08/08 — Now is a good time to sit back, take a deep breath in the lull and refocus our thinking.

Refocusing backward, No. 4 as a Jet has been monstrously huge. As someone in the Cleveland pressbox said to me Thursday night, "We knew this would be big but we didn't know it would be this big."

Having been immersed in reporting and writing mode pretty much from 12:01 a.m. Thursday until driving home from JFK at 4:15 a.m. Friday, that fact — Brett as NFL royalty — didn't hit me until I heard Johnny Donovan, the smooth baritone announcer on WABC-AM, one of the Jets' radio homes, intone this promo:

"WABC, home of BRETT FAVRE and the New York Jets."

Here are some numbers from our first day as the new home of the former Green Bay Packers QB and still NFL icon. In the first 24 hours since the announcement that Favre had been traded to the Jets:

■ The team sold 3,800 No. 4 Jets jerseys at jetsshop.com and newyorkjets.com, surpassing its best month in 2007.

■ Mike Ryan, our Manager of Web Operations, reported newyorkjets.com registered more than 2.5 million page views and more than 500,000 unique visitors to the site. Those figures represent a 24-fold increase versus an average day during training camp.

■ The TV ratings of the Jets-Browns game for WCBS-TV, even with Favre only on the sidelines in a JETS white top and tan cargo shorts, showed an increase of 67 percent for men 25 to 54 over the Jets preseason opener against Atlanta a year ago.

■ ESPNNews has been repeating the news conference this morning with Favre and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Eric Allen was there for newyorkjets.com and we'll have his report up on the site shortly.

■ And the seven Radar entries we put up Thursday generated 979 posted comments and still counting. (Not to mention a personal-best 169 internal emails from many different sources.)

Other signs of the new era are that 1050 ESPN New York, the other radio home of the Jets, will do one and possibly two of its Saturday afternoon radio shows from the Jets' single training camp practice at Hofstra (stretching begins at 1:30 p.m.). Jody MacDonald will go live from 10 a.m. until 1 or 2 p.m., followed possibly by either Brandon Tierney or Greg Buttle until 4 p.m.

To serve the needs of fans of all ages Saturday and again for Sunday's two-a-days, Jets Fest and Jets Shop at Hofstra will both be open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. PLEASE NOTE: Severe bad weather has just closed Jets Fest and Jets Shop today. Both will reopen at 8 a.m. Saturday.

One thing we have realized the past several days is that Brett Favre has a lot of fans. That perhaps was underscored by the announcement that WFRV-TV Channel 5 in Green Bay has made a request to CBS to air as many Jets games as possible this season. As a CBS affiliate, WFRV carries the AFC in the Green Bay area and can request games that may hold special interest to its viewers.

And many Favre and Packers fans have shown up on our site in droves. A few things that strike me about the traffic. One of the messages often repeated to us is to "Take good care of Brett." We will certainly try.

Some Radar Rules

This might be a good time to remind our new Radarheads who are or used to be Cheeseheads, plus our members in good standing, about the Radar rules.

We welcome all comments you may have, even strong opinions about the Jets in general or members of the team. But please remember that we are the Jets' official Website, not a non-affiliated bulletin board. We don't allow obscenities, profanities, vulgarities, etc., and we don't allow abbreviated or otherwise creative bad words if their meaning is clear.

We also don't allow derogatory namecalling or other ad hominem attacks, so, for instance, you shouldn't refer to certain people you feel are "idiots," "cheaters," "three stooges," and so on. I'm a condemn-the-sin-not-the-sinner kind of guy.

Needless to say, sexist, racist, homophobic or other insulting comments also won't make it up on the Radar, and we will look closely at what appear to be attempts to gain free advertising or promote other Websites.

We read over all comments —and their screen names — to the site, but our policy is not to edit. Either your comment goes up as is or it doesn't go up. On rare occasion we'll try to get in touch with you to clarify your comment, which is why you should include your email address with your comment.

One for All, All for One

There is a danger now and all season to focus on No. 4 and not on the other players on the roster. But that's not how Favre and Mangini played it Thursday.

"It's about the team, and hopefully after today and tomorrow, the distractions will be at a minimum," Favre said. "I'm just one man, one of 53."

"I talked to Brett about the team and the group of guys we have here," Mangini said. "I really like this group and I think he'll really like this group and fit in. He's just another member of the team. When I addressed the team, I told them it's not one person who changes things and addresses things, it's how we collectively move forward."

Words to live by, especially here on newyorkjets.com.

"As a long time JETS fan, I want to extend a warm welcome to all of you Favre fans from Packerland. Most of us will do everything we can to "take care of him," in so far as we are able. But be aware; NYC is not Wisconsin. Jets fans can be really brutal, and are not always very smart."
