04/22 — First the draft was repackaged into 10-minute first rounds and two rounds the first day. Now this afternoon comes the report that Miami has agreed to terms on a five-year deal with Michigan tackle Jake Long to be the first pick of the 2008 NFL Draft.
What is the world coming to?
Not to worry, ESPN and NFL Network, there will still be plenty of drama in Saturday's Round 1. But this draft has taken on a different feel now that the Dolphins may have set a record by nailing down the top pick of the draft more than four days before they officially go on the clock. NFL.com is reporting that the Dolphins have scheduled a news conference for 1:45 p.m.
There was some intrigue early on in this process that the now Bill Parcells-led 'Fins might go shopping for an agreeable player and agent who would strike a predraft deal, and along those lines there were some rumors the 'Fish could have moved on to Vernon Gholston.
But those talks between Long agent Tom Condon and the new Parcells/Jeff Ireland negotiating team began to heat up Monday morning. And so, once the league approves the deal and the status switches from "agreed to terms" to "signed, sealed and delivered," the Rams at No. 2 will be on the clock. And the camp of Virginia DE Chris Long are thought to be singing "Meet Me in St. Louis, Louis."
If that's the Long and short of the top of this draft, Mel Kiper, then ESPN's draft guru, (along with a few other experts) is on the record having called it.
Kiper's mock draft on the crawl beneath the all-sports network's telecast of the Mets-Cubs game Monday night read like this: 1. MIA — Jake Long. 2. STL — Chris Long. 3. ATL — DT Glenn Dorsey. 4. OAK — RB Darren McFadden. 5. KC — G/T Branden Albert. 6. NYJ — DE/OLB Vernon Gholston.
The only wild card here is the Chiefs' pick of Albert, Virginia's swing O-lineman and C.Long's Cavaliers teammate, who has moved up on many boards past Boise State T Ryan Clady as the No. 2 tackle behind Jake Long in the draft. But if the Herms trade DE Jared Allen to the Vikings as is being reported, do they then jump into the Gholston market ahead of the Jets? (If, indeed, the Green & White are in the Gholston market.)
And who's to say what the Raiders will do? The only thing certain seems to be that a year after last year's long, drawn-out process to sign JaMarcus Russell, the Silver and Black aren't in the Matt Ryan market.
In any event, the Dolphins news conference is about to start.
Tuna Trivia Note
Jake Long is only the second offensive lineman taken with the top pick of the draft since 1970. Orlando Pace of Ohio State was the other, in 1997, and that was also made possible by Parcells, who was then in control of the Jets' football ops and traded that first pick to the Rams en route to dropping to No. 8 overall, where the Tuna tabbed LB James Farrior.

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 2:59pm EST"I think that Gholston will still be available @ six, because of the Chiefs needs on OL. If he isn't there, I would love to see us go for Keith Rivers"
Ira Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 3:11pm EST"Randy, Good point about Herm maybe looking at Gholston if they trade Allen. Herm has to see a lot of John Abraham in Gholston. Good speed rusher off the edge who could struggle against the run. Gholston appears to be faster and stronger than Abraham was coming out of college. Good feature on Leon. Randy keep on putting up RB material so fans can see we don't need McFadden. He is pure luxury! "

