File Under: Eric Mangini, Zach Thomas, Kevin Mawae, Herman Edwards, Jets Dolphins
02/15 — Zach Thomas didn't die, of course. He didn't even retire. But with the release of the venerable middle linebacker by the now Bill Parcells-led Dolphins on Thursday, another chapter in recent Jets history has been completed.
The Green & White have enjoyed playing the Aqua & Coral during Thomas' 12 seasons in the NFL — they've won 12 of the last 16 meetings — but in almost each of those games they had to contend with No. 99, Jason Taylor, applying hellacious pressure on the outside and No. 54, the undersized, big-hearted Texan, inhaling running backs like some industrial-strength vacuum on the inside.
Since 1996, in his 21 games against the Jets, Thomas unofficially has 195 tackles and 22 tackles for loss/no gain. There's no other opponent close in tackles, and the closest in stops at or behind the line is Taylor with 19.
"He doesn't have, quote, all the attributes," said Herm Edwards before his first run-in with Thomas as the Jets' head coach in 2001. "He's not big, he's not the fastest guy or the strongest guy. But what he is is a football player. He can elude some blocks, feel for where the run's going to break. He makes all the tackles, basically."
Five years later, Eric Mangini said this about his first time having to defense the Z-man as an NFL head coach: "With Zach, he's impressive. I really like the way he makes plays sideline to sideline. His instincts, his toughness, his competitiveness — he's got it."
One thing Jets fans will remember about Thomas is his rivalry with center Kevin Mawae, which ended when Mawae was released early in 2006. The two always talked some trash before games — a miked Thomas was even heard beseeching an official before a game to keep his eyes on No. 68 — but respected each other like crazy afterwards.
"I go out and play hard every down," Mawae said before one of those matchups in 2004. "Some people call me dirty, some people call me whatever, but you know what you're going to get when you play against me. The same thing with Zach."
"Kevin will probably put a little stickum on that cast or something so he can get up on me a little quicker and hold like he always does," Thomas said then. "But no, he's the best in the league and I've got respect for him."
Thomas, who will turn 35 on Sept. 1, also was and is a great opponent because of his approach to the game, any game but especially a Jets game. He was asked before that September 2004 meeting about getting an MRI on his shoulder and whether he'd be able to play that Sunday.
"Like I said, it's Jets week," he said. "I'll be fine." And he was — he had 13 tackles that game, his most in the rivalry.
Jets-Dolphins Weeks in 2008 and beyond won't be the same.
Here are the leaders in two defensive categories against the Jets since 1996 (TFLNG–tackles for loss/no gain):
| Tackles | G | TT | TFLNG | G | Total |
| Zach Thomas, MIA | 21 | 195 | Zach Thomas, MIA | 21 | 22.0 |
| Tedy Bruschi, NE | 23 | 154 | Jason Taylor, MIA | 21 | 19.0 |
| Lawyer Milloy, NE-BUF | 19 | 112 | Willie McGinest, NE-CLE | 22 | 16.0 |
| London Fletcher, STL-BUF-WAS | 12 | 104 | Ted Bruschi, NE | 23 | 12.0 |

Fri, February 15, 2008 - 3:47pm EST"Braeden, if McFadden were to drop to the JETS at # 6, I would offer our # 6 pick to Dallas for their # 22 and # 28 plus inside linebacker Bobby Carpenter. As to Zach Thomas, sorry to see him get cut, but I hope those concussions he suffered don't affect his everyday quality of life."

Fri, February 15, 2008 - 3:50pm EST"I'd definitly want Chris Long or Vernon Gholston Over MaFadden. Hey Randy do you have any information on who the Jets may try to sign in this up coming free agent signing period. Or any info on who they may draft."
Randy Lange Said:
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 3:54pm EST"Justin, thanks for asking. Unfortunately, those are things I couldn't comment on even if I did know, which I don't. But we'll continue to do stories on free agency and the draft, Real Football Services will be back again with independent info and mock drafts, and as always we welcome your thoughts and opinions."

Fri, February 15, 2008 - 8:07pm EST"That would be a nice move, Russell, but i think the cowboys would be too ify whether or not the raiders or falcons would get Mcfadden. I think the Jets should just stick with the #6 pick, its a pretty good spot to be in at this point."

I don't think mcfadden can do what A. peterson did. i say Jake long and put him at LT and move D. Brick to RT and fenca at RG And we have a O line."

