07/26 — Danny Woodhead's injury at Friday afternoon's practice may have delayed the start of his NFL career.

Head coach Eric Mangini was asked about Woodhead at today's midday news conference after the NCAA's all-time rushing leader from Division II Chadron State was helped off the field Friday.

"Nothing certain," Mangini said of the progrnosis for Woodhead. "I'd say it's not looking good for him to be back anytime soon." The coach confirmed that Woodhead injured his knee.

Another topic was expected to come up and it did. The coach was asked if anything had changed from Friday or if there was anything he could say today regarding the rumors linking the Jets to Green Bay QB Brett Favre.

Mangini thought for a second or two, then said, "Ummm ... no."

But he did like one thing that both of the Jets' QBs involved in this summer's competition did do at this morning's practice: They noticeably took more opportunities to throw the ball away.

"The mistake Kellen made yesterday, the interception to Revis, that's a function of something you see with a lot of quarterbacks," the coach said. "They're trying to push the ball into a place you really can't push the ball into. Sometimes you've got to cut your losses, throw the ball out of bounds, then you punt. Punting's not always a bad thing.

"You've got to train yourself to weigh the ris/reward: Is it too much risk for the reward, a 10- or 15-yard completon? If it is, just sail it out of bounds. What I liked today is that both guys did that. ... I think Peyton Manning does that and he does a great job of that. He assesses it. If it's not there, throw it away. Live to fight another day."

"Farve would be a band aid, but staying the course with the qbs we have makes .more sense . Pennington will be a lot more effective with a rushing game seting up the ply action"

"The jets do not need 'another 6'2" QB, who's 39 years old'. The future says they'll need a 6'5" to 6' 6" QB to lead them to the ring. The other, smaller players are tough and good. Good enough to get ya to the playoffs. You need a tall, poised, strong armed Quarterback to win in December and January. Just look at the last 7 or 8 super bowl QB's!! Ainge is the future!"

"Any updates on Woodhead's knee injury? Was it a sprain, or tear? "
