04/27 — We offer one last Draft 2008 blog to wrap up newyorkjets.com's coverage, this one about quarterbacks.
Specifically, Mike Tannenbaum and then Eric Mangini came down after Round 7 was in the books to give their views of the draft. But both men were asked about the Jets' QB depth chart. Nothing much has changed in how they view the battle ahead, although the head coach and the GM both commented about the remade depth chart now that Erik Ainge has joined Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens as well as Brett Ratliff.
"I like Chad and I like Kellen," Mangini said when asked if the drafting of Ainge in the fifth round rather than another QB higher showed confidence in his holdover veterans. "And with Erik now, it's going to be a good group. We'll see how Erik develops. It's going to take some time, but I think he'll fit in well in that room."
"We like both those guys and again, the best player will play," Tannenbaum said. "They'll both compete throughout the summer. And we've added another one in Erik and he'll be thrown into the mix as well and the best players will play. But with Chad and Kellen and an improved offensive line, we're looking for improvement in the offense this year."
Taking It to the Street
Both men excused themselves after roughly five-minute media sessions to get back upstairs "and sign some free agents."
That's what happens as soon as the draft is over as 32 sets of draft teams feverishly try to convince undrafted college players to come to their operation.
This year the Jets have a smaller number of slots for street FAs to fill. With no NFL Europa, there are no roster exemptions and all teams must go to camp with no more than 80 players. The Jets had 66 on their roster before the draft, added six the last two days and will cut one player — Tannenbaum wouldn't say who because the player hasn't been notified yet — leaving nine spaces available.
But Mike T wasn't changing his tune about the Jets still having the welcome sign on the doors to Weeb Ewbank Hall.
"If anybody's listening to this live," he said, referring to the streaming video of his news conference online, "we're the land of opportunity. We've had a lot of undrafted free agents make it here, be it Wallace Wright, Stacy Tutt, Rob Turner, Mike DeVito, so there's great opportunity here."
And that was one more subtle message that while the Jets have done a lot of work at reshaping their team for the season ahead, the process will continue through tonight, through June 1, through first and final cuts to add even more pieces to the Green & White puzzle.

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 9:13pm EST"Hi I have a very strong reason to believe the Jets are fed up with Kellen Clemens. Last year was his time to shine and he did nothing, actually he only shined in the 4th quarter of the baltimore game. I think the jets were expecting more from there second round pick from 2 years ago than 1 good quarter. I also feel that the jets QBs will be Chad pennington to mentor the young erik ainge."

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 9:26pm EST"Jets did ok w/ this year draft. The best pick was DE Veron Gholston out of Ohio state he will help out jerkins and harris. The worst pick was TE Dustin Piller out of purdue, the jets had a good chance to draft RB Ray Rice out of Rugeturs who would help out jones and washington or they could of drafted QB Chad Hemme out of Michigan. The other picks were ok. but they could drafted colt brennan"

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 9:35pm EST"Just read that Danny Woodhead did indeed sign a free agent contract with the Jets. An intriguing pick up given his stats and pro day numbers. Sub 4.4 speed and a bowling ball of a body. If anything maybe he can be return specialist or even a third down guy!"

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 9:43pm EST"i dont really know what wholes need to be filled. i think the team did a good job all off-season.the only thing now is to play out next season and se how the pieces stack up.well probaly need to replace Shaun Ellis and Brian Thomas.if things dont work out this season, then by the end of the next draft this team should be on its way. PATS are on the Decline.their draft was week."

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 10:14pm EST"I think that drafting Dustin Keller was a good idea. He is to big for Corners and is to fast for Linebackers. good pick and woodhead was pretty good also, i don't know about the Corner they drafted but what ever. LETS GO JET!"

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 10:17pm EST"I think the Jets did pretty good this year in the draft after the incredible free agents we added. Gholston should start right away he has all the physical tools and talent lets hope he pans out as just as strong worker. Dustin piller will start out as a third and long target but will learn blocking from bubba franks. Erik will be great after this seaso, next we need a playmaking running back."

McDuffie Clem. and E. Young Tenn. OG's. V. Hall Va. Tech, or E. Henderson Maryland as ILB's. D. Radovich USC is an OT. Hope we can snag a few of these guys, they might pan out and cost us very little."

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 11:03pm EST"Keller is a phenomenal athlete, I just don't think he was the right guy for the Jets, after signing Franks and still have Baker. Just makes me think Pennington is going to be the starter because TE are used for stretching the seam, which was Pennington's' forte. Though, as every moment goes by, I fall more in love with Ainge, 6'5" 225 lbs QB. 31 TD, 10 int. He is gonna be a great player someday."

Golston was a risky pick, but with all we've invested this year on free agents, he was a great insurance policy for the win now mentality. Tangini gets all the credit for taking a shot this year. Thanks for making it interesting!!!"

