08/13 — If Brett Favre’s progress with the Jets could be compared to a Spanish class, the quarterback would be familiar enough with the language to pass the midterm, but he is still far from fluent, according to Jets coach Eric Mangini.
“There’s a lot going in, a lot of things he’s able to associate with,” the coach said in today’s news conference. “It just doesn’t roll off the tongue like he’d like it to. He’s been speaking another language for a long time.”
But, Mangini added, Favre is able to associate concepts and understands what the offense is looking to get done on each play. The coach believes that all the signal-caller needs is time.
“That’s going to come after getting used to being in a huddle, saying it a few times, going through the walk-through and seeing it on tape,” he said.
One good sign, Mangini noted, was that Favre has been making dummy audibles at the line to confuse the defense. When he is most demonstrative in his codes and gesticulations, the coach noticed, sometimes it’s “just fluff.”
Mangini also is weighing whether or not to appease the new guy by allowing him to select practice tracks. Favre spoke with the coach about possibly adding some country music to the playlist, but Mangini, who said that he will consider it, isn’t sure how many other players would appreciate rustic crooning.
As for Saturday’s preseason game against the Redskins, Mangini said that he would like to play the starters longer than he did last week versus the Browns. He didn’t specify how deep into the game they would go, though. The first-team offense and defense didn’t get an ideal 50-50 split in the first quarter (the defense got the bulk of the work), so the coach would like to extend them.
He added that Shaun Ellis, who has been out with a hand injury, is expected back before the season-opener but has only “an outside shot” of playing on Saturday.

I would like to know where I can write to him, as I have in the past.I find no addresses for your stadiams or camp, and when he was at GB. I could always drop him a "HI", or wish him a happy Birthday. He knows me as G-Ma Arl. Thanks for any help you can give me. G-Ma Arl"

I am wondering if at Fvare's age, that he may need more than 1 day to heal. I am wondering if Favre may need 2 days in a row to heal. Favre mentioned in his press meeting that he would talk to Mangini about his soreness."

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 1:33pm ET"randy, Ellis should sit until the opener. He will be fine no reason to take a chance.Heard favre's arm is tired and could rest it in tonights practice. Nothing to be concerend about though. I can't believe how different this offense will look this year. Schotty must be like a kid on Christmas morning. really want to see them run the ball better this week then last week. GO JETS!!!!"

Anthony Said:
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 1:53pm ET"They should not over throw Favre. He is 38 its not like thats old but , you want to save his arm as much as you can. But at the same time it could just be he hasn't thrown a ball since the NFC Championship so it might just be the opening soreness that all players feel when they come back into playing. They should definitely consider taking it easy on his arm. "

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 2:08pm ET"Love the country music idea. Hey, if they can get used to playing hard listening to slow country music, maybe they wil play harder when when it actually means something. I can't wait til opening day. Its like knowing what you're getting for christmas but still have to wait. I've been waiting for years for the Jets to do something right. Best off season ever good luck on the 40 year anniversary."

I've followed brett since he turned pro and the guy's 38 - you don't get up to speed as quick at that age - believe me I know! p.s. this site is a damn sight better than another team we won't mention. well on the way to being 'converted' andy - the EX cheesehead in wales, UK"

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 4:32pm ET"Brett likes Faith Hill's husband; his name escapes me now. I am excited about seeing Brett play, but am concerned with unrealistic expectations. He is an incredible player, but he can't play offense and defense. GB has a much better team. The best way for Brett to go to the Super Bowl would be through the Vikings, but obviously the Packers did not permit that. Brett is still a joy to watch."
Row Said:
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 4:43pm ET"Thanks Drew. I really think we could use Brad Smith a series a game, but throwing in addition to running. I'm tired of motion when we need to just set the FB and run it down their throats. Trickery is not good scheme, especially when teams see it several times a year. Please Brian, take it from Marty."

