Gholston, Keller Split Matchup of the Ones

File Under: Jerricho Cotchery, Ben Graham, Drew Coleman, Brett Ratliff, Vernon Gholston, Tony Richardson, Dustin Keller, Marcus Henry
07/31 — Today's late practice was a mix of offense vs. defense and then special teams. And it brought us some of the first matchups between the Jets' two first-round rookies.
It was a split decision in the 1-on-1 drills. Dustin Keller beat Vernon Gholston on a reception over the middle. But the former Ohio State linebacker came back and beat the ex-Purdue tight end for a "sack."
Some other observations from the late workout: Drew Coleman made a nice breakup in the back of the end zone of a Kellen Clemens pass intended for rookie WR Marcus Henry.
Brett Ratliff flung a pass toward the sideline and on this one Henry gathered in the deep ball, with S James Ihedigbo in the area.
TE Bubba Franks, after dropping a pass in the morning, seemed to put a pass on the turf at the goal line, but the official working the practice ruled Franks had control of the ball long enough for the touchdown.
CB Hank Poteat made a real nice read to come up and meet Musa Smith in the backfield on a running play for a "tackle" for loss.
FB Tony Richardson took a swing pass and put a jolt into rookie CB Dwight Lowery when the two met on the perimeter.
During a break, a fan yelled out to Jerricho Cotchery, "Hey, Cotchery, 1,500 this year! You're on my fantasy team." No. 89 wore a smile as he walked back to field some punts.
Speaking of punts, Ben Graham was working on his drop punt, that end-over-ender from Down Under that can be difficult to corral. In fact, Leon Washington muffed Graham's first punt, and Chansi Stuckey had a later one go "through the wickets" as well.
Graham was like a machine for a while, hitting four drop punts in a row with nearly identical 4.5-second hangtimes. And the Aussie, working with a few different snappers besides James Dearth, rescued one very high snap, took a few steps to avoid the rush and launched a hurried kick downfield sideways.
Remember that Friday's practice is closed to the public, but Saturday's Green & White Practice is open, is being held at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium, admission is free, and kicks off at 1 p.m.
Coming and Going
The Jets made two more transactions this afternoon, releasing just-re-signed LB Jerry Mackey and re-signing undrafted FA safety Nate Lyles.

Brett Ratliff has been the most impressive. Yeah, Favre isn't needed at all. Right. Wow, the IQ of some of our fans is astounding."

Mr. T is too smart to let this continue unless the Jets are really still trying to persude Favre into coming to the Jets. This is unfair to Chad and Kellen. Get this over with one way or another."
Dunnie Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 7:52am EDT"Finally ... it looks like the Favre thing is over. The Green Bay Gazette has reported that Favre has determined that he does not want to come to NY. Maybe this will embolden our own QBs and we can get back to business. Go JETS !!"

Fri, August 1, 2008 - 9:02am EDT"mloria, get a grip Ratliff is the QB on the bubble to even stick around. He is primarily taking reps with all the bubble players. Mat , that is not math but shear speculation. CP is clearly the leader of this team and should be the starting QB. With a sould line & good running game he will pick defenses apart"

He seems to be making plays out there...I wonder if justin miller doesn't work out will drew be given a chance....And on the Favre thing...I would love to get Favre for a 2nd round pick and chad. Can't give up a 1st rounder, but a 2nd weill do ONLY if he commits to playing for 2 years....I would love to have Favre, but not for a 1st rounder."

Fri, August 1, 2008 - 10:30am EDT"Hey Randy you should suggest making a poll on newyorkjets.com of who should be the starting QB Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens unless the coaches are waiting to see who they like and then ask the fans just to gurantee satisfactory from both sides because they will probably turn out with a 50-50"