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 3:34pm EST"Ira ... could not have said it better myself (as a matter of fact I did say the same thing yesterday) pure luxury. Draft a beast on D. Or trade down for a WR or CB(Cromartie). OR trade down and take J Stewart for value and then draft for need with the xtra second round pick (two total). I am really not in love with any of the QBs this year."
Ira Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 4:03pm EST"Dunnie, Glad to see that we are on the same page. RB's do not win Super Bowls. DEFENSE does.!!!!! GO JETS!!!!"
Dean Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 4:04pm EST"Right on. McFadden scares the hell out of me too. If Gholston's not there;trade down for more picks."
zartan Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 4:50pm EST"i read in-between the lines, and now tell you guys.do not be surprised if McFadden goes earliest yes earliest at 14. i see now that no teams like this guy as a fetured back.and will not give up an impact player for a 2nd option player.Trust me on this.and for the guys that want him.what does he have that Leon does'nt. be realistic if you answer. Miami's going to draft Flacco so were out of luck ."
Xavion Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 4:59pm EST"Sorry for the Long Hiatus guys. Id rather have Gholston over Mcfadden but I am in No Way scared of taking Mcfadden at worst He becomes an upgrade of Brad Smith. At best he becomes a dominant game changing force he was in college and what AP is in minnesota. I think Mcfadden can be just as good as any recvr we would take in first rnd if not better. "
Frank Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 5:26pm EST"Not surprising J. Long was always my first choice before we signed Faneca and Woody. We must do what it takes to nail down either C.Long or Gohlston even if we have to trade up."
Drew Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 5:40pm EST"With Big Jake signing today there is a little more hope that either C Long or Gholsten will fall to 6.....Agree 1000 % Ira, If Allen gets dealt KC will have a ton of firepower in this draft. They can pick best available player at 5 and throw a huge monkey wrench into a dream draft for us. "
Frank Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 8:36pm EST"If in fact C.Long goes to the Rams we may need to move to #3 to get Gohlston. If Atlanta would be happy picking either Dorsey or Ryan one or both should be available at 6 assuming no other trades. I am convinced the Pats are eyeing Gohlston and will leapfrog the Jets to get him and we can't let that happen. The Pats have a long history of jumping our picks."
Tom Spicer Said:

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 8:58pm EST"that Leon can not run over anyone McFadden has a LT like stiff arm Leon does not have even 1 bit of the track record McFadden has he split time at FSU & is a 4th round pick that has worked out for us but to say what does McFadden have that Leon doesnt is crazy the question should be what does Leon have that McFadden doesnt"
mloria Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:14pm EST"I just read on a site that the Jets are discussing moving up to 2 to get Matt Ryan. I really don't know how I feel about that, I'm leaning toward calling it a big mistake. What do you all think?"
Charlie Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:15pm EST"Trust in Mangini, He has proven brilliant Draft savey. Dont worry about Herm, he'll probably draft a kicker or trade for a 4 yr TE... Whatever he does Im confident in what "Manginious" does, and our defensive backfield is only secure on the right side. Elam isnt tested and the CB2 spott is up for grabs. In a division with the likes of Moss, Welker and Reed, I need more security. Passruch will + ."
Xavion Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:48pm EST"Looks like we may be drafting Mcfadden after all unless we trade up to get gholston KC just Traded Jared Allen to MInn meaning they may now be in the Gholston Market"
JP Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 11:55pm EST"Agree with Ira on the McFadden "luxury" - stay put in the draft and try for Gholston or trade down if he is not available. On paper, we have an O-line, we have depth at running back with the signing of Chatman but TJ and Washington is all we are going to need. DE/LB and WR is what we need - I do not know why draft boards are showing us going for Matt Ryan now?? We have the Poped-blessed KC!"
Shaun Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:13am EST"Jake Long is off the board and Herm traded Allen so the Jets are going to end up trading down or taking a CB with the 6th pick."
CEDRIC Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 1:12am EST"The Allen deal includes a 1st and two 3rd round picks, I have a feeling that KC will draft Gholston first and grab an OL man with the Vikings pick, there is a smaller gap of talent in OL than within DE, so They wanna get the best player. For the RECORD, DO NOT TRUST ESPN ARTICLES!! Only trust ADAM SCHEIN and ADAM SCHEFTER,those fellas earn their Paycheck, john clayton N chris mortenson my foot!!"
Pete Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 1:17am EST"Let the games begin. Almost liked the idea of J. Long lining up at RT with the rest of the gang. I could rush for 1000 behind that group. Hope to get Long or Gholston but would absolutely HATE to see us trade up for either. You build through the draft and due to off season moves, we don't have to lose picks to reach for a player. We could even trade down to get WR, CB, LB/DE in first 2/3 rounds."
Pete Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 1:20am EST"I would even be all right with McFadden. It's been a long time since we had an explosive offensive player and he can break one any time he touches the ball. As Xavion said, he can play a very good RB, WR, and QB even if he never becomes a stud at any position. Make Jones the every down RB and get Mcfadden a handful of touches at various positions and on special teams. Doesn't have to be Jim Brown"
Ray Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:45am EST"Xavion, I would definitely go for that over giving up all of this years picks. But I really don't like trading up at all. In fact I would rather trade down and take a chance on Groves. But I really want to keep that second pick. "
Ray Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:57am EST"Well guys, KC sent Allen to Minn. So now what? I was hearing that the Rams were talking to C. Long. I really believe the Raiders will take McFadden. And now I think the Chiefs will take Gholston. Think the Saints would deal again to get Ellis? We could get Rivers and another pick. Ira's Bears scenario sounds pretty good right now!!"