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 5:04pm ET"I know there are some hard feelings toward the wave of ex-packers fans now professing to support the jets, but its not disloyalty on their part. Brett was the heart of that team, and he played every down with all he had. he gave us much to cheer about, and we are merely being loyal to the very person who has been so loyal to his many fans. I still can't believe the Pack traded him."

I hope you guys don't get too overhyped about thus season as I really have NO IDEA what wil occur. The one thing with Favre is you will get the straight goods. That may not always be the best as sometimes fans don't really want truth."
rediwatbadger Said:
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 5:40pm ET"Sure find this 400 characters goes fast! But, as I was saying, I am a Packer fan, formerly from Green Bay, who loves Favre and now am a Jets fan. I am a bit concerned with all the comments that the Jets don't have the personnel (team??) the Packers do, and Favre has to know that. Regardless, Favre will bring so much, if healthy, he will bring some wins where formerly that didn't occur. But TTT."

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 5:54pm ET"scjoe, to support a gunslinger you need a D you can count on to limit the downside. Saturday you'll get to see just how far along they are. They must either have a good rush or a solid secondary. Or both, which I think they will eventually have."

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 7:24pm ET"Why are so many people talking about our weapons on the team?! Last I remember Favre has never beat this same team with CP playing. Now we got Favre with these weapons. We may not remember this but we've been off and on for the past 8 yrs. Last yr. we was off, and this one we'll be on. Nothing changed from 2006 except the fact is we got more weapons! Go Jets!"

I know once they see this 3 time MVP, Super Bowl Championship winner, and all time record breaker fired up, WATCH OUT because the GUNSLINGER IS COMING TO TOWN. And The Jets will be back on the map!!!!!"

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 9:10pm ET"Why do I get the feeling we're gonna need the trick plays anyway this year. I haven't heard a word about Gholston, Pace or BT. Say a prayer that the silence about the pass rush is on purpose. All anyone seems to care about is Favre. Unless the defense can get sacks, it doesn't matter how good the secondary or the offense is. Wed, August 13, 2008 - 10:11pm ET"I like Bretts' honesty during his interview. He loves the game. Period. Give him a few weeks to develop chemistry with his O, and watch him fly. I'm sure he'll have his fair share of INT's, but his yardage (& 1st downs) and TD's will more than compensate. Allow me to dream....Its gonna great to beat NE for the AFC championship this January."

Next, to the author, Stephen Haynes: good job man. You got all the points across nicely, and without any snide remarks. Come on back, y'hear? Now all we need is Faith and Tim to become Jets fans, and were good to go!"

Thu, August 14, 2008 - 10:59pm ET"True Packer fan here. Before Favre and after. I have no concept of what a "Favre" fan is, but anyway. Jets fans, Brett Farve has just taken your team from you. Hope you enjoy watching Brett Favre "and the jets" on Sunday. Brett Favre is one of the most exciting football players ever, but a great leader he is not. Gunslingers are not leaders. I hope the Jets have a top 10 defense they'll need one"

Fri, August 15, 2008 - 12:26pm ET"Green Bay made an error by letting Favre go to the jets, the only good thing about it , they sent him far away so that the two teams can only meet up in a Super Bowl. Once a Pack fan but no longer . Say prayers for Aaron Rogers and his backups."

But letting Favre go to the Jets was a mistake that is truly a loss for the Pack and a gain for the Jets. Unfortunately, This mistake has made me reconsider being a fan of the Packers. Then I wonder, is it too late to become a Jets fan? "

Sat, August 23, 2008 - 10:26am ET"I have been a Packer fan since 1959. I had a lot of fun when I was really young watching Lombardi, Starr, Dowler, Magee, Kramer and the like. Then, for over 20 years I watched a very average team. Ron Wolf brought in Brett and Reggie White and what a joy it was to be a Packer fan all over again. I still consider myself a true Packer fan and probably always will be. GO BRETT...GO PACK! "

We're about to find out how this team, which has won nothing in 40 years, feels about their most loyal of fans. Favre's acquisition means nothing as it realtes to PSL's. He's not even going to throw a pass in the new stadium. At the very least, they have to charge half of what the Giants did. "
