08/10 — The situation was ready-made for heroics. The final "situation" of this afternoon and evening's late training camp practice was a 23-second two-minute drill. The offense, trailing, 24-16, got the ball first-and-goal at the opponents' 9.
And Brett Favre, participating in his first two-minute drills as a Jet, was up with the first offense. But he didn't get to go right away — RT Damien Woody bounced up a split-second before the snap for a false start and a penalty lap.
Then at first-and goal from the 14, Favre's first pass, for TE Dustin Keller, was batted down by CB David Barrett.
But second down was the charm. WR Laveranues Coles, quiet for a while, erupted for the big play, taking off straight down the field, then curling behind CB Justin Miller to gather the Favre bullet for the touchdown with seconds to play.
However, the O still needed a two-pointer for the tie. Favre took the snap, made one bounce-read, then another.
Finally he had to pull the trigger. He tried to zing it to Jerricho Cotchery in traffic at the goal line. The throw was too hard and too wide and skipped through the end zone, hitting the wooden Toyota advertising board with a loud smack.
So the O lost, 24-22, but Favre-to-Coles looks like a winner just as Favre-to-Cotchery looked in today's first practice.
In earlier team drills, Favre also lasered a couple of completions in a row to WR Chansi Stuckey over the middle before finding Keller over the middle past Hank Poteat for a score.
Kellen Clemens answered with a TD drive of his own. It featured a completion to Wallace Wright in front of rookie CB Dwight Lowery; then a rollout dumpoff while being chased by Calvin Pace to Leon Washington, who darted up the sideline running up the backs of teammates and defenders to the 10, then a TD to RB Musa Smith.
And Brett Ratliff got into the act with a long ball to Wallace Wright against Poteat and Drew Coleman.
But Ratliff was also rejected when he tried to get the ball to Washington downfield a little, only to have the pass emphatically swatted away by Lowery.
And Favre also had a ball deflected by CB Darrelle Revis when he tried to throw into traffic.
Revis also offered a good-natured gibe toward the new QB in town after Favre had to take a delay of game during goal line drills.
"Hey, Brett," Revis called out. "This isn't Madden '09.
Record Weekend
The crowd for this late practice was held down to 1,500 due to thunderstorms that rolled across Long Island earlier. Although the rain tapered off and stopped during practice, the weather seemed to subdue the Jets and the crowd.
But the total attendance for the three "Favre practices" this weekend was smashing: an estimated 16,000 fans, no doubt shattering any two-day training camp total in Jets history.
One in attendance at the morning session and in fact for several sessions is former Jets, Patriots and Rams LB Roman Phifer, who's been known to drop by to say hello with Eric Mangini, one of his former Pats coaches.
Ratliff-to-Clowney II
My feature on Ratliff and David Clowney, who conspired on two 70-yard-plus touchdown passes at Cleveland on Thursday, went up on newyorkjets.com around 6:30 p.m., right before I headed out to practice.
What was one of the first plays I saw? Ratliff trying to find Clowney on an intermediate route — and throwing a high, hard one that S Abram Elam leaped up to intercept.
Nevertheless, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Also, here is some more research on two 70-plus TD passes in a game, courtesy of my good friends at Elias Sports Bureau:
Last player to throw two-plus TD passes of 70-plus yards in one game: None other than Favre, Green Bay at Denver on Oct. 29, 2007.
Last player to catch two-plus TD passes of 70-plus yards in one game: WR Lee Evans, Buffalo at Houston, Nov. 19, 2006.
Last pair of teammates to connect for two-plus TD pass plays of 70-plus yards in one game: QB J.P. Losman to Evans, Buffalo at Houston, Nov. 19, 2006.
What Does Waived/Injured Mean?
Jason, a Radar commenter, asked a question that I'd like to expand on. OL Clint Oldenburg was waived/injured Saturday, as was undrafted free agent RB Danny Woodhead earlier in camp. Jason asked me earlier this afternoon:
"What happens when a player is put on the waived injured list? Do they leave camp upon being waived and return home? Do they wait the time frame to possibly be picked up? What is that time frame? Do most injured athletes get picked up even though they are injured?"
I turned to Ari Nissim, the Jets' director of football administration for an explanation.
"A player who is Waived Injured will revert to the club's injured reserve list once he clears waivers and will not count against the 80-man roster limit," Nissim told me. "And yes, during the waiver period, that player may be claimed by another team.
"Simply put," he said, "Waived Injured is a way to place someone on IR without him counting against the 80-man roster."
Also, Jason, the waiver period is a 24-hour window.