Fri, August 1, 2008 - 10:48am EDT"Hello Randy. Randy can you answer this question for me? Erik Ainge and Ratliff, which QB do you think is looking better or performed better so far Erik Ainge or Ratliff?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Ken, I can't evaluate and compare personnel. Ratliff generally has been getting reps ahead of Ainge. Both have had their moments and thrown some good balls. The preseason games will help sort out the depth chart."
Drew Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 10:52am EDT"I know it's not a huge topic but Graham has got to have a better year. He really was off in 07. With the way our offense is going run and control the clock this guy has got to make big kicks. Let our "new" 3-4 attacking D make some plays deep on the other side of the field..... Hey Randy? Speaking of kicking...who is returning KO's this year, Leon or Miller or both??"
Randy Lange Said:
"Drew, I don't know who will be returning kicks yet. Both Leon Washington and Justin Miller are lining up back there, and so far we haven't seen a lot of full returns with two men deep. Cleveland will tell us a lot."
jcoffin Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 10:57am EDT"mloria, your challenging IQ's and calling for Favre ? Do you really think the Jets are a QB away from being better than NE or Indy ? You want to set Kellen back another year for what ? Maybe be another win or two. "

Ira Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 11:10am EDT"Drew, Don't get me started about Graham. I believe in Graham and have posted here that last year he had an off year because he was either hurt or overworked during camp. He took all the snaps after week #1 last camp and now will do the same this year. Randy, If i recall he punted about 15 times in last years green and white scrimmage. No reason for that plus taking all the reps at practice."

Fri, August 1, 2008 - 11:53am EDT"Jets fans...My biggest nightmare was coming true infront of my eyes as i watched practise the other day...Clemens as usual, uneasy in the pocket, making mistakes, throwing interceptions..ouch..and then look over to see Chad P. throw softies with a hang time of over 6 seconds for a 10 foot pass...I don't want Favre either, but to say the current QB roster is limited would be a huge understatement."
TATLAS Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 12:16pm EDT"The practices I have been to neither QB looked impressive.. If you can get someone like Favre with more power in his pass then go for him. I don't see why anyone would sya no...either way your getting a better qb then we have at this current time. I don't dislike Pennington but how many chances do you give someone"
Drew Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 1:25pm EDT"The feeling I am getting from the camp regulars are that Chad is doing exactly what we thought and Kellen has not progress much since last year. This is a nightmare for me. Yes, Chad can go out and win 8 games managing the game and making an play here and there. The problem is the same as always since Chad got hurt. We need everything to go right to score TD's. We cannot make plays down the field."
Drew Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 1:29pm EDT"This goes to all the Favre to Jet haters. The reason the Jets were looking into Favre is they see what we see. Chad is going to beat out Kellen and they want to improve that position. Believe me if they thought Kellen could beat Chad out this year the Favre talk would have never started. They (as would I) wanted Favre for a year or so and then "maybe" Kellen would be ready to lead this team"

Fri, August 1, 2008 - 4:19pm EDT"go after favre, but if he declines the offer stick to chad. he is reportedly having the better traning camp. he has had his struggles but he is resilent and a proven winner under. pressure. kellen is a big question mark. yes, he has big play potential, however he threw twice as many pics and td's last season. they spent money on the o line for runnung and consistent short passing down the field."

Fri, August 1, 2008 - 4:28pm EDT"good news for the jets that there top rookies are competing equally against eachother. however i still am not confident in gholston, he startes camp late due to contract issues. after the draft he was ranked 1. in biggest possible bust. keller seems impressive and the jets hould utilize him in slant and post patterns. leave the dirty catches to bubba and ( chris baker )?. heavy running game= chad."
Alan Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 6:24pm EDT"Im so glad alot of the jet fans who wanted Bret Favre before are realising not to do it! anyways think on the bright side jet fans, if we have a bad season we could always draft Tim Tebow! Just kidding but hey it wouldnt be a bad thing, and for the person who said something on Anquan Boldin, Jerricho Cotchery is much like Boldin in the way he gets his YAC which is what boldins known for. Go Jets!!"

Chad is a cerebral qb, and he's as accurate as they come. With the new o-line they've built in front of him, he'll be just fine, and Chad has the experience not to choke when it counts. Whoever gets the nod...GO JETS!!!!"

It was a pleasure watching. Chad vs. Kellen, I like CP but give ball to KC this year and see what he's got with OL, give him 3-5 games or yank him! "

See the wise old vet still shook away from Lowery. Experience is priceless. Other LS besides Dearth? Was Kassell one of them and who else? Could Dearth be in trouble because it's a #'s game with the roster. That could be a mistake he is money."
