-die scenario: fourth down at the plus-18, four seconds left. The QB scrambled to his right, where he was chased by hard-charging LB Marques Murrell. He doubled back to his left, got his body set and fired a pass that Wallace Wright snared in the back of the end zone with no time left.
Unfortunately for the offense, it also needed the two-point conversion to send this game to "OT." Ratliff tried to sling it to David Clowney, who couldn't hold it in the end zone. So the tobacconist's phrase comes to mind: Close but no cigar.
The players spent the last hour of practice slightly less burdened than they had the first hour when they removed their shoulder pads and replaced them with their "toilet seats," the thin protective pads with a particular shape. But it wasn't an easygoing final hour, at least not for the third offensive unit.
QB Erik Ainge put the center snap on the ground and for that plus no doubt for other indiscretions, head coach Eric Mangini had that entire unit take the penalty lap together around turf practice field.
Then as they finished the lap, Mangini spun his outstretched hand and pointed index finger over his head. He wasn't signaling a home run. The unit continued to run a "big lap" around the grass field as well.
A few other highlights:
■ Stuckey made an eye-opening backhand grab of a Favre out pass and turned upfield on CB Ahmad Carroll for a TD in early team drills.
■ Jesse Chatman showed some quicks as he took a handoff from Ainge and zipped off for a long run.
■ Kellen Clemens threw a quick pass over the middle to Clowney but the ball deflected off his hands to Murrell, who came up with the pick.
■ Leon Washington took a handoff off his right side, appeared to have been "tackled," but kept on running. Suddenly it was a smiling but serious footrace among Washington, Kerry Rhodes and Carroll. Rhodes finally grabbed a handful of Leon's jersey inside the 10.
■ Mike Nugent, with a wind to his back, got off some booming midpractice kicks. He hit his first five field goals before missing from 46 and 49 kicking toward the Arena League posts. Then he put five kickoffs from his 30 to the backline of the opposing end zone.
DE Shaun Ellis and LB Jason Trusnik were joined for sideline work by WR Laveranues Coles.
The late practice unofficially ran 2 hours, 18 minutes, the longest of camp. Thursday the Jets hold their last practice of the week, an afternoon affair (1:30 p.m. stretching), then take Friday to prepare for their preseason home opener against the Washington Redskins.

"Ira, he worked a decent amount with the ones."

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 9:05pm ET"Randy - I'm a little confused. If the score was 31-28 with Favre's offense trailing when Ratliff entered the game, howcome Ratliff needed the 2-point conversion to take it into OT? Wouldn't the score have been 38-28 with Ratliff's TD or am I missing something here? Otherwise, awesome reporting. It's great having someone like yourself for us West Coasters to rely on. Got Jets!"
Randy Lange Said:
"John G, my mistake. The offense trailed, 31-23, in both two-minute drives. I'm correcting the story now."

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 9:17pm ET"Hey randy i was just wondering if you had any inside scoop on if the jets will keep ratliff or not. I think this kid is a contender for the back up position over klemens as far as i can see.also love to read your radar keep up the great work."
Randy Lange Said:
"Sorry, walter, no inside scoop, but he's been looking pretty good this summer, hasn't he?"
Vince Said:
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 10:01pm ET"Hi Randy. I have always enjoyed your column and of course the blogs from other fans. My question, seeing how the Jets prospects have changed so dramatically for the better, just as Brett Ratliff received no snaps last year, did the South Seas guy, Marques Tuiasasoapo, also get no snaps? Did he even get a proper "look?" Both had superior arms, I note. Thanks in Advance."
Ajay Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 12:19am ET"Hey Randy, Ratliff a "first-year" QB? "
Randy Lange Said:
"That's correct, Ajay. Even though he was here last season, he didn't play and doesn't get a year of service. By NFL definition, "Players ... who have NFL experience, including either preseason training camp or being on an Active List or Inactive List, or on Reserve/Injured or Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform for fewer than six regular-season games, are termed NFL First-Year Players.""

