02/21 — A big banner hangs across one of the many second-floor walkways that span the streets of downtown Indianapolis. It contains the slogan "2008 Starts Now" positioned right next to the NFL Scouting Combine logo.
It's true enough as the next draft class of 300-plus college players goes through the annual ritual of being prodded and poked, measured and tested, audiotaped and videotaped under the big white roof of the RCA Dome.
But this growing event — much of it is shown on NFL Network and NFL.com now and by the end of the week a record 500 media credentials will have been issued — isn't just about the college kids. Coaches and GMs take turns at one end of the large room at the convention center to talk with reporters about their veterans as well.
Jets head coach Eric Mangini took the podium at 11:30 this morning to field questions on Chad Pennington, Jonathan Vilma and Laveranues Coles. The coach didn't break any stories as he did last year when he said Pennington was his quarterback heading into training camp. But neither did he give any hint that those big three players were headed anywhere but into the Jets' off-season program, minicamps and training camps in the months ahead.
Here are some of Mangini's remarks from this morning's 15½-minute media session.
On Pennington possibly being traded before the start of the season: "I feel very good about Chad Pennington. There's a lot of things I've talked about over my time with him — his huddle presence, his leadership, things he's been able to do. I like Chad, and one of the things I've always liked about Chad is that he wants to be the starter. That's what you want from any person on this team. I definitely respect that. That's what I like about him so much."
Later on the same subject: "Chad's a member of the New York Jets. That's how we're proceeding. I like the things he brings to the team. That's really how we're operating."
On a QB competition between Pennington and Kellen Clemens: "Kellen had a really good off-season last year. He did some good things with the opportunities he had during the season. He's another guy who's going to work hard this off-season. we'll look at that situation through the course of OTAs, training camp and the preseason games and evaluate them on what gives us the best chance to win."
On Jonathan Vilma's rehab from midseason knee surgery: "Jonathan is one of the hardest-working guys I've come across. He approaches rehab the same way he approaches everything else: full-bore all the time. That's the way he's been progressing this off-season. We monitor it very closely and our doctors and trainers are involved. He's made some good progress."
On Vilma returning to the starting lineup: "It's one of those things where we're going to have to evaluate it as we go. Jon's a good player, a smart player, he's been very productive for us and he's an incredible competitor."
On staying in touch with Laveranues Coles: "Laveranues and I have a very good relationship. I sent him a text the other day. He was shocked that I knew how to send it, I was shocked that it worked. We spent a long time talking. He's one of the most impressive guys I've been around. The captain's role, he's embraced it. What he and I are going to do is sit down and get his feedback on things that we can do better, that I can do better."
On Coles' recent remarks about not being happy with the Jets over his contract situation: "That's the business side of football. It's not something that's different in terms of the Jets versus any other team, and I understand that, I can appreciate that. LC and I have a very good relationship."
I'll be back later this afternoon with a report on Michigan OT Jake Long's impressive media session.

Jets need to find a way to keep Vilma and fit him in to the defense. He's an outstanding talent. Can't let him get away. Same for LC. Hope we can acquire some OL and DL talent through FA. Woody needs to spend the dollars and not be cheap. The time is now. Need a pash rusher!"

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 2:25pm EDT"Wayne, Vilma is an excellent player but the #'s are what they are. Harris made plays that Vilma didn't and they both played with the same D-line in front of them. It doesn't sound like Vilma will be back. If he is back he needs to be tried as an OLB which i felt he should've been this past year. Hobson should've played inside with Vilma outside."
Gavin Harrison Said:
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 2:37pm EDT"I really hope the Jets pay Coles. Also hopefully the Jets keep Vilma. He is a very good linebacker and the Jets should just swith back to a 4-3 so he can perform at a high level. As for Pennington, i think the Jets should trade him and for the draft they should take Vernon Gholston. What do think Randy and great posts, I was wondering do you know of any moves the jets might do in FA. Thanks"

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 2:41pm EDT"We gotta keep Vilma, the JETS can just put him at olb, keep Harris at MLB, but we need an olb like lance briggs. What are you kidding me!? Chad is gonna be our starter next year whether the few CP haters like it or not. Mangini may not have said much, but his comments on Chad are leaning twords him being the starter, Nice post Randy."