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 2:33am EST"Woodhead has a good chance to turn some heads. Here’s why: 6.9ypc / 25 TDs per season over his 4 year career. These #s are good for a 3rd Down / Goal Line RB at the least. Height could be an ADVANTAGE. DBs and LBs will not be able to locate this guy when he’s behind the o-line, When he avoids DTs, he’ll have an extra step every time. Great for a 3rd Down/Redzone back. Has Mangini work ethic"

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 8:25am EST"I think Gang Green did amazing in the draft and Danny Woody omg! For those who don't know this player he's one of the best running backs in the draft in my opinion! The man has a nice vertical, soft hands, 4.34 speed, benched 25 reps, and has Barry Sander moves to make defenders miss and take it to the house. Dustin Keller is the #1 TE in the draft and he's going to be a big key in the pass game!"

Hopefully Keller will pay off. I do think he was the best Recieving TE in draft but is he better than all the WR's that were there. Really confused about going with Aienge over Brennan, Hopefully I'm wrong, got to rute for hin now I guess. "

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:26am EST"The Jets 2 First Round picks addressed their 2 biggest needs. A pass rush and red zone offense - if they had either last year they would have won 5 more games. Gholston will set up many balls for Rhodes and Rieves to intercept and Keller will provide matchup nightmares for defenses."

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 12:12pm EST"everybody know i love gholston in a jets jersey but the second pick was very dump in two reason. why keller. keller is great by we could have gotten kenny phillps the safter to play beside kerry rhode and our defense would have been competed. we could have had kerry at the line of srimage more often making our run defense a pass rush better and we have 2 good TEs already, it was a very dum move"

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 12:41pm EST"In my oppinion the jets made a great move by sighning undrafted free agent Jehuu Caulcrick. With his size(6' 250lbs) and speed 4.5 40, he is the short yardage back the jets have been looking for. He set a school record at Michigan State with 21 touchdowns in a season so with his size and speed his momentum will atleast get him a couple of yards."

The oppenents D-line does not make mistakes. This is the Pros. You can't expect any QB throw the ball when they are consistently chased down. No RB can makeI If the O-line can't make a hole. Nice draft for the linage both D and O"

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 2:29pm EST"Hey Tom, insanity would have been drafting Brennan. You can throw all those awesome stats out the window. He is the product of an offensive system that allowed him to throw the ball all over the place. Kind of like the BYU qb's of the 70's and 80's. If he were in the SEC he would have been nowhere near that impressive. Ainge could develop into a starter, Brennan career clip board holder."

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 2:36pm EST"JRonald I don't know where you saw the Jets signed Caulcrick, but that is the greatest!!! Of all the undrafted names, his was the first one that jumped out at me. This guy could potentially be a GREAT blocking/short yardage FB, with the speed to do some damage occaisionally. AWESOME!!"
Mike Said:
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 3:01pm EST"The draft proves once again that the Jets are more interested in the status quo than a championship. Gholsten is a nice pick but McFadden would have changed everything. The Jets worked the draft to get Namath and they should have worked the draft to get McFadden. I don't know about the rest of you fans, but I was hoping for at least another Corner or Safety to help out weak passing defense. I'm hoping for a strong season, and what will lead us will be our front 7... but those other 4 behind them better be TOPS!"

Gholston is the safest pick we could have made. We need him to pin his ears back and rush the passer on third down and that is what he does. If he never turns into a complete LB and has a mediocre work ethic he will still be all right."
Pete Said:
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 7:26pm EST"The knock on him is that he takes plays off and has a bad work ethic. 14 sacks is 14 sacks. He won't take the play off on third and long and that is all we need with Pace and Thomas. He can also line up as a DE in nickel and dime packages. Great, immediate impact pick! Keller gives us a good option on a team with QB questions. Keller will be in the slot with Baker at TE. We did draft a WR!"

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 9:29pm EST"Hey I watched almost every game with this Henry guy at KU being from KS and he is gonna help out the green a bunch, and I was definately happy to hear about signing Woodhead, I remember a piece I heard on him comparing him to Emmitt, wouldn't that be a nice suprise. I think Keller will be all right but they should have taken Jordy Nelson from KS-State, this guy is gonna be amazing just watch."

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 3:28am EST"Marco the Jets aren't cutting Chad, starter or not. They have no one else at the moment. Clemens has all of half a season under his belt. Chad is going nowhere unless they find a good vet to take his place. Doesn't make much sense to bring in a vet as a mentor who also has to learn our offense."

