File Under: Mike Tannenbaum, Woody Johnson, Dewayne Robertson, Alan Faneca, Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, Damien Woody
03/03 — Before another busy day for the Jets organization reached its conclusion, general manager Mike Tannenbaum threw some love to Woody. The Jets have made a definitive statement since the beginning of the free agency/trading period and the CEO has played a major part.
“It was a great opportunity for the organization. We did a lot of planning with the coaches, the pro and college scouts, and we got tremendous support from Woody,” Mr. T told reporters. “That’s Woody Johnson — not Damien Woody.”
The amiable Jets owner played an important role as the Jets struck first by trade — acquiring big NT Kris Jenkins from the Panthers on Friday — and then in free agency with the additions of LG Alan Faneca, OLB Calvin Pace and OL Damien Woody. Johnson, of course, signs the checks, but he took a prominent hands-on role.
“We’re excited about what we accomplished here. It was a very methodical process and competitive with some of these players,” Tannenbaum said. “We’re really excited to add the four players we did in Kris, Alan, Calvin and Damien. We feel really good where we are relative to playing our cap for the next couple of years.”
This off-season will be remembered as perhaps the most aggressive spring in franchise history. The Green & White, who entered the market comfortably under the cap, targeted their needs and attacked accordingly.
“I think all these guys should contribute here for a number of years and we just felt it was an opportunity,” said the GM. “I think sometimes spending in the NFL can become a little cyclical, and we had the opportunity to try to improve our team and we tried to take advantage of that opportunity.”
As Tannenbaum said, they’ll like the leadership, experience and toughness they’ll receive from this new quartet. But the Jets aren’t dramatically shifting their thinking.
“We want to draft as many of our players and then proactively sign them to extensions like we did with Sione [Pouha],” Tannenbaum said. “That’s still our core philosophy. With these four players in particular, we just felt like there were opportunities to improve us at positions that could be upgraded.”
One player who remains a Jets as of late this evening is DT Dewayne Robertson. Numerous reports suggested a framework had been in place for a D-Rob-to-Cincinnati trade, but that transaction never finalized.
“Right now, Dewayne is a member of the organization. Obviously we were close today, but he is a member of our organization,” Tannenbaum said. “Our off-season program starts on March 17 and unless something changes between now and then, we expect him to be here.”
Can we expect the Jets to be done with free agency?
“As someone suggested to me, I think we bought the suit. Now we just have to go get maybe a couple of neckties,” said the third-year GM. “I hope over the next couple of days there will be a few more things that we’re looking at.”

I think the best scenario would be McFadden is there and either draft him or trade it to the Cowboys for their two first rd picks plus a third rd. "

Kellen Clemens should get the starting nod because he can throw the ball over 10 yards as opposed to Chad. We still need to draft Gholston because Kenyon Coleman is weak at the other DE spot. So give it up, Chad is going to be the starter, just ask all the experts."

Tue, March 4, 2008 - 11:14pm EST"Terrell 1st Suggs plays OLB not DE for the Ravens there D line is NT Ngata 340 lb DE Edwards 315 lb & Gregg 310 lb get my point. Also do not compare Suggs to Gholston they are not even in the same zip code Suggs had like 20 sacks his last year in school he broke NCAA records Gholston does not have the track record that Suggs has I do not even know if Gholston ever had a 10 sack year at Ohio state "
Tom Spicer Said:
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 11:28pm EST"If the Jets draft Long/Gholston they have to play OLB & start over Thomas & have at least 8 sacks. If they get Ellis/Dorsey they have to play DE & start over Coleman & have at least 8 sacks if not you just wasted a top 6 pick. Unless they think 1 of the 2 things I just said will happen than trade the pick to Dallas for there 2 1st round picks but do not take anything less than that "
Tom Spicer Said:
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 11:40pm EST"If we do not want Mcfadden fine hopefully he will get picked before we go but if he is there at 6 & we do not want him trade the pick. Just do not let the Pats get him I am already having nightmares of Brady, Moss & McFadden on the same team. I do not know if that trio can be stopped & I do not want to find out the hard way. I just see this as the next passing up Sapp for Kyle Brady type of deal "

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 3:02am EST"RUN DMC makes NO sense - rbs are a dime a dozen in this league and think of all the guarenteed cash we would need to give him in a monster contract (will cripple us like DRob again). Best case scenario i agree is to trade down. We need a CB and we need a big WR for the red zone to catch CP s floaters. Remember last year inability to score TDs in red zone killed us."
Ray Said:
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 4:01am EST"I don't understand the people who think Henne would be worth a high draft pick! I watched him for four years, and he made the same stupid mistakes as a senior that he made as a frosh. Get off the halucinogens, he's not the next Brady. And yes running backs are a dime a dozen, but franchise running backs are not. Just remember that if he ends up on NE. Twice a year for TEN YEARS."