Thu, August 14, 2008 - 12:38am ET"randy, you said "stretching" for tomorrows practice. does this mean a light practice? just wanted to know because i was going to come out and watch. "
Randy Lange Said:
"aaron, the practice begins with stretching before practice gets into full swing. Today's practice will probably be a normal practice, although that is always up to the discretion of the head coach."
michael perosi Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 6:18am ET"Randy, why did the Jets not keep pennington, have him compete for the starting job with Brett....whoever wins , we would have had a great one- two punch at QB.....they should have traded Clemens...moved Ratliff up to 3rd string and had either Chad or Brett start....your thoughts? "
Randy Lange Said:
"michael, my thought is that no team in the salary-cap era of the NFL can afford to have that much money tied up at the quarterback position."
Ira Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 6:57am ET"Its still a little early but maybe Mr. T has finally hit on one of these players that he brings in and gives them a shot at making it again in the NFL. Carroll seems to have started to open some eyes and i would be surprised if he doesn't make the team. After being drafted in the 1st rd pick #25 by Green Bay he played with them from 04-06, Jags 06 and Predators in 08 he could get back on track now"
Row Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 6:59am ET"Henry was a pick that just couldn't have filled the need. Hardy turned out to be a pretty good pick for the Bills. Let's see how DJ and Hardy do this year. I am sure Drew has something to say about that. Henry and Ainge will be cut come 53 time. We need to sit Favre! I almost don't want to watch the game Saturday. Let's see that O-line, RUN RUN RUN. J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS "

Randy Lange Said:
"Howard, WCBS-TV is televising the Jets-Redskins game in New York on Saturday night. NFL Network is simlucasting the game but that does not affect WCBS. "

