05/15 — Eric Mangini welcomed reporters back to the first availability to watch veteran players at an organized practice this morning. All the Jets vets are here for today's third OTA of the week, except, as the head coach stated at the top of his news conference, TE Chris Baker and S Abram Elam.
Baker was the first topic of interest for the media.
"I've talked to Chris and one of the things that's important to us that he stay current on information," Mangini said. "That's what we've been focused on, getting him new information and making sure he's up to date, giving him all the resources he needs to be successful when he's here."
There's no indication that Baker, staying away from voluntary workouts in a contract dispute, will arrive before the mandatory June 5-7 full-squad minicamp. But Mangini said it's his expectation to see C-Bake at that camp.
He was asked if he's fearful of the Baker impasse taking a Kendall-esque turn.
"Every situation is unique," the coach said. "Chris has been working at the information and we'll continue working on the football side of things. We've always had a good relationship. I like the things he's done, the progress he's made over the course of the time we've been here."
Elam, of course, has been excused for as long as he needs to be with his family in Florida after his brother was killed late last week.
"With Abe, obviously it's a very difficult time for him," Mangini said. "Organizationally and personally, our condolences go out to him and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."
The next major topic, no surprise, was quarterbacks. Mangini said Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens have entered their competition already, since the two had a coin flip at the start of this week to determine who would get the first reps with the first offense on day one.
"Chad called it and won. He got the first drill," the coach said with a smile, adding that with Clemens getting first reps Tuesday, today is Chad's turn again. "There's no other agenda with who takes the snaps today, I promise you."

Mangini also had a funny line on new DT Kris Jenkins: "He makes 360 look good. I wish I could say the same."
This week's OTAs are devoted to the veterans, new and old. But the Jets' rookie class by NFL rules is allowed to return to the Hofstra campus Friday and the rookies will start working with the veterans at OTAs next week.
We'll give you another report after practice and locker room this afternoon.

"Ira, from the sounds of it, the rookies will start to work with the vets Monday, and will no doubt be a focus for reporters at the next media availability next Thursday."

Thu, May 15, 2008 - 2:23pm ET"I really don't like this trading rep's thing with the QB's. We need a set QB with an offense built around him. With Kellen we can roll him out, try some unique sets with quick reads. With Chad we pretty much have to pocket pass with a TE and a FB keeping him on his feet. No 5 step drops for Chad. I do like the article Randy, thanks for the info on the offensive rushing TD's. GO JETS, GO BAKER!!!"

Thu, May 15, 2008 - 5:36pm ET"First of all my heart goes out to the Elam family, a death in the family is one of the hardest things to deal with. I have heard on the radio that Baker took a pay advance of around $800,000. If this is the case he needs to stop his whining and get his butt to ota's and do his job! Hopefully he will come to his senses because there is people waiting in the wings to take his job! Come on Chris!"

Thu, May 15, 2008 - 8:12pm ET"Whats up all J-E-T-S fans! Grew up on LI and now in NM(that's new mexico). What's up with Baker? He stinks! If we can get a 4th rounder I'll be jumping for joy! The guy has made a play or two but usually he's a bust. What about the game he couldn't keep his foot inbounds in the end zone? How many times does a throw to him end up with an INT? Too many! Dump his, slow, non-blocking, greedy butt!"

That guy is nothing but trouble and if the Pats want him, they can have him for as long as he is able to stay on the field. Chad Johnson I would have been interested in, Henry.... NO WAY!!!!"
playchad Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:45am ET"Row your wrong there is no problem with Chris Baker anytime he's had to play a bigger role in this offense he has delivered remember that game against the chiefs when he had over a 100 yards Chris is a solid tight end too bad he doesnt get the ball more he can produce if had the chance!!!"
Row Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 1:39pm ET"I said GO BAKER as in he deserves his money. I also stated previously how much I disliked drafting a TE in the first round, which IMO ruined our draft. I also stated his stats, including a comment on giving an average linebacker 20 mil in guaranteed money and not giving Baker the cash. Hey guys, if you look on the forum there's already a QB controversy. "
Mark Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 2:37pm ET"Randy, the Jets need to let Baker go now, he is the only guy they trust at the position right now but he wants more money. His agent is Schwartz the same as Revis he will hold him out until the reg season. C Bake deserves more money but the Jets have no more money. So whats the resolution we have to move on."

Harris and Barton should take Jenkins to dinner once a week as soon as the season starts. It will be interesting to see how the rookies do with the veterans on Friday for the 1st time. Will they force feed Gholston or work him in slowly?"
