02/21 — The trouble with the NFL Combine workouts and the draft — and no doubt also the reason this is the most wonderful time of the year for many fans — is that one can make a case for any number of players being just the right fit for one's team.
Such is the case with Michigan tackle Jake Long. He'd make a fine Jet — or Dolphin or Raider or Chief or whichever team finally decides to make him its choice at the top of the first round of April's draft.
"What will a team get if it drafts me?" Long said at the podium in the large media room of the Indianapolis Convention Center late this morning. "They'll get a hard-working, passionate player who comes to work and gives 100 percent every day and has a true passion for the game."
Passion's only part of it. Long provides answers to questions that are short and sweet and punctuated with his wry little smile — "little" being a relative term since it's on the face of a body that stands 6'7" and 313 pounds.
Reporters drew him out on two incredible statistics: that over his four seasons at Michigan, the first two at right tackle, the last two on the left side, he had committed only two penalties and given up only two sacks.
"Yeah, they actually got me for one this season, a false start against Northwestern," Long said of his penalties. "The first one was my redshirt freshman year. I had a holding penalty."
And the sacks?
"This year I gave up one, to Vernon Gholston of Ohio State. And I gave up one to Michigan State my redshirt freshman year."
Boy, that first year was a rough one. But since then ...
Long was asked to expand on the sack by Gholston, the Buckeyes OLB who's another player many Jets fans covet.
"Vernon's a great player," he said matter-of-factly, without excuses. "He had a good move on me. I let it up."
As you can see, expansion is also a relative term for the big guy. But sincerity is an absolute. Long has a reverence for the game of football, whether on the college level that he knows or on the pro level that he has yet to experience.
About being named captain of the Wolverines each of the last two years, he said: "To get that twice is the greatest honor I could get at Michigan. I try to live up to it every day. It means I have the responsibility of being a leader on and off the field, of leading by example, being the best player out there, and leading my team to victories."
And he hardly flinched when a Miami reporter asked him how he'd feel if the Dolphins, currently holding the top pick, spent it on him.
"It would be an honor," he said. "I've had some informal meetings with them. It would be a great honor."
Bob Wojnowski had a great line about him in the Detroit News back in November, after Michigan had battled back from its embarrassing 0-2 start to a 7-2 mark:
"Third-and-short usually becomes third-and-Long."
Sounds like a great slogan for the lucky team that grabs him in a little more than two months.
With offensive linemen and tight ends visiting reporters today, Long was the only top-of-the-draft name to pop in. I'll provide profiles of a few of the other top-of-the-draft players as they become available Friday and Saturday.

He made 1 mistake while talking. He should've said 110% instead of 100%. I know i am nit picking but those are the little things you pick up while listening to players."
Randy Lange Said:
"Interesting point, Ira. Perhaps Jake was just being intelligent and factually correct because in reality you can't give any more than 100 percent, even though many of us figuratively like to hear players talk about giving 110, 150, even 1,000 percent."

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 5:09pm EDT"I have been saying this for weeks already we need to draft Jake Long that has to happen. Brick is not the answer move him to guard if they have to or trade him 10 sacks the first year and 15 the second is not progress and a major reason why the offense stunk."
Ira Said:
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 8:09pm EDT"Randy, J.Long seems to be the same size as Joe Thomas from the Browns who was taken with the 3rd pick of last years draft. Is anybody at the combine comparing Long to Thomas?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, Jake in fact paid tribute to Joe Thomas, saying: "He's a great player who represented his school and the Big Ten very well. ... He just showed me and all the other rookies that you can come in and make a huge impact in your first season.""

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 8:21pm EDT"Jake Long can come in and play RT tomorrow for every team in the league. I do not think he will get to #6 but it would be a nice fit anywhere on our line. As some of you guys know I am a big Michigan fan and this guy is the real deal. He was the unquestioned leader on that UM sqaud. Ira you are really reaching with the 110%. This is a Michigan grad ...they do not make math mistakes!!"

Fri, February 22, 2008 - 2:55am EDT"the offensive line is a problem, but you have to realize that the defensive line is that bringing pressure, especially in the 3-4, dorsey or golsten would make sense. also OL is not sexy, especially two in the first round within three years. we need a receiver also because WR MR. Jistin Mc drops too many balls."
Ed Green Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 8:27am EDT"Jake Long appears to be a great selection to our team -- Like Ira said has his number been compared to Joe Thomas? We do need help on the line. I would like to add that we should look in the free agency for a DE - that can make plays. We also need a Big WR -- to make the defensive play a cover 2 with a saftey helping over the top and that will open up the middle / short slant and run game"

Scooter28 Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 1:14pm EDT"If Mcfadden dropped down to 6, we have to take him. He is a playmaker, which we have not had in a long time. We need OL help, DL help and a quarterback too. If we had a chance to get Brohm or Ryan we should do that too. Through free agency we should look to fill the DL and OL and then take a playmaker at 6, either a QB or McFadden. I know we don't need a RB, but you don't pass on McFadden. "

Fri, February 22, 2008 - 4:49pm EDT"Randy, I had mentioned Jake L 2 months ago, in bowl game he anhialated a LB and chased him all the way down field and pinned him. He WONT be there at #6 now so fugettaboutit. I now say /agree with others we have no playmakers on offense, Mcfadden if he is there, Gholston, or trade down. L.C is looking to renegotiate for the 3-4 th time in the last 6 years, no way we pay > than 11m/2 guarantee"
Y.A. Said:
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:12pm EDT"JAKE LONG WOULD LOOK GREAT ON THE JET O-LINE AND BOY WOULD HE FILL A BIG NEED! MANY SEEM TO THINK HE WILL BE GONE BY PICK #6; BUT THE DRAFT CAN BE UNPREDICTABLE. ANYWAY THEY DO IT, THE JETS NEED A RIGHT TACKLE AND A GOOD RUN BLOCKING GUARD BADLY."
tommygunz Said:
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 1:11am EDT"i hear many jet fans talking about garbbinf maccfadden if hes available, yes hes a great back and has some great skills. but at this moment in time i dont think gang green needs a a running back , we have other needs for our team right now first and for most the jets need line-men on both sides of the ball. we need a great runand pass blocking right guard. and some big fast DE. "
chayD Said:
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 9:19pm EDT"With Nick Mangold holding down the midcdle, Brick holding down the left, Jake Long would be the best for the running game. He would also keep Pennington off his back and we all know when he is healthy the Jets are playoff bound. "
Q_C Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 2:49pm EDT"Did someone say we should take Mcfadden? A playmaker? Yeah, he's good; I won't knock him, but stability in the line is more important. If we don't have a flashy running game, that's fine. TJ can move the ball, and quite well. With blocking in place, he'd be a lot more productive. I want effective, not pretty. J. Long can bring more efficiency to the running game, and keep the QB upright. "
