File Under: Darrelle Revis, David Bowens, Leon Washington, Calvin Pace
03/31 — Jets fans are like kids in a Cold Stone Creamery right now, and why not? The options seem endless and everybody has a taste for something different.
Take pass-rushing outside linebacker. Calvin Pace arrived in free agency with the promise that he'll be able to pressure the quarterback as he did last season for the Cardinals. And with the sixth pick of the draft, 'niks are clamoring for Vernon Gholston if he doesn't rise too far, Chris Long if he drops, Derrick Harvey as a fallback.
My advice: Don't overlook D-Bo.
"We added some great guys and I think everyone will contribute," David Bowens told me when I asked him the past several days about all his potential competition for the '08 season. "And my job is the same. I've always been one of those low-key players who worked hard and did my job under the radar — not Randy's. [Thanks for the plug, David].
"I always did my job, I'm a very loyal player, a team player. Not to forget about me is a good statement, because I never do."
Some Green & White followers may have been slightly surprised when Bowens started to make one play after another beginning with an increase in his defensive reps in Game 8 vs. Buffalo, a batted ball here, a QB hit there. Then came his first half-sack as a Jet, of Ben Roethlisberger in Game 9, a tipped ball for a Darrelle Revis interception at Miami, two more sacks (Vince Young and Brodie Croyle) to end the season.
And the man was pretty special on teams. His centerpiece was the blocked punt and TD return in Game 14 at New England. He also had a career-high 15 kick coverage tackles and was on the wedge for Leon Washington's dazzling kickoff returns, and when opponents kicked short to avoid Neon Leon, Bowens returned three kicks on average to the Jets 38.
"I think that's what's helped me sustain my career," said Bowens, close to qualifying for his NFL AARP card as he enters his 10th pro season and approaches his 31st birthday party in July. "You find your little niche in the league: What are you good at? I think my thing has been special teams, third downs and making a few plays here and there that maybe can help decide a game."
After being a Dolphin since midway through the 2001 season, Bowens admitted to a touch of "homesickness" as he began life as a New York area resident a year ago. But he picked up speed as the off-season and then the season went on and entered this off-season on the rise.
To start the new year, he decompressed from football with some traveling and family time. That included a first for him: horseback riding.
"I'd never done that before," he said with a laugh. "My daughter wanted to go, and she and her mom put me on the doggone horse. If you're a first-time rider, don't get on the biggest horse. I think because of my size, I had to get on the biggest horse, and he was a little stubborn. I didn't like it at all."
But he likes where is now that he's back on the horse in Sal Alosi's strength and conditioning program, having reported just a couple of pounds heavier than his season-ending weight.
"I came in excited. I'm more familiar with the area, with the team. I'm approaching this thing with a lot of intensity," said Bowens, less intense at the moment, having just finished his workout and chilling on the couch in the office of Bruce Speight, the Jets' senior director of media relations.
"I think my goals are going to be a little more aggressive this year as far as what I want to achieve personally. If I set the bench high, then falling short won't be that much of a disappointment."
Something tells me Bowens isn't about to disappoint, no matter who lines up with him at his position.

I expect the same and more this year. Thats one of the reasons i feel a CB or WR will be the way they go with their 1st pick whatever number they end up picking at. Gholston has too many question marks right now."
SteveS Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 2:37pm ET"Ira, I was wondering what question marks you were refferring to when you mentioned Vernon Gohlston? "
Ira Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 3:10pm ET"zartan, Thanks. Good to see you bring up Murrell. Another pass rusher that nobody mentions. It's going to be tuff for him to make this team. He will really have to shine on special teams to make it."
Dunnie Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 3:11pm ET"I really really hope we can find a way to trade down for a late first round pick and get a quality CB or maybe even pick up Dan Connor to bookend Harriss. Although I don't think Gholston is THAT big of a question mark. The dude has a motor. "
Drew Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 3:31pm ET"Bownes did put decent pressure on the QB late in the year. I really like him as a player and a leader. With Jenkins eating up the middle the outside guys will have more chances this year... Ira I agree with you on the 1st pick. The problem is the draft could play out that we will have to reach on a player at 6. I would hate to take a CB that high and I do not think a WR grades out in the Top 10."
Frank Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 3:46pm ET"Do like Bowens in passing situations which hopefully will be abundant this year if Jenkins pans out. What is all this nonsense about drafting a QB? Especially at #2 are you guys nuts? Didn't Tangini draft Clemens #2-2 years ago? I love all the geniuses that say Clemens is no good or not the answer after half a season. It takes time and typically a few years to develop a QB. Clemens has the tools.."
Frank Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 3:51pm ET"...and since Woody doesn't care if we lose another 12 games this year I for one want Clemens to have the entire year to develop if necessary. But I also think that with the supporting cast they brought in Clemens will play well. On an unrelated note I think I need a haircut."
Tyrone Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 3:58pm ET"The Jets better be wise in drafting a young QB, like Kevin O`Connell in the late rounds. He`s going too be a steal!"
