05/22 — Today's Jets OTA (Organized Team Activity) was impacted by a little EWA (Extreme Weather Activity). Midway through the session, a foreboding patch of dark gray clouds opened up over the Jets' upper grass practice field. For 10 minutes, it poured cold rain and even hail.
Reporters and even some team personnel headed for cover. I tried to tough it out but, wearing the same clothes that I expected to wear to tonight's Taste of the NFL event in Manhattan, I was fearful of showing up in a wetsuit. I can report this afternoon that my socks are still clammy but the backs of my pants legs and my raincoat have dried nicely.
Needless to say, the Jets practiced on under the watchful eye of head coach Eric Mangini, who barely flinched despite wearing short sleeves and short pants.
And rookie free agent Danny Woodhead got a taste of what the Mangini Jets are about. Woodhead, the nifty, shifty one from Division II Chadron State, muffed a couple of punts in the rain. No excuses: two penalty laps for the NCAA's all-time leading rusher.
Before this outburst, it hadn't been raining, but perhaps Kellen Clemens induced the precip with a skyscraping pinpoint pass to Laveranues Coles. Clemens let fly for Coles, streaking down the sideline with Darrelle Revis in coverage and Kerry Rhodes ranging over to help. No matter — the ball hit Coles perfectly over Revis and he got both feet down before tumbling out of bounds for what would've been a 35-yard completion.
Chad Pennington, working with the second team for this session, had his prettiest pass of the day in 7-on-7s with a zippy throw over the middle to WR David Clowney, who grabbed the on-the-money ball in traffic and maneuvered away for some YAC.
After the rain stopped and partly cloudy bright blue skies moved in, both QBs were put under pressure in 11-on-11 work by a strong outside rush. Clemens tucked the ball and was forced to take off up the middle on one play while Pennington was harried into an incompletion.
Tight end Bubba Franks stepped up again, not as often as he did a week ago with his multiple TD catches, but with one excellent drop-and-scoop for a low Clemens ball. A few plays later, Clemens tried to find Franks again but this time LB Eric Barton was there to break up the pass.
WR David Ball had one nice trademark leaping snatch on one pass from QB Brett Ratliff, but on a second, he couldn't hold on as rookie CB Dwight Lowery provided the distracting coverage.
Jesse Chatman was looking for running room off guard but it looked as if NT Kris Jenkins was clogging the middle — "You just see a massive wall in front of you. There's not a lot of wiggle room at all," Pennington said of Jenkins' 360-pound presence. So Chatman tried to bump the run outside, but LB David Bowens was there to grab Chatman (but there's no tackling in these sessions).
The practice ended as usual with Mike Nugent and rookie FA Mark Myers kicking field goals. Nugent drove two 48-yarders into the wind and through the uprights. But then Mangini brought the team in and made one of his proposals. To win the secret prize, the players needed Nugent to hit from 58 yards. But the wind proved too strong, the ball didn't make it over the crossbar, and this time at least the players didn't get a bonus from their coach.
Postpractice vignettes included the new offensive line — holdovers D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold and Brandon Moore and new guys Alan Faneca and Damien Woody — doing a Sporting News photo shoot at one end of the field, while Clemens and Pennington threw 30-yard passes back and forth to each other on the other end.

"NYJBenz10, the throw was in the 15-to-20-yard range. It's hard to tell exactly how far from field level. It seems to me that Chad's throws have some velocity on them right now."

Thu, May 22, 2008 - 8:35pm EDT"Hey Randy alot of things ive read said that Kellens deep ball was a thing of beauty and that he placed it perfectly over the outside shoulder of Laveranues Coles. I really don't want chad starting at QB he has lost all of what was left pf his physical attributes. Randy how has the maturation of Kellen been in camp since the end of last year?"

