07/21 — We're faced with a seeming impossibility: trying to find something to improve on from the 16-0 New England Patriots. But here's a ball we can take and run with for a while: the Pats' rushing defense.
Yes, New England was a respectable 10th in rushing yards allowed last season, but that's only part of the story. The Patriots also allowed 4.37 yards per carry in the regular season, and that figure wasn't in the NFL's top 10; it was in the bottom 10. Here are the league's 10 lowest-ranked defenses in yards per carry allowed last season:
| Team | Yds/Carry | Record, Playoffs |
| 32. Oakland | 4.80 | 4-12, no |
| 31. Denver | 4.55 | 7-9, no |
| 30. Miami | 4.51 | 1-15, no |
| 29. Cleveland | 4.50 | 10-6, no |
| 28. Buffalo | 4.39 | 7-9, no |
| 27. Houston | 4.38 | 8-8, no |
| 26. New England | 4.37 | 16-0, yes |
| 25. Kansas City | 4.34 | 4-12, no |
| 24. Chicago | 4.33 | 7-9, no |
| 23. Detroit | 4.27 | 7-9, no |
Interesting that the Patriots were the only one of these 10 to make the postseason. It could thus be argued that the statistic doesn't mean much — indeed, the 2006 Colts finished 32nd and last in yards per game and per carry allowed, then stonewalled their postseason competition all the way to victory in Super Bowl XLI.
But those are the two highest regular-season yards-per-carry averages by the 16 Super Bowl team since 2000. And the Patriots' 4.4 figure was the franchise's highest since the 2002 edition — the last one not to make the playoffs — gave up 4.7 yards a pop. So it could thus be counterargued that here is a red flag for Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli.
You can bet that the Patriots know all of this and more. There has been a changing of the 'backers up in Foxboro — their top draft pick, the 6'1", 242-pound Jerod Mayo, packs a club, and Victor Hobson was brought in from the Jets, while Rosevelt Colvin departed for the Texans and the ageless Junior Seau may still retire. Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel are getting long in the tooth, but they both can still bite.
Mix in a healthy Richard Seymour and his front-line mates, and we'll see how well opponents run on the Patriots this season.
We're down to one more of these AFC East Radar entries to go. Surprise: It's the Jets and a long-standing trend of theirs that not only leads the AFC East but, as will be revealed Wednesday, actually involves an NFL "record" that the Green & White equaled last season that you may not be aware of.

I can't wait to see what Keller has to offer, should be an explosive boost that we desperately need on offense. I just wish we knew who's going to be throwing to him. And I can't wait to see Gholston in action. Go Jets!!!!"

Mon, July 21, 2008 - 8:15pm EDT"Keller is not a TE, he should be listed as a WR. I give him 20 balls this year, maybe a few ST tackles. Baker needs to get his money. Nice stat randy, I was trying to state how the Jets D didn't really bow down to anyone last year. We held NE to one TD I believe, in the second half! I just don't understand the management here with Baker, never did! "

Mon, July 21, 2008 - 9:06pm EDT"I AGREE WITH LUKEV MYSELF. I RATHER HAVE A YOUNG BOOST ON THE TEAM ANYWAY! KELLER CAUSES MISS-MATCHES EITHER WAY! HE IS TOO FAST FOR LINEBACKERS BUT TOO BIG FOR SAFETIES! AND THEN REMEMBER WE HAVE A VETERAN IN BUBBA FRANKS THATS BETTER THAN BAKER ANYWAY IF U ASK ME!"

Teams should be able to throw on the Pats. Hobson and Mayo were good pick ups for the Pats and like you said should improve their run defense. The Jets gave up 4.2 per rush which was better then the Pats. Hard to believe."

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 6:38am EDT"I liked Baker but he brought this all on himself. Actually it was just what the doctor ordered. After the Kendall backfire you would think he would be afraid to go it again, BUT NO IT ONLY MADE MANGINI STRONGER AND MUCH WISER. Wouldnt be surprised if he brings in Kyle Brady for a tryout! Randy, what was the Vilma trade? because I thought we get a 2 if he plays well enough & Saints traded their 2 yesterday"
Randy Lange Said:
"uncle joe, the Jets have stated only that Jonathan Vilma was traded to the Saints for an undisclosed conditional draft pick."

