File Under: Darrelle Revis, Chansi Stuckey, Thomas Jones, Jimmy Raye, David Bowens
06/15 — For the second straight afternoon of the minicamp, running backs coach Jimmy Raye conducted a one-on-one clinic with Thomas Jones in the early stages of practice just outside of the far end zone. Yesterday, Raye set up cones 5 yards in front of Jones and went through different breaks on short passing routes. Today, Raye and Jones worked on handoffs as well as techniques for hitting holes in the offensive line (upside-down trash cans spaced a few feet apart).
On the lower field, defensive coordinator Bob Sutton and defensive assistant Andy Dickerson worked with linebackers Jonathan Vilma and Eric Barton, zipping 10-yard passes as they moved laterally, facing the simulated quarterbacks.
With the whole team watching “first- and second-down review” drills, pitting the first offense against the first defense, the intensity was dialed up a notch when Barton made a diving deflection of a Chad Pennington 10-yard pass over the middle intended for TE Chris Baker, giving the defensive corps on the sidelines reason to chatter.
DE Bryan Thomas, apparently upset over a non-call one play later, trotted over to the referee, repeating the phrase, “Call it right or call it light.”
A short while later a runthrough of fourth-down plays was accompanied by the appropriate sounds of fourth down, with coaches on both sides of the ball yelling “Gotta have this!” and the “J-E-T-S, JETS-JETS-JETS” chant blaring through the speakers during the huddle. Pennington converted the first two attempts, hitting WR Brad Smith on a slant to his right, then Baker on the next play. The tight end made a nice adjustment on the play, trapping the slightly underthrown ball to his midsection on a 15-yard route toward the left sideline.
Chad then overthrew WR Jerricho Cotchery on the third go-round for the first-teamers before hitting Cotchery after he ran a nice 10-yard route toward the middle of the field.
Other plays and players of note from the afternoon:
● DE David Bowens always brings a lot of energy to practice and continued to impress with his play on the field. The character teammates call “D-Bo” broke through the line to get to RB Cedric Houston near the line of scrimmage on a run to the outside during 11-on-11 drills. A few plays later, Bowens showed good speed on a blitz, powering his way toward QB Kellen Clemens to force an incomplete pass.
● Rookie CB Darrelle Revis dropped a punt this afternoon, perhaps fighting the sun and the high punts of Ben Graham. Revis was running forward to catch a short wobbler from the Aussie when the ball bounced high off of his shoulder and rolled 10 yards behind him. Revis took his medicine and ran a lap for his second dropped punt of the day.
● The catch of the day came late in the afternoon practice. The second offense struck big downfield when Chansi Stuckey leaped and made a one-handed grab of a 40-yard Kellen Clemens throw in between CB Drew Coleman and rookie S James Ihedigbo.
● Clemens then struck again on an over-the-middle dart to WR Frisman Jackson on CB Hank Poteat to set up first-and-goal at the 3. Four plays later, Clemens tried to fire a fourth-down touchdown pass, but Ihedigbo bounced back with a diving pass breakup just over the goal line.
● Earlier, Stuckey made his first p.m. circus catch, coming back to gather in a slightly underthrown 40-yarder from Marques Tuiasosopo in front of a double-team.
● Brian Mulligan, who works that sound system that has become synonymous with Jets practices, said before the afternoon practice of some new equipment: "We worked out the kinks and got a lot more juice. I think we contributed to a couple of false starts." One more O-line penalty may have been forced on that last Clemens drive.

Sat, June 16, 2007 - 8:38am ET"Its only OTA's but it seems that there will be plenty of competition for the 4th WR spot. Smith, Stuckey, Dwight and Jackson will battle it out this summer. Since Revis is having a little trouble handling punts right now maybe Stuckey can secure a spot if he can do the punt returns."

Baker, can i say A.Gates type of plays this year. Schottenheimer will open up the playbook more for him. Team leader in lap running?"
