04/10 — The NFL's slogan for 2008 is "Believe In Now." The Jets, in their approach to this year's free agency and trading period, appear to have bought into that. But they also have expressed faith in the future with the signing of safety Kerry Rhodes to a contract extension.
The deal, finalized and announced by the team this afternoon, will keep Rhodes in green and white for years to come. And with the trade for NT Kris Jenkins and with LB David Harris entering the sophomore season of his higher education, it should keep the Jets' defense strong up the middle for the foreseeable future.
In a late afternoon conference call today, Rhodes said a weight was lifted from his back now that he has that job security that all NFL players seek. "Every player wants that and I was able to get it early," he said. "Once I actually signed it, it was a relief knowing that I’ll be here with the team I like and the guys that I’m familiar with.”
I don't have to tell Jets fans how important Kerry Rhodes is to the operation. You've all seen it and felt it in his three seasons, 48 games plus a playoff, all as a starter in the deep middle. He's become better as a ballhawk, better as a blitzer, better as a backfield tackler. He's one of the NFL's bright, young stars.
Perhaps that status should have been validated already, but the Pro Bowl is what it is, and soon he'll play in his first all-star game. If the voters (who are split into three blocs: fans, players and coaches) need help, here are some charts to quantify Rhodes' takeaway talent (interceptions plus fumble recoveries) on the Jets and his sack-ability among NFL defensive backs (both charts are for the past two regular seasons), two of the tools in his arsenal to watch for in the coming seasons:
| Most Takeaways, Jets | TAs | Most Sacks, DBs, NFL | Sacks |
| S Kerry Rhodes | 11 | S Kerry Rhodes, JETS | 7.0 |
| LB Victor Hobson | 5 | S Roman Harper, NO | 5.0 |
| CB Andre Dyson | 5 | CB Corey Ivy, BAL | 5.0 |
| CB David Barrett | 4 | S Adrian Wilson, ARZ | 5.0 |
The release on the Rhodes extension can be found on the newyorkjets.com news page, and early Friday you can read Eric Allen's report on Kerrys' conference call.

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 3:16pm EST"RANDY- THAT WAS A NO BRAINER TO EXTEND KERRY'S CONTRACT BECAUSE WE WOULD HAVE LOST HIM NEXT YEAR TO FREE AGENCY. NOW THE JETS DEFENSE WILL BE AWESOME FOR MANY YEARS!!"
Andrew in Tucson Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 3:36pm EST"Randy great story Rhodes kicks butt. Just to bad that BSPN and the NFL network reported this a day ago. Being the OFFICAL web site of the team it would be great to hear this news from you guys first instead of the other guys in the business. If they knew about you can't sit there and say you guys didn't. It seems like you guys should get the info first and the rest of the media second. JETS JETS!"
MikeMc Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 3:39pm EST"You knew they were going to get Rhodes done, but 5yr extension, GREAT JOB! Lets get Baker locked up for 3yrs now. Ira heard you with Joe B. today , and like I said before everything I hate in a Jet fan, selfish championship or bust attitude . Our jets have given us alot of excitement over the yrs, only one team can win it all, we'll have our day soon, but we need to enjoy the ride."
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 4:24pm EST"I just read the Broncos & Robertson already have a contract in place & they will do a draft day trade for a 5th to 7th round pick also that the Jets are still looking at Poteat but until they get rid of Robertson they can not sign him. The news also said the Jets are looking to trade down anywhere from 10 to 15 to pick up extra picks & in between 10 & 15 they want to get L Mcelvin or A Cromartie"
Darrell Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 4:26pm EST"Randy, this is the best move of the entire off-season. Love bringing in Faneca. Love the trade for Kris Jenkins. (I really think Tony Richardson is going to be the under-the-radar type signing that we are all gonna love) But this right here, is the crown jewel. Kerry has been a rock since he first took the field for us. And. He. Just. Keeps. Getting. Better. Kerry Rhodes. Jet for life. "
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 4:26pm EST"Rhodes is a stud he should have made the pro bowl & I think the Jets are going to take a DB with there pick so next year between Rhodes, Revis & whoever the Jets get we should have 1 of the best secondarys in the league"
Ablity Mouwon Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 4:52pm EST"its about time time and CB hank is next we dont need a DB in any draft, all we need to do is teach eirc smith how to hit and takle. why draft a young guy thats going to cost instead while our secondary is already young, then resign a old man in hank that going to bring leadership at a low price, how much money do we have???????"

