File Under: draft, Mike Tannenbaum, Darrelle Revis, four, picks, 2007 NFL Draft, Thomas Jones, David Harris
04/28 — This is already one of the weirdest drafts in Jets history. Two major Day One tradeups to get two of the top defensive players available in CB Darrelle Revis and LB David Harris, yet the rest of the cupboard is virtually bare — just one sixth-rounder and one seventh-rounder in Sunday's final four rounds.
So many will look at the four selections and declare this draft so-so or thin or filled with mixed results. In fact, if the Jets don't acquire other picks Sunday, this would be the fewest selections in one draft in franchise history.
Except that's not the way GM Mike Tannenbaum sees it. He was asked late Saturday, before he advised reporters there wouldn't be any more deals the rest of the night, about the prospect of having only a four-pick draft.
"With Thomas Jones," Tannenbaum corrected, "that would be five."
Jones is the muscular tailback who got "Trader Mike" started back in March, when he came to the Jets in the March trade with the Chicago Bears. The Jets swapped second-round picks with the Bears that day, and in fact used that 63rd selection from the NFC's Super Bowl representative to get the Harris deal done with Green Bay.
“It just is kind of how things have played out," Tannenbaum said. "I feel very comfortable getting Darrelle Revis in the first and David Harris in the second. I understand we had to pay a price to get them, but we thought for our organization, given where we were and what we wanted to accomplish, we were willing to pay the price for those two players.
And that's as good a note as any to end the first full day of Randy's Radar. Enjoy the two rookie defensive standouts — and one veteran tailback — who have arrived. And you probably don't have to set the alarm Sunday.

I wonder what the Jets will trade for 2nd day picks? I wonder if there is a large defensive tackle on the horizon and o-linemen for the future?"

I think the team would have been better off keeping the four first day draft choices, selecting quality players and creating more depth. My sense is that management panicked unnecesarily."

Sun, April 29, 2007 - 5:09pm EDT"You have to love the Darrelle Revis pick and even the Harris pick. But, was it worth the price? That remains to be seen. The draft was somewhat deep at CB which was a high priority. I think we needed a DE (even though we signed a lot in free agency) and a WR. I think we shoulda kept the picks but..."

Revis fits our defensive scheme perfectly, and Harris will be a contributor for years to come. I also agree with Tannenbaum, how he said Jones was like a 5th pick. "