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 3:06pm EST"I still don't understand the Dustin Piller pick. When are the JETS going to get a WR that TALLER than 6'3? Who is the JETS kidding. Dustin Piller is a WR! Dustin Piller is 6'2 and 242 pds who CAN'T BLOCK. Who ever heard of a NFL TE that was so small? And the JETS actually traded down to get Dustin Piller. I SURE hope Dustin Piller is a good NFL player."
Ken Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 3:34pm EST"This is what I don't understand. CHRIS BAKER is scheduled to earn $683,500 in 2008. And DUSTIN KELLER, the TE/WR will sign a deal that guarantees him more than ($5 million). So the JETS don't want to pay the more experienced player, who is a BETTER blocker and is a REAL TE, a measly $683,500..but the JETS are willing to pay a ROOKIE, with NO NFL experience, who can't BLOCK $5 MILLION. HUH??!!"
Canadian Jet fan Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 3:54pm EST"Why not try playing with 2 starting quarterbacks? Chad and Kellen are different enough that they could complement each other very well, depending on the opponent or the objective (Chad in 2' drills, KC for the long play or scrambling). Here in Canada, it worked awfully well with the Ottawa Roughriders when they played both Tom Clements (now QB coach with the Packers) and Condredge Holloway!"
patrick Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:16pm EST"I think that the jets did a masterful job in the draft. Dustin keller is the tightend that we were missing the past couple of years. He will stretch the field and create matchup problems that chris baker couldn't. If you look at all the dominant teams in the league they all have two things 1) a great tightend and 2) either great defenses or great pressure. Vernon gholston wil be dynamic.GOJETS"
CEDRIC Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:13pm EST"KEN, Baker's contract is 5.4million over 3years, and he had ONE good year out of 6 years he's been here. If he didnt like the contract he shouldnt have signed it. He's mad at Bubba 1 year contract. You can make everyone happy and they have paid everyone who deserves it (except leon washington, thats coming in 09). come on lets just get to camp without the complaint, it aint gonna change, accept it"
J4L Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:20pm EST"You can not start two quarterbacks in the NFL. It would be impossible for them to get there rythm down in a series, let alone in the game if they keep flip flopping. And the TE would have still been there in the second round, trading up was stupid. Even if he was gone we could have picked up a big time receiver that we have lacked for countless years now."
Johnny Cool Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:00am EST"I like our signing of undrafted RB Danny Woodhead. He was the NCAA's career rushing leader and ran the 40 yrd dash in 4.33-4.38. At 5'7" he's built like a brick house. He seems almost like a Jones-Drew clone. I only hope we give him a shot and if he plays anything like Jones-Drew, he would be a steal. "
josh Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 8:51pm EST"You all have a good QB in Ainge. Being a Tennessee fan ive watched him for 4 years. He's a hard worker and very smart. There will be some growing pains with him.David Cuttliffe who caosched Peyton and Eli says he's better than some QB's in the pros now. "

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 4:08pm EST"they need to end this QB question once and for all, they pulled chad out and gave it to kellen, yeah the o line had serious problems, no QB couldve done much better, I say stay with kellen he deserves an honest chance, go back to chad if we have to. then If its still an issue, go draft a #1 QB"
cliff Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 4:20pm EST"Start Chad? Are you INSANE???? He's done. His arm has had 2 shoulder surgeries. His arm strength was weak to begin with. It's now zero strength. He couldn't even throw the ball 10 yards accurately last year. Teams know he can't and are stocking up on the front line. All the great offensive linemen in the WORLD won't inprove a running game when the entire defense is packed into the front line."

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 11:39pm EST"I still don't understand why we passed up Andre Woodson and picked Eric Ainge. At least Woodson has an NFL arm. Another season with a staple of weak armed qb's. We won't ever be taken seriously in the league untill we find that qb. "Broadway Joe" we miss you."
Ray Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 3:41am EST"Nice choice Brian. Lets see, your DL likes to get suspended for stomping on peoples heads. Your former #1 pick and starting CB likes to get suspended for starting gun fights at strip clubs. And your new team unceremoniously dumped its vet qb (one of the good guys on the team) by locking him out of their facility. First Class all the way!! Don't let the door hit you on your way out."
Johnny Cool Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 4:10am EST"Its ez bn a monday morn QB but I had such high expectations for this yr's draft after such outstanding off-season free agency signings. I felt like after Gholston, we passed up so many players that would've fit perfectly in the positions I felt we needed to improve on. Tyrell Johnson FS (2nd), Jack Ikegwuonu CB (4th), Andre Woodson QB (5th), Marcus Monk WR (7th), Tommy Z FS, just to name a few. "
339 Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 7:50pm EST"We could speculate on the draft all day. Bottom line, Mangini got what he wanted for his 3:4 scheme. NO MORE EXCUSES! As for QB, just make a decision and get to work. And if we have another dismal season, let's get some new management to go with the new stadium!"
NYJ BENZ 10 Said:
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 3:00pm EST"I don't know why everyone has turned their back on Chad. The goes out and does what needs to be done to win the game. He had a terrible defense to start out the season and Just McCareins shouldve dropped another TD pass or two. If we're winning this season it's under Chad, anyone else is 8-8 at best."
stevemillerband2008 Said:
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 11:39am EST"Chad, has great aim, makes pretty good reads. needs to pump fake more, takes to much time on the play action to get into throwing position. If the shoulder is stronger this year he will be a better QB all around. With the push out rule now changed he will get his wide receivers killed if he continues to float the ball everywhere. He must throw faster and harder. The good news is that there is enough talent out there now to keep any defense on there toes. "
stevemillerband2008 Said:
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 12:48pm EST"Side note: Baker Stay put, don’t let your moth or your actions ruin your career there. I believe you have a lot of talent kid, good blocker and soft hands. I have liked you from the start, I will be saddened if you go somewhere else. Eric Ainge: Cant wait to see what you got in the pre season, NO offence I hope we don’t get to see you this year in the regular season. I do hope to see you next year! I’m Steve Miller and that’s what I think!"