Sat, February 16, 2008 - 9:58am EST"I just read an article where WR Coles wants more money and to redo his contract. Three words for him, "HONOR THIS CONTRACT". The JETS went 4-12 last season, so no one shoud be saying anything about any money. Besides, Coles is 30 yrs old and is scheduled to make $ 11 million over the next two years. Braeden, at # 6, I like DE/OLB Gholston of Ohio State or CB Jenkins of South Florida. "
Frank Said:
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 10:07am EST"Well Well look who is shooting his mouth off and threatening not to come to camp because quote "He was promised to be taken care of" gee does that sound familiar? I can't wait to see how Tangini handles this one. Maybe they will wait until August 31 and get good value for him. Coles and Cotchery are the same receiver trade Coles now while you can get something for him. Coles & Vilma for C. Johnson"
mike grimes Said:
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 10:26am EST"Beating up the on the fish just won't be the same w/o Thomas, and especially if Taylor leaves. I liked kicking the Dolphins butts with them in the lineup."

Sat, February 16, 2008 - 11:06am EST"Zachs a quality player & quality guy but the Jets don't need him. 2 old, 2 much money & 2 many concussions. Save our money for FA & the draft. Need to go big on the O & D lines & you'll see different team next year. Don't need McFadden. We have TJ and Leon. Keep Penn if he'll take a paycut. Hope Kellen steps up. Need a huge draft to gain on Pats. Phins will only get better with Parcells at helm."
Drew Said:
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 11:40am EST"Zach Thomas???He is an aging LB with major medical problems. Let him go to a veteran team and spend most of his time on the injury list there. Plus I would take Barton over Zach anyway. Barton suits up and plays with a mean streak that Zach hasnt done with in 2 years! I hope the gameplan is to get Samuel and a RT/LG in FA then go LB/DE and WR in the draft. A few correct moves and we change things"
Drew Said:
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 11:45am EST"By the way all of the Mcfadden fans.......Felix Jones "his back" will be just as good of a player as Mcfadden will be. Watch the games. We have TJ and LW to run the ball. We address the OL and these guys will make plays. Look around the league you do not need a top 5 RB to win....Kudos to Russell, I could not have posted better than that. If Mcfadden drops the Jets will fleece Dallas for picks"
Ira Said:
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 3:19pm EST"At the end of the season i felt there was a 50/50 chance of LC coming back. After reading Hutchinson's article today it sure sounds like he will be on another team. Can't blame the Jets for not wanting to commit to more than 2 years. They are being fair enough to guarantee 11 million over 2 years for a 30 yr old WR. Hate to lose him but it sure looks that way. Who will replace him?"
scjoe Said:
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 4:16pm EST"Glad to see Zach go, hope he don't end up in NE. I don't know quite how he did it all those years, not great size, great speed, great strength, but somehow ALWAYS around the ball and made the tackle. I saw way to much of him over the years, so, GOODBYE ZACH! Go over to the NFC"

Jack Said:
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 7:28pm EST"The Jets should really commit to getting bigger on both sides of the line, for the past 3 or so years they have been pushed around like rag dolls, forget Mcfadden, I can recall 3 years ago Reggie Bush was THE man, he hasnt really made that much of an impact. J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets!"
Drew Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 12:09am EST"I really like Coles...have since we drafted him but enough with this guys act. He has 2 years remaining at a big salary. Lets call it as we see it...he is not an elite WR. He is a really good tough player but come on......Coles is trying to cash in because he knows his years are coming to an end. He pulls this stunt every couple of years. Trade him!!!!!"
Ira Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 7:29am EST"Frank no way are LC and JC the same types of players. LC is the toughest WR in the league but he showed signs of starting to break down last year. The Jets need a big tall, fast WR to line up opposite JC. Hate to say this but the right move would be to trade Coles if he doesn't want to play under the offfer the Jets have given him which is very fair. GO JETS!"
Jack Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 10:30am EST"I think the Jets should take Mcfadden if he still there and build the offensive line from F/A. My top draft players if any there went Jets pick Jake Long, Chris Long or Darren McFadden. They could be all gone before the Jets pick. others Ryan Clady, Sedrick Ellis. And trade Coles for picks or a player just get rud of him. "
Braeden Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 2:42pm EST"I have no idea why people want to just hand over McFadden to the cheaters in New England. There is a reason McFadden is the best player in the draft. Hes the New Adrian Peterson, and he can help the poor offense of the Jets and CP, not Clemens. McFadden can rush for 1000 yards in the nfl easily. As for LC, give him a year or two , hes still good and hes Chads favorite target. Give him a chance! "
Michael Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 5:09pm EST"hey Jets fan,Zach thomas is going to the new york jets for a visit."