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 3:02pm EDT"More Mangini speak. He didn't say anything he hasn't said many times before. Randy, you should be ashamed of yourself, recycling the same old stories as new news. You have a great job. Copy, Paste and re-date. I'm starting to get the feeling this organization is more concerned with making and holding on to the money than on field performance. "

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 3:49pm EDT"vilma is too small to play OLB and if he bulked up another 10-15 pounds to play that position his speed would suffer. i hate to say it because he is a tremendous talent, but he is not a good fit for the 3-4 scheme and neither is briggs. but maybe by putting vilma at OLB with a dominant pass rusher next to him, he'll draw the weaker block assignment and become a pseudo-sack specialist a la LT(NYG)."

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 5:36pm EDT"i dont like the jet GM because he pays more attention to the draft than any other thing when it comes to making the team better. no player is going to just come out the draft and change this team around we need not only the draft but the free agenacy, and trade. unless we make this a 4-3 defense and honestly coach E is going to run himself out of NY/NJ by his pride and faith in that defense 4-3."
Ablity Said:
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 5:46pm EDT"i really do not understand why the jets just dont go back to the 4-3. this defense has not help us at all and it seem that we have a perfict team for that defense it is making the coaches look full of pride and stubborn to not just go back to a defense where d-rob, s-eillis, and jon-V play like pro bowlers in. to me it just doesn't make any sense at all.jon and harris should both be playing always"
Ablity Said:
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 5:53pm EDT"i will never get off this topic vilam went to the pro blow in the 4-3, s-eillis had over ten sack in that defense, we are about to get vernon gloston who do not have the energy to run around all day as a OLB. d-rob is a small but quick DT and was on the all rookie team in the 4-3, when have two great LB in Vilam and harris and a very good one in Barton and a top 10 secondary our team is a 4-3 team"
Gavin Said:
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 10:24pm EDT"I really wish the Jets coaching staff would just listen to us fans. What I wish would happen this offseason. Keep Vilma, sign Coles to an extension, sign Rhodes to an extension. Sign Asante Samuel. Draft Vernon Gholston. A defensive with Ellis, Robertson, Vilma Harris, Gholston, Revis, Samuel, and Rhodes will be downright nasty. IN A 4-3. And I change my mind, keep Chad. What You think Randy."
Emmanuel Zamor Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 2:50am EDT"Manigin needs to realize this is the jets, not the patriots. We are a 4-3 team, why would you throw away the talents of Vilma, ellis, and Robertson. The 4-3 would bring so much pressure, the quarterback wont know what hit him. This would open the door for Rhodes (who could finally go to the probowl), Revis, and miller. also i would suggest moving miller to safety because of his hard hitting. "

Fri, February 22, 2008 - 10:14am EDT"Mr Cryptic does it again. After last season this guy has got to start giving the fans a little more in the way of info. He still has a lot to prove to me personally. Jets fans are some of the most loyal and die hard fans in the NFL and we deserve better. I have been a fan since Joe Willy and will never jump ship, but Isure dont have to open my wallet like I used to. And I wont till I see change."
Brendan Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 12:02pm EDT"I feel like we need to add another dimension to the quarterback competition. Therefore I think the Jets should draft Josh Johnson in the 2nd or 3rd round in my eyes this kid is the next Cunningham. Also the Jets should really go after Asante Samuel the guy is a star and this New York the best city in the world I'm tired of seeing us sit back and do nothing. "
Blatantfoul11 Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 2:28pm EDT" I do believe the Jets are a 4-3 d . The new dimension to the Quarterback would be a Tightend . We need points . I just don't have faith in either Quarterbacks yet - Clemens got a gun , but does he have the brains? Chad has the brains, but he is minus the gun . I sure would have a hard time passing Chris Long up - apples don't fall far from the tree . This is the real Pick Six !!"

Cimini said in todays Daily News that Vilma wasn't sure what the Jets had planned for him for the 08 season. He did say that he should be ready for camp this summer. This will be a very interesting offseason."
