06/13 — We're learning more about the Jets' draft choices as the days go on. And among the new things we've heard about first-round TE Dustin Keller is that he takes care of his mother.
In a story today on the Website of the Journal & Courier in West Lafayette, Ind., it's revealed that Keller and his four brothers surprised their mom, Maureen, as all left church on Mother's Day and walked up to a new silver BMW in the parking lot.
"I said, 'Mom, you'd look really nice in that,' " Dustin told his hometown newspaper this week from the Jets' training facility. "She said, 'Yeah.' So I pulled out the keys and handed them to her. She just looked at me, with no idea what was going on. I told her, 'It's yours.'
"And she started bawling and crying. And that lasted for like two hours."
Eugene Parker, Keller's Indianapolis-based agent (who, you'll recall, also represents Curtis Martin) helped make arrangements for the car to be delivered to the single mother of five from the Pittsburgh dealership of former Purdue and NFL star Rod Woodson.
Keller also had some observations about the minicamps and OTAs he's participated in, saying he's "very happy with what's happened so far" but adding that he still has room for improvement so he's working on that "and getting better every day." You can read the jconline.com story here.
Another thing we've heard about Keller, from this story and also from word around Weeb Ewbank Hall, is that he's a lights-out Ping-Pong player, so good that most of his Boilermakers teammates stopped playing him and already making headway against his Jets teammates.
We'll have more on that as the off-season and training camp proceed.

Sat, June 14, 2008 - 9:52am EDT"Randy, thanks for the update. Keller looks & sounds like a good kid. Can't wait for training camp. Looks like we have a good group of receivers with addition of Keller & Stuckey. Once we solidify whose playing QB, we should be ok. Keep up the good work Randy and keep the updates coming Randy. "
Frank Said:
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 10:52am EDT"Right Dunnie logic dictates what you say...however the way Tangini in their infinite wisdom and history of mis-casting players it won't be surprising to see him in there as a blocking TE. Besides once the Baker situation completely unravels we will have Keller and Bubba who hasn't played a full season in 3 years and is on the downside of his career. Who is going to be our TE? Ira Happy Fathers Day"

Randy Lange Said:
"Xavion, good to have you back. The Browns game is in Cleveland so you should contact the Browns' ticket office. Jets training camp will remain open to the public for two weeks following the Browns game, but check with newyorkjets.com at that time for practice days and times."

Sat, June 14, 2008 - 3:13pm EDT"Kellen Clemens to Dustin Keller, has a nice ring to it. I look forward to seeing DK win the rookie of the year award. His height, hands & speed will make him a great target, specially in the red zone. I expect KC will win QB job. The extra zip he puts on the ball will give defenders less time to react. Improved OLine will help KC by giving him time to find target. Go Jets!"
Patrick Said:
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 3:23pm EDT"He seems like a good person and I really like what this kid will bring to the table as far as being able to the strecth the field and create mismatches but honestly we need baker. Like Frank stated earlier Bubba Franks hasnt put together a full season in a long time so if he gets injured then what? I would much rather see Keller catching TD's than trying to prove he can block. "

Randy Lange Said:
"We'll have a practice schedule page that you can get to off the home page of newyorkjets.com when the time comes for camp to open."

Special thanks to Danny Woodhead for helping my son overcome his initial shyness. He's got a new fan in me and my son. Watch out for Keller, he's got the magic."

Sat, June 14, 2008 - 5:17pm EDT"dustin keller looks to have that special surprise that the jets have been looking for so as all the offensive rookies but i do not think that the jets will fully exploit their talent, take a look at what new orleans done with colston all i can say is wow we need one of them to step up lyk harris on defense last year. "
Ira Said:
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 6:04pm EDT"Ist of all Franks hasn't missed as many games as everybody says. 04 and 06 he played 16 each. In 05 10 games and in 07 8 games plus the 2 playoff games. He will need to rotate with another TE. I could see Jeb Putzier a Jet this season. The Seahawks drafted J. Carlson in the 2nd rd and he is expected to start. W. Heller is their #2 TE and i can see them listening to offers for Putzier or cut him."

Tue, July 8, 2008 - 12:07pm EDT"Dustin Keller is a great young man. He's found success w/o letting it go to his head and has apparently kept his priorities in order. I already knew he had class by the way he treated my small child , and he proved he still has it by his gift to his mother (who is pretty great herself). I am thrilled to have him as a role model for my son."