It's only a few practices but is it me or does this offense now seem to have a bounce in its steps? Also i am on the same page as Favre when it comes to playbooks. No need for playbooks to be so big. He said they run about 70 plays and most times you run the same play twice. I couldn't agree more.GO JETS!!"

No loyalty they'll be gone if the season goes sour. Where were all these fans last year or when we went 1-15 in the 90's. Guess I'm just not use to our Jets being in the spotlight. We might as well enjoy it while it lasts. "

How can trading Favre be good for the team? In McCarthy's words "The train has left the station moving forward" Too bad McCarthy &Thompson didn't have one way tickets out of WI leaving Brett in Green Bay where he belonged. Best of luck Brett. Go Jets!"

However the silver lining in the trade is that being a Packer fan (hating our managment for the most boneheaded move in NFL history) I can also be a newly minted Jet fan because of the seperation of conference! Remember we get him back to retire as Packer. How does that go now J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!! Best Wishes"

Mon, August 11, 2008 - 5:41am ET"I sort of agree with the poster who said the Packer fans will leave when Brett does. Long term, I'll always be a Packer fan (except this year), and I really hope the BF and J-E-T-S kick some major butt, but ultimately I'll return to the Cheeseheads. There isn't a player that is more fun to watch than #4. His INTs can drive you crazy, BUT oh, what a joy when he pulls off the impossible play!"

