File Under: Kellen Clemens, Jason Taylor, Miami Dolphins, Will Allen, Michael Lehan
07/15 — In the Looking for a Silver Lining Dept., the Miami Dolphins, despite their 1-15 record, did continue a long-standing positive tradition of theirs, and they continued it in their Week 13 game against the Jets.
In that game, you'll recall, CB Will Allen blitzed and executed a strip sack of Kellen Clemens in the second quarter. Safety Michael Lehan picked up the loose ball and took it 43 yards for the Dolphins touchdown.
Seems the 'Fins always return a loose ball for a score. With Tennessee failing to register a fumble-return touchdown last season, the Dolphins have the longest current streak in the NFL, 10 seasons, during which they've scored 12 TDs (nine on defensive returns, two on offense, one on specials).
Of course, the man normally lugging the leather to the house is DE Jason Taylor — he has five of those 12 TDs over the last decade, the most in the league in that span.
Interestingly, in the 12 games since 1998 in which Miami has scored off a fumble, they had won 11 of them until the Jets rolled last season, 40-13. Lehan, who scored his first career TD and also had his first career sack in that game, told the Miami Herald afterward:
"It's actually hard to recall the excitement. I don't even remember what quarter that was. Whatever the final score was, 40-13 or something like that, that's what's ringing louder in my head as opposed to the play.''
That's what the good players say about personal achievements in this ultimate team game. Taylor may not be back with the Dolphins, Lehan likely will and the Aqua & Coral, which has challenged the Green & White in often high-scoring, highly entertaining affairs over the last four decades, will regroup for a couple of more AFC East battles with the Jets in '08.
Here are the Dolphins' dozen fumble-return TDs over the last 10 years:
| Season | Player | Opp | Play |
| 1999 | DE Jason Taylor | at DEN | sack |
| 2000 | DE Jason Taylor | at CIN | sack |
| CB Sam Madison | vs. BUF | reception | |
| 2001 | DE Jason Taylor | vs. NE | aborted play |
| RB Travis Minor | at SEA | QB scramble | |
| 2002 | ST Trent Gamble | vs. DET | muffed punt |
| 2003 | TE Randy McMichael | at JAX | reception |
| DE Jason Taylor | at DAL | sack | |
| 2004 | LB Derrick Pope | at SF | sack |
| 2005 | DE Jason Taylor | vs. DEN | sack |
| 2006 | S Renaldo Hill | vs. MIN | run |
| 2007 | S Michael Lehan | vs. NYJ | sack |

Not sure on the stats but during that era I remember several games the D put about as many pts on the board as the O."
Dunnie Said:
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 4:17pm EDT"Oh man ... don't get me started on Donnie H's D. I could not stand it !! The "bend but don't break" mentality killed me to watch. I want a Chicago style D. One that is daring the offense to move the ball. One that strikes fear into every receiver's heart and causes QBs to lose sleep the week before the game. I could not stand Donnie H's D."

Tue, July 15, 2008 - 4:58pm EDT"Ya larry, they sure hit harder. We need to find where Steve Atwater is and sign him as a coach. I think it's a fair bet to say Revis brings one back this year. I sure don't want to see Ross do it again, sorry Chad. "
Larry Said:
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 7:23pm EDT"Sorry but I stand by my opinion that Hendersons defense was consistantly one of the best Ds weve had in the last 25 years."
Fran'scan Said:
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 8:59pm EDT"Ah the days of Donnie's D. When Edwards let go of the reigns he would be daring, he had a fiery assistant named willie gay, former CB (balls hawk, not man on man cover guy) who really had the DB's humming. Now all i know is i want Cox firing up the D, sutton may be good with X's and O's but lacks the motivation to make a difference. This is likely his last year. Go JETS !!!!!"

Wed, July 16, 2008 - 7:30am EDT"Larry, Henderson had only 1 good year. His 1st was in 04 his D gave up only 16.3 pts per game.Vilma had an INT for a TD vs the Rams in a game which they did lose. And D.Abraham had an INT for a TD in a win vs the Fish. Tongue also had an INT for a TD vs the Steelers in the playoffs. A game they should've have won. Not having J.Ferguson was a big loss for his D in 05. All the QB's went down in 05."