Thu, May 22, 2008 - 9:06pm EDT"What would it take for Mangini to let Revis return one punt in a real game this year? Anyone see his video's on youtube? I like the in depth reports, it's nice to know the Jets are working already to fix last years blunder on offense. I know if Penny starts, he will destroy our running game. No more motion and 5wr sets, let's see some POWER I AND DOUBLE TIGHT SETS!!! I want 3rd down conversions!"
Ira Said:
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 7:18am EDT"Former Jet M. Tuiasisopo has gone back to the Raiders. Maybe the Jets will get to see him play when the go against the Raiders this season. Jason Taylor's days are numbered as a Dolphin and i have a funny feeling he will be traded to the Pats."
Frank Said:
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 9:01am EDT"Ira there is no way Taylor gets traded to the Pats. Parcells is not going to want to face him 2 times a year for the next few years. He will get traded to the Skins, Eagles or Chargers who have already inquired. I'm hearing Clemens is looking sharp. "
Ira Said:
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 11:04am EDT"Frank, Why wouldn't Pioli [his son in law] over pay for him? Parcells is in a major rebuilding mold and the next 2 years he isn't concerned about catching the Pats. He would rather have the draft picks. If the Pats offer Parcells the best deal Taylor will dance all the way up to New England."
HDR Said:
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 11:59am EDT"It's good to hear that Chad and Kellen are helping each other during this competition. I think Chad is a real stand up guy and although I believe kellen would give this team the best chance to win. I think Chad does belong on this team and would make a excellent bkup to kellen. We all know u need 2 QB. and in Chad we would have the best bkup QB in the league.. and no QB worries. "
HDR Said:
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 12:09pm EDT"I Think chad is better coming off the bench. He could also help kellen as a player coach. It just makes since.. Frank, don't be suprised. Ira is right, The Pat have a nack for picking up players from teams within their divison. And if the price is right, Parcell will deal him without a second thought. Hey Randy, How does the new O-Line Look? How good a season we have really depends on them !!!!!!"
Frank Said:
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 2:01pm EDT"Ira add Tampa to the Taylor sweepstakes. The Pats do not overpay for anything or anyone. It's also about a 2nd round draft pick besides there is so much acrimony between Parcells and Taylor he is not going to want to be shown up twice a year. Parcells and his offspring hate to trade in the division. I don't see it happening."
Frank Said:
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 3:10pm EDT"I heard a Faneca comment that I love. He said " we look good on paper we'll see if it translates on the field. In Pitt we did not look good on paper but we got it done." My kinda guy no excuses just git'r done. Tangini is definitely on the hot seat this year regardless of what anyone tries to spin."
Big A Said:
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 4:34pm EDT"Frank, I gotta agree with you on this one. The Pats might pick him up if he were to get cut (although he would never clear waivers), but not necessarily trade and over pay for him. Free agents from other AFC East teams, yes..."
Ken Said:
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 1:46am EDT"RANDY, how does the JETS Blocking look like on the Offense? Like I said before, OFFENSE is about the OFFENSIVE LINE and doing the BASIC things. And OFFENSE is about BLOCKING! If the Offensive Line and the WRs do their job and BLOCK properly, you would NEVER need to throw the FootBall. Ask VINCE LOMBARDI about the importants of executing the BASICS."
CEDRIC Said:
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 2:06am EDT"I like the fact that the O-line is getting to know each other and work on their cemistry, speaks volumes...Frank, quit stating the Obvious about Tangini being on the Hotseat, its getting old, i think u may need new material."
Drew Said:
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 9:27pm EDT"Chad and Kellen were having a catch 30 yards apart?? Was KC catching Chad's balls on a bounce?? Just kidding Chad...... Yes Frank we look better on paper and yes Tangini needs that to translate into wins. Glad to see alot has changed in the week I was away. "
Frank Said:
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 10:29am EDT"Hey Cedric did I tell you that Tangini is on the hot seat this year?... Drew no more excuses bring your laptop.... Actually the rumor was Chad was throwing to Randy at 10 yards and Randy was tossing it back to Clemens."
CEDRIC Said:
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 11:01am EDT"Frank, i will now refer to you as Obvious Guy, in reference to that old TV show "Blind Date". The truth is Kellen was catching passes from the ball machine, while Chad was reloading it."

Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 11:11am EDT"John Dail, 1 who is this bigger arm Chad has beat over the years that you say Brooks Ballinger or Ray Lucas please. Also if you can throw 20 yards you have a better arm than Chad, you dont detect haters you see guys that want to win "
