File Under: Eric Mangini, Woody Johnson, rookie minicamp, Vernon Gholston, Dustin Keller
05/01 — Just to let you know we haven't forgotten that we have a rookie minicamp upon us, I can report to you that the rookies — six draft choices headed by first-rounders Vernon Gholston and Dustin Keller, 10 undrafted free agents and an unspecified number of tryouts — have been filtering into Weeb Ewbank Hall during the day today. The newest members of the Green & White have a team meeting with head coach Eric Mangini tonight.
And beginning Friday, they practice as pros.
The schedule for the media provides midday access to the new players both Friday and Saturday. Portions of practice will be open to reporters Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Jets owner Woody Johnson is expected to attend the Friday session and to be available for reporters.
Mangini will have two news conferences, both available live on newyorkjets.com and then archived on our site's multimedia home. The first is Friday at 4:30 p.m. and the second is Saturday at noon.
There is no media availability Sunday and after that day's activities the players will return to their homes and their colleges until many return in June.
The team still has not released the list of its undrafted free agents and tryout invitees, but we will have an avalanche of information for you beginning Friday with the names, stories on the FAs broken down into offense and defense, plus features and Radar entries over the next two days from me and Eric Allen.
As the TV anchors always say, even though it's not true, we'll see you tomorrow.

"JohnnyJet, we aren't releasing any names until Friday. Sorry."

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 8:39pm ET"Hi Randy, Hopefully we will find some diamonds in the rough this year. A buddy of mine told me about Bill Carey, a Hybrid DE - OLB from Ball State who is trying out for the team. He has great instinct, can take position from the up or 3 point stance, has a non stop motor and flies to the balls. Let's see if he can make the transition. Go JETS !"

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 9:15pm ET"Randy, I thought that they usually have a full team mini-camp the week after the rookie camp. But you said they don't come back until June. Did they change things up this year? "
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, the last time the Jets had a full-squad minicamp immediately after the draft was in Herm Edwards' last year at the helm, 2005."
Kevin Seaman Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:01pm ET"Randy - check out Brown U's Paul Raymond, a very fast wide-out who can catch the ball...signed on as a free agent...quiet and very smart kid out of Florida...you will have to look for him as he is 5'9""

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 12:28am ET"I have been trying to be positive as of late as I was happy with the draft, but I just read the Ellis article on the site and was reminded of how much I hate the 3-4 and what a bad idea it was to implement with D-Rob and Vilma. Take a look at the article and read Ellis' comments and you can see what he thinks of the 3-4 and how it affects the players. Bad idea. (I'm trying to let it go)"

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 3:25am ET"All the info I can find on the FAs we are bringing in has me a little disappointed. I realize they can go where they want, but after Caulcrick and Woodhead, I was hoping for some OLmen and maybe even Erin Henderson the LB from Maryland. What I'm finding is more WRs and RBs. It looked like there were some really good linemen who didn't get drafted."

"I haven't done any research, uncle joe, to know if the average of the top 10 at my position in the NFL is a good deal or not, but I will report to training camp regardless."

