08/11 — Jenn Sterger, a southern girl with flair, is taking her act to New York. In an effort to improve their gameday experience, the New York Jets have hired Sterger as the club’s gameday host.
“It will be fun. It’s going to be sassy,” Jenn told me recently of her new role. “I plan on fully embracing my new role as a New Yorker.”
In her new position, she will interview celebrities and will host a pregame “Keys to the Game” segment and the club’s pregame components up until player introductions. She’ll also play a role during TV timeouts and at halftime.
“I thought it was a great project. I think it’s really cool that you guys are trying to integrate a new kind of media into your gameday experience,” she said. “It’s going to be fun and more interactive for fans. If it gets them in the seats earlier and out of the freezing parking lots a couple of beers earlier maybe, so be it. I promise I’ll put on as good a show as I possibly can.”
Less than three years ago — Sept. 15, 2005, to be exact — an unknown ABC cameraman panned in Jenn’s direction and play-by-play man Brent Musburger offered a famous line:
“Fifteen hundred red-blooded Americans just decided to apply to Florida State.”
And right there, Jenn Sterger met the nation. Turns out she was more than just a pretty face, though — this Seminole majored in criminology and psychology. She was interested in law but FSU didn’t offer a prelaw major.
So if Brent doesn’t spot JS, where is she now?
“I’d probably be in law school actually trying to take Drew Rosenhaus’ job," she said of the South Florida superagent. "That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a sports agent. First I wanted to be an attorney, and then I decided I didn’t want to argue with people for a living. Then I was like maybe if I was doing it for sports and it was something I was passionate about, I’d feel differently.”
A few months back, E! Entertainment ran a program titled "20 Hottest Women of the Web." Jenn ranked No. 19 on the list. She’s turned into quite the entrepreneur the past couple of years.
“I did a weekly advice column for CNN/SI and then I started doing their road trips. I was one of their pioneers in their Web video,” she explained. “It was really cool. Going to visit different campuses was like going to college without the homework.
“I’m working on several projects now and a buddy of mine who’s in the industry was like, 'I really would like to have you in my movie.’ So I’ve actually shot one movie already [a scary flick, “The Tenant”] and then I’m getting ready to go out there to shoot another one in the next week or two. I’m also going to shoot another special for E.”
But Jenn is a genuine football fan who has attended multiple Jets home games in the past few years. She grew up in Tampa and remembers going to Buccaneers games with her father when the Bucs weren’t experiencing all that much success.
“I was a Buccaneers fan when they were the 'creamsicles,' ” she says with a playful laugh. “The Big Sombrero [otherwise known as Tampa Stadium] — that was a tin can of a stadium.”
This Saturday, Jenn makes her off-Broadway debut at the Meadowlands. She’ll make the short drive over to take the microphone on what will be an exciting night as Brett Favre makes his first Jets home appearance.
“I’m actually staying in Hoboken in New Jersey and I love my place,” she said. “I have the best view ever. You wake up to the Empire State Building and you’re just like ‘Good morning.’ ”
Some might be interested in what outfit JS is going to wear, but I have no idea. It should come as no surprise that she’s got something creative up her sleeve.
“Strictly customized,” she says with that trademark smile. “They gave me some really cool stuff to wear from the team store and whatnot, but I’ll fix it the way I like it.”
I tell her that in years past we’ve had some late-arriving crowds. We’ve got a great fanbase, but they’re big tailgaters, traffic can be brutal, plus they’re building a beautiful New Jets Stadium so there’s construction everywhere.
“It’s not just the Jets. Trust me,” she says of the arrivals. “Hell, if they can find parking, they’re happy. It’s New York in general, it’s not just Jets fans. I hope people take the time to check out the new entertainment that they bring in.”
Jenn’s pumped for Jets football. The sassy southerner makes the jump to the pros this weekend.
“I’m trying to become a little less southern, a little less gentle and a little more Jersey, I guess you could say. I’ll try my best,” she said. “People up here always tell me I’m too nice, so hopefully Jets fans can make me a little stronger.
“Plus I look great in the green.”

Mon, August 11, 2008 - 6:23pm EDT"What a joke. She has no discernable skills, doesn't provide any relevant service, or in any way contribute to the NFL going experience except to give drunk old men something to ogle. Way to go NFL, way to go Jets, way to raise that bar for women everywhere. Erin Andrews is ashamed of this stunt."

