06/23 — It was a weekend of homecomings for at least three Jets vets.
WR Jerricho Cotchery and S Kerry Rhodes returned to their Alabama roots — along with some of their Green & White friends — to give the kids of the Birmingham area some fun and games, a football camp, and some words of inspiration.
"I wanted to give kids in Birmingham opportunities I didn't have," Cotchery told the Birmingham News. "Well, not opportunities. I had opportunity. I just didn't have many resources. And I always figured if I made it, I wanted to come back to help kids understand about setting goals, achieving them and making decisions that would help them become successful."
Jerricho and his wife, Mercedes, who established the Cotchery Foundation last year, and Rhodes hosted a bowling party at the Lightning Strikes in Trussville — does that say sweet home Alabama? — for kids from the area's Boys and Girls Clubs.
The party included a list of Jets that included noted charity-kegling QB Chad Pennington, RB Leon Washington, G Brandon Moore, CB Justin Miller and former Jets draft choice Titus Adams, now a DT with the Bengals. Pennington had a wedding to attend in West Virginia on Saturday, but the rest of the Jets stayed to serve as counselors for the second annual Cotchery-Rhodes one-day football camp at Legion Field.
"We want to encourage kids and their parents — particularly the parents — to get kids involved in activities that keep them from just sitting around," said the man we've come to know as J-Co. "I just want these kids to know that somebody believes in them."
And in Sioux City, Iowa, Matt Chatham staged his Soft Bowl I before what the Sioux City Journal described as "a modest turnout" for some good local causes: to benefit the activities departments of the city's public schools as well as the Little Sioux Boy Scout Camp, damaged by a recent tornado.
"It's great to see all these young faces out here," said Chatham, a product of Sioux City's North High and nearby University of South Dakota, who invited K Mike Nugent and QB/WR Brad Smith to town for the event. "We have a great group of guys here who love to shake hands and hang out with the kids.
"I know this is an inaugural event, so there's a little bit of a 'We need to show you what our product is' type of deal, but it's definitely going to grow bigger and expand. I want the people of Siouxland to let me know what you want out here, what you want to be entertained by."
The people of Jetland will be entertained by Chatham, Cotchery, Rhodes and all the other Jets players getting rested up for the next several weeks, then coming back refreshed for the biggest preseason and regular season of their professional lives.

Its refreshing to read about after all these off the field issues and problems that so many players in the NFL have had. So the Jets haven't won any Super Bowls for awhile but these guys are champions in my eyes. "

Tue, June 24, 2008 - 8:29am ET"Randy, After just watching those highlights of Klecko how is it that he is not even considered for the Hall of Fame?"
Erik Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 11:03am ET"Randy, I second that notion from Ira. And why isn't Mark Gastineau in the Hall of Fame, or at least have his jersey number retired? I think the general consensus is that Mark has more of a chance of going to the Hall out of the two. If Mark didn't retire so early he would have been a first ballot Hall of famer. They were both beasts on the Sack Exchange! Go Jets!"
Eric NM Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 12:36pm ET"It was a pleasure watching the Sack exchange--even though suffering through the usually poor QB antics of Todd and OBrien (Don't remember which coincided with Sack exchange heyday). As for HOF, why do you say Klecko is not considered? I'd be shocked if Gastineau makes it ahead of Klecko--it would be because of his off the field antics and his sack dance and not because he was a better player. "
Ira Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 12:57pm ET"Erik, There are only so many #'s they can retire. Teams would end up running out of #'s at some point. But Klecko needs to be in the Hall. He is the only player to be named All-Pro at 3 different positions. That is something very special and he should be rewarded. "
Nic Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 2:23pm ET"I agree with Erik about Gastineau's number being retired. He was one of the greatest pass rushers of all-time and I think Gastineau and Klecko will be in the Hall someday. Also Ira, Dan Hampton was named All-Pro at 3 different positions as well. "
Ira Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 3:12pm ET"Nic, Klecko made it at NT,DT,and DE were as Hampton only made it at DT and DE to my knowledge."
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, the NFL's 2007 Postseason Guide says Hampton made the Pro Bowl at DE-DT-NT as well."
Ira Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 4:04pm ET"Thanks Randy and sorry Nic, didn't realize that about Hampton. But still Klecko deserves to be in the Hall."
Kevin Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 4:42pm ET"Hey guys, Ronnie Lott also made All-Pro and the Pro Bowl at three different positions too (CB, FS, SS). He is also a former Jet (I know not for long but it's still cool that he was a Jet). "
Randy Lange Said:
"Kevin, the NFL ignores the distinction between FS and SS in its Pro Bowl history and officially lists Lott as a starter only as CB and S."
Bill Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 6:13pm ET"I'm new to Randy's Radar but I'm already a big fan! I have to agree with everyone on here that Joe Klecko and Mark Gastineau should be in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. If the Jets had won a Superbowl in the 80's then I think they would both be in the Hall hands down. "
Benny Said:
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 10:29pm ET"Hi Randy, are the Jets going to honor the "sack exchange" when the new stadium opens? And can you tell us who's up next to have their number retired? It's gotta be Mark's #99 or Curtis' #28 I would think."
Randy Lange Said:
"Benny, I've heard nothing about whom the Jets will honor in 2010 and which number will be retired next, but all your ideas sound good."
Ira Said:
Wed, June 25, 2008 - 9:54am ET"With all the talk about the new stadium the question of who will play the 1st game there has to have come up.Since the AFC East doesn't play the NFC East until 2011 they should have both teams open on the road in 2010 for the preseason and then have them play their preseason game. This way both teams open the new stadium. Oh and BTW 2010 will be a Jets home game. "
Nic Said:
Wed, June 25, 2008 - 11:21am ET"Ira, good idea man! I'm sick of the Jets always being second banana to the Giants. If I could have it my way, the new stadium would be called "Jets Stadium". Randy, I just ordered your book "Stadium Stories: New York Jets" and the "History of the New York Jets" DVD online and I can't wait to get them! GO JETS!!!!"