Darrell Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 5:26pm EST"Ih8brady, Elam is a good young talent, who has been improving since he started watching film with Mr. Rhodes. ******** on a separate note- I'd just like to say (in light of a LOT of cyber-speculation) I would absolutely LOVE seeing Hank Poteat back again this year. Quality depth/nickel/2nd CB and a proven vet. Why this guy doesn't garner more attention throughout the league amazes me. "
MikeMc Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 6:51pm EST"Tremendous potential in Elam, now that Rhodes is here for the long term to tutor him in film study, the sky is the limit. Still think we need to add a CB , be it Poteat, FA or draft. If the Jets can trade down and still get Jenkins ,Mckelvin or Cromartie it will be a war room party. I think Talib is off their board now due to lying about partying. I'm very excited about the possibilities , 2 weeks"
Ira Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 7:03pm EST"MikeMc, Thats the way Joe is he can't help himself. Maybe after they get the deal done with D-Rob and see what they need for their rookies then maybe they'll get Baker done. Otherwise he will have to wait until next season. They just spent a lot of $. I also believe Baker just had his contract done either last year or the year before. No hurry with him.I do want them to sign him long haul. GO JETS"
jake b in 323 Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 7:39pm EST"Thrilled with the Rhodes extension. Kerry had a very strong 2nd half last year, and Randy, as far as stat charts go - if you compare the numbers of the pro bowl safeties (Reed, Polamalu, Lynch) to Rhodes in 06, it clearly illustrates what a joke the PB voting is - he got royally jobbed that year, particularly by Lynch."
dougmc Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 7:43pm EST"Take Gholston or McFadden 1st.WR w/ 2nd pick. Get something for Roberson.Hold off on DB unless one lands in their lap with 2nd or 4th rounder.Miller and Poteat will be fine if we have a killer pass-rush.We need explosive player on offense to keep other teams of balance.Too many tricks and gadget plays and not enough substance.Speed and a super talent will free up WR's and TE/slot receiver!Go JETS!"

LETS GO JETS"
Jeremy Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:33pm EST"Well deserving of it! Too bad he got the Pro Bowl snub b/c of the 4-12 record. How could Palomalu be a Pro Bowler he barely played last year and when he did he was average at best. Everyone needs to vote for Rhodes this year. Very good sign for Elam--he's got a great mentor! If none of the top players are sitting at #6 Jets need to take McKelvin or trade out for $ reasons!"
Pete Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:40pm EST"Thrilled Tangini took care of a real Jet for once. I can't believe the people that posted Vilma had to go but want Poteat as a starting corner. I think you should have to pass an exam before you are allowed to post here. Too many box score readers looking at stats and not understanding football. Same guys that want Ty Law back and say Chad is most accurate passer in game. You really have to watch!"
Hank Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:43pm EST"kerry rhodes is one of the best, in a few years he will be one of the greatest. "
steven Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:54pm EST"It is good to anchor the secondary but blitzing the quarterback every play is how we make the secondary's job easy. With the Patriots going after Gholston what are we going to do to add to pace as a blitzing corp? We saw what the giants did in the superbowl because of the blitz. Can we please get a defense that can blitz? Turnovers (and penalties) is what rules the game. Rhodes and gholston yeah"
Ira Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 9:05pm EST"MikeMc, Elam is a nice surprise and love his hard hitting style of play. And with E. Smith and Hawkins that makes up a nice group of safeties. The real sleeper here is D.Bing. If he can live up to the way he played in college he might end up being a steal. I have been saying all along they will draft a CB in the 1st rd especially now if they trade down. CB is a need pick for them now."
HowieD Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 9:05pm EST"I've been a Jets fan for 36 years and I can't remember ever being this excited going into a new season. After Walt Michaels' departure I've mostly taken a wait-and-see attitude through all the bone head decisons that brought years of frustration, but I sense something drastically different this year and truly believe that we're in for a great run."
Dunnie Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 9:47pm EST"I liked the way Elam played last year too. He brought an attitude to the field. If he can reduce the bonehead errors .. like almost killing your own CB ... then he will be real good. I hope we can pull off a good deal to trade down. I have a feeling its going to be mediocre at best ... swap 1sts and get a fourth."