Jetsfandan Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 4:06pm ET"Bowens is a good reserve player, and a beast on ST, but I think we still need to add a dynamic pass rusher, whether it be Gholston or perhaps we trade down and grab a guy like Quentin Groves later in the first. You can never have enough of pass rushers on your defense, and right now we could still use an elite talent there. However, with the holes we plugged in free agency, we have many options. "
Hogan Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 4:54pm ET"think BOWENS showed good potential towards the end ofthe season. If he can step it up he could be a threat."
Drew Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 5:48pm ET"We have no business drafting a QB in the first 4 rounds of this draft. Clemens is the guy. He did show some warts last year but can you blame the kid behind that OL?? Tangini traded up to get him and a lot of scouts thought he was on par with the big 3 from rd1. I wouldnt mind drafting a QB late.....E Ainge might drop into the 5th round. That is a project QB you take. He has brains and the arm. "
Ira Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 7:04pm ET"SteveS, Some have said that Gholston is inconsistent and has a hard time get off blockers and playing the run. That sounds very much like John Abraham until he improved his play vs the run."
Hank Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 7:20pm ET"D-bo is solid veteran player who brings some experience. I agree with Frank on KC, he had flashes of some great things, but he still played like a rookie at times. Chad is a good mentor and a team guy who will help him as long as hes a Jet. With a good line and and a pro bowl fullback he can develop the way a qb should. Remember Cp sat behind vinny for two years plus before he started."
Ira Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 7:39pm ET"Sorry i left oot Brad Smith who was also taken in the 4th rd. Drew, No problem to see what Clemens can do with the new o-line but if a guy like Flacco is sitting there in rd #2 he would be very hard to pass up. "
Pete Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 8:07pm ET"With only 3 down lineman that are oversized to take up space, I hope we don't have to count on Bowens rushing the passer. You need special outside linebackers in the 3-4 as the defensive ends are there to take up blockers to free those guys up (Derrick Thomas, Bryce Paup, LT) I am not saying that Clemens is our savior, but we are still unaware as to his potential. We KNOW we need CB, WR, OLB/DE!"
Randy Lange Said:
"Pete, don't forget about the 20-plus snaps per game that the Jets are in their sub defense, based on the past two seasons."
Drew Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 8:36pm ET"SteveS....I am a huge Big Ten fan and there were times that Gholsten was invisible on the field last year. He went from a probably 1st rd pick 2 months ago to a possible top 10 pick until his ridiculously impressive combine. Now after his Pro Day he is a definite top 5 with a chance of going #1. There are questions that he might be a "Mike Mamula" workout warrior. I still would take him at 6 though"
Randy Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 9:18pm ET"In reading some of these cooments it kinda sounds like people are giving up on our boy Chad. I really hope he is still our starter this year. Only true Jet fans know he is our best bet right now. And i am getting tired of hearing how weak his arm is. I don't know what those people are watching but I have seen him throw deap plenty of times. Remember he is a touch passer that can definetly do deap."
Howard Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 10:27pm ET"i thought d-bo played well at the end of the year but he doesnt have the speed anymore required to play. the jets d needs a big infusion of team speed i really believe with better speed on d we can keep up"
Frank Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 9:53am ET"By the way Zartan, this is Adolf Frank speaking, Herm Edwards was the one who proposed the haircut rule!"
SteveS Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 3:20pm ET"Drew... I agree with you that the Jets should take him at No.6. Ira, I disagree in that every player has some kind of negative - He's not good against the run - but currently in the Jets defense with K. Coleman, K. Jenkins and D. Harris the linebacker we need ISNT a run stuffer, but rather one to get after the QB's. "
John Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 3:30pm ET"Does anyone make sense of picking gohlson and putting him next to david harris at ILB(like adalius thomas who is a de/olb and now plays ilb)? that would give the jets the best front seven in the league!!? and mangini will be able to move all the linebackers with DAVID BOWENS which could cause a lot of confusion - which is kind of what the giants do? anyone?"
Pete Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 7:59pm ET"Randy(not Lange), have you watched Chad throw the ball? He throws with so much touch the ball floats in the air and he can't hit his receivers in stride. DB's are jumping routes and either making the pick or killing the receiver as he waits for the ball. Of course he can throw deep, that's easy. But he can't hit the 15 yard out pattern, that is not. 2 rotator cuff surgeries, not his fault!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 8:43pm ET"John Thomas played OLB Bruschi & Seau were inside Vrabel & Thomas are outside"
John Said:
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 1:08pm ET"Tom Spicer, way to do your homework - what actually happened was A. Thomas played ILB until OLB Colvin got hurt, so the patriots moved A. Thomas to out OLB (because he is so versitale) toward the end of the season. And A. Thomas is projected to start next season at ILB. "
Row Said:
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 7:00pm ET"It looks as if we are going to draft Gholston if you were to ask me. I personally would try for a trade for our first round pick for a corner or an explosive WR. Its a shame we took a 4th rounder for Vilma and didn't find a Roy Williams. Is there a reason to not address our needs? Drew? "