He is a good coach and has a lot of new weapons to use this year and a true 350lbs NT with jenkins. The D will be the strenght of this team and will carry it into the playoffs. GO JETS!!!!"
Hogan Said:
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 11:50am EDT"The D will not only be our strength this year it was last. The D held up 3 1/2 quarters almost every game but with the amount of thime they were on the field its amazing they did as well as they did. If we can keep the D off the field a little more they will be truly impresive."

Wed, July 16, 2008 - 1:25pm EDT"Randy, I have a question. It seemed to me that last year's O didn't seem very fired up. So I have to ask, when was the last time a player jumped into the crowd after a touchdown? Who was that player? "
Randy Lange Said:
"Row, that's not something I've charted. Anyone out there remember a Jets jump?"

Wed, July 16, 2008 - 1:31pm EDT"Hey Guys in between wetting lines and checking in. I see Ira is trying to keep guys in line here. Dunnie, you have no idea what you are talking about. The bend don't break was Cottrell not Henderson. Henderson employed an aggressive in your face D that was one of the best we had in years mostly with Parcells guys of course. I beleive we had a stretch of 8 games in a row with no points in 2nd half."
Ira Said:
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 4:47pm EDT"Randy, Not a jump but that celebration that Key had after he caught his 1st TD tops any jump into a crowd i have ever seen."

Wed, July 16, 2008 - 6:06pm EDT"Whats up with the drafted rookies it seems 95% are still unsigned, why do these agents want to hurt their clients by them not getting into camp on time? Do the clubs lowball until the last week in july? It seems the market has been somewhat set with the few top 10 picks that are signed, is anybody else out there as concerned as I am? We need max contributions from Keller and Gholston at least."
Dunnie Said:
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 8:21pm EDT"Frank your right ... it was Cottrell i was thinking about, my bad ... however Henderson was just as bad ... 32nd against the run in 05. Oh yeah .. thats 32nd out of 32 in case your counting."
Ira Said:
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 8:32pm EDT"eee for all you guys that are worried Lowery is in the house. Next up Ainge and Keller. Gholston early next week."
Ira Said:
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 7:13am EDT"Ainge and Lowery in the house. So the Packers have filed tampering charges against the Vikings that they made inappropriate contact with Favre. This is going to turn into a complete circus. In Chad or Kellen we trust. GO JETS!!!!"

Thu, July 17, 2008 - 7:38am EDT"We are a week away from training camp...draft picks still unsigned...Mr.T, lets go dude...I am concerned as i was last yr...Is a week enough to get through three draft picks and have them signed???"
Ira Said:
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 9:49am EDT"Pranit, Relax Mr. T is the master at getting these guys signed on time. Two more to go and they will all be in on time."

Fri, July 18, 2008 - 9:13pm EDT"Did I read that D Henderson's defense was great?? Isnt this the same guy who cannot keep an NFL job?? He did a nice job of blitzing every down and as I have stated before having a decent defense that misleading stats made our defense look much better than we were. Our defense was good when J-Abe decided he could take the field. Never made a big stop against NE!!!!!"

Sat, July 19, 2008 - 4:39am EDT"Randy , what a week , first they sign Dwight "Swipe" - which correct me if I'm wrong , Lowery had 26 Ints in college correct? He had 13 @ San Jose and another 13 @ cabrillo. Then they signed Ainge and today Keller too. I can't wait for the season to start - all the players Mangini has brought in so far fit his system perfectly - hopefully this newest group will do the same"

"Rickie, 26 college picks for Lowery is correct."

Tue, July 15, 2008 - 2:34pm EDT"Randy, Dave Jennings once told me a team that makes a game changing play that goes for a TD usually wins. Well your chart of the Fish winning 11 out of those 12 games proves he was right. The Jets have had their share of big plays like that 01 game in Miami when Glenn and Green each had INT's for TD's. Also M.Coleman had that big 98 yd INT in 99. Taylor was amazing and is still one of the best."
