File Under: Eric Mangini, 2008 schedule, San Francisco, business meetings
04/07 — Can't get enough of that Left Coast.
As you know, the Jets have four trips to the Pacific ahead (San Diego, Oakland, San Francisco and Seattle) in '08. And I'm so glad that I'm leaving for San Francisco late this afternoon for a preliminary scouting trip.
The City by the Bay is the venue for this year's NFL business meetings, which run from Tuesday through the week. I'm ambivalent about adding a fifth trip passing through four time zones in this calendar year. Who wants to sit on a sold-out 737 for seven hours?
But once there, I'll adjust, and the information at the meetings regarding optimizing our Web site, increasing the synergy between the league and its 32 team Internet operations will be invaluable as we set out to keep you entertained and informed for the 2008 season.
I can tell you this. We can always improve our metrics, but one number jumps out for me from my first year on the job as editor-in-chief of newyorkjets.com: This past week we posted our 10,000th comment from you the fans who have responded to our Radar entries since last year's draft. To me, that's amazing.
My five flights to the West Coast this year ahead will break a personal record. As it is, the Jets' four trips to the Pacific and/or Mountain time zones will make their 2008 schedule the longest in franchise history.
Long-time fans will remember the Denver-Oakland-Los Angeles/San Diego three-game road trips the Titans played in 1960 and '61. And back-to-back games, either Oakland-San Diego, Oakland-Denver or Denver-San Diego, were staples of each season from 1962-69.
But since then, a season with even three countrywide trips is unusual and has required a playoff game to get to that number. The consecutive Oakland trips to end the 2001 season set the stage for '02 and three West Coast trips (San Diego, Oakland and back to Oakland in the playoffs) in a 10-week span. And in '04 there were the two trips to play the Chargers, in Week 2 and then in the AFC Wild-Card Game, with an Arizona trek tossed in between.
Still no word on the '08 NFL schedule, but this was the week last year when the full '07 schedule was released. And when the Jets' order of games is unveiled, I wouldn't be surprised to see a two-game West Coast road trip on the docket — it almost can't be avoided. Then a question would be: Would head coach Eric Mangini want to make four cross-country flights (two out and two back) in a 10-day span, or would he want to keep the Jets out on the coast for the week in between the two games?
All will be revealed soon. And Eric Allen and I will continue to keep you posted throughout the week, on club matters that come up in San Francisco and on team issues back in Hempstead, N.Y., where the players continue their work toward attacking that now-not-so-distant 2008 schedule.

Wilhelm III Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 1:19pm ET"Randy, it would make logistical & ecological sense to have the Jets on a 2 game stretch on the left coast but with so many factors in the scheduling equation for 32 teams, i don't see it feasbile. Nevertheless, should it happen, I would emplore Mangini to keep the troops out there. Altough these guys fly better than most of us ever will, the pressure and speed do take a toll on the body and mind."
Ira Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 2:11pm ET"Randy, Forgot maybe you will make 6 flights to the WC this year. Lets say the Jets have to play the Chargers in the playoffs out there. This is great. I hope to rack up some frequent flyer miles for sure. If i were the coach i would keep the team on the WC for the week. "

Mon, April 7, 2008 - 2:32pm ET"Hey Randy , how would the players respond to having to stay on the west coast for an extended period of time, say 10 days. I would imagine they would be ticked off, wasting their days off away from family , friends and the local media. O.K. maybe they won't miss the media."

