03/19 — Today we kick off newyorkjets.com's series of stories looking back at the Jets' 2007 season and looking ahead to the 2008 season, position by position.
Eric Allen got a hold of Jerricho Cotchery the other day and Jerricho always has some great thoughts, whatever the subject. He talked about his and his wideout mates' year that was and also what he is doing personally this off-season to come back with an impactful season in the Green & White offense. You can read EA's story on the WRs on our home page now.
Our plan is to provide one or two position stories every week through the week before "draft week," nine position pieces in all. Each one will feature a player or two as they pass through the Jets' training facility to participate in the off-season strength and conditioning program, lending perspective on what went right and wrong in '07 and where it will lead in '08.
We're well aware that most fans don't want to dwell on the 4-12 season past, but our emphasis will be on reviewing and previewing. As center Nick Mangold told me the other day: "You learn your best when something goes wrong. So there's plenty of stuff to learn from, but you can't dwell on the fact of what last season was."
That's our approach precisely: Learn, don't dwell, move forward. The position stories will be mixed in on the site along with other player features, Real Football pieces, draft and free agency info and Jets Flight Crew information, all taking us through the next five weeks as the drumbeats of the 2008 NFL Draft get louder and louder.
Ryan Serves as a Reminder
Former Jets head coach Herm Edwards was among the multitude (well, a reported 42 representatives of 22 NFL teams) in attendance at Boston College's pro day Tuesday, and as Coach Herm accurately stated it: "He's the main reason we're here."
"He" is QB Matt Ryan, and I mention him here only because of something Edwards told CBSsportsline.com — that Ryan has a lot of mannerisms that he saw in Chad Pennington when he was coaching the Jets. Edwards, of course, "inherited" Pennington when he became HC in 2001 and then installed Chad to great effect as the starter in Game 5 of the 2002 season.
"He's fiery but he keeps himself under control. You have to do that at the quarterback position because so much can happen," Edwards said of Ryan. "He has a good enough arm, he's smart enough and, in my opinion, he has good poise in games. I've watched him in games where he's behind. He has all the intangibles for a quarterback to play in our league."
Taking Flight
I mentioned the Jets Flight Crew above and it's only appropriate. Since the Flight Crew announced it was expanding from 10 to 22 members and is now accepting applications for auditions and for prep classes before those auditions, there's been a great response. Click here to read about what the Flight Crew is planning and to find a link to the audition application.
Flight Crew director Denise Garvey sat down with Eric Allen on Tuesday and we'll have the story of that interview on our home page Thursday morning.

Wed, March 19, 2008 - 2:21pm ET"Are are some #'s that show how good LC and Cotchery are as a combo. They had 9 catches of 30 yds or more. Cotchery 6X in 15 games-Bal-50,Cin-32,Was-39,Dal-31,Cle-32, Ten-48. LC 3x in 12 games Cin -57,Pit -56 and Mia 32 on 1 leg. Given the improvement of the o-line it will make the running game so much better which in turn will make the passing game much better. "

Wed, March 19, 2008 - 3:08pm ET"Jericho and LC are good at their job but I haven't seen any terell owens or randy moss or calvin johnson, etc. Jets could sure benefit from a fast 6'5" guy as a wide receiver. With the running backs we have, a tall fast wide receiver would be icing on the cake. giove keyshawn a call"

Wed, March 19, 2008 - 4:33pm ET"Randy, when the Jets drafted JC, I told my son he was going to be awesome. I believe Stuckey has the same potential. Hopefully he can stay healthy.Still wouldn't mind drafting a WR with speed & size. Someone who can stretch the field.Hope LC grows up. As captain, he's not setting a good example trying to renegotiate w/ 2 yrs remaining on contract, especially when he had terrible yr. Go Jets!!!!!"

Braeden Said:
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 6:11pm ET"We NEED to lock up a reciever in the draft, whether its James Hardy in the second round or trading up for Desean Jakcson. Here are some possible deals for 1st rounders. E Bart, and a 4th rounder to Vikings for 1st rounder and draft Derrick Harvey DRob, 6th rd pick, and 7th rd to tampa for their 1st rd pick and draft DeSean Jackson. Also draft Gholston with the #6 pick, tell me what you think."

