08/07 — A friend of mine and I back in my former life as a newspaper journalist used to have an exclamation for a situation that cried out for something more that a simple "Wow!" We would say, "This ... was a Wa-OOH!"
Today in Jets lands it's a Wa-OOH.
The trade for QB Brett Favre has made my morning incredibly interesting. The crush of new and old interest in No. 4 and the Jets has been off the charts. I know we've been getting 100,000-plus visitors to our site every hour, and that was before the sun came up. Now I can only imagine.
Another way for me to measure the intense interest in Favre finally coming to New York (after the Jets tried but just missed drafting him in 1991) are the comments being sent to the Radar. On a normal busy day after a newsworthy development, I might have 20 comments waiting for me in the morning.
Today, after five hours of sleep (sorry, had to crash), there were 164 comments. And as I tried to get them up on the site, I realized this was a lot like shoveling sand against the tide. Or as my good friend Al Pereira, the Jets team photographer, just said, "It's like trying to push a car up a hill with a rope."
On top of that, the aforementioned traffic to newyorkjets.com has been so great this morning that as I try to work, I keep getting logged off of my site.
As a result, I apologize to all you Radar readers who are waiting to check out your comments and those of your fellow Jets fans and Cheeseheads and Favre-siders. I was able to get a number up of comments up, some from 3:30 a.m. and some more recent, before the system cut out on me.
Here is a link to SportsNet New York's SportsNite report on the Favre trade.
I can tell you that Eric Allen and I will be working all day. EA will be covering Favre things back in the New York area. I'll be working all day to try to clear the decks of all comments before I head the short distance from the team hotel to Cleveland Browns Stadium for tonight's preseason opener.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. but at 6 p.m. the Jets will hold a news conference featuring Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson, GM Mike Tannenbaum ... and Favre.
I can also tell you that things will pick up once the Jets return home to training camp. Jets Fest and Jets Shop at Hofstra, which were originally scheduled to be dark Friday on the players' day off after the Browns game, will now be open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Then on Saturday (single practice) and Sunday (double practice), Jets Fest and Jets Shop will both be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
That's another Wa-OOH. One of many more to come, I suspect.

I've followed Brett closely and the Green Bay Packers Mgmt. over the years. Their really bad choice is your gain. I'll be flying both flags this year. If Brett and Deanna are happy I am happy. Good luck to you and Brett! Nancy Florida Fan"

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:06pm EDT"Randy - This is my first visit to nyjets.com. Congratulations to the Jets. I have enjoyed watching Brett Favre play since I saw him throw his first college pass at Southern Miss. As I am sure they know, Jets fans have an exciting year ahead and many new fans, as well. Please note that although Brett grew up in Kiln, MS, he now lives a couple of miles down the road from me in Hattiesburg. "

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:27pm EDT"As a Bears fan I am considerably upset by this trade. Several of Brett's favorite targets for his passes in recent years have been our linebackers and defensive backs. Yeah, we all know that Brett is a first round ballot hall-of-famer but, ladies & gentlemen, his best days are far, far behind him. The Jets are about to find that out - big time!"

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:29pm EDT"Randy, I cannot truly embrace Favre as our QB because he gave away Mark Gastineau's sack record. I would really like him to publicly acknolwedge the fact that he was wrong and apologize to #99. Can you ask him at the press conference to comment on this. Only then can Jet Nation get behind him. Thanks very much. "
Lani Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:30pm EDT"I've been a Packers fan ever since I started watching football, and I was a Packers fan because of Brett. I don't live in Green Bay so detaching from them was an easy choice for me since Brett was leaving. My bf is a Jets fan, and I go wherever Brett goes (metaphorically of course because that would look psycho lol)."
Brett Favre Fan for Life! Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:30pm EDT"i hope there is room for those of us former Packers fans to be Jets fans!!! Much like Brett, i'm ending a 15 years devotion to the Pack to be a JET!!!!! i'm excited and can't wait for Brett to wear his new jersey and step onto the field!"

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:31pm EDT"WELCOME BRETT, GOODBYE CHAD. I do not really have a comment about the posting I just want publically thanks Chad for everything. Thanks for helping us try to win in that game where you hurt you arm, thanks for being a constant pro throghout all last year when you were replaced. AND THANKS FOR GIVING US EXCITING GAMES WITH YOUR EXCELLENT GAME MANAGEMENT SKILLS. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Jason Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:31pm EDT"To Chad Fan: What was even the point of posting that comment? And how cna you no longer be a Jets fan? Is it just because they released Pennington? Well I agree with everything this organization has done and it was the right thing to do. But Randy what im wondering is if there is any word on whose going to start in the Preseason against the Browns? "