Thu, August 14, 2008 - 7:58am ET"WOW I REALY LIKE THIS KID RATLIFF,I REALY DOUBT THAT THE JETS WILL LET HIM GO ESPECIALY WHAT HE HAS SHOWN THIS SPRING,I BELIVE HE IS BETTER THAN CLEMENS,THE ONLY QUESTION HIS WILL THEY KEEP 4 QB."
Ira Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 9:01am ET"Randy, Is there as limit to how many players a team can place on IR per season?"
Randy Lange Said:
"I'm not aware of an IR limit, Ira."
razmataz Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 9:29am ET"Randy, adding to what others have said, do you think the KC era as a Jet is at an end as well, could we see the Jets go in a different direction and keep Ainge and Ratliff and let them learn behind Farve for a year or two. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds cause youd hate to risk losing the 2 rookies QB's"
Randy Lange Said:
"razmataz, all I know is that Coach Mangini has said Kellen Clemens is the second QB for the Jets' game vs. Washington."
Matty D Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 9:32am ET"whats up Randy...how come im not hearing much about Thomas Jones during traing camp? Or is he just being consistent and staying under your radar?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Matty D, Thomas Jones is running well in practice and is lying low as far as his interviews with reporters. But we'll be visiting with him soon and we'll have our eye on him when he's out there against the Redskins."
BigEd Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 9:55am ET"How has Clowney been doing overall Randy? Seems he's making some great plays, but also some drops too. I'm hoping he takes the slot as the #3 and in a season or two becomes a #1 or #2."
Brad Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 10:20am ET"Randy, any way the Jets would seriously consider keeping Ratliff & Ainge and getting rid of Clemens? I think both have way more potential, but worse case scenario, if Favre goes down, do you think they would really feel more comfortable with rookies? At this point, i'm thinking they might... your thoughts?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Brad, that's more than I can predict. I'm going to see how the next three preseason games play out."
CCY Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 10:33am ET"Randy, has the CP/KC morphed into a Ratliff/Ainge contest for #3. Do you think the final outcome is more of who is more likely to pass through waivers to the taxi squad then who is more ready to step in in an emergency?"
Randy Lange Said:
"CCY, I rely upon Coach Mangini's mantra, which is that the Jets will do whatever they determine to be the best thing to help the team win. "
Ira Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 10:38am ET"I see it has Stuckey #3,Smith #4 and Clowney #5. Funny how some fans and all the media said the jets WR group was real weak. Well it doesn't look that way now. And we are not even factoring in Baker,Franks and Keller. Favre will have lots of targets to throw to. And what happens then? It opens up the running game. This could be the best offense since the 98 and 02 season. Go Jets!!!!"
Dunnie Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 10:42am ET"Hey IRA and Randy ... lost with all the news about Favre, Ratliff etc is the progress of Vernon Gholston. Please tell me he is not looking like a bust ... is he looking any more comfortable in the LB spot. last week he was a fish out of water. A complete liability in coverage situations. Yikes !! Also ... is Ainge done in your opinion ? I really liked his throwing motion, but Brett R is shining !!"
Ira Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 11:38am ET"Dunnie, Chill out. No reason to use the bust word after 3 weeks of practice. He has excellent speed and i even saw him stay with Clowney on an out pattern. He is learning a whole new position and it will take time. My guess is he will be used as a edge speed rusher on passing downs in early on. On his 1st play last week he drew double coverage which of course opens it up for someone else."
dc packer fan Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 11:50am ET"I remember Carroll well from playing in GB. They thought that he had tremendous talent but he made serious mental mistakes during the games resulting in big penalties. Wasn't he waived in mid season? I know that they got so frustrated with him despite his obvious talent. Maybe he has matured?"
OriginalJetFan Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 12:30pm ET" Kind of an interesting dilemna, Ratcliff looks good but do you keep him as number 2 behind a sturdy but 38 yr old QB. I would have to say Ainge is the odd man out here, Ratcliff staysfor his potential, Clemens to have a game experienced backup. Wasted draft pick?"
Ken Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 1:19pm ET"Ira, Randy & the they rest of u. I'm telling you guys that RATLIFF might be the BETTER QB between Clemens and RatLiff. Clemens has MORE REAL game snaps and more 1ST team snaps than RATLIFF, but yet he doesn't seem to be getting better & RATLIFF seem to developing quicker than Clemens. RATLIFF might be the eventual REPLACMENT for Favre. The JETS need to give RATLIFF more snaps with the 1ST team."
Drew Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 1:22pm ET"Row....You know me like a book man LOL... Hardy dropped out of the first round for a reason. Dustin Keller was the correct pick at 31......Dunnie, you have got to calm down. Gholsten will be fine. We do not need him to dominate in August. When he learns the sytstem he will be a terror on tackles in this league. This guy will be our S Merriman. "
Hogan Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 1:23pm ET"Everyone needs to chill on Gholston. He did not look that bad vs the Browns. I belive he had 3 tackles, thats all J.Mayo had and they say he looks good."
Ira Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 2:41pm ET"Ken, Ratliff is playing better then Kellen right now. And i agree with you Kellen at least has some game experience. They are working in Ratliff the right way. No need to rush him or put more on his plate then he already has. But next summer Ratliff will get his chance to compete for the QB job if Favre quits after this season. "
Ray Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 2:55pm ET"The Jets have a decision to make on qb's at some point. They won't carry 4 so who gets left out? If they put Ratliff or Ainge on the practice squad, they wont' be there for long. Haven't gotten to see Ainge in action yet, but Ratliff looks really good so far."
Frank Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 4:29pm ET"Ray, Ratliff at a minimum will be #3 or maybe 2 on certain game days. Ainge is not going to practice squad or someone will sign him off of it. He will end up on IR with some malady so the Jets can protect him. The real QB competition is going to come when Favre leaves. Giving Ainge a year to learn the system and with the development of Ratliff and hopefully Clemens we should be in good shape."
Ray Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 4:35am ET"Frank that would be ok with me, I don't like the thought of losing any of them right now. Same with the wideouts, the only one I am not really worried about is Smith, who doesn't seem to have progressed like I thought he would. Hope to get to see them throw in Henry's direction on saturday."
Row Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 4:40pm ET"I just don't like how this has progressed. NFL network is showing Jets camp every day on total access. A bunch of trash talk heading our way. It's just making it seem to me that Favre is bigger then the Jets. Next thing we'll hear now introducing Brett Favre AND the New York Jets. I don't like it. Can't wait to see the Rookie's tomorrow: Henry, Ainge, Lowery. Do we still have the OL rookie? "

Kellen is in a battle he never expected. Nice to hear Henry's name along Stuckey and Murrell. This is Murrell's chance to win a job since Kassell is out for the year. Randy, How much did Favre work tonight?"