Randy Lange Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 7:14pm EST"Xavion, the next Radar entries will likely be on the Combine workouts this week, which are needless to say draft-related. But feel free to put up a preliminary draft observation here if you'd like."
Xavion Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 5:22pm EST"With that said I Think Mcfadden can be another AP if he builds his lower body to marion barber levels. But I would Love to see the Jets Draft Vernon Gholston I think He would make an excellent addition to the team and fit in perfectly plus the jets seem to be fond of The Ohio State. Also I could care less about Zach Thomas. He could retire for all I care hes the one that took Martin's Knee out."
Frank Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 5:28pm EST"After thinking about this I think Coles is pulling a page out of the Kendall handbook. He has complained bitterly about Mangini's camp the last 2 years he said he felt he would lose some playing years because camp is so brutal. Now that Chad is done and is the reason he came back to the Jets. I really beleive he is talking his way off the team. Trade him now before it gets ugly and he loses value."
Ira Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 8:06pm EST"Randy, Glad you mentioned that the Combine is coming up. Yes i understand its necessary but way too much is made of it. Scouts have enough game tape and scouted players live to tell wHether or not they can play. All this 40 time, bench presses and jumping is all nonsense. Just look at the game tapes and see if a player is a player or not. For every 1 player there are 10 Mike Mamula's."
Drew Said:
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 9:43pm EST"If all of you Mcfadden fans want the scoop on him read or listen to Mike Mayock and or Pat Kirwin. They do not love this guy. Neither have him in their top 10 prospects. The kid from Illinois is the best back in the draft. He is the next AP. Plus we do not need another RB. Trust TJ and Leon. We have to build the OL and DL/LB amd get a dynamic WR"

Sun, February 17, 2008 - 10:41pm EST"Hey Woody, how about you show your most important fans - the season ticket holders - that you care about them by stating that you will not require PSL's in the new stadium. I know at least 50 other season ticket holders who will not renew if you do and you'll lose me as a fan forever!!!! Do the right thing by the fans who spend their well earned money to support your team week in and week out."

Mon, February 18, 2008 - 6:46am EST"I agree with Frank that Coles is long in the tooth and needs to move on, but he will be a Jet this year and for some time. Trade down in the draft, or get Jake Long. We have everything else we need an offesive line to keep the D off the field. Start from the middle out. Chad has the heart of a Spartan warrior, he can win and will. "
Damone Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 11:35am EST"If you guys thought our offense was bad last year.If we get rid of Coles, you're really gonna hate it.....unless we get a really good WR in his place....and not just somebody average."
Row Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 12:23pm EST"Does anyone remember Coles getting slaughtered when Chad threw him that 5 yard lob? I would have played like a receiver on a mission after they put in Clemens. At least he had time to make moves on corners after the catch. He QUIT ON THE TEAM. That is the CHARACTER on the team I don't want. RELEASE COLES! Desean Jackson is the next Steve Smith, and DJ is 6 foot tall and faster! "
DAMONE Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 1:36pm EST"desean jackson is 170 pounds!!!"
Ira Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 2:20pm EST"LC never has quit and never will for any team. The guy is all heart but the Jets gave him a fair offer. If he can do better then good for him. Trade him and get the pick. "
Frank Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 2:37pm EST"Hey Guys it starts and ends with the O-Line. I don't care who is QB, RB or WR because if we don't significantly improve the line it won't matter. We need to find a way to get Jake Long and move Brick. Second we need to sign a LG other than Faneca who we will not get I don't know who else will be available that is why I was so upset about Wahle. No one else agrees with me but move Brick to RT."
Drew Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 2:40pm EST"I have yet to understand Row's love affair with D Jackson. He is a talented player but he is more like 5'10 and is way to light to play WR every down. He is a dynamic special teams guy (we have Leon and Justin for that role already) He should be a 2nd rounder but he will run a crazy 40 at the combine and get drafted mid 1st. He quit on his team this year. Big underacheiver!!!"
Frank Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 2:45pm EST"Sorry guys but D. Jackson and McFadden are not the best of their class. McFadden came up small in his bowl game and Jackson is good but doesn't have the size. My pick for best RB is Mendenhall from Illinois he is built more for the pro game and will be a great back. At WR I would love for the Jets to try and grab Malcolm Kelly from Oklahoma he is big at 6'4" fast and knows how to create seperation"
zartan Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 5:46pm EST"WOW DREW. I dont hear much logic from ppl on this blog but you seem 2 know your stuff. agree 100% with everything you say. i think you Mcfadden fans are young guys that havnt seen 2many guys enter the draft. this guy is average at best. im sure you know what a fad is. i myself like DE Long but do we take him when we need LBs. if Coles doesnt shut up N play, its time 2 go. take a look at Chad Henne"
George Wants To Be Wesley Walker Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 7:38pm EST"Coles is a warrior. Give the QB and the WRs more than 1.3 seconds and their long game will reappear (at about 4 seconds). NYJ has an OL problem: They can't pass block and they can't run block. Til they do, you can't blame it on the skill players. TJ did 1100 yards behind THAT line? Give'm a Purple Heart!!!"
Frank Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 10:16pm EST"Drew, see this is what I love about Tuna he is a realist. He comes in and cleans house. Tangini needs to do the same they drafted and played Clemens they need to trade Pennington, Coles, D-Rob, Vilma and Ellis all players they should get draft picks. Stockpile the picks so we can make the trades to go after some of the players in the draft we are talking about. We won't miss any of these players."
Frank Said:
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 10:24pm EST"Ira, calm down. LCand JC play a similar game both are around the same size and both are physical receivers. My point is forget the past...going forward I want JC not LC on my team because they are going in opposite directions career wise. Over the next 4 years JC will be much more productive than LC. Secondly we need a big receiver so who has got to go? Coles and get the draft pick."