Mon, August 11, 2008 - 9:47pm EDT"The Jets were obviously afraid their status as laughingstock of the league was in jeopardy. Great work, guys."

Mon, August 11, 2008 - 10:41pm EDT"Hey - she is cute and all, but I have to agree with Joey, what the heck is she doing here? If someone says Hey! Melissa Stark from NBC, Bonnie Bernstein from ESPN or Erin Andrews, that's great! But all I see are photos of a girl posing in short jerseys who was pursing law? She should have just joined the flight crew. Give a chance to someone with a Communications background! Agree with Joey!"
JP Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 10:48pm EDT"Ok, I just read her background. I guess the Jets like to hire people who are cute faces from FSU stands that pose in Playboy. - I don't know who is in HR, but I bet you there are hundreds of decent hardworking people who have gone to College and applied to the New York Jets, yet were beaten out by this. Thank God Brett is here! At least there is something positive to talk about!"

Tue, August 12, 2008 - 10:49am EDT"im sure others were trying out for the position as well. She earned it. The jets will be proud to have jenn, even if she is nice to ogle at (like thats a bad thing). Just cuz a girl's attractive, doesnt mean she doesnt have the smarts too. Good choice Jets! "
Jay Said:
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 4:32pm EDT"You have to be kidding me. What is up with this? The Jets have really got me wondering on this one. So much for giving its young female fans good role models to aspire to. Why not give a smart, respectable educated woman a chance at this job and not one who just wants to show off in short shirts? I'm really appalled. "
MikeMc Said:
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 6:40pm EDT"Jay and Joey, lighten up nobody is forcing her to do anything, its still America, land of the free, if this is her gig & it sells HORAY for her , move on . "
JP Said:
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 12:09am EDT"Yes, it is the land of the free MikeMc, which means that the Jets have the right to hire someone from the NJ area - believe me there are some of the most beautiful and talented women in the world right here that started out at College - not by being an FSU fan. - I agree with Joey and Jay on this one. Just a foolish move for the organization."
BLJ Said:
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 9:49am EDT"If anyone knew anything about her on this page you would know that she has a law degree, and happens to be very attractive. So she's a model? Big deal! She's smart, respectable and educated. What-say-you now?"
Anonymous Said:
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 6:03pm EDT"1st of all, she says in the interview that she is in Hoboken. She is in Jersey City which is different than Hoboken. She must be ashamed to say what city she lives in. I have met her, and while she seems nice, I can't get past the fact that she's a pretty face whose 15 minutes is long overdue to expire. Looks trump talent every day of the week, as she has proven. "
Jay Said:
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 10:51pm EDT"BLJ, the article says she "thought" about pursuing a law degree, she does not "have" a law degree. Big difference. The point is, the Jets are overlooking lots of QUALIFIED women AND men, just to feature some girl they find attractive. Like JP said, this is a foolish move and one the Jets will hopefully reconsider when no one pays attention to her after her first few announcements."
Katie Mitchell Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 9:01pm EDT"Just because she is successful at modeling, doesn't mean she isn't smart or hasn't earned the position. Yes, her beauty and lack of clothing may have gotten her in the door, but it doesn't mean she doesn't deserve the job. She actually has done quite a few hosting jobs both on radio and the web. She was a featured reporter with Sprint for the NFL kickoff in Indy last season. Give her a chance"
Jay Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 10:13pm EDT"I'm not at all saying a person can't have beauty plus brains. I don't appreciate the message the Jets are sending to young women--in order to be successful in this industry you basically have to be pretty and take off your clothes. That's not a message I want my daughter to receive. The way Jenn talks in this article she's acting like an airhead, not a qualified professional like Katie said."
Scooter Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 5:01pm EDT"What happened to going to the game for the GAME? I love the Flight Crew, but this? We need someone yapping during timeouts, unless they want to talk about other NFL scores/news. Got my "Woody letter". I guess Jets are going all Disney on us. Thanks Gate D'ers for being idiots and bring us normal fans this. How many games before fans boo Jenn when she shows how little she knows about Jets?"