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 6:15am EST"C.Long & Gholston are going to switch,SWITCH to a new position that we are paying 2 young guys millions for already, whats a matter with you people?Cromartie fills a need and is gonna be great. If he is half his cousin in S.D. ,hes worth the 6th pick.Trade #2 down and pick up WR Jordy Nelson please! He is quietly moving up the boards.6'3",200LBs,Great hands, good speed, perfect for ball control!"
Wilhelm III Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 6:27am EST"Randy, I dont know where some of your fellow journalists get their material but i think they are more interested in catching attention than reporting facts. "JETS MAY TRADE UP FOR MCFADDEN" is in today's daily news. "A league source said..." well Cimini who is the source ? Randy, Kudos to you for keeping it real. NYJ trading up for Mcfadden is as realistic as Joe Willy coming out of retirement !!"
Ira Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 6:51am EST"Drew, If the Rams take Dorsey then C. Long could fall to the Jets. Falcons need a QB but have three 2nd rd picks. So they really could pass on Ryan and get a QB in the 2nd rd. Gholston, Long and Mcfadden ll could be there for the Raiders. Don't buy into the fact that the Raiders have a stable of RB's. Russell needs a premier RB to take pressure off of him and it will be McFadden."
CEDRIC Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 8:57am EST"Tangini is known for mind games, you can actually dictate the board by spreading rumors that you might jump up to snatch the QB, Ravens want him, they Might jump up snatch Matt which could change whose available when its time for the 6th pick. I just heard an interview with the RAMS GM on SIRIUS, he wants either Gholston, Long, Dorsey. Just a little Nugget for you guy to chew on REAL TALk."
Drew Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:06am EST"Herm just found another way to ruin my day. He is going to draft Gholsten or Long (which ever is left) at 5 now that he has a ton of bullets to fire on draft day. We trade out as fast as possible if that happens, Cinn & NO are both drooling over S Ellis and would come to get him. "
CEDRIC Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:08am EST"I want the bears to pick Mcfadden so we can see D-Mac vs. AP. That would be great to watch!!!!"
joe b Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:12am EST"Randy...what if anything is going on with D-Rob ? And are there any plans to package Bryan Thomas in a deal for more picks ? Both of these players seem to have lost thier spot on the roster. If we could pick up a #3 for either or both it would be great."
Wilhelm III Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:20am EST"Tom Spicer, "what does Leon have that McFadden doesnt " hmm lets see... there's the no. 6 pick in the draft that is not needed. TJ has another 3 good years, Leon will never carry the load fully but remember he was a 4th rounder ! Alot of value there, You probably also believe this hogwash that DMc's sister living with him will make him a more decent citizen, heck maybe he'll even fumble less..."
Braeden Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:23am EST"ok why is everyone acting like it would be the HUGEST dissapointment if the JETS drafted McFadden. Listen it wont be as big a dissapointment of having to draft McKelvin, belvieve me, McKelvin will be bigger dissapointment than McFadden. But thankfully, gholston or McFadden will be a JET next year."
evan Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:48am EST"I love checking the clippings to realize that no one has anyone idea what the jets are going to do! I love it, drafting up for MCF or Ryan?!? So much strategy and so many smokescreens. This is going to be a crazy first 10 picks. I really think Long, Gholaston, and MCF could be gone by 6. I suppose draft the best CB or pray someone would want to trade up to 6, but thats very unlikely i think."
zartan Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:54am EST"weight x mass,Leon is bigger than McFadden.both do the same things.Leon can take it to the house at any time and some say hes not an every down back. C.Long will be going to the Rams. Ryan to the Falcons, have you seen their QBs.looks like 2nd tier s are moving into 1st round. have to take Ryan or trade back up.Raiders:Gholston,Ellis,DMC Cheifs:Dorsey or Clady it'd be a choice of DMC or Gholston. GET D-MAC!!!"
Xavion Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 11:40am EST"I will be upset if we trade down and select a Wr with Mcfadden on the board None of this years wr impress me. all of them second rnd or later picks. Eception may be sweed or thomas they look like they can really improve and Kelly is a whining baby he should drop to 4th rnd. Mcfadden Is Faster than those wr and bigger than most. Let him play wr if we need one that bad which I dont think we do."
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:36pm EST"I think the trade of J Allen really hurts us with KC losing there best pass rusher I now think the draft will go like this 1 MIA Long 2 STL Long 3 ATL Dorsey 4 OAK McFadden 5 KC Gholston than with the Vikings 1st round pick that they got they will get the O lineman that everyone had said they were taking & the 3 guys I think we were looking at are off the board & we are stuck taking a DB "
Ray Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:51pm EST"Uncle joe, switching happens all the time. College DL are often too small for the line in the NFL and are athletic enough to go to LB, and many college LBs move to safety. I think T. Bruschi was a lineman in college, was he worth millions? And the market is what it is, top picks get millions these days. If the Jets draft a CB at 6 it will be McKelvin."
Ray Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:56pm EST"Just heard the commish will be talking to Walsh about the spying....on MAY 13!! Nice of the league to drag this out long enough so if there is anything there it is after the draft so NE holds on to that top pick. Goodell has shown for a long time that he doesn't want to do anything to the Pats, if he did he would have taken their top pick not the last pick of the 1st round."