Wed, March 19, 2008 - 6:51pm ET"LC n JC are a great combination and they have entertained so many jets fans errtime they touch the ball but i think that we need another WR to complement these two. Im a fan of Brad Smith and the way we use him as a multiweapon and i think that he has a lot of potential if he is used right. also i think that whoever is at QB better step up we keep blamin the line but wow they played under PAR."
Frank Said:
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 6:53pm ET"Listening to Herm and reading between the lines sounds like Tangini should get on the phone send both Chad and Coles to the Cheifs we swap #1's plus we get a 3rd and 4th rounder. Then we draft Chris Long package a few of our picks moving back into the first round and pick M. Kelly late in the first round. We dump a major headache in Coles and avoid any QB controversies to undermine the season."
DAMONE Said:
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 7:57pm ET"Please draft a tall WR.If we've done all of this in the offseason, there is no reason to try to wait until next year to get a tall WR.I can't wait till draft day.Any move we make will be a good one.How about a tall QB like Flacco!!These tall QB's are having a lot of sucess in the NFL.6'4 AND UP!"
ira Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 5:43am ET"I learned we brought in McFadden to check him out. While I personally think if we dont trade down that we go Defense with the first pick, you just never know with Tangini. The fumbling issue is a serious problem and I think our backfield looks good as is. T Jones will be a different player with a good O Line. All the best to all JET fans and I wish you a safe and happy EASTER."
Frank Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 10:23am ET"Pats had Gohlston in for a very quite visit yesterday. There is no way he falls to #7 but I could see Little Bill trying to trade up ahead of the Jets to grab him. Personally I think we need to do whatever it takes to draft in this order C. Long, Gohlston, Jake Long. One of those 3 would make a big impact on our team this year. If Big Bill takes Ryan we will draft one of those 3. Happy Easter Ira!"
Ira Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 10:41am ET"Cimini wrote that Jimmy Raye was down in Ark. to see McFadden workout. He also met with him. I don't think the Jets have brought in McFadden yet for a visit. They did meet with him at the combine. Still don't think he will get past Al Davis and the Raiders will take him."
Ira Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 10:55am ET"Frank. I agree with you about the Jets trying to get C.Long. But i can't see them taking J. Long if he is there. They've already spent plenty on the o-line. Plus they've already used two 1st rd picks on Brick and Mangold. If Golston and C. Long are taken they will trade down. Frank that wasn't my post above yours but a Very Happy Easter to you and all. GO JETS!!!!"
Drew Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:08pm ET"Alot of action between my boys Frank & Ira..... Listening to Herm gives me a headache but I would ship Coles and Pennington so fast my head would spin. We would need a veteren backup because as much as I Kellen, Tangini would get killed if he got hurt/didnt play well. I would be shocked if either Gholsten or either Long fell to us at this point."
Drew Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:16pm ET"Best case.. Mcfadden gets by Oakland and we are in the hot seat at #6. With all of the FA moves by MrT we have the alot of options here. Even if Ryan falls (which I think he will) because he is not a franchise QB there might be action at #6 to get ahead of the Ravens. This is a good felling to have.. usually we NEED a guy. Now we could go OLB, DE, CB, WR especially if we trade out."
DREWSJETS Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:19pm ET"I would luv to see the JETS get Chad Johnson so we can win a SUPER BOWL this year!!!"
Frank Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:35pm ET"Ira, I beleive Tangini signed Woody because of his flexibility which is something they love. I put Jake third on the list but if he is there at #6 then we have to take him move Woody to RG and put Long at RT. Brandon Moore in my opinion is not good enough but can live with him. We should ask Randy to create a sign up page so we can pick a blog name so there no duplicate names and avoid confusion."
GIOVANNI LEONE Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:41pm ET"HEY RANDY DO YOU THING THE JETS ARE LOOKING AT MCFADDEN,AND MATT RYAN JUST TO TROW OHTERS GMS OF COURS,AND MAYBE THEY WIIL GET DALLAS,OR SOME ONE ELSE TO TRY TO TRADEDOWN AFEW SPOTS AND GET EXTRA PICKS,THAT IS IF GHOLSTON,OR LONG,ARE GONE,WHAT DO YOU THINK."

Thu, March 20, 2008 - 1:14pm ET"i dont understand why the jets fans want LC, he not my favorite player(Kerry Rhode) but hes my favorite charater in the lueage, he dont ask for allot of money, when healthy hes a big star 6 td and 5 games. he a captain, never found mouthing of and of all the guys that get paid big money on this team and not doing anything(byant tomas OLB) THEY WANT TO LOSE LC. anyone else would had sat out this yr"

Alan Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 3:39pm ET"The visiting of Mcfadden is nothing big im sure. Theres more teams that will visit most likely jets are going to get Gholston. And finally someone agrees with me on Desean Jackson, He may not have height (5'11) But he has lots of speed and amazing hands and would be a key slot reciever, If we loose lc and move JC up and we get desean , with Franks and Baker we can have a dominate passing team."
Drew Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 5:41pm ET"I agree totally with Frank ( I think thats 3 in a row) on the blog names. There are too many Drew's that do not make nearly as much sense as I do. LOL...Plus I think I once argued with 2 different Frank's on the same topic......Frank, Brandon Moore is a quality RG. He does have grab a stupid penalty from time to time but he is pretty solid ...but you know how I feel about my boy Jake. "
Frank Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 6:46pm ET"Drew , We need to upgrade our RG the problem I have with Moore is he is too slow and can't pull he is a plodder. That was a major reason why our screens did not work last year because our guard play wasn't there. In the latter rounds we look for a RG. I like Lictensteiger he is nasty and plays with an attitude he reminds me of our former road grader Randy Thomas."
Dublin Jet-Niall Said:
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 8:20pm ET"Drew,Ira-Kudos Gents! You're now so famous you have others impersonating you both! Keep up the good work lads, it makes the off-season go that much quicker. I also find the comment here informative as most other media I have access to is very technical. You guys explain your thoughts which makes it easier for a relative novice like me to get a better understanding of positions/tactics."

Plus any newcomers and healthy Stuckey should improve the group. i like Mangold's way of thinking. Its the only way. No way is Herm taking another QB.GO JETS!!!!"