Mon, August 11, 2008 - 12:41pm ET"Question for you RANDY. RATLIFF looked really good in this pre-season game. He looked better than KELLY. When FAVRE leaves, KELLY CLEMENS may NOT be the best QB to replace him. That is why I think it is really important for the JETS take a good look at (RATLIFF & ANGIE), beacuse the JETS may not be able to keep all 4 QBs on the rooster. And suppose RATLIFF & ANGIE are BETTER QBs than CLEMENS? "
Fran'scan Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 12:48pm ET"Your comments on Coles are not only ridiculous, they are also unfounded. Coles has been a model Jet for years. One cannot be caught how to be clutch or play every play like it mattered most. Watch his downfield blocking skills, speed and toughness before you make such comments. So he had a good relationship with CP & made it known he was not happy with his leaving. Football remains a business son"
CEDRIC Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 12:49pm ET"Ability, no one forgets about what LC has done or can do, its just that his attitude is a little childish for what can be a great season by the talent that we have. If he's mad about Chad, he has to remember that even he left the team to do his own thing with the SKINs, so he of all people should know about the nature of the business. If Chad's showing class then he should too."
WBack Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 1:11pm ET"Guys, there's no reason to get on Coles... He has passion for his teammates and once he has some time to cool off he'll do the same thing with Brett. Coles has had an up and down relationship with the organization, so his displeasure is understandable. Chad will be fine, the new start might help him. There's a new blog site at thejetpress.com if you guys want to use it as a secondary site to this!"
Arthur Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 1:42pm ET"Ken, Roster and Depth chart is right here on the website for your viewing... its kellen, not kelly and ainge not angie. Also of interest, a rooster is a bird whereas a roster is that chart which you speak of. Do us a Fav(e)re and check it out."
Ira Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 1:49pm ET"Everybody get off of LC's back. It was ok when he played on 1 leg and caught 5 passes all for 1st downs down in Miami when the game meant nothing. He could have sat that game out with no questions asked. he could barely walk. So stop this LC bashing. The guy is still a very good WR with a heart like a lion. GO LC AND JETS!!!!!"
Ken Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 1:56pm ET"If COLES misses CHAD so much, then let Coles go sign with Miami ! This is a business. Coles has the right to miss his friend Chad as much as he wants too. But he better play 110% for the JETS, as long as the JETS are writing his checks. And if Coles doesn't like the JETS anymore, then he should say so, and go sign with Miami."
dhines Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 2:13pm ET"Just want to say, I used to be a Packer fan until they threw BF under the bus. Now I am a Jets fan. I just hope and pray Brett and the Jets have a good year. Gooooo Jets!!"
Frank Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 2:54pm ET"No way Ira, Coles has always been about Coles. He is getting paid a lot of money and he needs to stop acting like a petulant child this act is old and tiring. Did you watch Jets Nation last night? If anyone has a right to gripe its Clemens. He handled the interview with class and like a professional something Coles is neither. We have plenty of talented players he needs to go. Get Rid of Him!"
Frank Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 3:08pm ET"Amen Cedric! Let's also not forget that he would not come back to the Jets unless they re-did the contract he had with the Skins when he left the Jets and Chad had to take a pay cut to make that work salary cap wise. He then had the nerve after a 4-12 season and a lousy year for him to demand a new contract again. Enough of Coles we have a young talented and hungry group of receivers. TRADE HIM!"
Drew Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 3:19pm ET"Coles is and will always be a baby but I still want him on this team and starting. The guy makes big catches. He plays better with a chip on his shoulder so expect a big year from him amd Cotch. Frank... a Chiuahua??? Come on man...Glad to be back in the mix and getting fired up for this year. I would think you would have to give your boys Mr T and Mangini a little credit after this off-season??"
Frank Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 3:21pm ET"Amen Cedric! Don't forget Coles wouldn't come back to the Jets in the Moss trade until they re-did the contract he left them for. Chad the one with class and dignity reworked his contract so Coles could get another bonus. Then 2 years later after 4-12 and a lousy season he demands another contract. Enough with this guy we have hungry, young and talented receivers who can take his place.TRADE HIM!"
Row Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 3:55pm ET"All I know is, with the talent in WR we have, Coles shouldn't have anything to say. Not suiting up doesn't make a statment to me. It shows me just like last year that he was willing to sit out games with the C on his shoulder. I don't like that in a player. "
Cynic Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 3:55pm ET"Sure, whoever you are using my "Nom Da Guerre", "Chad"did get millions of dollars from the Jets, but you overlook the fact that Chad also took a major pay cut so that The Jets might improve the team and stay under the salary cap!"Grow up"?You don't know anything about me! If I were as presumptuous as you are,I'd say that you were among those who cheered when Chad lay injured on the field! "
Patrick from PA Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 3:58pm ET"Frank, so I guess in your opinion Brad Smith and these other guys with NO NFL EXPERIENCE are better than Coles? That's a pretty ridiculous comment. The 3rd reciever? Coles makes the other recievers better by drawing double teams all the time. He blocks well, plays injured, can run with the ball, what else can you ask for?"
CEDRIC Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 4:59pm ET"It aint that serious to Bash LC, but he's in an organization in which u cant speak your mind that freely, he'd rather not say anything at all. But i just dont want the chemistry of the team to get messed up."
cynic Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 5:57pm ET"Wayne,I'm not "whining"as you say,I'm merely pointing out the realities of pro-sports(and life)!Sure Chad isn't whining,and neither would I if I was in Chad's position!It's just sad that in today's world,that bottom line comes before loyalty! "
Frank Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 6:30pm ET"Patric from PA I'll clarify my comment. I meant Clowney is the #3 right now and given the opportunity based on his camp production and breakout in Thursday's game to vie for a starting spot. Coles is on the way down based on last year and this camp so far and I predict will be off the team by the end of this season or shortly thereafter. Brad Smith should be cut he has done nothing and over-rated."
Hattie Said:
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 10:56pm ET"Jets! Oh Jets...you have our Brett ..far...favre away, thank you for welcoming him with the respect and enthusiasm you've shown. His accomplishments on the field are in the record books, the ones off the field are rarely known, they speak to his character and generousity, he will make you proud. New York , thank you for welcoming our Brett & Deanna into your hearts, your gain, Green Bay's loss."
Row Said:
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 4:04pm ET"Frank and the guys, I pretty much agree with you on our Coles situation. When we traded for him, he only had one TD the previous year and hasn't scored more then 7/yr in his career. That would not make him a star. He's merely average, as for Brad Smith, he seemed to give up on a lot of routes Chad threw to him. He's good come the redzone. Don't praise Keller yet, he hasn't done much to impress. "