Scooter Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 5:12pm EDT"Didn't the Islanders try some stunt like this with WB-11 "Traffic Chick" Jill Nicolini? Have we as a franchise sunk that low? I miss the days of Shea Stadium's "Moon Man" (the originator of J-E-T-S chant, not Fireman Ed!) leading the show. That's all we needed! How about we just win some games and forget the glitz! (...or is this to keep people from going to Gate D for "entertainment"?)"
Cathy Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 7:39pm EDT"I agree! Let football be football. We don't need girlie girls to make it better . Win games attract new fan, simple as that. "
Jake Said:
Sun, August 17, 2008 - 3:48am EDT"Granted Jenn may not know a lot about the Jets at this time. She isn't just a pretty face. She does know the game of football, but believe she mainly reported on college ball. Why not give her a chance. Roll with the changes instead of fighting to keep it the same year after year."
Anonymous Said:
Sun, August 17, 2008 - 10:36am EDT"The Jets have turned their games into girlie games for airheads with their flight crew dancers and moderator. Why can't they play just regular pop music that the fans would enjoy rather than that rap music? Have they ever polled anyone that goes? I guess they are oblivious to that. The Jets are in their own airspace."
Scooter Said:
Sun, August 17, 2008 - 3:14pm EDT"Give her a chance? OK...I was at game last night. Jenn was H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E, Horrible, Horrible, Horrible! I'm not going to a Miley Cyrus concert where I need some high pitched voice cheerleader talking up the crowd. Her interview with Randy Beverly was a joke! Regular season prices for minor league stunts? Get rid of her NOW before the season starts."
Anonymous Said:
Sun, August 17, 2008 - 9:58pm EDT"Smoking hot!! she will only help if the team falls apart again this year."
Scooter Said:
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 6:35pm EDT"If the team falls apart she can only help by paying my PSL bill, otherwise she should go back to Florida."
Serena Said:
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 10:59am EDT"Are all of you "HATERS" kidding me? Do you really have nothing better to do with your time? That's very sad! Obviously you don't know Jenn personally. I have known her and her family for YEARS. She is extremely smart and knows a lot more about sports than you think. Why can't you just give her a chance? And as far as the "15 minutes" comment from some "anonymous" person...That's kinda old now isn't it? Move on...And the next time you want to bash someone...Don't be a coward...Put a name with it!"
GladWithoutChad Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 7:00am EDT"If you were at the game last week you got to experience first-hand the screeching shrll highpitched whining voice coming out of this very pretty girl. Thanks but no thanks. I agree that her interview with Randy Beverly was a joke. She had unorganized notes, stumbled all over the interview, and seemed to know no more about the Jets than my mother does. Why inflict fans with this whining hottie?"
Scooter Said:
Sat, August 23, 2008 - 11:59pm EDT"Well tonight's game wasn't much better. Would it kill the Jets to hire someone that knows what they are doing. Jenn was horrible interviewing @ halftime and her "play-by-play" of the kicking contest was bad. AND...who was the in game announcer this week? A little over the top with "another Jets first down!" This isn't college, this is the pros. Hey Jets, hire some pros!"
Jay Said:
Sun, August 24, 2008 - 8:22pm EDT"I saw her "prepping" last nite and all she did was continually flip her hair and flirt with guys in the stands. Luckily they sell plastic beer or her voice would shatter the bottles throughout the stadium. I'm calling to complain and ask that all who agree do the same. So much for Woody's family friendly initiative! Playboy models showboating, flirting and lacking real talent?! Nice Woody."
Byron, Fl Said:
Mon, August 25, 2008 - 11:16am EDT"Its real simple, she pays for a teleprompter and she can learn that way; in the meantime, we have real things to worry about: Making sure 2nd string O-line is solid, pick up Michael Strahan & keep the door open for a name RB to pressure current RB's. . Playboy models, showboating and flirting are exactly what I want from the Jets Flight Crew!"
john boehme Said:
Wed, August 27, 2008 - 10:19am EDT"As a 40 year season ticket holder, and an owner of the Pack, I'll see what I can do about a trade. How about 30 Packer cheerleaders for one Jenn?"
AL Said:
Wed, September 10, 2008 - 12:08pm EDT"I'd like to complain about these sour, jealous, and bitter fans that have nothing better to do than complain about a sweet gal like Jenn, if you would spend a second to get to read about her, instead of wasting your time crying about her flirting "JAY" you would see she's just a regular person. Get a life! You GO JENN, don’t the bullies get to you, Your biggest fan, AL "