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 4:26am EST"HELLO!!!! ITS GREAT THAT WE R SPENDING ALL OUR MONEY ON ALL THESE OLD PLAYERS... DONT U THINK? I LIKE THE IDEA OF BEEFING UP THE OFFENSIVE LINE BUT SIGN CALVIN PACE AFTER WE PRACTICALLY GAVE VILMA AWAY... BUT RIDDLE ME THIS WHO IS GOING 2 BE THROWING THE BALL NEXT YEAR? PENNINGTON? CLEMENS? COME ON I AM TIRED OF LOSING.... EVERY YEAR ITS NOTHING BUT STUPIDITY MY THE TEAM I LOVE...."

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 4:58am EST"I just wanna great job to Mr.T, Mr.Woody, & Mangini for stepping it up this yr. and keeping us fans on the edge of our seats! Alot of high hopes for next season all we need is a TE, CB, DE, and a WR. Don't know why so many Jets fans are fixed on McFadden that's too much $$ and he's overrated. I think the Jets should trade that 6th pick and get a later pick in the draft there's plenty of RBs to get"
Charles F Said:
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 6:54am EST"I've been a Jet fan ever since Boomer QB for us a couple of years. This had got to be the first biggest off-season signing that I can remember. Great job to Mr. T and Mangini for being aware of problems on the O and D line and addressing them. This was a tough year for Jet fans but these signings are helping us sleep better at night and looking forward till next year. Keep up the good work Jets 08"
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 10:01am EST"Braeden, How can you say Kellen has no potential he is young? How can you say he is not smart do you know him? These are things I know about Chad he has no upside he can only get worse, he has no arm he throws ducks that almost get Coles killed, he is always hurt he has played 1 full season in his life, we will never win a super bowl with Chad as our QB THAT IS A FACT "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 10:28am EST"Chad alone lost us at least 3 games last year some of the INT'S he had last year he thru right to the defender. Vs Giants to Ross returned 100 yards for a TD turned that game around, vs Bills in Buffalo we are moving about to win he throws it right to the guy, vs Bengals to Joesph returned for a TD lost us the game. HE IS NOT THE FUTURE OF THIS TEAM OVER THE LONG HAUL HE IS NOT THE ANSWER "
mason Said:
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 12:20pm EST"Great job by ,Mr.T and the staff for bring in the proven good players, first of O-LINE big improvment D-LINE same .Draft pass rusher from ohio state or trade with dallas for their 2 first round picks .I don,t think the jets need to go after a RB .This draft is so deep with talented play makers DB from VT FLOWERS fits good with the schem the jets run also TE from notre dame carlson QB flacco "
Jared Said:
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 1:17pm EST"Why r we scared of McFadden falling to the Pats. They already have a good back in Malroney and they dont run the ball. They didnt at all last year. We need to do whats best for us and getting Gholston or trading the pick is the best for us. And take it easy on KC, he got a few starts with a horrible o line, we havent seen his potential. As for Chad, we seen all we need to know."
Charles F Said:
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 3:47pm EST"Here we go again people bashing Chad. Sure Chad wasn't himself this year but it doesn't mean off with his head. With the way are lined looked this past season T. Brady would have looked horrible or any big shot QB. It's funny how you Chad bashers keep talking but the moment Kellen starts playing poor again you will be calling for Chad just like this past season."

Thu, March 6, 2008 - 6:28pm EST"Im reading a lot of comments that suggest Jerry jones is gonna dumb up and take offe r a trade for Mcfadden. I highly doubt this for one theyll have Barber. whos is a beast in himself Jones is an arkansas product so he may be just as inclined to take Felix who shares the last name looks great running and will be cheaper. We should Grab gholston if avail need LB for 34 like flour for a cake."
Xavion Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 6:33pm EST"If someone happens to pull an ace and take Gholston then we shoud draft mcfadden he can definately help out and provide new offensive options. Back to a dallas trade. If Jones feels that he needs to move up in the draft he can simply use on 1st rnd pick with later picks to move up a few slots and take felix and still have another 1st rnder . also remeber that dalls has other needs too."
justin Said:
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 12:05pm EST"see what the jets should do is attack the draft getting a quarter back like hene or the kid from delaware, a tight end like butler out of michigan and the takle jake long out of michigan and a WR like mario manningham =] these are some other spots that should get filled"
