File Under: David Bowens, Drew Coleman, Dwight Lowery, A.J. Schable

08/07 — Because of the crush of Favre business and the rapid unfolding of events since our downpour stoppage in the first quarter, I'm combining the last two quarters into a second-half Radar entry.

One note is that it's not getting old for David Bowens. The 10th-year man has made the move to inside LB and he's playing here in the third quarter of the preseason opener, but he's making plays.

Cleveland, for example, were getting a head of steam up on a field-length drive, but Bowens showed some nice pass defense to help hold the Browns to a field goal.

On first down, Brady Quinn, still in at QB behind Derek Anderson, swung a pass out to FB Charles Ali. Bowens smartly broke on the pass and took Ali down for a zero-yard play.

On second-and-10, Bowens was further downfield, immediately wrapping up TE Brad Cieslak for the solo tackle after a 6-yard gain.

Thus set up, the Jets' second D picked up the third-down stop when CB Drew Coleman, getting his hands on a lot of balls this camp, did it again, swatting down Quinn's slant to force the FG by rookie Jason Reda.

Then for the fourth quarter, let's return to Brett Ratliff and David Clowney, the stars of the second-quarter Radar entry. In short, they did it again.

In longer form, Ratliff play-actioned, then dropped back and looked for No. 17 again. And there was Clowney, using his (apparently to the Browns) deceptive speed to separate down the left sideline past rookie Mil'Von James and second-year DB Steve Cargile. He caught the ball at the Cleveland 40 and this 70-yard TD wasn't as touch-and-go as his second-quarter 71-yard score.

Clowney has 163 yards on four receptions. That's the most yardage by a Jets receiver in a preseason game since at least 1992. Since 2000, the only receiver to gain more yards in a regular-season game was Jerricho Cotchery, who had 165 yards on seven catches in last year's Game 2 at Baltimore

After that, Dwight Lowery, who came to the Jets from San Jose State with a noted knack for interceptions, displayed one of his other talents: punt returning.

Lowery, who returned a punt for a TD at SJSU, did it again for the Jets, taking a punt 62 yards for the go-ahead TD with 10:02 left. Lowery, near the left sideline, dipped his shoulder to freeze Cleveland's Jereme Perry, then cut across the field, dipped again to get past punter Dave Zastudil, and beat Steve Sanders to the right pylon.

Here are the four Jets with preseason punt-return TDs in the last 15 years of summer games:

Year Punt Returner Opp Yds
1995 Adrian Murrell at NYG 56t
1998 Leon Johnson vs. NYG 65t
2004 Ian Smart at IND 59t
2008 Dwight Lowery at CLE 62t

Then Lowery turned to his specialty. Browns QB Ken Dorsey stepped outside to elude inside pressure from LB Marques Murrell, but then he made a bad decision trying to fire it to TE Martin Rucker. Lowery was all over the pass, picking it off just over the goal line and running it back to the Jets 14 with 4:02 to go.

The Browns got the ball back and tried to strike again, but the Jets had the answers to Dorsey's last four passes, including Hank Poteat's fourth-down pickoff at the Jets 15.

Thomas "Pep" Johnson's roughing-the-passer penalty — he was ruled to have landed on top of Dorsey after the QB released the ball — gave the hosts first-and-10 at the Jets 19 with 37 seconds left, so it wasn't over by any means. After three incompletions, including a strong Drew Coleman end zone PD, it seemed the Jets had finally iced it, but Lowery was flagged for pass interference on fourth down, so the Browns lived, first-and-goal at the 5.

But Coleman got another PD just over the goal line after he was initially beaten by WR Paul Hubbard, and Marques Murrell's penetration resulted in a fourth-down tip that produced an incompletion that concluded the game that wouldn't end and the Jets flew home, an hour later than planned (due to the first-quarter weather delay) with a 24-20 in their preseason opener.

Schable Injured

With 12 minutes to left in the game, TE A.J. Schable went down from a blow to the side of his helmet as he challenged a block on kickoff coverage. He stayed down on the Cleveland Browns Stadium turf as the Jets and Browns doctors and trainers brought out a stretcher to bring him off the field.

As Schable was worked on, both the Jets and Browns players came off their benches, each team forming a quarter-circle, stretching from the 20 to the 35, observing. And the fans left in the stands applauded as Schable was lifted onto the stretcher, while the Jets players moved from their quarter-circle to surround him and offer their wishes and prayers.

Although he was immobilized, he put his thumbs up to the fans as he was wheeled off.

Head coach Eric Mangini said Schable "does have movement in his arms and legs. He has good strength. We'll go through a full evaluation and make sure everything's OK."

Welcome to NYC, Brett

Jets fans and Brett fans are being encouraged to go to New York City's City Hall on Friday morning. Brett Favre will be welcomed to the city by Mayor Michael Bloomberg at City Hall in an event that is set to start at 9:05 a.m. Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson will also be on hand.

"Coles would have to play first. (to get the nickname) I think this will be his last season. I loved seeing us run for first downs, with the exception of Klemens QB sneak in the 1st. "