Mon, April 7, 2008 - 3:34pm ET"RANDY- THE JETS WILL BE JUST FINE!!! ONE GAME AT A TIME AND WE WILL TRIPLE OUR WIN TOTAL FROM LAST YEAR!!! 12-4!!!!!!! AFC CHAMPS!!!-------????"
Zartan Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 3:44pm ET"west coast trip is cool.JETS play better on the road due to home boo fans.the Oakland back2 Oakland game was the game that we needed CHAD 2 step up & be the man of the team.he had the dear in the headlight look that game.i new from then,he was not our guy.if you can get a better QB why not.i want Gholston but Ryan,McFadden,Mikelven who cares.the'll be a jet,im all in."
zartan Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:01pm ET"If you combine Chad with Kellan, you'd get Chad Clemmens.a real NFL QB.none of these guys can do the job.there should be no doubt who your QB is."
Damone Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:03pm ET"Well Victor Hobson has gone to the pats but thats ok because thats not much of a pick-up.He was way too slow and too short to really do anything special.I hope he doesn't give them to much info.I think we need more depth at that MLB and OLB position.I can't wait for the draft. The suspense is killing me!"
Damone Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:09pm ET"Hey randy,i hear what you're saying about all this traveling coming up.I hope you and the Jets get all the rest you need this off-season because you're gonna need it.My wife tells me i'm over-excited about this coming season so i should rest up as well.J-E-T-S BABY!!!"
D.RAZZ Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:19pm ET"If they get back to back games they should just stay out there. It wouldn't just save on the jet lag, it would help to re-gain the focus they experienced during training camp. If it happens I hope it comes in the first quarter of the season. That "behind enemy lines" mentality would go a long way in helping the new players and the returning ones bond into a cohesive unit. "
Ira Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:46pm ET"Damone, I disagree and think that its a nice p/u for the Pats. Hobson was a nice player who wouldn't be a force but he stayed healthy, never missed and game and was a steady player. Reports say they could move him to ILB."
Ken Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:46pm ET"You see this is the problem with players moving from one team to another in the same conference. Now are we going to have too worry about what information (Victor Hobson) is going to give NEW ENGLAND on the JETS Defense and JETS Offense?"
Frank Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:55pm ET"Nice thought Ira but really depending on what the Jets do around the draft with trades and picks there will be no playoffs this year. Especially if Tangini follows through with an open QB competition and Chad is the starter we will be lucky to win 8 games this year. With 4 west coast games and a tougher schedule don't even try to tell me that adding Woody and Faneca is worth any more than 4 games."
jetfan Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 5:25pm ET"give kellen a shot he had no o line last year and even thomas jones suffered beacause of the same. bret favre didnt have a hall of fame year either the guy started he throws 50 yards ona rope he dont have chads vission yet but he arm is far better. Kellen Clemens is the answer for the jets new o line running game = big year for new kid with a big arm"
Big A Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 7:48pm ET"HI Randy. How does staying out on the west coast affect the 2nd week's game preparation (film study, training, etc.) being away from your own facilities?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Big A, if it happens, we'll explore all those issues down the road."
Frank Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 8:20pm ET"I guess the Pace signing gave way to V. Hobson not resigning with the NY Jests. In 2006 he had 100 tackles and 6 sacks sounds like the numbers Pace put up last year. Seems the Pats see something Tangini doesn't. Personally I liked him and think he was a decent player. Another young 28 yr. old high (2nd) round draft pick from Drew's territory dumped overboard. "
Frank Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 8:22pm ET"Hey Zartan, Adolf Frank here. You don't like my Chad/Favre combination?"
michael Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 8:47pm ET"hey jets fans and ira and frank how about if mcfadden and Ghostinle guy from ohio state is gonne maybe we could get Felix jones mcfadden partner at ark.i know it might be high pick for this guy but he look like he will be better for us then mcfadden.and i was lookin at mcfadden he doen't look as bad as everyone sayin he is.i know he fumbles a lot.but, rember tinki baber from the giants."
michael Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 8:50pm ET"like i was sayin jets fan and ira and frank rember tikki baber from the giants who used to fumble a lot and then he got better with it and came one of the best rb in the NFl.maybe Mcfadden will be like that with his future what you guys think?jets fan for life,Michael"
Andrew in Tucson Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 9:15pm ET"Randy the west coast trips will be brutal. I kind of like it because it gives me a chance to go catch a game in live action. I saw the Jets play here in Arizona and it was my first NFL game ever. I wish I had the cash to see some games at the Meadowlands but flights are expensive. Cali is much closer. I just hope the fans aren't jerks to me for being a JETS fan. Oakland is out of the question!"
Howard Said:
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 10:53pm ET"have fun flying across america i cant stand to fly anymore, with all these airport delays and airlines that simply dont care about the passangers. is it draft time yet and great job with10,000 post on here randy"
Randy Lange Said:
"Thanks, Howard. By the way, we sat on the tarmac at JFK for 1½ hours after our scheduled departure tonight."

Ira Said:
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:34am ET"michael, The Jets RB's are right now are a very good group. Jones,Leon and Chatman. Jones got 1100 yds with that offense last year and no o-line. He goes for 1300-1400 and the team should rush for 2000 yds for sure. No need to draft a RB this year."
Frank Said:
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 8:28am ET"Michael, at # 6 that is way too high to draft a guy like F. Jones he will probably be a good back but is a second round choice. We have more pressing needs at CB and we need a big receiver and I love M. Kelly. His pro day is April 9 pay attention to what he does. He might be the first WR taken in the draft. As for a CB I prefer Cromartie only because he is the tallest and will matchup with R. Moss"
Tom Spicer Said:
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 10:05am ET"Chad is all heart & is a great guy I just do not think he is the answer long term. I am not saying Kellen is but he could be & Chad is not. I say keep Chad let him back up Kellen & if he flops Chad can step right in & we know what he can do. The Cards have Warner at $5 mil a year to back up so the Jets can keep Chad as a backup this year & if Kellen plays well then next year he can go."
Kenny Said:
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 2:28pm ET"I looked at the JETS 2007 games & tried to C why CHAD had so many interceptions. For 1 thing, the JETS THREW the ball way more than they RAN in 2007. But CHAD with 5 yrs experience in the NFL, CHAD STILL STARES down the receiver..which was also 1 of KELLY CLEMENS problems as QB. CHAD with 5 yrs of experience in the NFL has to do BETTER than stare down the WRs, the QB has to LOOK the CB off !"
CJJET Said:
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 2:45pm ET"Randy, that schedule is payback for last year where our longest trip was New Jersey. A vote for Gholsten! J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS"
Randy Lange Said:
"To CJJet and all other Radarheads, the NFL does not plan to announce the full schedule until next week."

Once again, thanks for all you do, it is much appreciated by EVERY Jets fan! J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!"
damone Said:
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 4:05pm ET"You are right Ira and i should of clarify myself.I should of said that Hobson was not that good at the OLB position,as for moving inside,i believe he could do some damage."
Drew Said:
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 4:07pm ET"Frank...You kill me!! The Pats saw a average OLB that is about 8 years younger than any LB on their team. This is what they do they find players for cheap and hope they can coach them up. Tangini spent the money for a better player. By the way when did Michigan become my territory??"
Joe Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 2:06am ET"If there's going to be meetings about the league's internet operations, you should see why the hell the NFL can't offer something like the MLB.tv streaming package for watching the season's games. I know they have the NFL sunday ticket setup with DirectTV but not all of us have satellite. would love to pay money to see all the Jets games that I'd never see living in Boston."
Row Said:
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 8:03pm ET"Joe, try to get CBS Eastern and you can still get all of the Jets games."

Hey Randy, maybe you should do an article about the amount of Good RB's we will face this season. L.Johnson, J.Vargas, S.Jackson, LT, T.Henry, E.James, and Thomas Jones's brother Julius...The should get the comment to 20,000 easily LOL. Great Job RANDY, your the BEST"