Ray Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 3:25am EST"Hey guys, just want to get some feedback. Lets assume the Phins take Gholston #1, the Raiders/Cowboys take McFadden at #4 and we can't trade down. Who does everyone see us getting? I think the Chiefs affect us the most. I have it this way: 1-Gholston, 2- J. Long, 3-Dorsey, 4-McFadden, 5-C. Long, Jets take McKelvin. I prefer Long, but can't quite gauge KC. Hear they may take QB or OL too."
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 6:27am EST"Our biggest needs are a pass rusher, an explosive guy on offense & a corner we need a WR but not that bad. Get McFadden, Long or Gholston 1st round & a corner in the 2nd round. If you get McFadden 1st take Harvey or Groves in the 2nd round than you have 2 4th round picks to take a corners with we still have Barrett, Miller & we can get Poteat for dirt cheap. You guys want to see a good secondary"
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 6:34am EST"You guys want to see a good secondary show me a front 7 that puts heat on the QB all the time & they make the secondary look great. C Webster on the Giants was thought of as a bust but this year the Giant front 7 put it together & now all of a sudden he is a good covering Moss in the bowl ? We do not need 2 1st round picks at corner Draft McFadden, C Long or Gholston & if they are not there go DB"
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 6:42am EST"The Jet D needs to blitz more look at the Pats, Steelers & Chargers they are always bringing at least 1 LB in on every pass play you watch the Jet D & Ellis, Robertson, Coleman & Thomas are coming in but the other guys are going into coverage bring 1 of them put heat on the QB WE NEED TO BLITZ MORE"
Frank Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:52am EST"So now that the New Jersey Rangers are done spending huge money on a bunch of question marks except Rhodes and Faneca we don't have enough money to sign a #6 pick. Depending on who slides there could very well make a huge difference on either side of the ball. We have not addressed the single biggest need we have which are playmakers on either side of the ball. So Tangenious you are on the clock."
Frank Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:01am EST"They now have 2 weeks to mesh all these signings with the draft and further trades. We still have an offense that is goind to be painful to watch and points are going to be at a premium. We have a defense with a lot of question marks with a glaring weakness in rushing the QB and a hole at CB which exacerbates that weakness. We need a big time pass rusher and 2 are within our grasp we must get one."
Drew Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 10:57am EST"Pete,I agree that some fans are clueless but are you suggesting getting rid of Vilma was a mistake? I also happen to be fan who is excited by moves they made. I dont love Woody and am luke warm on Pace but we had salary cap room and upgraded needs. All their bonuses are tied to their 1st 2 years salary so who cares. We just signed Rhodes and kept Coles happy. Sounds like Mr T knows what he's doing"
Ira Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 2:33pm EST"Drew, I know that Pace has had only 1good year. He did show what he could do in a 3-4 last year and will only get better this year. Pace will bring it and show he was worth the money. Don't worry just remember Mr. T was going after the same guy that Parcells wanted.GO JETS!!!!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 4:01pm EST"We could have Deion Sanders & Ty Law in there prime at both corners & it will not matter if you can not rush the passer. If the QB has all day like most QB'S have when they play the Jets it does not matter how good your CB'S are eventually the WR will get open. If we do not upgrade the pass rush in the draft Jenkins will have to command double teams & Pace & Thomas need career years or we r done"
Row Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 5:11pm EST"Honestly, I don't care who we take in the first round. I want to see #18 Brandon Flowers in a Jets uniform. I am awaiting a WR upgrade I think will be overlooked. I still feel Coles quit on the team last year. I am impressed he showed up for workouts.. Does anyone else think Desean Jackson would compliment Coles?"
Rob Said:
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 4:01pm EST"First off, congratulations to Kerry Rhodes well deserved package. About people saying we do not have playmakers on either side of the ball?? what about rhodes, revis, cotechery, miller, washington and harris? It was situation surrounding them let to their non-stellar performances....but still were very good."
Rickey Said:
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 7:52pm EST"Kerry is a play maker. Once we get a playmaker on defense in the first round. In the second round WR - Hardy. Six foot 7" in the scoring zone gives us a great weapon, You don't need a super quarterback to throw the ball high. "
JetsEnthusiast Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 7:04pm EST"Kerry earned it, ,now just watch Abram Elam. He'll definitely earn his too!!!!!"

Ira Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 2:54pm EST"Randy, Hope you're enjoying the West Coast. This is well deserved and couldn't have happened to a better guy. He is the best ballhawk safety in the league. Guess it comes from his basketball days. Great player who should've been named to the Pro Bowl twice already. I remember when he said if he got an INT vs Favre last year he would bronze the ball. He should be the alternate for the D headset."