Damone Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:30pm EST"HOLD ON EVAN!!This is not college football and this is not UVA!!I'm talking about the NFL just like everybody else on Randy's Radar.I didn't say he wasn't good at Virginia,i said he would be better in a 4-3 in the NFL just like most football analyst say!!Now he might work as a Sam linebacker but unless he puts on 10-15 pounds of muscle as a DE,i think he should go to a team in a 43 not us!! "
Ira Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:47pm EST"Randy, After months of reading, debating, and 1 million or so mock drafts the suspense building up to this Saturday at about 3:45 when the Jets will be on the clock there is one thing i can guarantee. The Jets will get their pick in on time.GO JETS!!!!"
Frank Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 3:41pm EST"If we end up staying at 6 I've said this for several weeks Cromartie is the pick. He has the height and speed to matchup with R. Moss. He is taller, faster and a better jumper than McKelvin. He is also versatile and can play anywhere in the secondary as he did at the senior bowl. Tangini likes versatility he has it. McKelvin is not the pick we already have J. Miller and Leon for our return game"
Tom Spicer Said:

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 8:41pm EST"I think McFadden will be the one to fall to us at No. 6. While I would be excited to get a player with such potential, I could see us getting 3 good picks if we could trade down with the likes of Dallas that would fill some needs. I agree that McFadden is a luxury and I have misgivings about his character and tendency to fumble, but the thought of him coming out of the formation and lining up..."

Ray Said:
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 2:53pm EST"No real surprise here. The only thing I am worried about is that the article about the first round swap meet said the Jets are looking to trade up, and give up their 1st, 2nd and 4th to get there. I would rather we stay put or trade down. There will still be alot of good players we could use in the 2nd."