Packer Fan Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:32pm EDT"I am a Packer Fan, no longer a Brett Favre fan. What people don't see (outside of GB) is that he has turned into a total diva. He has been saying he was going to retire for the last 4 years. You can't run a team like that. It is also no secret that he hates mini camp and also hates boring 'administrative stuff' If everyone else on the team is doing it, he should too. No love loss here."
Steve Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:32pm EDT"I love the Jets, I have always like Brett. Today is a very good Day! I feel bad for Chad, but you have to respect the arm of Brett and Jones should have a field day! "

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:34pm EDT"All real Jets fans appreciate everything Chad has given to the green and white, but his time is over and now is the time of one of the most accomplished QB's in NFL history. You can take Chad and jump on board another ship 'Chad fan'. best of luck to the both of you!! J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!!!"
Loyal Fan Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:36pm EDT" Maybe you never were if you thought keeping Chad around was best for the team. Don't get me wrong, awesome guy, but there's no way the Jets could have kept him forever, and Clemens probably would have won the job anyway. Chad will be better off in Kansas City or wherever he goes. Either way, Favre's an improvement over both."
Damone Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:36pm EDT"This is to EVERYONE that is always on the radar(Frank,Drew,Cedric,Ira,etc)...isn't it funny that you see how many fake fans we just lost and gained. We all should know that this makes the team better but how much better and how long. Those are the questions and i dont know about you guys but i couldn't even sleep last night because if he can play like last year,We WILL one of the best teams."

Kozmik Void Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:37pm EDT"While it's tough to see Chad go (which presumably he will, probably by the time this gets posted), the truth of the matter is, he may not even have gotten another chance at the reins of this team. This does not solve the long-term question mark behind center, but it does give the Jets the opportunity to see just how good they actually can be this year with the big acquisitions in the O-Line. "

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:40pm EDT"you know what, i thought the jets were gonna be pretty good this year before all this favre stuff, but now that he's here i think we have a legitimate shot at winning it all, our only real problem was QB but now that that is over with we could definitely challenge the patriots for the afc east- anyone agree or disagree?"
Homer Simpson Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:40pm EDT"Look at that, they're getting the ol band back together. Favre and Franks, one of the greatest QB/TE tandems on the 20th century. This ranks up there with the likes of John Elway and Shannon Sharpe. It's good to see the management staff taking the initiative to put out the best product. I'm excited to see just what Favre can do with such a talented crew."

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 12:42pm EDT"I'm glad to see the Jets picked up Farve, But I'm not happy to see Chad go. I think they should give Brett some time to learn the Jets offense and give Farve the green light if Chad has any problems this year. What about Clemens? If Brett is the QB this year and he goes the whole season it's only setting Clemens back."
Margie Taylor Said:

A while ago I was extremely exited about the season and the Jet's potential. Now it won't end too soon."

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:00pm EDT"This just might be our year to win, win, win. Favre is the shot in the arm the Jets need. A seasoned, durable tough guy with a heart QB. I feel bad for Chad, but it just wasn't meant to be. Go Jets!"
FavreFan4Ever Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:01pm EDT"The jets fan base just widened dramatically, in direct proportion I would assume, to the packers fan base decline. My heart is with Favre, wherever he plays. My new #4 jersey has already been paid for in support of Favre, though it breaks my heart its not green and gold...at least I can still enjoy seeing him play. "

You' ll come around. Just like others like Ira....will as well. Winning does that. This team is "NOW" better....Isn't that what the NFL says? Now is all that matters."

I went to the bank and withdrew my life savings (hey a house can wait), I have booked flights, accomodation and importantly game tickets.... I will be visiting the US for the first time next week and hopefully seeing Favre in action. Worth it to see the legend in Green & White!"
Ann Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:02pm EDT"New York is very lucky to have Brett Favre as their QB. Green Bay will feel the lose as Aaron Rodgers isn't and will not be as good as Brett Favre. There are going to be alot of Favre NY Jet's jersey wandering around Green Bay. And that is all Ted Thompsons doing. Ted Thompson is not fit to be a general manager of any football team. We will be watching both teams play. We will follow Brett."

Salemi Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:10pm EDT"I will miss Chad dearly. Chad got us 10-6, and thrashed the Packers 38-10. I know it would have been different this year with a fantastic ground game and a good defense. Chad would have finally shown his magic like 2002. Brett will be exciting and I look forward to it. I just hope it was worth it. 9-7 or 10-6 with Brett will not be that big of a deal. Chad, I'll miss you and will root for you!!"

Joe Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:14pm EDT"Can't wait till next years cheap drama about how he wants to "retire". This is a stop gap measure. It's a way to have us not think about the PSL charge we are going to be hit with at the end of the month---they'll be able to say see what we are doing for you. And you'll note the top of the Jet web site is all about selling Jet jerseys. "

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:20pm EDT"I am a "Yankee" transplant from Boonton, NJ (29 years and counting) and living here in Brett Favre's old backyard not far from Kiln, MS (I pass it every day). We have all watched Brett grow up since high school football and USM and as a close knit country community, we naturally know his family. Rest assured that Brett is a 100% Mississipp Country Boy and will never be Broadway Brett so be gentle!"