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 7:47am EDT"Cimini's story on Baker showed that the Jets have the upper hand with the problem. He wrote as long as Baker is on the PUP list the Jets aren't obligated to pay his base salary. If they cut him, he'd receive nothing. If that doesn't wake Baker up well then its too bad. Hate to lose him but its time to move on. No distractions this year. Focus, work hard and WIN! GO JETS!!!!!"

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 10:20am EDT"Randy, If Eric goes with what he has done the past 2 camps and has a Green and White scrimmage closed to the public maybe he should think twice about it and have it at Hofstra Stadium and that would be a special thanks to all the fans who have supported them all the years they have been at Hofstra. GO JETS!!!!"

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 11:00am EDT"Hey whats this new PUP no pay wrinckle? Can that be done to any player who acts up? If This Gholston misses one day of camp! he missed enough already didnt he? Didnt like the pick, but sure hope I look foolish. Would of much rather of had Cromartie. Vernon will have a chance to show Miami, K.C., Raiders and N.E.(couldve traded up) what they missed out on All in the first, like 5 games. Better make em SORRY!"

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 11:18am EDT"Clemens' job to loose.Every D coach knows CP's pros & CONS.Clemens is still an unknown entity ,with a revamped O-line Defenses will have to respect the unknown. With Chad, Ds put 8,9 in the box because no one is afraid of the deep pass and then T off on the run. Plus if CP starts he will be looking over his shoulder & hearing Boos constintally, Not a Good Situation. Plus Clemens can scramble!"

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 2:30pm EDT"the patriots are most certainly a beatable team but the margin of error remains very low. Keller will be as good as the OC incorporates him into the playbook which history has shown hasnt been much. Hopefully Shottie will read this and change. I remain a big fan of Baker but its time to move on and hopefully get a 3rd rounder for him, with injury though i dont see that happening, 4th max. Go JETS"

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 2:34pm EDT"Ira, I agree trade Baker to the G-men. I'm not down on Baker as much as others, he's made alot of plays for us and he did sign a bad deal coming off an injury, I think trading him would be best for both parties. The pup list for him is due to a tweaked back not to rile or quiet him. Maybe we can make him a deal if he plays 16 games we trade or release him, just a thought."

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 5:01pm EDT"I am horribly upset at you guys giving these college players more credit then deserved. 6 year contracts, 30-50 million dollars and everyone on here thinks Keller is going to be a stud. These rookies have done NOTHING! When these guys make plays, then give them credit. Baker is proven, 41 catches, the guy blocked more then anything. Someone send me a youtube of Keller blocking. "

Wed, July 23, 2008 - 12:09pm EDT"I THINK BACKER PICKED THE WRONG YEAR TO TRY TO RENECOTIATE HIS CONTRACT,COMING OF A 4-12 SEASON IS NOT THE RITE TIME TO RENECOTIATE A CONTRACT,HE SHOULD PLAY THIS YEAR AND MAKE THE JETS THINK TWISE TO TRADE HIM OR GET A NEW CONTRACT,NOW HE IS IN A LOSE LOSE SITUATION,AS MUCH AS I LIKE BACKER HE SHOULD COME TO HIS SENSES AND JUST PLAY BALL,NEED GHOLSTON IN CAMP A.S.A.P.I HAVE A DREAM JETS 11-5 1AFC"
Ray Said:
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 3:14am EDT"Row, you'll get over it. In todays market that is what a top pick commands. That is why the owners have opted out of the CBA, they want a rookie salary structure. Everyone always sees the upside with rookies. I like him but Baker has had ONE solid year, lets see him do it again. I'll send you a youtube of Bubba Franks blocking, cause that is the guy taking snaps from Baker not Keller."