Mcfadden stayed healthy & played great in the SEC which is the best in NCAA football. I am not saying the Jets should draft him they need more help in other places but this kid is the real deal & I would not be mad at all if the Jets got him."
Braeden Said:
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 10:57am EST"jeez why does everyone wanna blame everything on CP? It was past the trade deadline and we needed someone to blame, he went 13/20 in the gae against the bills and they benched him. Then Clemens came in and threw 2 ints in 2:30. Why does everyone wanna trade the good players like chad, drob ellis, vilma. If the Jets trade them, theyll be the 2007 dolphins. "
Steve Said:
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 11:13am EST"McFadden is overrated!!!! just listen to the experts. The Jets problem is offensive line - moving Brick to RT makes no sense because hes making progress at LT and hes pretty solid but since he was drafted No. 4 hes getting critics. The Jets NEED to sign Faneca hes a freakin Pro Bowler and Brick played better with a veteran next to him. PASS RUSH=TURNOVERS - Jets should use No. 6 to get a pass rush"
Tom Spicer Said:
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 11:26am EST"Draft order - 1 Dolphins- Glenn Dorsey (Parcells loves to draft defense) 2 Rams- Jake Long (need O line help) 3 Falcons- McFadden (new face of francise) 4 Oakland- Chris Long (father was a raider) 5 Chiefs- Vernon Gholston 6 Jets- Sedrick Ellis. We can not assume that QB'S will go top 5 if they do great than we will do better but always look at it as worse case this is what will happen."
Steve Said:
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 12:27pm EST"Randy do you agree signing Faneca would be the right move? And also the Jets rush defense hasnt been good since switching to a 3-4. I think its because the jets dont have a 6'6 350 NT. D-rob is great but what about getting a big guy like shaun rogers(wants to be traded) or haynesworth(if not franchised) and maybe moving D-rob to DE. Randy what are your thoughts on the Jets at NT? "
Randy Lange Said:
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 12:33pm EST"Sorry, Steve, I can't comment on personnel matters. But you all can feel free to offer your opinions on guard, nose or any other position on the Jets that interests you."
Cloes complains way too much Said:
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 2:13pm EST"Coles is a great WR, but has a RE-ACCURING INJURE. And Coles is 30 years old. The JETS offered Coles a FAIR 2 year contract. The JETS would be stupid to offer COLES more than 2 years. I like COLES, but he complains WAY too much."
Ira Said:
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 3:24pm EST" The Jets should pursue Justin Gage. He is a big, tall WR that they haven't had since Keyshawn left. He would be perfect to lineup across from Cotchery if Coles were to be traded."
Russell Said:
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 11:20pm EST"As to the WR position, trade Coles for a draft pick, sign WR B.Johnson from Arizona then draft a WR like Sweed from Texas. By the way, did anyone notice that McFadden fumbled quite a bit in college football. And we need to upgrade our ILB on defense. I like Butler from Nevada, Lansanah from Connecticut and my sleeper selection is ILB Magro from West Virginia."
Drew Said:
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 5:30pm EST"Thanks Zartan....I would love to grab Henne in the 3rd or so. I do think his stock will go up after the combine though. He has a big arm and was a big leader for the Wolverins. That will come out in the interviews. Thanks again"

Wed, February 20, 2008 - 8:20pm EST"Ira, I totally agree about Justin Gage. I watched him play in college and he was underrated with the Bears. I would be very excited with Gage! "
Joe Akey Said:
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 10:16pm EST"Chad Pennington is and should be our quarterback. Every quarterback has a bad season. Tom Brady after he won his first Super Bowl. Big Ben after his first. We have talent at most positions and he is our best shot to win. Clemens is not the answer. Give him another chance. Too many fans are too fickle. I am excited for next season but Chad is the best way to go. "

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 12:58pm EST"Can someone please tell me why the Jet's never go after play makers in free agency? Instead we go for practice squad guys or people who have been on IR! All I want next season is no Chad and a WR thats is over 6'1 and and can stretch the field. Let's get Chad Johnson remember what it was like with Keyshawn! A deep threat is a necessity!!!"
Joey G Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 9:28am EST"With all this praise of Zach Thomas going around and the possibility of him signing with the Pats why don't the Jets Brass make an attempt to get him in our stable. We certainly could use a player of his character an leadrshiplet alone talent. Wake up Mangini and stop letting all the good players sign up with your old Boss."