Michelle Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:31pm EDT"Congratulations NY Jets. I love football period. The Green and Gold to me are the greatest and Brett could frustrate and exhilarate all within a matter of 30 seconds. I loved seeing him play and can continue to do so. He's the greatest and the Jets are very lucky, enjoy the ride like Green Bay has for all these years. "

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:31pm EDT"I've been attending NYJ home games since I was old enough to walk. I'm finally excited about something the Jets upper mgt did! They redesigned their o-line, the wideouts are top notch, our RB's are amazing, defense and special teams are playoff caliber and now with the addition of Brett Favre, we finally have the missing piece! All I can say is B-R-E-T-T.. BRETT! BRETT! BRETT!!!!!!! Sorry Chad...."
farvefan Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:32pm EDT"I am a life long Packerfan, and Packer fan only, but until Farve leaves the Football and the Jets I will have 2 teams. Good luck Favre and the Jets."

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:33pm EDT"The Jets just gained a packer shareholder and fan from Iowa--I am thoroughly disgusted with the way that Packer management, led by Ted Thompson, has treated Brett --all he wanted to do was play football--how is that such a bad thing? Your gain is definitely a Packerland loss."
Adam Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:33pm EDT"It's time to give it our everything!! Chad, you're going to make a great QB coach. Kellen, you're going to witness greatness. Hold on to that clipboard! Now lets beat them Patriots!!!!"
Rudy Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:33pm EDT"Part of being a fan of an NFL team is that you live and die with the team you got. I was looking forward to Chad having a great season with the revamped offensive line. All you need to make it to the superbowl is a good team with a decent QB; just ask Trent Dilfer, Eli Manning, Ben Rothlisberger, etc. Brat Fa-vre also went through 4-12 seasons and sub par (remember why they got the #1 pick.)"
uncle joe Said:

scjoe Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:40pm EDT"Don't know if and when my comment will appear, but I will go on record as saying I think this was a huge mistake! I believe Jets management is looking more at what Favre has already accomplished and not what he is still capable of accomplishing. At this stage of his career, I don't see an overwhelming upgrade to what Chad could have done, if it were five or six years ago, I would have. Good luck."
Abbey Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 1:40pm EDT"Born and raised in Green Bay, and have been a fan of Brett since he came here. I hope you all treat him well and support him as much as we did (and still do!) We'll definitely miss you Brett!!!"

Bryan Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 2:13pm EDT"I've been a Jets fan for 31 miserable years. I have never been as proud to wear green as I am today. This (along with several other offseason moves) represents a huge shift in the ethos of the organziation and truly illustrates a commitment to it's fans to put a quality product on the field. There is a sincerity in this message that has been sorely lacking for decades."
heather Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 2:17pm EDT"If you are not going to be Jets fan because of chad leaving ....obviously you are not a true Jets fan? I loved Wayne Chrebet, he no longer plays; I do not particularly like Favre and now he is a Jet. No matter how many changes the team has I will still be a Jets fan. "

Lauren Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 2:23pm EDT"Favre will forever be a Packer no matter where he ends up. We will glady share him though. Look to gain a lot of Jets fans who were initially out of state Packer fans. They will follow. But most of us - Packer fans - will remain Packer fans. Not saying I won't watch every Jet game I can....heck - the farther Favre gets with you, the more we get in return. Go FOR IT! "

Thu, August 7, 2008 - 2:25pm EDT"how can you not be a Jets fan? They just got a great quarterback who has the potential of sending the Jets to a place they have yet to see in 40 years; the Superbowl. On top of all these other amazing players the Jets picked up this year, with the recent edition of one of the greatest quarterbacks who ever played the game, they have a real shot of buckling down this year. "
Kristy Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 2:26pm EDT"Now I'll have two teams to watch. Will always love the Pack - even though I don't like what they did. Now I can cheer for the Jets, too. I really hope he has as great a year (or two) with you as he has had for us. Whatever happens he'll be great to watch. He'll drive you crazy at times, but you'll be cheering like mad when he makes one of those impossible ones. Enjoy it all!"

Became a Packer fan and a huge Favre fan (while remaining a Jet fan, too). Favre is a blast to watch, plays like a kid, loves to have fun, makes the game fun. And he's a winner. The Jets are fortunate to have him. It's a dark day in Wisconsin. I never would have expected this!"

John Said:
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 2:30pm EDT"A great move by the Jets. This is the most buzz this team has had in years, and the talent surrounding Favre will flourish with him on the field. The energy at the home opener will be off the charts, especially if the team reconsiders the ill-conceived idea to wear the Titans uniforms. Brett Favre must play his first home Meadowlands game IN GREEN AND WHITE!!!"
