File Under: Matt Chatham, Brad Smith, Iowa, Mike Nugent, tim dwight, Sioux City, Soft Bowl I
06/20 — Matt Chatham's got a lot going on these days. He and wife Erin are proud parents — I should've mentioned Matt in my Father's Day tribute featuring Leon Washington last week — of Lex William Chatham, born May 11.
And Chatham's also going back to his roots this weekend as he hosts a charity softball game in his hometown of Sioux City, Iowa. Matt Chat, a graduate of North High, has even given the game — which he's holding to benefit the activities departments of the three Sioux City high schools — a football name: Soft Bowl I.
In keeping with the super hype, Chatham has also invited a bunch of football players to town to help with the fundraising and mix with the fans.
"We think it's a great group and we're really excited about it," Chatham told the Sioux City Journal. "I went out of my way to find people who like to do charity things, interact with the crowd and don't think of it as a chore. A lot of these people have never been to Sioux City, so I'm sure they'll appreciate going to a new place."
Among the Jets who will be pitching in are kicker Mike Nugent (becoming quite the multisport star after coaching at a Red Bulls soccer game last month) and QB/WR/RB Brad Smith. And Tim Dwight, a teammate of Chatham's with the Jets and Patriots and a fellow Iowan, will also be on hand.
The game begins Saturday at 12:15 p.m. CDT at Lewis and Clark Park, home of the American Association's Sioux City Explorers, and there will be an autograph session before the game and a concert featuring Omaha rock band 3D afterward that Chatham is geeked up about.
I'm not saying you Jets fans here in the East should hop a plane and make a weekend of it, but any wearers of the Green & White who are in the neighborhood and have a wide-open Saturday dance card may want to swing by for the fun and games.
Numbers Game
Again with an eye to those of a numerological bent, the three newest Jets have their green and white jersey assignments for the summer.
Safety Cameron Worrell, who wore No. 44 with the Bears and last year with the Dolphins, has No. 45 heading toward training camp, with second-year safety James Ihedigbo still sporting 44.
The versatile A.J. Schable, who theoretically could wear something in the 20s, 30s or 40s as a fullback, in the 40s or 80s as a tight end, or in the 60s, 70s or 90s as a defensive end, is listed as a TE and will start out at No. 48.
And punter Joe Smith won't make anyone forget about Brett Favre, but the man who executed all the kicks for the Yakima Mavericks the past several years nevertheless will check in at No. 4 as a Jet.

Oh did it ever occur to U that all the Oline Help we got in the offseason would actually allow Baker not to block so much & would probably make him have a more productive year in which he would have more of a reason to ask for a new contract? Keep following the Media. Baker is the laughin stock to all Ex Vets turned analyst..."

Revisit & Restructure dont mean the same thing, BUT MAYBE I'M WRONG. Thats my last comment on the Baker situation, say whatever else u want about it, I'm done. Bring on Training Camp GO JETS!!!!! "

I never said they had to pay Baker I said they need to resolve the issue so the circus doesn't resume when training camp starts. It's up to Tangini to figure out how to resolve it. By waiting this long and longer Tangini is closing the door on the opportunity to replace him. Bubba and Keller are not the answer and they know it. "

Sun, June 22, 2008 - 5:16pm EDT"Just thought i would throw this out here. The Jets do make 4 WC trips this year but they do have some advantage. SD has @ Den/Oak, Oak is @ NO and Balt, Sea is @ Stl/Ari, SF is @ Buff/Mia. So the Jets could be considered trap games for all those teams. Also Ari is @ Wash the week before they play the Jets. Every team has anounced the opening day of camp except the Jets. I assume its 7/25."

Sun, June 22, 2008 - 5:58pm EDT"Randy, I know its a long shot but if Joe Smith happens to make this team or even the practice squad i have to get a Yakima Mavericks jersey. Now that would be a classic."

Sun, June 22, 2008 - 6:54pm EDT"I know u never said pay him...but if ur posts weigh heavily towards that solution. If there is a circus, it will be one sided this season (on Baker)...I'm gonna draw little Green Devil Horns & a Curly Mushtache on your Picture Frank, Trust me. The Jets Den will be Rockin."

Sun, June 22, 2008 - 8:46pm EDT"How in the world can anyone who has watched the Jets over the last 3 to 4 years think Baker is a good player? I will rejoice when he is gone.. He cannot fight off a defender at all. I am sure he has the highest ratio of interceptions when thrown to of all Jets and probably of all players in the NFL. And his character stinks too it turns out. We'll be lucky to get a 4th --probably a 6th "

I really hope Tangini can some how save face and work soemthing out with Baker since the team at this point would be clearly better with him on it. Meanwhile a few names on the Free agent list that I would explore if they haven't decided to retire are Kyle Bradyand Stephen Alexander. Alexander is intriguing even though he was on IR last yr"
