05/22 — Fresh off his second big Charity Bowl event the night before, Jets head coach Eric Mangini welcomed reporters to their second OTA availability this morning with some news on which of his players will and will not be participating at today's practice.
Mangini said top draft pick Vernon Gholston is the only one of the Jets' six draft picks that is not in attendance.
"The rule is you can't come in till your class graduates or you complete your finals and have permission from your university," the coach explained. "Vernon, being an early out [junior-eligible], is held to the graduation date. It'll be a little while till we see him."
It was thought that fourth-round CB Dwight Lowery from San Jose State might also miss this week, but Lowery is on hand and is expected to work along with the rookies and vets.
Mangini also said S Abram Elam is back with the team after a stay with his family in Florida following the shooting death of his older brother. "Our thoughts and prayers are always with him," said the coach. "It's great having him back."
Questions dealt mostly with QBs and TEs. One question dealt with the theory published in at least one outlet last week that the Jets privately are pulling for Kellen Clemens to defeat Chad Pennington for the starting quarterback job.
"I don't know what published report that was or who said that," he said. "I can tell you that I make the decision and I'm pulling for the player who gives us the best chance to win."
So a specific report that stated that wasn't accurate?
"That's not accurate," he said. "At all."
There was nothing new on the Chris Baker front, although the coach said he'd be calling C-Bake soon.
"I'll see where he is with the information, see what he needs, try to catch him up," Mangini said. "My goal is to get Chris as ready as possible for when he does arrive."
Mangini was asked about his "No. 2" corner — the one opposite Darrelle Revis — in general and Justin Miller specifically.
"I like corners," said the one-time New England secondary coach. "Hank [Poteat] has got quite a bit of experience, and obviously David Barrett does. I really liked the things Justin had done prior to getting hurt and his approach has been outstanding."
He likened Miller's return to that of DT Sione Pouha, who lost all of 2006 to an injury, then returned last year and became a solid contributor on the D-line.
And lest you thought Revis might be resting on his All-Rookie Team laurels, Mangini said that's not the case.
"And Darrelle has really made some strides that I've seen here early on. Darrelle's very, very conscientious and mature for such a young player."
We'll have another couple of Radar entries today, one from Eric Allen, who was at the Charity Bowl on Wednesday night, and another one from me after practice, plus a news story out of practice. But now the rain has stopped and I hear the music blasting from the practice field. It's time for another OTA.

I have never heard about that rule that you have to wait for your class to graduate(may be a while since he left as a junior) or complete your finals. I dont know what completing your finals have to do with reporting to your job. Very exited about this year. Happy with the improvement to both lines and thats where the winning begins, imo."
Randy Lange Said:
"BriGuy, there have been NFL and NCAA rules in place for a number of years that restrict when rookies can report to their new teams, although the rules can get modified from one year to the next."

Thu, May 22, 2008 - 12:58pm ET"I am the biggest CP fan ever but makes since that Mgt. would like for KC to be the starter so they don't get mud on their face and that is fine! My biggest concern is that they don't give CP a fair shake or that desire clouds their decision making. CP would be the first to tell you play KC if he is better but I think with the revamped line CP will thrive! Go jets !!!!!!!! Go Chad !!!!!!!!!!"
Patrick Said:
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 1:03pm ET"For being a career journeyman Poteat played well last year despite not having any kind of pass rush to help him or the other corners out. My prediction is Poteat will start opposite of Revis this year and they both will have good numbers with an improved pass rush. I still want to see J Miller out there and see what he can do but I would think his cover skills are still a little rusty. "

Thu, May 22, 2008 - 6:18pm ET"Great Article Randy, I hope Elam & Poteat wins the Starting jobs, I think this team has alot of depth & they dont have alot of drop off between 1st & 2nd string."
Row Said:
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 9:00pm ET"Elam was one of the few bright spots last year. I really liked several hits he put on receivers, especially in the bengals game. Also remember him in the backfield a lot during runs. He reminds me of a young steve atwater, hence the number. I will be wearing his jersey when I go to the next Jets game! What is this hush hush deal with signings? Biggest draft acquisition of the year & we get nothing"
Jesse Olavarria Said:
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 9:51pm ET"I know that nothing is written in stone however, the rumor is that Jason Taylor may be on the trading block. Do the Jets think they could use a player like Taylor in their arsenal. My guess would be YES. Any chance of getting him on the roster?"
Scott Said:
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 4:15pm ET"Jesse: I would love to see Jason in Green & White, but I think Bill Parcells will deal him to an NFC team that he would face every three years. If he goes to the NFC East, The Fins may never face Taylor. Steve B, I am with you on CP; he's the only person I root for since Ewing retired, but maybe KC is where we need to go to be a powerhouse. CP winning it all would be a great story, though."
Rick Roucoulet Said:
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 8:40am ET"I think we're not looking so hot on CBs. God forbid if anything happens to REVIS.... An area i believe should be focused on NOW over ALL"
Big A Said:
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 10:39am ET"Rick, I think our corners aren't really as bad as they seemed last year. I think without an effective pass rush, they are stressed beyond effectiveness. I do believe we will have a much better pass rush and we will see more hurries leading to more INTs for our secondary."
GIOVANNI Said:
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 2:18pm ET"RANDY I HAVE BEEN EARING THAT PLAYERS THAT HAVE BEEN PLAYING FOR YEARS ARE MAD ABOUT THE ROOKIES THAT HAVE BEEN COMING IN AND GETTING LOTS OF NONEY AND THEY HAVE NOT PROVEN ANYTHING YET,FOR EXAPLE APLAYER SIGNS A NEW CONTRACT AND THEY GET MAYBE,A $10 MILL GUARANTE MONEY FOR A 6 YEARS CONTRACT,BUT MATT RAYN GOT $26 MILL GUARANTE,DO YOU THINK IN THE FEUTER THEY WILL CHANGE THAT,OR IT IS TO LATE."
Randy Lange Said:
"Giovanni, we shall see. That's one of the issues that led the NFL owners to opt out of the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the players last week."
Josh Said:
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 6:12pm ET"Personally CB's arent the only position the Jets should think about. When we traded Vilma we opened a hole in our 3-4. David Harris is an exceptional athlete but who is really going to fill Vilma's old gap. Brad Kassell isnt the best fit and maybe if Mangini wants it could put Gholston there. At the end of this year trade Shaun Ellis(unless he shines)For like a round 2 pick and slide Gholston down"
Patrick Said:
Wed, May 28, 2008 - 12:22pm ET"Josh, we are much better off with Harris in the 3-4 alignment. It took him no time at all to start making plays whereas Vilma was still ineffective after two years in this system. Dont forget about Eric Barton. Kassel is a special teamer not a starter at MLB. Starting LB's: Harris and Barton at MLB and a Mixture of Gholston, Pace, and Thomas at OLB. I hear we may be going after Rosey Colvin too"