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 9:57am ET"Pete, we finally got Round Pegs for Round Holes now, and the 3-4 has produced a few Championsip teams, Pats & Steelers, and other successful franchises like the Chargers, so it can work, i believe you will see a change now, Keep the faith PETE"
Drew Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:17am ET"Great piece on Barton, Randy....Barton has his limitations but reminds me of when we had B Cox stirring things up for us. He brings an attitude to the team that no other Jet player seems to have...... I know alot of people are running their mouth in regards to Gholsten. All of a sudden this guy comes to the jets and he is a coach killer and or bust. I hope this guy just dominates from Day 1. "
Drew Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:29am ET"Pete... Remember that DE's in the 3-4 usually do not put up big sack numbers (which = $$) So you to take what Ellis says with a grain of salt. He went from a 8-10 sack guy to a 3-4 sack guy who takes on multiple blocks. He cleary would rather play 4-3. The stars of this team are now Harris,Rhodes,Revis, hopefully Pace& Gholsten... not Ellis. Sounds like a little sour grapes to me for him."
Ira Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:32am ET"Drew i agree Barton has been overlooked by many fans. He has been a solid player since he came to the Jets. I think with the additions of Pace and Gholston to Harris, Thomas, Bowens and Barton this group will be very effective and teams will have a tuff time matching up with these guys. GO JETS!!!!"
tom Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:37am ET"hey randy do you know if any veterans are coming to rookie mini camp i remember last year a few did "
Randy Lange Said:
"Yes, tom, there will be several first-year veterans participating in the minicamp."
tom Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:55am ET"can you say the names of which first year veterans?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Update: The first-year veterans who are at this minicamp are QB Brett Ratliff, OL Robert Turner, Clint Oldenburg and Stanley Daniels, WR David Ball, P Jeremy Kapinos and DB Etienne Boulay."
Frank Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 11:34am ET"Pete you are 100% right and I am in the same boat as you. I knew this was going to happen with Ellis and it's going to get worse. I said it since last year he is another one who is playing out of position and should have been traded. To take Cedric's words and put the proper spin on them. Tangini took over a 4-12 team and brought in an entirely new scheme. Just like the Phins and Chiefs did they.."
Frank Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 11:41am ET"...should have had the guts to trade all the guys they finally did for much better compensation than what we got and drafted the players they needed for their system. It's laughable that Cedric would suggest that Tangini has only had to tweak the roster. They needed a major overhaul for their system from day 1. So far they have been abysmal with making talent and roster evaluations. I said it..."
Albert R. Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 11:44am ET"I expect the interaction between the new Jets, Pace & Ghoulson, specifically, with the Jets revised, upgraded line will lead to benefits for both sides of the ball. Looking forward to a winning season!!"
Frank Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 11:44am ET"...several times already this is a huge year for Tangini they better make this work. There will be plenty of talented ex-Jets playing in the league and their own roster to make a critical evaluation. Time will tell and we all better hope it works or we will have to start over again."
Dr. Scott Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 12:13pm ET"mangini is a poor coach. we had so much talent for the 4:3. 1st round picks; pro bowlers. but mangini only knows 3:4. how does a coach come in and not put in a D for the players here? he wasted 5 years of top defensive picks and probowlers in a scheme 3:4 that is not appropriate. now he starts over wtih his "own people" as he said. now we see. he has his guys. lets see how he does. "
Rick Roucoulet Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:56pm ET"Hey Dr. Scott: As bad as that sounds, I think you may be on to something - I hope your not right - But I think I was going there too."
HDR Said:
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 6:28am ET"Hey Dr. Scott, Please don't jump on Manginus. He is really doing a pretty good job, Both He and Mr T. have had three really good drafts, (Three more that the previous regime)They've bought in D-Brick, Mangold,Washington,B smith,Harris and Revis, and this year Gholston and Keller. He is 14 and 16 in really two years of remolding this roster with good players who fit his system. At least "
MikeMc Said:
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 11:04am ET"If you don't give Mangini several years to develop his vision we will be back to square -1. He inhertited a 4-3 team made a run, tried to be competitive last year , he wasn't , now your seeing more of a overhaul, but the scheme hasn't changed. You can do alot of damage from the 3-4 and we will be better in the long run but we must lock up Mangini for 5 years not hot seat here ever again."
Rick Roucoulet Said:
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:52pm ET"Randy, I cant get an answer anywhere. I used to attend the JETS/GIANTS scrimmages in Albany NY during the summer. Does that take place anymore? What a great day: Watch the offense, they break & we go to the CROSSGATES mall for lunch & then head back to catch the Defense - Also able to get some autographs..."
Randy Lange Said:
"Rick, I haven't seen this summer's training camp schedule, but Eric Mangini has held a Green & White Game instead, at the Meadowlands in 2006 and at Fordham last year. The only times the Jets and Giants scrimmaged at Albany were during the 2004 and '05 camps."
